Donny: This looks like fun. I’m all about the ’80s, so I’ll be there on opening day. See it.

The Human Centipede

The IMDb plot: Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy.

Jason: I’m morbidly curious to see how far this flick goes. See it with caution.

Donny: I’d rather nail my balls to a 2×4. I hate this shock and awe drivel. Just saying. Absolutely skip it.

The Ides of March

The IMDb plot: An idealistic staffer for a newbie presidential candidate gets a crash course on dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail. Based on the play by Beau Willimon.

Jason: The ladies will see it for Clooney. Maybe one of them can review it for us. Skip it.

Donny: Two solid actors in what looks like a carefully crafted story. I’m there. See it.

Margaret

The IMDb plot: A young woman witnesses a bus accident, and is caught up in the aftermath, where the question of whether or not it was intentional affects many people’s lives.

Jason: Mmmmmmm…Paquin…drooooool. But I get her nude on HBO. Skip it.

Donny: I’m bored with Sookie. I’ll let someone else check this one out. Skip it.

Reel Steel

The IMDb plot: Set in the near future, where robot boxing is a top sport, a struggling promoter feels he’s found a champion in a discarded robot. During his hopeful rise to the top, he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who wants to know his father.

Jason: It’s the unofficial Rock’em Sock’em Robots film, which is kinda cool. And it has Hugh Jackman. See it.

Donny: I am really stoked about this flick. Robots kicking each others asses seems like one hell of a good time. See it.

October 14th

The Big Year

The IMDb plot: Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event.

Jason: I’d rather watch birds poop on my recently cleaned car. Skip it.

Donny: I’m already falling asleep. Skip it.

Footloose

The IMDb plot: City kid Ren McCormack moves to a small town where rock ‘n’ roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the populace.

Jason: Kevin Bacon and John Lithgow can’t be replaced by Glee bluster. Skip it and watch the “old” version.

Donny: I saw this flick when I was young, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be difficult to top it. Skip it.

Texas Killing Fields

The IMDb plot: In the Texas bayous, a local homicide detective teams up with a cop from New York City to investigate a series of unsolved murders.

Jason: Sounds generic. Skip it.

Donny: Looks interesting. See it.

The Thing

The IMDb plot: At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson.

Jason: I have seen the prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film, but due to an embargo I can’t say a word until October 14.

Donny: Like Footloose, I saw this flick already and don’t need to see it again. Just saying. Skip it.

October 21st

Paranormal Activity 3

The IMDb plot: In 1988, young sisters Katie and Kristi befriend an invisible entity who resides in their home.

Jason: The first one blew goat dong, and I have yet to watch the sequel. Skip it.

Donny: I’m so over this crap. Skip it.

The Three Musketeers

The IMDb plot; The hot-headed young D’Artagnan along with three former legendary but now down on their luck Musketeers must unite and defeat a beautiful double agent and her villainous employer from seizing the French throne and engulfing Europe in war.

Jason: I dig Paul WS Anderson’s overblown action, although this looks like a real stinker. Skip it.

Donny: I”m a real sucker for the Musketeers. See it.

October 28th

In Time

The IMDb plot: In the future people stop aging at 25 and must work to buy themselves more time, but when a young man finds himself with more time than he can imagine he must run from the corrupt police force to save his life.

Jason: Sexy back meets Logan’s Run? Skip it.

Donny: I know there are some legal issues lurking in the background with this one, but I sure hope they get ironed out before the release date because I can’t wait to see this flick.

Puss in Boots

The IMDb plot: A story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat’s meeting with Shrek and his friends.

Jason: I’m never tired of the pussy. Donny and his kids can see it for me. Skip it.

Donny: I’m tired of the green guy, and I’m tired of this pussy too. Skip it.

The Rum Diary

The IMDb plot: American journalist Paul Kemp takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1950s and struggles to find a balance between island culture and the ex-patriots who live there.

Jason: Yes! See it.

Donny: Love Hunter S. Thompson, love Depp, and I can’t wait to see this flick on opening day.

“It is the Board’s carefully considered view,” says the BBFC about their decision, “that to issue a certificate to this work, even if confined to adults, would be inconsistent with the Board’s Guidelines, would risk potential harm within the terms of the VRA, and would be unacceptable to the public.

The Board considered whether its concerns could be dealt with through cuts. However, given that the unacceptable content runs throughout the work, cuts are not a viable option in this case and the work is therefore refused a classification.”

If you wish to know more about the why of this decision, just be forewarned of plot spoilers below:

“The principal focus of The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) is the sexual arousal of the central character at both the idea and the spectacle of the total degradation, humiliation, mutilation, torture, and murder of his naked victims. Examples of this include a scene early in the film in which he masturbates whilst he watches a DVD of the original Human Centipede film, with sandpaper wrapped around his penis, and a sequence later in the film in which he becomes aroused at the sight of the members of the ‘centipede’ being forced to defecate into one another’s mouths, culminating in sight of the man wrapping barbed wire around his penis and raping the woman at the rear of the ‘centipede’. There is little attempt to portray any of the victims in the film as anything other than objects to be brutalized, degraded and mutilated for the amusement and arousal of the central character, as well as for the pleasure of the audience. There is a strong focus throughout on the link between sexual arousal and sexual violence and a clear association between pain, perversity and sexual pleasure. It is the Board’s conclusion that the explicit presentation of the central character’s obsessive sexually violent fantasies is in breach of its Classification Guidelines and poses a real, as opposed to a fanciful, risk that harm is likely to be caused to potential viewers.”

Keep in mind two things: 1) Even A Serbian Film got a rating and played in the UK; and 2) this might not impact IFC Films, who are releasing the film in the US.

