After 10 years in prison, Driver has a singular focus – to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he’s finally on his mission… but with two men on his trail – a veteran cop just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It’s a do or die race to the list’s finish as the mystery surrounding his brother’s murder deepens, and new details emerge along the way hinting that Driver’s list may be incomplete.

Faster opens November 24th.

Just landed in Puerto Rico. Shooting for Fast & Furious 5 is about to be underway…..

No word on how big of a role he will have. as The Rock is playing a bounty hunter looking for Vin. More on the film as shooting begins.

It was a cool fall night in 1995 when my uncle had decided to force the family to watch The Rock. He took out the videocassette tape out of the red ‘new release rental’ box from Blockbuster, slammed it into the VCR and pushed play. Moments into the upcoming attractions, the crackling sound of Jiffy Pop would forebode my borderline obsession with a series of films that would later redefine and resurrect the horror genre—and that series would be the much beloved Scream Trilogy.

Scream was definitely not my first foray into the horror genre, but it reminded me why I loved the genre so much and I instantly became fixated on everything Scream. Kevin Williamson’s name became as well known to me as the name ‘Hagaan Daz’ is to a single woman on Valentine’s Day. I had the first film videotaped from ‘Pay Per View’ which was the nineties equivalent to downloading movies. I also became immersed with each actor that I sought out all films from their filmographies, (from Skeet Ulrich’s Touch to Jamie Kennedy’s dreaded Sparkler) and even created a shrine in my room from the series. Yup, if I had a cell phone back then (because then it was still uncommon to see a tween with a cell) it would have had Red Right Hand as its ringtone. Looking back on it now, it’s a miracle that I ever got laid as a teenager.

My compulsion for the Wes Craven series also became responsible for my love for movie web sites as I was enduring dial up internet connections like a horny guy seeking out porn just to get the latest news, rumors, pictures, script pages and theories the net had to offer.

Now in 2009, you would think the fan web sites would be booming with information from the long rumored Scream 4, but besides Kevin Williamson’s frustrated tweeting, The “Coquettes” cheerleading and reports on Neve Campbell’s utter disdain for the series, the only thing fans have been witness to are cheap fan made teasers and posters from Adobe PhotoShop.

It has been nine years since viewers were disappointed with the unsatisfactory finale from Scream 3 and just like listening to an obese person preaching about getting into shape, we have learned to take any news with a grain of salt. Even though I was the biggest fan of the trilogy, even I roll my eyes when having to hear about Neve “I love doing straight to DVD dance movies no one watches” Campbell’s flakiness about returning to reprise the role of Sidney Prescott and then running away from the project all together as if she were a commitment phobic man fleeing from a relationship. (Even though the films were her claim to fame in the first place.)

Scream 4 has become the Indiana Jones 4 of the horror genre and I fear if the fans wait as long as fan did for that film, we might be witness to Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers swinging on vines with the monkeys to escape from Mr. Ghostface while watching a dead Randy Meeks recite rules on how to survive a tired franchise from Gale’s iphone.

Now that I have to report the news on the web rather than just read it, I have to say I am growing quite tired of hearing about this project stuck in developmental hell. I would rather hear nothing at all then to have to report on some luke warm rumor. If the studio waits any longer, the remake will be out before a new installment. So please, speaking as a true aficionada of the series, no more talk about Scream 4 until I see the status change from ‘rumored’ to ‘pre-production’ on its IMDB page.

What do you guys’ think?

This being a slow news day, I thought it would be interesting to listl the films currently slated for the 3-D treatment, and maybe some of films rumoured to take the ever popular extra dimension.

Piranha 3-D-Alexandre Aja of The Hills Have Eyes remake fame is currently in preproduction remaking this horror film scheduled for a late 2010 release.

Alice in Wonderland- Tim Burtons remake of the classic Disney cartoon is getting a 2010 release with Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter starring.

Toy Story 1 and 2 are being given a re-release in theatres and being converted to 3-D, with both looking for a 2010 release to build hype for the upcoming Toy Story 3 sequel.

Avatar- James Cameron’s anticipated first film since his Oscar winning Titanic back in 1997, is slowly creeping closer and closer to its release date of December 18th of this year.

G-Force- Jerry Bruckheimer’s upcoming children’s film featuring talking Guinea Pigs (don’t worry you read that right) is getting the 3-D treatment, and featuring the voices of Penelope Cruz and Nicolas Cage.

UP- Pixar‘s latest film featuring the voice and startling similarity to Ed Asner is coming to theatres this summer. UP, marks Pixar‘s first foray into the 3-D arena.

Battle for Tera- This animated film featuring the voices of Evan Rachel Wood, David Cross, and Justin Long is beginning it’s run on May 1st of this year.

