The Weinstein Company has announced an October 4th release date for Wes Craven’s Scream 4 (review here), and although no word on the extras – I’m sure there will be plenty – we do get our first look at the cover art (via DVD Active):

Wes Craven on Scream 5: Eh…

Despite some lukewarm box office receipts, Scream 4 was a hit amongst fans a month ago, but the status of a fifth Scream has been up to debate. Recently, Bob Weinstein said (here) ‘he’s sure Craven will do another.’

Craven talked to EW and had a different opinion on doing Scream 5. “I’m taking the summer off. I directed and produced, and my wife [Iya Labunka] produced, both Scream 4 and the previous film, My Soul to Take, and they were both very difficult films. So we just decided, ‘You know what? We’re going to spend the summer someplace nice and not think about film for a while.”

He didn’t rule out doing another sequel either, adding: “If they get a script I’m interested in directing. The best situation would be if Kevin [Williamson] would come back.”

Weinstein nonchalantly confirms Scream 5

MTV caught up with Harvey Weinstein, who runs Dimension Films, and asked him about the performance of Scream 4, and if it warrants a follow-up, the much talked about, yet denied Scream 5 (here).

“I wish it would have been better domestically, but foreign is so strong that we’ll do over a hundred million dollars worldwide. It’s at $90 now, with about five or six major countries to go and a lot of small ones. We’ll probably do $110 million. It’s not the worst thing in the world that’s ever happened.” Then he adds, rather causally, “”I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel. I’m sure he’s going to do a sequel.”

Harvey and Bob get what they want. Yet, until I see a trailer, I’m not holding my breathe for a Scream 5.

No Scream 5?

We’ve already heard Wes Craven talk about the possibility of doing a fifth installment in the Scream franchise (here and here), but it seems the film may not be happening, at least not anytime soon. “The Scream franchise will likely end here, at least for the moment,” an insider told Moviehole. The film opened a couple of weeks ago, but hasn’t grosses as much as the studio had hoped. However, the franchise could continue “even as a direct-to-dvd franchise”, but it “stops here” for right now. While the sequels aren’t as good as the original film, it’s rather sad to see this franchise go this route.

Scream 4 – Review

If Scream 4 is about anything, it’s about legacy, more so than the 15 minutes of fame the characters are so concerned about. A lot has changed in the 10 years since Scream 3, in horror, in the Internet, in our world. Rebooting a popular franchise today is as easy as a Tweet, but continuing the fabric that made the originals so good in the first place, seems to have been lost. They say sequels are rarely as good as the originals, that sequels are of diminishing returns. If anything, Scream 4 wants to stab the Saw franchise more so than the too hip teenagers Ghostface confronts.

In other words, Scream 4 feels more necessary than the fan favorite tacked on sequels from Jigsaw. Plus, Jigsaw never got product endorsements. Scream 4, brought to you by Red Bull.

Despite poor imitators and the spoof franchise of Scary Movie, Scream always felt like the clever smart-ass that the horror genre was too nervous to invite over. Credit Kevin Williamson. Using the genre’s conventions to gleefully twist them into something new, Scream was a great horror film. The sequels, especially Scream 3 – with no help from the rapping, pot-smoking comedic Ghostface in Scary Movie -have made the clever movie seem rather quaint. Everyone knows everything about movies today. Scream 3 was the tacked on, unneeded sequel much like Saw 3D was to that franchise.

Scream 4 is as fresh as a proper remake should be, yet it still has the elements of the prior films that we enjoyed so much. It’s like a weird suicide fountain drink of being a sequel, a reboot, and a self-mocking reflection of itself. It works, it’s exciting, yet horror has changed. Even the slasher film feels supercharged, and there’s parts of Scream 4 that feel quaint. The whole long-lost brother from a different father or whatever climax to Scream 3 was overwrought, tedious, crappy leftovers of ideas that Scream hated. Luckily, the “reveal” here is startling, and purposeful. It’s about legacy like I said, and more so to Wes Craven as well with Ghostface.

As pitiful as it has been to see Wes Craven’s recent films like Cursed or the abysmal My Soul to Take, Scream 4 is as good as he has done in the late 1980s, something horror fans can be thankful for. Even if the meta humor seems a bit passed its prime, Scream 4‘s voice is as assured as it was in 1996. Just don’t mind that the irony is gone.

