We heard not long ago that Pixar wasn’t planning on continuing the Toy Story franchise (here) other than the animated short that played in front of Cars 2.

However, Tom Hanks spoke with Magic 105.4 (via Digital Spy) that a fourth film maybe in development. “I think they are trying to do another one. The spirit afoot is to make a fourth,” he said.

Of course, Hanks does mention that he only thinks another film is in development, and even he’s waiting to see what Pixar wants to do. “Whatever is going on at Pixar headquarters is a mystery to me. I’ll wait until they blow white smoke out of the chimney or whatever it is that says there’s another Toy Story coming down the pipe,” he said. A sequel would seem like a big possibility given the film’s $1 billion dollar success, but does a fourth film need to be made? Many have agreed that Toy Story 3 concluded the series perfectly, and that a sequel would maybe taint that ending. However, money talks in Hollywood, and Pixar knows people will watch another film if it happens.

Here’s a delightful little animated film.

I looked and looked for the DreamWorks or Pixar logo on the film, but nope, someone else is actually making and can make just as good animated films as those two powerhouse studios, and the real winners are us, the audience. Despicable Me aims for the funny bone and hits it nearly every time, thanks to a clever script that has a few jokes that could be viewed as being a tad mean-spirited, but hey, what’s not to like about an animated film that jabs at orphans, bad parenting, and poop? Don’t fret, it’s all very safe, so your kids won’t be tainted, as I’m sure they’ll love the Minions so much, that Universal granted us with some short films for the Gru-ray disc.

For all of the jokes, the poop humor, and the Minion antics, Despicable Me actually has an emotional chord within all of the eye-popping 3D. It might be minor, and not as profound as we’ve seen from DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragonand Pixar’s Toy Story 3. The film has a somewhat original idea of two super villains battling it out for top villainy and a bank loan for future villainy. Gru (Steve Carell) thinks by adopting three orphaned little girls, that he could use them to trick Vector (a somewhat wasted Jason Segel) and get his shrink ray. All goes according to Gru’s devilish plan, until he develops his father’s connection to the three girls.

Despicable Me is quite enjoyable from start to finish. The emotional third act doesn’t hit a home run, but it’s a solid double with runners in scoring position, but still, it’s the clever visual jokes, the Minions, and safely inappropriate humor that makes the film a hoot. Oh, and the funky Mission: Impossible score from Hans Zimmer and Pharrell from N.E.R.D. adds a considerable amount of charm to film. It’s a welcomed breezy time, possibly a nice diversion from the more emotional animated films as of late. In fact, it nicely reminds us of a bygone time when Road Runner would violently out wit Wiley E. Coyote. Like I said, Despicable Me is a charmer, and it doesn’t mind being a little devious to do so.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Universal’s HD transfer is better here than in 2D cinemas. It’s eye-catching with the eye-popping colors and fine clarity, like any animated film should be on Blu-ray. I don’t want to bore you with adjectives on the great looking transfer, so just enjoy: it’s what HD animated films are made for. Note: There’s also a 3D Blu-ray version that is on a different set, so it won’t be reviewed here.

The DTS track is equally as great. Loud, powerful, room-rattling, yet it never drowns out the babble between the Minions or any other dialogue. Hope you all have a above average home theater system.

All extras are in HD.

Commentary: Director’s Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin talk about the production of the film and the development of the script, and at times, get interrupted by the lovable Minions. Maybe it’s too much, since only adults listen to these, but hey, it’s cute and clever, even if it’s over-done.

Gru Control: This is an all-Minion picture-and-picture track and it features them goofing off during the movie, with some interviews. It’s neat for the kids and is possibly only aimed at them.

Mini-Movies: Here’s three short films, featuring mostly the Minions (yet again), and they’re all pretty good. Home Makeover has the three little girls trying to prep the house for a visit from the Orphanage to make sure Gru is still keeping the house safe. Orientation Day has a couple of new Minions learning the rules of the job, but it’s Banana, that is truly funny and great. Fans should enjoy all three, though.

Most of the featurettes are kind of EPK, but give a good little bit of info on the making of the film. The Voices of Despicable Me has interviews with the voice cast; The World of Despicable Me covers the creation fo the houses, labs, and other places; Despicable Beats has an interview with N.E.R.D.’s Pharrell on his score and songs for the film; and A Global Effort covers the international production teams that help make the film. Simple and quick.

