The Tourist,

Frank (Johnny Depp), a mild-mannered American on vacation in Venice, Italy, is befriended by Elise (Angelina Jolie), a breathtakingly beautiful woman with a mysterious secret. Soon, their playful romantic dalliance turns into a complicated web of dangerous deceit as they are chased by Interpol, the Italian police, and Russian hit men in this suspense-filled, international action thriller.

The project revolves around employees of an investment bank during a tumultuous 24-hour period during the 2008 financial collapse. Baker will portray a ruthless, high-powered securities broker who oversees the characters played by Kevin Spacey, Stanley Tucci and Zachary Quinto and drives his colleagues to win by any means necessary. Bettany will play a top-tier trader, unabashedly unafraid of who he is even as the crisis deepens (THR).

Principal photography will begin at the start of next week in New York. Bettany will appear in theaters again next year in The Tourist and starring in the comic book adapted feature Priest. You can check out Baker on the small screen in CBS’s hit television show The Mentalist.

Inglourious Basterds

The film properties that are already under the StudioCanal wing as a production company include Donald Petrie’s Where Rainbows End and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s The Tourist. Kruger recently wrapped filming her role as Gina in Jaume Collet-Serra’s upcoming thriller Unknown White Male, set to be released sometime in 2011.

Nachmanoff has a couple of nice writing notches under his belt, the most notable being Traitor and the upcoming Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck picture The Tourist. Principal photography is expected to start up in July, giving Lautner enough time prior to filming the two parter Breaking Dawn, with a yet to be announced release date.

The tale starts up when a princess is kidnapped, threatening a long-standing peace between men and giants. A young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giants’ kingdom in hope of rescuing her (Heat Vision Blog). McQuarrie is the third scribe to be attached to this project, the previous two giving it a shot being Darren Lemke and Mark Bomback.

David Dobkin and Neal Moritz are producing together under Original Film with New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures attached to the project. Singer was previously attached to putting together the prequel X-Men: First Class until he jumped ship to completely focus on Jack the Giant Killer along with other projects on his slate. McQuarrie put together the script for The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, that’s currently in the middle of filming.

“Both Tim Burton and Angelina Jolie had last spring been rumored to join the project, which Disney has been kicking around for a while as a way to mine its library, among other things. Burton’s involvement remains unclear as he contemplates several projects. But sources say that, as of the last few weeks, Jolie is keen on the film and would like to sign on to play the titular villain.”

“There’s no deal (or, for that matter, script) yet. And it’s unclear if Jolie’s involvement would be conditional on Burton moving forward with it too. But it’s nonetheless notable that Jolie — who has no new movie after shooting the international thriller “The Tourist” — is actively engaging with the material and could, according to sources, very well star in the film when all is said and done.”

Jolie’s manager couldn’t be reached to comment on the news, but with no new projects lined up just yet, I think it’s safe to say Jolie will accept. I do love the idea of telling the story from that perspective, and I could definitely see Jolie in the role. The only problem I have with this is that Jolie hasn’t been known to star in kid friendly movies, with the exception of Kung Fu Panda.

The Tourist is poised for a 2011 release date under Columbia Pictures with Spyglass Entertainment and Studio Canal. Bettany recently has been lurking around the big screen for the past couple of months, first in the period piece The Young Victoria and then in the supernatural thriller feature Legion.

Set in the rugged mountains of 1929 North Carolina, “Serena” follows a man named George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they create a timber empire. Serena not only takes to the woods, but she also pushes her husband to commit more and more ruthless acts. When she learns she cannot bear a child, Serena sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately (THR).

Nick Wechsler is producing the picture with no set release date at the moment, since the project is still knee deep in pre-production. Jolie is in the middle of filming the Florian Henckel von Donnersmark feature The Tourist which is poised to come out sometime in 2011.

Jolie will play an Interpol agent who draws an unwitting tourist (Depp) into her attempt to locate a criminal who was once her lover, Variety reports. Producing the feature is Graham King and Tim Headington and is eyeing a spring start date for initial filming. The GK Films and Columbia Pictures film is setting themselves up for a to be announced 2011 release date.

There is no director signed on for the project at the moment which is being pushed for an early 2010 filming date. The feature is under Spyglass Entertainment and Columbia Pictures. Graham King is producing under GK Films with Tim Headington, Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Johnathan Glickman also producing. If an acting duo like Jolie and Depp were to happen onscreen, it would be a filmmaker’s wet dream. Then again, many suspected for that to happen with Depp when he joined up with several others in the summer release of “Public Enemies” and it slid into oblivion after a couple of weeks. The film is expected to be released sometime in 2011.

Along with the woes of trying to scoop up Jolie immediately for a tentative early 2010 filming start, Spyglass is on the hunt for a director. Again its a matter of the previous person dropping off, in this case director Bharat Nalluri who’s better known for his work on “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”.