Amazing Alamo Drafthouse/Mondo posters for Wes Craven

With Scream 4 coming out very soon, Alamo Drafthouse/Mondo has issued two extremely amazing posters from artist Alex Pardee, who has done a one-sheet for both Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street to coincide with the Drafthouse’s showcase of Wes’ work.

Mondo, the collectible art boutique arm of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is excited to announce Wes Craven as the next filmmaker for their “Director’s Series” featuring both classic and contemporary films from the master of suspense. Mondo kicks things off with Alex Pardee’s clever and gruesome takes on Wes Craven’s two icons of fright – Freddy & Ghostface – for A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. Additional titles scheduled for the Mondo treatment include Swamp Thing, The Hills Have Eyes, and The Last House on the Left.

“It’s an honor and great fun to be chosen by Mondo to participate in their Director’s Series. I think the posters brim with wild imagination and sly humor. Thank you so much – I’m pleased my films have earned a place in your gallery!” said director Wes Craven.

Don’t expect to Scream in 3D

It seems a little odd to realize that not one film coming out the month of April (here) will be released in 3D, not even Wes Craven’s Scream 4. Director Wes Craven has already been opened up to the possibility of more Scream (here), and has been talking more and more about making a new trilogy at Cinema Con this week. It was thought he would be saving 3D for Scream 5 since his previous film, My Soul To Take, was released in 3D, but that’s not the case. “I don’t have an attraction to it. It is more of a distraction to me. I don’t have that desire to go back and do Scream 5 in 3D. But maybe there is commentary in that,” he said (via Movieweb).

However, it still remains to be seen if a fifth film will ever happen. We heard rumor (here) the studio was already looking at writers for Scream 5, but Craven has denied these claims (via Cinema Blend). “No, there is no Scream 5 script. Kevin [Williamson], when I first talked to him about this project before there was a script, he had an idea for a trilogy, so we’ll have to see what comes out of that,” he said. That’s not to say another film won’t happen, but it’s all up to Bob Weinstein. “I’m sure Bob Weinstein is open to it if the script or ideas are to his pleasure. He has very high standards. I don’t think he’s in any rush to do it particularly, but on the other hand, I think he’s open to the idea of a trilogy, so at the point when there is an idea that he’s really excited about I’m sure he will begin launching that next film,” Craven said.

May be it’s just best to wait and see how Scream 4 is received until a sequel gets moving. After all, the previous film wasn’t too well-received by many fans of the series, but hopefully this will win some back. April Movie Preview

You know that old saying: Rain, rain, go away. Come back some other day. That old saying. Well, who cares if it stops raining, because this month has some interesting titles you can escape to your favorite theaters to watch and hopefully, enjoy. That’s where Killer Film comes in and we have Donny Broussard (the boss around these parts) and Senior Writer Jon Peters to tell you what you should see and skip this month, with their usual banter. Let’s go!

(April 1st)

The Source Code

The IMDb plot: “centered on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.”

3D Option? No.

Donny: Moon is a solid flick. Duncan Jones is a director that interests me. The trailer looked like fun, even though it seemed like something I’ve seen before, a sci-fi Groundhog Day maybe? See it.

Jon: Like Donny, I loved Moon. Duncan Jones could have a great sci-fi voice. Initially, the premise feels like a left-over draft from a discarded Philip K. Dick story and the cast leaves much to be desired, but I’m not going to turn my back on Jones just yet. See it.

Insidious

The IMDb plot: “A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.”

3D Option? No.

Jon: Every year, there’s one horror film that gets all sorts of critical and fan praise. Hype. But with James Wan’s latest, is hype just that? No. Believe in the scariest PG-13 film. Ever. And this is coming from a horror fan that isn’t that high on Wan’s prior films. See it.

Donny: Unlike Jon, I really dig Wan’s flicks. I think he has a strong grasp of story and always ups the level of tension. So, like everyone else I’m itching to see a really scary movie, and I’m hoping that this is it. See it.

Super

The IMDb plot: “After his wife falls under the influence of a drug dealer, an everyday guy transforms himself into Crimson Bolt, a superhero with the best intentions, though he lacks for heroic skills.”

