When Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to seek refuge during a thunderstorm, they make their way to a nearby castle. The owner of said castle is Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. His home is ripe with colorful characters like, Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien) the handyman, Magenta (Patricia Quinn) the domestic, and Rocky (Peter Hinwood) Frank’s plaything and creation. It doesn’t take long for Frank to seduce both Janet and Brad (his devilish charm is hard to resist), then chaos and much singing and dancing ensue.

While The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a box-office failure, it took on another life as a midnight movie. Its campy, sexually charged, musical/sci-fi/horror hybrid nature made it a perfect fit for cult film status. The live shadow performances featuring fans dressed as the characters from the film acting out scenes in front of the screen, and audience members shouting loudly after dialogue queues have become a legendary, breeding a subculture all their own and still continue today.

I didn’t see The Rocky Horror Picture Show until I was 14 years old and at first I didn’t get it. Years later when I was around 16 or 17 I saw it at a midnight Halloween screening, and I was blown away by the atmosphere the shadow performances provided. With that said, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (35th Anniversary Edition) is a solid release, but it’s for true fans of the film. Because as much fun as the film is, it can’t hold a candle to seeing it at a midnight screening with the shadow performances.

If your a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show I highly recommend picking up this killer film, and if by chance you have never seen it, then pick it up and experience cinematic history.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

The audio came in loud and clear, filling my ears with fond memories. The video has this flick looking better than it ever has. For a flick like this there are bound to be a few rough spots, and there are, but they don’t take away from the experience.

Special Features

Beyond the Shadowcast: This is a cool feature that has fans competing for positions in the shadowcast. Very entertaining and worth checking out.

Trivia: This pop-up trivia was pretty boring to me, but major fans might find this nugget interesting.

Still Gallery: Prerequisite gallery found on most discs, but still worth checking out.

Karaoke: A cool karaoke track that is available with or without the vocal tracks. Fun for fans of the film.

Digibook: Along with the flick and the cool features, the case itself is actually a small book containing stills and behind the scenes shots. Beautifully put together and a highlight of this release.

Most of the other features such as a documentary, trailers, and deleted scenes have been ported from previous releases.

The Flick: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
The Blu-ray: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Al Pacino looks like a dead ringer for Jack Kervorkian, or as most people called him, Doctor Death. HBO Films premiered You Don’t Know Jack some time back and it won accolades from many critics. DVDActive reports the film will street on October 26.

“Dr. Jack Kevorkian (1928 – ) in the 1990s, when he defies Michigan law assisting the suicide of terminally-ill persons. Support comes from his sister, a lab tech, the Hemlock Society president, and a lawyer. The child of survivors of the Armenian genocide interviews applicants: his sister video tapes them. He assembles a device allowing a person to initiate a three-chemical intravenous drip. The local D.A., the governor, and the Legislature respond. In court scenes, Kevorkian is sometimes antic. He’s single-minded about giving dying individuals the right to determine how their lives will end. He wants the Supreme Court to rule. He picks a fight he can’t win: is it hubris or heroism?”

Victoria Barkley heads her adult brood on the Barkley Ranch in California’s San Joaquin Valley, near Stockton, in the 1870s. Heath is the illegitimate son of Victoria’s husband Tom (who is dead at the time of the series). Bank robbers, horse thieves, revolutionaries and land grabbers keep the Barkley’s hopping.

“I am so thrilled to be filming this project, not only to honor my father and Miss Stanwyck but to bring a great woman’s part to the screen as head of this historical family saga,” Edelman Johnson said to THR. No word on when filming is expected to start up.

After it’s run in the Toronto International Film Festival, it lied dormant for awhile without any studio or production company making any serious bids.
Solitary Man stars Jesse Eisenberg along with Michael Douglas, Mary Louise-Parker, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito and Jenna Fischer. The plot revolves around a car magnate who watches his personal and professional life hit the skids because of his business and romantic indiscretions. The script is also written by Brian Koppelman who’s previous written works include Rounders, Knockaround Guys, The Girlfriend Experience and Ocean’s Thirteen.

Leaves of Grass is one of the many films that will be premiering at this year’s South By SouthWest Film Festival taking place in Austin, Texas. Sure, a lot of people have no idea what it’s about, but now you will.

