Are there Asteroids in Roland Emmerich’s future?

Yes, Hollywood has apparently become tired of adapting console games to feature films, and is looking towards arcade games. We’ve already heard that a few are in the works (here), and it looks as though Atari’s Asteroids is the next to get a film. The studio won a bidding war to adapt the game recently, and it looks as though they already have a director in mind. Vulture is hearing that Roland Emmerich has been offered to direct a feature film on the arcade game by Universal.

Yeah, Michael Bay already did a film about asteroids threatening the Earth (Armeggedon), but this film would be taking a step further by having the Earth already destroyed. The film’s plot follow “the remnants of human civilization are now living on far-flung colonies within an asteroid belt alongside aliens. The survivors were led to believe that this alien civilization was benevolent, rescuing them from doom, but ultimately discover that the aliens have engineered Earth’s destruction, and soon will do the same for the rest of humankind”.

Firestarter preparing for remake-ville

Apparently Universal are looking to remake Firestarter, the original 1984 film starred Drew Barrymore and George C. Scott. Universal have teamed with Dino DeLaurentiis Co. on the project, they also were responsible for the original. They have Mark L. Smith (Vacancy) on board to write the new script, which will be loosely based on Stephen King’s original story.

Martha De Laurentiis said: “We see this as a unique, character-driven thriller with a supernatural edge, based on a timeless concept and enhanced by recent visual effects advances.”

Debbie Liebling with Universal also commented: “Firestarter has a great mythology and with Martha and Lorenzo’s vision we believe the franchise can be extended in a new and exciting direction.”

The remake was something that Dino himself was working on before his passing earlier this year. The company also have remakes for Barbarella and Maximum Overdrive in the works along with a MacGyver reboot.

Original film synopsis: A couple who participated in a potent medical experiment gain telekinetic ability and then have a child who is pyrokinetic.

Daniel Craig Gets Thrilling Dream House

Terror-inducing Daniel Craig, most notable for his recent reprisal of James Bond, is set to be the subject of a haunting in Universal’s upcoming psychological thriller, Dream House. The movie has Craig as a publishing executive who moves from the Big Apple to a small New England town. The family’s new home turns out to be a splatterhouse, who’s grisly murders have left the house vexed.

The film is set to be directed by Jim Sheridan, who’s current exploits are Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman, and Black Mass, a terribly vague film, both due this year. Next year he’s set to finish Emerald City, focusing on the Irish Mob in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City.

Writer David Loucka is also on the case, who’s only real milestone is Eddie, the Whoopi Goldberg movie.

Aside from the writer, the decent director and the phenomenal Daniel Craig more than compensate. The choice of a psychological thriller for Craig can’t possibly go wrong, can it?

Arcade Classic Asteroids Getting Silver Screen Adaptation

That’s right folks. The game where a triangle shoots rocks into smaller rocks until they disappear is getting the film treatment. Universal won the rights to develop the movie after winning a bidding war for them. The scribe behind the adaptation is new Matt Lopez, while being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. He also produced Transformers.

Really? A bidding war for Asteroids the movie? What’s next? Tetris? Or an adaptation of the classic game E.T. for the Atari 2600 would be along the same caliber. As long as we’re at it, why not an adaptation of The Floor is Lava since we’re pulling from childhood games.

‘Bride of Frankenstein’ Floats Closer to Life

In an effort to remake every classic movie in their catalog, it appears Universal has chosen writer-director Neil Burger and Dirk Wittenborn to do the honors. Hopefully Burger and Wittenborn decide to pay homage to the classic’s Elsa Lanchester when bringing the Bride back to the silver screen. Earlier attempts of the remake had been set in New York, but with the duo being fairly new to Hollywood, this remake could make or break them.

Spielberg, Smith Remake Oldboy

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith along with DreamWorks are in talks with Universal to remake Chan Wook-park’s Oldboy . The original about “a man who gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.” has been on the remake radar for quite a while.

I have no doubt that Spielberg can rock the hell out of a movie, but does this killer flick really need a remake? Talk about it in our comments section.