These extras are just for fun: Miss Hattie’s Top Secret Cookie Recipes offer up some recipes for the fans that are cooks; some interactive games in Super Silly Fun Land and Gru’s Rocket Builder, which are your typical remote control based games; and Trailers and BD-Live functions round out the extras.

A second disc that hosts the DVD version of the film and the Digital Copy.

Conclusion: Funny, enjoyable, even with some subtle mean bits of humor (that I enjoyed) on a stellar Blu-ray disc.

The Film: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

We all know that Pixar enjoys attaching shorts to their films, and we’ll soon be getting one for Toy Story. Disney animator, Floyd Norman, posted details on that short on Twitter. “Ken and Barbie want to go to Hawaii. I don’t know what it’s gonna be attached to. Fun stuff, however” he said.

While Norman isn’t sure what film it will be attached to, director Lee Unkrich confirmed on Twitter the short will play in front of Cars 2 next summer. Of course, many were probably hoping for more of Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen), and there new owner Daisy, but Ken (Michael Keaton) and Barbie (Jodi Benson) were one of the many highlights of the movie. It’s uncertain if Keaton and Benson will return and voice the characters, but it seems likely.

Cars 2 opens on June 24, 2011.

Sadly, one of my personal favorite films from last year was The Princess and the Frog, yet that was a bit of a box office failure. Too bad, because its wonderful blend of old school charm and animation was superb. Tangled was renamed after its original title failed to excite many at Disney, which was called Rapunzel. We shall see in November how this will all play out, as Disney is looking for a non-Pixar hit.

Their Toy Story 3, by the way, was a billion dollar success.

Here’s a delightful little animated film. I looked and looked for the DreamWorks or Pixar logo on the film, but nope, someone else is actually making and can make just as good animated films as those two powerhouse studios, and the real winners are us, the audience. Despicable Me aims for the funny bone and hits it nearly every time, thanks to a clever script that has a few jokes that could be viewed as being a tad mean-spirited, but hey, what’s not to like about an animated film that jab at orphans, bad parenting, and poop? Don’t fret, it’s all very safe, so your kids won’t be tainted, as I’m sure they’ll love the Minions so much, Universal will be doing a short film for the Gru-ray disc.

For all of the jokes, the poop humors, and the Minion antics, Despicable Me actually has an emotional chord within all of the eye-popping 3D. It might be minor, and not as profound as we’ve seen from DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon and Pixar’s Toy Story 3. The film has a somewhat original idea of two super villains battling it out for top villainy and a bank loan for future villainy. Gru (Steve Carell) thinks by adopting three orphaned little girls, that he could use them to trick Vector (an somewhat wasted Jason Segel) and get his shrink ray. All goes according to Gru’s devilish plan, until he develops his father connection to the three girls.

Despicable Me is quite enjoyable from start to finish. The emotional third act doesn’t hit a home run, but it’s a solid double with runners in scoring position, but still, it’s the clever visual jokes, the Minions, and some humor that’s safely inappropriate that makes the film a hoot.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Pixar is universally recognized as a powerhouse for a variety of reasons. They win Oscars. They create superb films. And they win our hearts. Case in point: Toy Story 3. A blockbuster, much like their other films, grossing (so far since release on June 18th) $244 million here in the States and internationally, another $100 million plus. The L.A. Times posted an interesting article today, saying that the one thing Pixar can’t conquer is Russia.

The film opened there to a paltry $5 million in 10 days there and by contrast rivals Shrek Forever After and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opened $38 and $35 million respectively in the same time frame as Toy story 3. Notoriously, Pixar has never done good in Russia. Wall-E and Up grossed only $12 million there in their entire theatrical run. The reasons? “People here didn’t grow up seeing the first two movies, so they think a film about toys is just for young children,” said Paul Heth, chief executive of Russian theater chain Kinescope. “Everyone in the market here is a bit shocked at what the film has done, given its quality.”

Russia has had a recent heat wave that has sent many to different areas to cool off and when the first two films were released in the 1990s, Russian theater count were low, until recently, with a huge boom in new openings. Russia is also one of the international’s best animation markets. Disney hasn’t issued a comment on this yet.

