Well, The Playlist was able to interview screenwriter Drew Pearce, and took the time to explain whey the film was delayed. It’s actually very simple, The Avengers. “Basically, ‘The Avengers’ came along and everything else at Marvel got put on hold for a year. But the script is there, we’re good go. It’s kind of like [being] at the airport when you’re waiting for your slot to take off with Marvel, and we’re hoping we get a slot next year. Fingers crossed. They’re very happy with it, so hopefully it happens,” he said. Makes since as The Avengers is shaping up to be one of the biggest films on next year, and the studio would want to put their focus on getting that film right.

It’s unknown where this film is on Marvel’s list of upcoming adaptations, but they are still moving forward with Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, and upcoming sequels to Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and Iron Man 2. However, we recently heard (here) that Marvel has set two mystery films for 2014, and The Runaways could be one of those. But you shouldn’t get your hopes up on that.

Nothing else is official. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett signed on to the project, but that’s isn’t conclusive. Personally, I was hoping for a Dr. Strange movie next from Marvel…

The Film:

It’s a late Saturday night, the crowds are piling into a small venue that’s filled with smoke. Later on in the night, the smell of sweat will overcome the cigarette smell. None of this matters. The lights are dim, the roadies toying with equipment, people start to cram in. With all of this, the anticipation of music add to the excitement. Lights go down, screams erupt, the first few chords hit, and from then on, the smoke, the sweat, the beer stained floors matter not, as there is nothing like a rock concert. Particularly at a small club, mind you. While I wasn’t around for “Cherry Bomb” and the short-and-sweet fame of the Runaways, leaving the theater, I felt like I stunk of sweat and smoke nonetheless.

The Runaways isn’t anything new in the rock biopic that we haven’t seen in The Doors or Control. The arc is still the same, whether it’s an LA band with mojo rising or some alt-punk from the UK, these girls aren’t guys, and although they’re rock goddesses, it’s still sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Just don’t forget the burn out and the “where are they now?” epilogue. For some, the lack of a deep insight into the ground-breaking band will damper their spirits, but save that sorry song for a documentary on VH1. What is rock and roll? An in-your-face muscular expression, that not only charges you up, but is your voice when you don’t have one.

That’s what this film is, and if anything, it’s because of the fine acting the film has to offer that carries past its flaws. Kristen Stewart is top billed and damn good as Joan Jett. Critics and fans love thinking and analyzing roles actors and actresses are born to play, and possibly that’s who this Twilight star was born to be. But an even braver performance is from Dakota Fanning as Cherie, the lead voice of The Runaways. The actors age fits nicely in with their real life counterparts, and everything is pitch perfect. Hello, scene-stealer, hello actor-who-should-get-cast-more: Michael Sh-sh-sh-shannon (Bug, Revolutionary Road)! He owns every scene as the bands oddball manager, Kim Fowlery. Even Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween) gives another solid performance, although her role as Lita Ford is brief.

If you’re going to knock The Runaways, it’s for the lack of real depth in the characters and the jaded perspective that focuses the film on mostly Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. The film was adapted from a book by Cherie called, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway and was produced by Jett, so this could explain why someone as big as Lita Ford was dropped out of the film’s focus, especially if you already know about the real-life drama. Does it truly matter? Yes, but the film needed a focus, and that is the creation of the band, Cherie’s involvement and descent into drugs, and the relationship between her and Jett. Fault it for that, but only purists will. Regular or even non-fans will enjoy that time frame of early punk, the sex, drugs, and rock and roll all dressed up in Floira Sigismondi’s sly direction.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Sony issues a really sharp looking transfer. The film is purposely grainy and a little overcooked, but it’s the director’s intent, and it’s faithfully given a lavish HD print. It’s not demo material but it is the best looking transfer for the film, doing what it needs to. However, the DTS track just explodes like a (cherry) bomb. The rock soundtrack is a natural for having a blistering track, but there’s plenty of bass, clean dialogue, and ambiant noises for the track to fully immerse you into the late 70s. Sony delivers a knock out on Blu-ray.