Wow, though, wow.

The Film:

2010 has been the year of the (human) centipede and I’m not referring to some cycle of the Chinese calendar, but instead I’m talking about The Human Centipede (First Sequence), a film that had every one either talking or whispering about this side of Christopher Nolan’s Inception. For whatever people think the film is, it isn’t, yet the most interesting aspect of the film isn’t the “100% medically accurate” tag line, it’s the pop culture that’s blossomed under the stitching of this ready-made cult film.

This overly-large cowboy-hat-wearing writer/director Tom Six created something, whether people think it is vile or not, that caught a certain wind under a sub-culture of movie-goers. T-shirts, posters, necklaces, tattoos, and even a rumored action figure line has sprung up overnight after its release via Twitter, Google, and word-of-mouth. Seeing a girl with the human centipede tattoo sprung across the top of her feet, signals a sub-culture that was ready to rally behind something that dared to be the freak show that they could all attend, and that’s exactly what Tom Six fed them.

There’s been plenty of discussion about The Human Centipede and if it’s just there for shock value and gross-out appeal (here). Sometimes, who cares about subtext. I didn’t even want to look for it here, and since the Fall of the Drive-In, The Human Centipede (First Sequence) is the best film since their demise 20 years ago. It’s a creature born from the depths of Internet search engine oddities, a pleasure-filled freak show that doesn’t mind you staring. Ebert refused to give it a star rating, saying “It is what it is and occupies a world where the stars don’t shine.”

Tsk, tsk. He praises Un Chien Andalou, but fails to see the grindhouse appeal of this surrealist piece of fun schlock? The Human Centipede is pretty much a Frankenstein story envisioned for our S&M, bondage sub-culture that has gained more popularity than the missionary position did at the advent of the sex. While it has a fairly generic story structure, it succeeds with the people it needs to succeed with. Sarah Palin or those Teabag Party don’t need to see this or understand why The Human Centipede exists. It’s here for those that Google-searched “Two Girls and a Cup”, despite their friend’s warnings, and were gleefully repulsed.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: IFC Films delivers a decent HD disc. I remember seeing the film in HD on Video-on-Demand and being pleased with the results, yet it is a HD TV broadcast. For whatever this means, the disc is about the same as the VOD service. It looks good, not great, nor did I expected it too. Clear and detailed, yet as an upscaled 720p transfer, it does feature a few soft scenes. But overall, it’s a fine HD picture. The audio is a victim of the production, being in Stereo 2.0 and not a 5.1 mix. It’s good, clear, but flat in every regard.

Commentary: Tom Six goes solo for this and while he repeats the on-screen action too much, there’s times when this track is interesting, especially when he delves into the crazier parts of the film. But overall, I’d say he needed a moderator or just fast-forward to those parts and listen.

All extras are in standard definition, sadly.

Director Interview: For about six minutes, Tom Six chats about the origin of the film.

Behind-the-Scenes: A ten minute raw on-set footage with little direction as to what we’re seeing. Too bad. Since the commentary was ho-hum, maybe a tighter making-of, which this should have been, would have been appreciated.

Casting Tapes for the lead actresses and some interesting Foley Sessions are some quickie featurettes. A single Deleted Scene is featured. Well, I guess there are two HD extras: the film’s Trailer and Poster Gallery.

Conclusion: A cult film for those who like circus freak shows. Decent Blu-ray, but having the DVD would be okay too.

The Film: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Six says this film will be “100% medically inaccurate” and will make “part one [look like] My Little Pony“.

The director is tip-lipped about what the sequel’s plot will hold and is currently filming in London with hopes of a Cannes appearance.

An older German man (Dieter Laser) identifies himself as a retired surgeon specialized in separating Siamese twins. However his three “patients” are not about to be separated, but joined together in a horrific operation. He plans to be the first person to connect people via their gastric system, in doing so bringing to life his sick lifetime fantasy “the human centipede”.

I don’t love this poster, but I do want to see this flick.

Press Release: Beverly Hills, CA (October 6, 2009) – Screamfest horror film festival is headed back to Mann Chinese Theaters in Hollywood CA from October 16 till the 24 to showcase the newest onslaught of fear and terror from up and coming filmmakers. Started by producer Rachel Belofsky in 2001, Screamfest provides a venue for filmmakers to present their films to members of the film industry in hopes of gaining distribution deals.

Twenty-one feature length films are being presented over the eight-day festival. Among them are the opening film, The Tournament, staring Kelly Hu (X2:X-men United/The Scorpion King), Ian Sommerhalder (Vampire Diaries), Robert Carlyle (28 Weeks Later) and The Canyon Staring Yvonne Strahovski (NBC’s Chuck). The centerpiece film The House of the Devil offers a Satanic twist on the classic baby-sitting job gone wrong motif. Screamfest will be closing with The Fourth Kind, a philological thriller staring Milla Jovovich as a psychiatrist who suspects extraterrestrial beings are involved in the disappearances of her town’s people. Also a strong representation of foreign horror is present in the films Bajo La Sal from Mexico, Before the Fall from Spain, and Macabre from Indonesia.

Screamfest also offers a short film series that gives both student and non-student filmmakers a chance to show case their works. Among the Student shorts are Clemency which Rachel Belofsky, Screamfest founder and director, described as “Very strong.” Excision is another student short that shows how far a sister will go to save her younger sister from a deadly lung disease. In the non student shorts category Tinglewood exhibits very innovative and unique creature designee and The Vampire Assistant provides us a glimpse at the very un-glamorous life of an undead’s familiar.
