Browsing through the DVD shelves at your favorite retailer, one thing that will quickly jump out at you, are the horrendous DVD covers that studios use. Shoddy Photoshop, silly art, odd angles, it’s terrifying to our eyes. And no matter how good or bad the film is, we do judge “the book by its cover.” A good DVD cover can sell a few more units, no matter if we’ve heard of the film or not.

Attack of the Horrible DVD Covers! will be a monthly article focusing on the month’s releases that feature some truly bad art. To kick start the article off, we look back at the last few months of releases and scream!

The Stepfather cover art is one of the worse this year. Bland, bad lighting, really bad Photoshop work on the family, makes this an eye sore.

Look at the angle the family is positioned compared to the Stepfather. Anyone who has ever taking an art class, knows more about composition than this artist did. It sells the actors, that’s it. Ugly, no? The solution you ask? Why didn’t they just used the awesome one-sheet? It’s effectively chilling, tells all you need to know about the film in a simple manner.

What on Earth is this Collateral Blu-ray cover?

Some bad lighting and silly cutouts on the main actors, makes this great Michael Mann film appear to be a direct-to-DVD flick. Now, the original poster art is very simple, featuring a sitting Tom Cruise with a gun, yet it’s mysterious and gave the audience a glimpse of the bad guy not usually associated with roles Cruise plays. It would’ve worked better.

Up in the Air?

While at first glance, Up in the Air‘s cover isn’t bad. It’s plain and features the two leads involved in what looks like a pleasant conversation. Let’s say you didn’t know the film’s plot. Would this work? Does Clooney push Blu-ray units just as a name? Again, the one-sheet is far more effective.

We will be back next month, for the ugly June cover art, so keep it here at Killer Film.

Attention Photoshop Artists: If one of our readers is awesome enough to make a cover art that’s better than something the studio used, send it as a JPEG file in an email to donny@killerfilm.com and we will highlight it in the next article of Attack of the Horrible DVD Covers! This could possibly win you some free swag like stickers or DVDs from us, and maybe, just maybe, one awesome cover could get you the coveted Fan of the Month honor!

Carolyn Briggs and Tim Metcalfe are collaborating on the script based off the memoirs This Dark World written by Briggs. Here’s the story synopsis below from Amazon (via The Playlist).:

Carolyn Briggs grew up with modest means in the Iowa heartland. Pregnant at seventeen, married a few months later, by the age of eighteen she found herself living in a trailer with no plans beyond having more babies-until she found Jesus. It began innocently enough-a few minutes lingering on the televangelist stations, a cursory look at the Bible-and soon she had wholly given herself over to a radical, apocalyptic New Testament church. Her daily life was permeated with a sense of the divine-she spent hours a day in prayer and Bible study, wore modest clothing, even braced herself for the Rapture every time she heard trumpet music over the supermarket loudspeaker. It was only when her marriage began to unravel that Carolyn dared to question the religious dogma she had embraced for all of her adult life to date.

Principal photography is expected to start in Upstate New York this June with a 2011 release date. Farmiga is in the middle of acting for the production of Duncan Jones’ Source Code, expected to come out in theaters in 2011.

Sheldon Turner, best known for his script work for the Oscar nominated feature Up in the Air, is making his directorial debut with By Virtue Fall. The story, written by Turner, revolves around a man who is framed by his mentor and winds up in prison. Once released, he’s fixated on getting revenge on his former partner, who has flourished in his new life and tried to cleanse himself of the past.

The picture is being produced by Turner and Jennifer Klein with Nicholas Chartier under Voltage Pictures. Turner spills a bit more to Variety on the debut.:

Turner told Daily Variety that directing “is something that I’ve long held in high regard. I approach it cautiously and reverently. This script was the first I’ve written that made me feel like I had no choice but to embark on my directing career.”

Turner had considered helming his own project for some time, but found it difficult to decide which pic to choose as his first directorial bow. In the end, he said he chose “By Virtue Fall” because “I cannot imagine anyone else directing this script.”

He also wanted his directorial debut “to stand on the strength of the characters and the power of the performances. This is a film that’s designed to showcase and challenge two great actors.”

If Thank You for Smoking was Jason Reitman’s hello to us, then Juno was his hello to Hollywood. He mixes humor and drama, with a great ear for music, crafting some really good films. Intelligence and hilarity are benchmark for what now is the definition of a Jason Reitman film, yet the Juno backlash seemed to rope him in unjustly. Up in the Air should squash all of those unruly Diablo Cody haters for good, as many viewed her script as some sort of template that made everyone better because of it. Let’s get this straight: Juno is a fine film, with a sense of honesty that came from Jason Reitman, and Up in the Air proves this due to the maturity he has now gained as a director. His voice is clear here; there’s a sense of relevance in the film, timeliness, and earnestness in the comedy, as well as the drama.

