Director J.J. Abrams has long been known that he would come back to do a Star Trek 2, and while the production of the sequel has been slower than fans wanted, he’s officially on board Trekkies.

Abrams has assured us he would do the film, but only when the script was right. He wasn’t going to rush the film out either, so the release date is unknown, although Paramount might be looking to fill up G.I. Joe: Retaliation‘s old date of June 29th, 2012, but this is unconfirmed.

Either way, make it so.

Abrams and its sequel is one of the most anticipated in recent memory, but actress Kate Mulgrew thinks there should be a Star Trek: Voyage movie.

“My greatest thought was that we really must break the glass ceiling here in Star Trek. It’s not enough that I was the first female captain. There needs to be a continual push to open the door for women in positions of authority. In an absolutely equal way, of course. In talking to Bill I thought: This has been very much a boy’s club for a long, long time. I had the privilege and honor to be the first female, but that’s an establishment that needs now to be developed.”

The she adds: “They’ve worked long and hard for the past few years on the prequel notion. But I think they should go on and develop what happens to the characters after Voyager landed. In a movie.”

Thoughts?

In order to celebrate this occasion, Science Channel is airing Trek Nation on November 30th and here’s the press release for it.

“When Gene Roddenberry’s epic series Star Trek first aired on CBS on September 8, 1966 no one knew what a phenomenon it would become. Forty-five years later, the legacy and millions of fans across the globe still continue to believe that space is the ‘final frontier’ and has yet to be fully explored.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, SCIENCE is working with Gene Roddenberry’s only son, Rod Roddenberry, to produce the world premiere documentary, TREK NATION set to air on Wednesday, November 30.

The film shadows Gene Roddenberry’s son, Rod, as he explores his family legacy and the crusade his father’s passion and curiosity for exploration. Through interviews with his most devoted fans, including George Lucas and J.J. Abrams, TREK NATION follows a son searching for the wisdom of his father. TREK NATION demonstrates that Roddenberry’s work has not only inspired legions of fans across the globe, but also generated a movement which has influenced entertainment, politics, space travel, social morality and much more. TREK NATION profiles how the Star Trek franchise helped foster a timeless understanding of the human condition and captured man’s constant search for a better world.”

Star Trek was one of the most popular Sci Fi shows on television, but the series died off over the last couple years. J.J. Abrams then brought the film franchise back with his 2009 reboot, and many fans couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming sequel. But it looks as though, Star Trek could be making its way back to television in the future.

While at Las Vegas Star Wars Convention, Trek Web was able to chat with David Foster of 1947 Entertainment, who revealed that a new television show is in the works. “As you can imagine, I have to be very careful with the information that is released on this proposed Star Trek series, as we are still working with several people that can hopefully make this happen,” he said. Foster has been developing the series since 2006, and has everything planned out for a new franchise. “The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more. This is a drastic departure from the typical 8-10 page treatment of the previously pitched Star Trek series ideas that have not included even a pilot script,” he said.

But with Abrams moving forward with his sequel set to be released in late-2012, what path will this new series take. “The series is set in the post-Voyager era, and is designed to return Star Trek to its original series roots in big and mighty ways, without disregarding the other series and movies. As Star Trek (2009) was an alternate timeline, it will not conflict with any canon there either. The co-creators are avid believers in Gene Roddenberry’s ‘positive view of the future’ and intend to bring Star Trek back to its origins while moving forward with the timeline, integrating the best aspects of each of the previous series,” he said. While we won’t see another young Spock or young Kirk, we will see a younger cast of actors. But more importantly, we’ll be seeing the various races fans know and love such as Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, Vulcans, Trill.

While fans will likely agree that nothing will live up to the original series, the feedback on this project has been positive. However, Foster mentions they have yet to pitch the project to any network such as CBS.

While at SDCC 2011, screenwriter Damon Lindelof updated fans on Star Trek 2, which he states is gearing up for a January 2012 start date for filming.

“Right now my days and nights are consumed by Star Trek 2. We were supposed to dive in on that as soon as I finished Lost, but JJ [Abrams] was so busy on Super 8, Alex [Kurtzman] and Bob [Orci] had their own sort of empire to manage. Now finally the four creative minds that made the first movie what it was are all back in a room together and that was the only way we wanted to do it. And we have been doing it and I think that the bar is very high. We are not going to be satisfied with “oh this is fine.” If an idea isn’t mind-blowing or super-cool or doesn’t present the Star Trek universe in a way you haven’t seen before, but you also have to pay homage to the fans who have stuck with this amazing franchise for 40 years. So it has been very very tricky, but I think we have finally broken through and figured out what the movie is going to be.