When Ivy League classics professor Bill Kincaid receives news of the murder of his estranged identical twin brother, Brady (both played by two-time Academy Award® nominee Edward Norton), in a pot deal gone bad, he leaves the world of Northeastern academia to travel back to his home state of Oklahoma. Upon arrival, he finds that reports of his brother’s death are greatly exaggerated, and he’s soon caught up in the dangerous and unpredictable world of drug commerce in the backwaters of the Southwest.
In the process, he reconnects with his eccentric mother (Academy Award® winner Susan Sarandon), meets a wise and educated young woman who has bypassed academia in favor of the gentler rhythms of life (Keri Russell), and unwittingly helps his troubled brother settle a score with a pernicious drug lord (Academy Award® winner Richard Dreyfuss) who uses Tulsa, Oklahoma’s small Jewish community for cover.

With a cast that obviously includes Edward Norton, Keri Russell, Susan Sarandon and Richard Dreyfuss as a drug lord, this already looks very tempting to watch. Written and directed by actor Tim Blake Nelson, make sure you stay on here to check out even more good stuff on this upcoming crime dramedy. Below there are several pictures from the official Facebook page and a trailer for you to check out.:

There are a few of us, including myself, that were wondering what happened to actor Cillian Murphy after his brief appearance in The Dark Knight. He comes back in full creepy force playing the role of John Skillpa in the latest thriller from director and co-writer Michael Lander in Peacock.

Set in the green backdrop of the town of Peacock, the story is about a train accident in rural Nebraska that gradually unveils a mystery involving the town’s bank clerk (Murphy). Also included in the cast is Ellen Page, Susan Sarandon among others.

First Showing and The Playlist are gracious enough to chuck out several new images from the feature. Unfortunately there’s no exact word yet on when Cornfield Productions and Mandate Pictures will be releasing the thriller, but here’s hoping that it will be soon. Scroll down below to look at them all.:

I’ll make no bones about it, I am a huge aficionado of the work of New Zealand auteur Peter Jackson. From his early horror films (Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and Dead Alive) to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, he is a fanboy at heart, who is living out his dream of making films and leaving his imprint on the world of cinema. He has never forgotten that no matter how many special effects you throw on the screen, no matter how good a technician you are, it’s the story that brings together the heart and soul of a picture.

Based on the best-selling tome by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones tells the story of 14-year old Susie Salmon, who is raped and murdered by her neighbor in rural Pennsylvania on December 6, 1973. She is transported to an in-between realm between Heaven and Earth, where at one moment it can be beautiful in its scenery, and in another melancholy, with reminders of the world she has left behind.

She is befriended by a spirit guide Holly (Nikki Soohoo), who encourages her to move on and let her family heal their pains. Her father (Mark Wahlberg) and mother’s (Rachel Weisz) marriage has become fractured as Jack spends his time looking for his daughter’s killer and ignores Abigail, who takes time away from the household so she can deal with the loss of her child.

Susie cannot come to terms with the fact that her life was cut short by a hollow human being who has covered his tracks and has gotten away with this heinous crime. Little does she know that she is not the first victim of George Harvey (Stanley Tucci), and if she doesn’t intervene somehow, she won’t be the last.

It’s might sound alarming to call a movie which deals with such ugly subject matter as beautiful – but it is - Peter Jackson, the Art Directors, and the CGI team have created a piece of artwork come to life with Technicolor vibrancy as seasons change and drip with colors as environments diversify depending on where you are. This is world that a young girl has created where she can be happy and surrounded by symbollic imagery of the world she left behind. This is also a period piece – and like with David Fincher’s Zodiac - the 1970′s Americana is nailed with the the clothes, technology, and innocence of a time where you felt comfortable leaving your child for a moment, long before kids were put on milk cartons when they were missing.

Across the board the acting was strong, but Stanley Tucci and Saoirse Ronan steal the show with Oscar caliber performances as the sinister killer and his innocent prey. Tucci is genuinely menacing in his role and never takes it into the over the top arena. Subtly goes along way in bringing some trust from his victims, as witnessed in his luring of Susie to a perverted room under the ground equipped with board games and soda pop. Saoirse captures the purity of a young girl who enjoys the little things in life like taking pictures with her camera and having a crush on a boy at school. She is happy to be alive in the world and has a bright future to look forward to.

Since I have not read the book, I can’t tell you if the writing team of Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and Fran Walsh (Jackson’s wife) screenplay has divagted from its original source material, but I can assure you that after a four-year rest (King Kong) from directing, Peter Jackson has delivered a long in the tooth, yet exhilarating fable that is similar to the after life ambitions seen in Richard Matheson’s What Dreams May Come. His career has come full circle as The Lovely Bones has the dramatic and fantastic elements seen in his 1996 endeavor Heavenly Creatures, which was his first detour away from scares and proving he could conquer any genre.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