Up in the Air tackles our tanking economy head-on, yet there’s a series of interesting subtleties that aid into making this film so good. Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) flies out to various companies in different cities to fire people, because the companies themselves cannot find the gal to do so. Knowing our country’s dilemma is key to understanding the film’s message, yet it’s also interesting to note on how the film is just as much as a story of a man and his attempt at redemption, as it is of the Midwest with it’s economic climate and values. Clooney’s character is from Omaha, NE one of the few cities not to be rocked with historic layoffs. Omaha has had its share of closings and layoffs, but it is also a city that has blocked much of America’s woes, with being on the edge of the changing economy. His job is very much modern, especially when Natalie (Anna Kendrick, Elsewhere) comes into the film, a symbol of a new, blossoming career, as the ones in Detroit, Wichita, or Cleveland are dying out. Omaha is one city in America that is growing steadily with the changes in America, and all for the positive.

Mixing that with comments on a changing dating scene, makes for an interesting peak at the dawning of a new decade in America, one that is being met head-on with failures and uncertainty. But don’t mistake Up in the Air for some deep document, as Reitman is having even more fun with the comedy he is finding in situations based on Clooney’s character’s own vapidness. He looks down right alien when he comes to Wisconsin for his sister’s wedding, let alone a man that is finding love in suspicious Alex (Vera Farmiga, Orphan). While layoffs and the acceptance of being incomplete can be dour stuff, one must not forget where Reitman gets his funny bone from, because Up in the Air is still a funny film. But it is this dour stuff; this look at our sinking economy, the nature of who one is with or without their job, these types of subtle looks aid a ballsy final act, making Up in the Air a great film.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Paramount delivers a superb looking transfer. Rich, textural, and nearly three-dimensional, for a drama/comedy with a muted color palette, this is excellent. The DTS track is good, but it’s a dialogue driven film. Expect it to be front heavy, but warm and ambient.

Commentary: Reitman is here with his first unit director and cinematographer. They all offer up some neat info, for a laid back track on the filming. Pretty technical, yet informative.

Shadowplay: Before the Story: This is a look at the company Reitman uses for his film’s title sequences. Short and sweet, but nothing to riveting.

American Airlines Prank: Used to get the bigwigs all up-in-arms on how the airline is portrayed in the film, as it runs about 40 seconds.

13 Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary, Trailers, and a Music Video finish out the slim helping of extras.

Conclusion: A superb film, worthy of the praise and award nominations. A must own. Blu-ray is great, but the extras could have had more meat to them.

The Film: Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

That’s just the case as he gets to produce the upcoming feature called Kiss and Tell. The story is based on a pitch by Dax Shelby and Robert Stevens, about a woman (Isla Fischer) who discovers she has the power to see exactly how a long-term relationship will unfold with a man after kissing him (Variety). Also producing the script with Turner will be Jennifer Klein for the feature from Universal Pictures.

Turner helped write the remake of The Longest Yard as well as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. It’s a world of difference comparing and contrasting those two scripts to the Academy Award nominated script for Up in the Air. Turner’s attached to several other projects which include Infamous and Paths of Glory.

Directing the picture will be Jody Hill, producer and writer of the HBO series Eastbound & Down. The story is based off of a pitch by Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan, story details are being kept under wraps apart from McBride taking on the role of a beaten-down, hardboiled P.I. (Variety).

Not only is it the main filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but it’s also the location for the upcoming Alexander Payne feature called The Descendants. The film stars George Clooney as a “besieged and wryly introspective attorney” who “wrestles with the decision of whether to keep his swath of valuable inherited land or sell it to a real estate developer.” But more important is Matt’s (Clooney) wife, who is in an irreversible coma, and the fact that Matt has just discovered that she was having an affair with real-estate broker Brian, which leads “him to travel with his two daughters—precocious 10-year-old Scottie and fresh from rehab 17-year-old Alex—from Oahu to Kauai to confront Brian (/Film).

George Clooney can still be seen in the recently released Jason Reitman film Up in the Air and just wrapped up production for the Anton Corbijn directed feature The American. Payne is also attached to produce and direct the upcoming novel adaptation of Fork in the Road.

People still apparently want more and more with Avatar already on it’s fourth week and still in the top slot with $48.5 Million for the weekend. With the film already ranked in at number 7 of the top domestic grosses of all time and number 2 on the top grosses worldwide, there’s no stopping this sucker.

Then we’ll tip-toe over to the newly released films, the first of them being the post-apocalyptic vampire tale Daybreakers which made $15 Million. That’s pretty good for the Ethan Hawke and Williem DaFoe starring feature with a $20 Million dollar budget. There is also the Amy Adams and Matthew Goode co-starring chick flick Leap Year managed to make decent bank with a round up of $9.1 Million domestically. If you want to go into how the other films are ranking in comparison to their budget a lot of them are doing pretty great, some like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Jason Reitman’s buzz-worthy feature Up in the Air a couple of many that are booming during this winter season. Here’s the rest of the box office intake below from Box Office Mojo.:

Weekend Box Office (January 8-10)

Avatar ($48.5 M)

Sherlock Holmes ($16.6 M)

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel ($16.3 M)

Daybreakers ($15 M)

Up in the Air ($7.1 M)

The Princess and the Frog ($4.7 M)

Invictus ($1.7 M)

It’s time to go mid month with this January with some more eagerly anticipated features such as The Book of Eli and The Spy Next Door with a New York and Los Angeles limited release of The Last Station.