We bitch and complain, yet here’s the facts of 3D: there are a little more than 8, 989 3D screens at the start of this year and by this year’s end, there will be 15, 300. Obviously the higher ticket prices aren’t a really a factor as some are thinking and studios are releasing a slew of 3D films this year and even in 2011, that number is on the rise. With all of this, just one uncertain factor remains: will audiences be burnt out of 3D films?

Certainly TV companies and manufactures are thinking so, with releases of new TV sets capable of 3D and TV stations like Discovery 3D and ESPN 3D, all but shows the demand of what is still a ‘wow’ factor. Just last Tuesday, Sony released the first stand alone disc, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D for capable Blu-ray players. With some of Hollywood’s top directors exploring 3D options like Cameron, Scorsese, and possibly Nolan, it seems like it all weighs on consumers shoulders if the format will fade away like it did at the end of the ’50′s and ’80′s, or blossom into a new medium families can enjoy. With a Pixar record for Toy Story 3, that includes 3D ticket sales, of a $109 million opening weekend, for now it looks bright for 3D’s future.

Toy Story 3 is out now in theaters and after you see it, you’ll believe that this is a great final chapter to the trilogy. Lee Unkrich has revealed on his Twitter and to MSN that Toy Story 3 will not be the last time we see Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), but don’t expect it to be in Toy Story 4.

“Well, I really tried my best to end the story of Andy and his toys and bring that story to a close in a really nice way at the end of this film. That being said, we know that people love the characters, love Woody and Buzz, and would hate to say good-bye to them completely. I don’t know that there would ever be a ‘[Toy Story] 4.’ We don’t have any plans for one — but we are trying to find ways to keep the characters alive. We have announced we’re going to do a short film in front of ‘Cars 2′ that uses the ‘Toy Story’ characters. We’re going to keep them alive; they’re not going away forever.”

June 24th 2011 is the date for Pixar’s next film, Cars 2, so it seems possible, much like the short film they did with the Monsters, Inc. characters, that this is the route we’ll see these characters again.

It’s just not going to happen. Each of the last few Pixar films, there has been this collective train of thought from people, thinking that this next Pixar film is going to be the one that misses the mark. They can’t all be good, right? When is Pixar going to fail? I really don’t know why this mentality exists and why, like vultures, are we waiting for Pixar to stumble? It’s just not going to happen, so expect another “this is why Pixar is so great” review. Sorry to be so boring, but in each frame of animation, Toy Story 3 deserves it, or rather earns it. This is why Pixar is the head on top of the animated world’s shoulders. Toy Story 3 tells a story that deserved and perhaps needed to be told, as it’s a funny, lively and emotional film that will resonate long into Pixar’s future.

Where do our toys go when we grow older? Andy is readying himself for college and with iPods and laptops keeping his attention away from Woody and Buzz, the gang is on a one last ditch effort to be played with. Alas, they find themselves packed away, heading towards retirement in the attic, but by chance and misfortune, they wind up at a daycare. Did Andy betray them? Toy Story 3 concludes the arc of a child’s favorite toy’s life cycle and its reflection on that, is the emotional chord that will tug at the heart strings. And tugs it does. In fact, Toy Story 3 might be the best example of Pixar finding that good old Disney charm that Walt wanted in each and every film. It’s a film so good, that it echoes why we love those Golden Age of Disney films like Bambi and Pinocchio. That’s no easy task, as they’ve tried and came close mostly, exceeding only a fraction of the time.

Where as most other studios take the sequel formula into paint-by-numbers areas, Pixar proves that regardless of the numeral after the title, it’s the story that matters most, over 3D or the potential box office due to name recognition. The climax will leave you with a handful of waded tissues, as Andy reflects on what made these toys so great to him growing up. To spoil this adventure, like most other critics have prior to me, is blasphemy. It’s a journey that every once-a-child must take. Sadly, the Sid’s of the world won’t care about its emotional chord that should strike you deep into your heart. Their loss. Toy Story 3 made me want to find my two old buddies I grew up with, that are quietly laying in an old cedar chest at my mom’s house. I wonder if they still think about me? I wonder if they know how much they meant to me growing up?

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Day & Night is the new Pixar short that preceded Toy Story 3 and it’s a classic in the making. The film is a brilliant use of cell animation and CG, a playful give and take by the differences in the two non-speaking characters, only to have a timely and timeless message of each others differences and how accepting them with an open-minded could lead to new possibilities. Simply wonderful.