3D Option? No.

Donny: I’ve enjoyed everything James Gunn has done thus far. I really dig Slither, and I’m looking forward to his take on the superhero genre. See it.

Jon: Shut up, Crime! All month long, I’ve been quoting this to death. It’s hilarious. Early word has been mixed, and with Special, Defendor, and Kick-Ass, what’s left to mine with the modernistic approach? Does James Gunn have the skills to make this different than those I’ve mentioned? I don’t know, but shut up, crime! See it.

Your Highness

The IMDb plot: “When Prince Fabious’s bride is kidnapped, he goes on a quest to rescue her… accompanied by his lazy useless brother Thadeous.”

3D option? No.

Jon: I worship at the comedy altar of Danny McBride. Having James Franco, a scantily clad Natalie Portman, and my girl from She & Him, Zooey Deschanel is just added gravy. Pot humor is very hit-or-miss, but I’m willing to bet this is something to smoke to. See it like 15 times.

Donny: Danny McBride and Franco bringing the funny, and Natalie Portman in a thong. Who doesn’t want to see this flick? I’m totally there. See it.

Hanna

The IMDb plot: “A 16-year-old who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives.”

3D Option? No.

Donny: This flick looks f**cking awesome! The music is slamming and the action looks fantastic. See it.

Jon: An action film from Atonement‘s director? Hmm. While the score by The Chemical Brothers will rock, can it overcome its Bourne Identity premise? Everything looks good on paper. See it.

Scream 4

The IMDb plot: “Ten years have passed, and Sidney Prescott, who has put herself back together thanks in part to her writing, is visited by the Ghostface Killer.”

3D Option? No.

Jon: Wes Craven hasn’t had the best of luck with studios over the last few films. Even this was marred by interference, reshoots, and rumors. Call me crazy – and many do – but this is going to rock. New decade, new rules, same old Scream? Nothing wrong with that. It can’t be another Scream 3, right? Right?! Stab it…I mean See it.

Donny: I am 100% ready to get reacquainted with Ghostface. See it.

Fast Five

The IMDb plot: “Dominic and his crew find themselves on the wrong side of the law once again as they try to switch lanes between a ruthless drug lord and a relentless federal agent.”

3D Option? No.

Jon: I just love how the series got revamped with Justin Lin’s Fast and Furious. It got out of the street racing culture and went just old school action. That film and this, has some wicked old fashioned stunt-based action and great car crashes. But, for me, this is all about Vin Diesel vs. The Rock aka See it.

Donny: I’m not a huge fan of this franchise, but for some reason I’m a little excited about this sequel. The action looks intense and of course the girls are gonna be stupid hot. I’m there. See it.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

The IMDb plot: “The adventures of supernatural private eye, Dylan Dog, who seeks out the monsters of the Louisiana bayou in his signature red shirt, black jacket, and blue jeans.”

3D Option? No.

Donny: I LOVE this comic, and I’m STOKED about this flick. I have been waiting for this to hit the silver screen for quite a while. See you all there on opening night! See it.

Jon: I’m too in love with Cemetery Man to fully embrace TMNT‘s director’s remake on the source material. Oh, I’m interested, but like VOD interested. Skip it.

April Spotlight

13 Assassins

The IMDb plot: “A group of assassins come together for a suicide mission to kill an evil lord.”

3D Option? No.

Jon: Takashi Miike can be hit-or-miss, but he’s usually on with these action/samurai-type of films. Early word from festivals is that it’s balls-out epic. I expect no less than Miike’s brand of violent and odd. See it.

Donny: I know I’m gonna get all sorts of hate for this, but I’m not really a Miike fan. I’m gonna let Jon see this and I’m gonna skip it.

Coming to theaters April 15th, is Wes Craven’s Scream 4 and Cinema Blend has its latest TV Spot.

Dimension Films is sure hoping this is horror’s next big hit. Seems like every other day we’ve got a slew of new images to tell you about (here, here, and here), so is it working?

Wes Craven has been promising that Scream 4 is the bloodiest Scream film yet, and with yesterday’s pics (here) and now the one below, I can’t argue with him there.