Commentary: We get Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, and Joan Jett herself, as they briskly chat about the film. It’s not the deepest track out there, as we do get some silence and random observations, but when they do get into it, it’s a nice time spent.

Plugged In: Making the Film: In HD, this 15 minute piece about the making of the film with interviews, and a special chat with the real Currie (Fanning’s character) about all of this. I rather enjoyed this, even if it’s a little glossy.

The Runaways, which is a super short promo piece recut of the above featurette, Trailers, and Sony’s MovieIQ finishes out the extras.

“I would love for Kristen [Stewart] to do it.” Although the site offered no context to how that question was proposed to him, he did go onto talk about the script, which was penned by Mark L. Smith. “I love that movie…[although] I think it’s not remake-able in its form for an American audience. But the core elements of it are fascinating. I love the cult and what it’s about, and I’m also obsessed with the nature of childhood friends — growing up when one doesn’t believe the other one and the corruption between that. I’m excited.”

If this is more than just “talk” and becomes a reality, I wonder how far they’ll go with the film? The French film is certainly one of a gut-check and is quite controversial. Stewart, to me, has proved to be an interesting actress, especially in The Runaways and Adventureland, more so than in Twilight.

In the film, Bella (Stewart) once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge.  In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between Edward (Pattinson) and Jacob (Lautner) — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf.  With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse comes out in theaters from Summit Entertainment in regular screens and IMAX on June 30th. Kick-Ass

One of next month’s hottest films will be playing for the first time in front of a real movie going audience, and what’s not to be excited for? Based on a Mark Millar comics series, Lionsgate Films is certainly hoping this is another huge Millar hit like Universal’s Wanted was. The Green Band trailer isn’t doing much for some, but those who have peeked at the Red Band, have seen a wildly violent and funny film awaiting them. We think it should really kick (ahem) ass ourselves.

The Runaways

Whatever your stance on Twilight is, star Kristen Stewart is adorable and an good up-and-coming actress. Joan Jett and Lita Ford are the two notorious stars from The Runaways, an all-girl punk rock group in the ’70s, and we think this film will capture that time and music perfectly. The film features a pretty stellar cast, and it will be interesting to see if Stewart can keep Bella out of her, like she did in Adventureland.

The People Vs. George Lucas

This documentary has been hush-hush for a bit, but now it’s ready. Basically, it looks at why during the Prequel Trilogy fans of Star Wars turned their backs on Lucas or rather did Lucas turn his back on us? Should make for a neat film ala Trekkies. We’ll see, but the trailer looks funny.

Cyrus

John C. Riley and Jonah Hill team in this indie comedy about a sadden, divorcee and his attempts to get remarried. Once he does, he finds out the woman of his dreams has a hellish son played by Jonah Hill. The trailer plays odd, but we’re expecting this to be more than what a little trailer shows. This was a Sundance hit a few months back.

Predators

Oh, how lucky SXSW attendees are! They get to see a sneak peak at this summer’s hottest film, the reboot to Predators! Lots of anticipation for this film, with it’s odd casting, but will it deliver? This First Look will ease or increase our fears.

Neil Marshall presents a Special Screening Surprise

Oh, what could this be?? Neil Marshall has created two fun films in Dog Soldiers and Doomsday, but one classic horror film: Descent. What could he have in store of the attendees? We’ll see!

Getting a limited USA release soon in mid-March, SXSW offers attendees a chance to see this hot and much-talked about Swedish film first.

When You’re Strange

The new Doors documentary is shown, and for fans of Jim Morrison, we’re expecting this to be great.

With music, parties, short films, and other surprises SXSW 2010 looks to be simply amazing. Don’t fret if you can’t go. The film follows two friends, Joan Jett (Stewart) and Cherie Curie (Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. Joan and Cherie fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley, played by Michael Shannon, who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits.