Monsters Vs. Aliens-Dreamworks Co-Owner Jeffrey Katzenberg, has been touting 3-D technology for quite some time now so let’s see if his first foray into 3-D films is worth the trip when Seth Rogen and Reese Witherspoon lend their voice talents this March 27th.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs- The third and final (?) entry into the animated tale of scrat and the rest of the pre historic creatures make their debut this September 28th 2009.

A Christmas Carol-Robert Zemeckis makes his anticipated return this christmas in yet another 3-D animated tale this time starring Jim Carrey taking 4 roles including the role Ebenezer Scrooge.

Planet 51- The Rock stars with the beautiful Jessica Biel in this upcoming animated film which has the stars lending their voices to tell the tale of an alien planet living in fear of an alien invasion. The invasion starts November 20th 2009.

Rango-Gore Verbinski recently announced this animated tale as an upcoming project featuring the voice of Johnny Depp which will be filmed in 3-D. No release date has been announced.

Final Destination Death Trip 3d- The fourth installment in the popular horror franchise will bring viewers to 3d carnage during a Nascar type race on August 14th 2009. Thanks to killerfilm reader SagiMewtwo for the heads up.

Films rumoured for a 3-D treatment:

The Lord of the rings have often been touted as being re released in 3-D, along with King Kong as Peter Jackson was said to have been using the technology at the time.

Battle Angel- James Cameron has been stating that he would be making films in 3-D and that he would love to tackle this film as his next project. Of course he said this before Avatar so who knows when he will work again.

Re-Animator-I struggled to put this one in rumoured, as day by day it seems closer to fruition. Brian Yuzna who is the films producer, and may direct this film, has stated himself he would like to make the film in 3-D but no approval or confirmation as of yet.

The Avengers-Way too early to tell if this will come.

Crank 3- With the sequel still not released, this is very premature but there have been rumblings.

Thanks to killerfilm reader Will for pointing out that there is also rumours of Star Wars being given the 3D treatment as wel,l cuz as we all know 2 dimensions just isn’t enough. Totally forgot about this one.

Certain movies create situations in which everyone has an opinion of what the movie is about, is it good or bad, a vision or a mess. Sometimes, that’s a fine line to put an audience in. Reading reviews for Southland Tales is as good as seeing the movie. Nobody knows what the film is, much like the film, but each review is pretty entertaining like the film. Most people have considered it a complete disaster, a horrendous movie. Few have openly admitted to liking it. I wasn’t a fan like many were of Donnie Darko, it just didn’t grab me the way it did for those who champion it. For whatever reason, Southland Tales grabbed me and I enjoyed it for the most part, although it’s a wildly uneven film.

It took me awhile to finally see it, but now that I have, it’s funny to reread the Cannes Film Festival debacle, the negative reviews, the confusion, much of which I don’t blame them. Southland Tales isn’t a movie to go in, enjoy, walk out and move on with your daily duties. It demands paying attention and a chunk of your time. Running at 2 hours and 20 minutes, it isn’t easy to just pop in and watch. I think this is a strike many critics gave it. The casting is outlandish as any film, from The Rock, Mandy Moore, Kevin Smith, Saturday Night Live alumni, to Sarah Michelle Gellar and Seann William Scott. As wild as it seems for the most part it works. These actors are playing typecast against their own names and most of decent. I think the SNL people ham it up too much though.

The story is a weird long winding tale of damning conservative politics, to mirroring Revelations to a dystopian future all narrated by a solider (Justin Timberlake). I think there are just too many subplots to care about and it does hurt the film a bit. There’s one with a script that The Rock and Gellar writes, political maneuvering, a new drug, I mean there’s just a ton of subplots. Apparently, the film was longer, but director Richard Kelly had to trim it down due to the Cannes crowd ripping on it with boos.

If even you don’t understand a lick of what’s going on (I think it’s about the Second Coming in the End of Days) the film is marvelous to look at. Kelly has an eye for visuals and Southland Tales features some wild ideas splattered around. Graffiti, propaganda, news footage, it’s like Blade Runner in Bush administration. I think overall, whether you like or dislike the film, it’s so ambitious you got to appreciate it. I am not the one of many that hates the film, nor do I love it like a few, I think it never gels together and thus creating an interesting mess.

The Blu Ray:

Audio/ Video: The sound is pretty good although nothing that will kill your system. Sound, music, and bass all have a robust, warm presence. The image is pretty good too, with nice detail and colors.

Commentary: Exclusive to Blu Ray, Richard Kelly sits down to talk about the film. Don’t expect him to reveal the meaning of the film; he focuses on production notes and other information like that. Its okay, nothing to worry about if you miss it.

Prequel Saga: a graphic novel of sorts that has a ton of information about the characters prior to the film. Pretty cool.

USiDent TV: Surveilling the Southland: This is a decent making of feature. Nothing film school here, but good nonetheless.

Trailers and a 9 minute animate short round out the extras.

Conclusion: An interesting failure, that’s worth a look for the cast and the film’s ambition more than a successful story. The Blu Ray is decent at best. Worth a rent.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