We have been working very long and very hard on the script. It is our challenge, we have to make it better than Trek 1. We hold The Dark Knight as a sequel that really transcended the original and now that we have gotten the crew together the “what happens next?” question is something that we are taking really seriously. It has been a lot of fun but it has been really hard.”

The anticipation is killin’ us.

While doing his Twitter thing, 2009′s Star Trek screenwriter Roberto Orci tweeted that they’re thinking of doing a new animated series again for 2013, after Star Trek 2.

This is probably more wishful-thinking than something that could be a reality, since this is the first we’ve heard of it. Yet, Disney is doing the animated series thing for Tron to bridge gaps, and possibly drum up interest in another sequel. Everything considered, Star Trek 2 should be one of the more anticipated sequels not named The Dark Knight Rises, and I’m sure Paramount will look to continue Gene Roddenberry’s creation somehow, someway. Would you dig this?

Well, via his Twitter (via Trekmovie), Roberto Orci tweeted an update on the Star Trek 2 script.

This could mean a Summer 2011 start date, according to /Film. Also, Simon Pegg confirms an August start date to begin filming via his Twitter. Either way, begin the countdown.

[Kurtzman]: “Well, we have broken the story, which is very exciting. I think one of the weird challenges that we’re facing on this one is that in many ways, with the first movie, I don’t think people knew what to expect, so when we were in the writing process, Bob and I really spent our time going to things that we loved about “Trek” and it was a very unfiltered process. It felt intimate and small. There weren’t a lot of voices other than [producer] Damon [Lindelof], J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan Burke. Now, that first movie has come up and did well and everyone wants to know what happens next. We didn’t have that pressure, exactly, on the first one. That said, part of what we have to do is listen to it all, ask a lot of questions about what people’s expectations are — and then let all of that go when we sit down to write. We need to find our way back to the same kind of vibe that we had when we wrote the first one: What do we want to see here? What moved us about “Trek”? Where can we go from where we left off?”

[Orci] :”One of the big challenges is all of the characters are together now. A prequel is a pain in the butt, but one of the nice little advantages was that you get to meet the characters as you go through the story and they get to meet each other. That’s fun. We don’t that luxury of not having the entire family there together at the start of the story. So now you want the character stories to be good for everybody but also not just be there to be stories but also fit into the plot and be organic. We’re looking at a lot of the old episodes for inspiration, still. Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from “Star Trek” and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ “Star Trek” even though it’s a new story.”

There hasn’t been much talk about a release date, although a 2012 date is still a possiblity.

According to Screen Rant, Chris Pine could be Barry Allen aka The Flash for Warner Bros.

It was once thought Bradley Cooper who take the role (here), but he has since debunked that rumor. That’s all the source has, but would you like Captain Kirk as The Flash? Would his schedule allow another big event film like this?

While on the red carpet for Dinner for Schmucks, actor Bruce Greenwood, who plays Christopher Pike told MTV the “plan” is to film in January.

What should be, when released, one of the more anticipated sequels is still just talk, although it’s interesting to here from Greenwood about the film, rather than Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, or J.J. Abrams.

The hero hasn’t been seen since Ben Affleck took on a younger version of the character in Sum of All Fears in 2002. Harrison Ford famously played the character a few times in Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games. But the character got his first appearance from Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for the Red October. So who’s to play him now? How about Paramount’s own Chris Pine from Star Trek?

“We have a very good script,” di Bonaventura says about the tentatively titled Moscow. “I’m very happy with where we are today and we’re looking forward, maybe with a little luck, to starting next late winter, early spring.” The film won’t be based on any Tom Clancy novel, like the previous films had been, bu it should follow Ryan has he tries to clear his name in a terrorist plot.

“With Chris in this role, we’ve taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise,” says the studio. It was also revealed that Jack Ryan would return before Capt. Kirk. Thoughts?

Paramount allowed The Motion Picture‘s director Robert Wise to do the same.

For a detail explanation of what William Shatner would compile for the proposed film, click here and that link is also where you can find out how to help! Personally, I’m all for it. Star Trek V is uninteresting as a film and Star Trek: The Motion Picture benefited from its director’s cut, so come on, Paramount!
