According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci, and Damon Lindeloff are working hard on the script, and is expected to be finished for the holidays. A release date has already been set, and we can expect Chris Pine, Karl Urban, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the cast are expected to return. However, it’s still uncertain if Abrams will return to direct, but will be producing. Of course, the studio “definitely wants him.”

Details on the story are being kept secret, but we’ve heard the tone will be similar to the first. We’ve also heard that Khan will not be the villain, but an old villain from the previous franchise will be brought featured (here). Whether or not that character will be the primary villain is still unknown. Production is looking to begin next summer.

Update: Trek Movie gets word the script won’t be done by Christmas, but in early 2011.

Star Trek 2 is scheduled for a release in June of 2012.

UK’s SFX Magazine (via Trek Movie) interviewed Abrams, Robert Orci, and Alex Kurtzman about the film, but remained vague about details. “ The universe that Roddenberry created was so vast. And so it’s hard to say there’s one particular thing that stands out as what the sequel must be,” Abrams said. He also notes this is one of the greatest challenges about re-inventing the universe. While many fans want to see Khan re-introduced to the new universe, there’s a possibility that we may get another new villain. “Introducing a new villain in the sequel is tempting because we now have this incredible new sandbox to play in,” Orci said.

However, fans also want to see Klingons brought in for the sequel. “On the other hand, some fans really want to see Klingons and it’s hard not to listen to that,” Orci said. The writers also want to keep it fresh, and not do a re-hash of old ideas to please the fans. The film has recently been said to have to same spirit as The Dark Knight, which many think means the sequel will have a dark tone. But Kurtzman denies this concern. “ The first one had dark elements, but was ultimately very warm. We’d hope to strike a similar balance [in the sequel],” he said. It’s still unknown if Abrams will return to direct or if he’ll be only producing. Production is scheduled to begin next summer.

On his Twitter (via /Film), has returned from his Post-Lost vacation and is set to help write the story.  There’s nothing known about the story just yet, but Orci and Kurtzman stated on Saturday that a story exists and that “the next phase is to get together and try to destroy it.” The team has reportedly decided on the villain, but the sequel will really be “about how does the team now that they are on their journey, live together as a family, so that is still a big engine of the narrative.”

The duo have set their eyes on a hiring writer, who’s has come up with a great take on the flash comic. All that’s left to do is send it to the studio. The producers also commented the character is “something unique about it terms of the fact that the zombie in a sense is a protagonist in it.” Humanity in a zombie isn’t something that has been shown in any previous zombie movie, which is what attracted the duo to the project. The will possibly be set in the present, and will preserve the grittiness of the comic.

The writer, who’s name hasn’t been revealed, isn’t committed to anything until he gets paid. The duo is thinking about sequels just yet, and are working on movie at a time. Xombie is based off an online animated series, and is written by James Farr. The comic is about a zombie cop, named  Dirge, who is trying to save a young girl from zombies.

“I bug J.J. on a regular basis and he just fobs me off,” he laughed. “But I saw Zoe Saldana recently and she reckons that it’s going to be soon. I would imagine it’ll be toward the end of the year, but I can’t guarantee it.”

We should know from past reports that Zoe Saldana isn’t the most credible  person when it comes to news on the Star Trek sequel. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently writing the script, so we may hear some news on that sooner or later. We know for sure that it won’t be Abrams’ next film, as he is already working on a secret project, a Cloverfield sequel and Mission Impossible: IV at the moment.

Now, with the Internet working hard to debunk every movie plot and secret out there, Michael Bay had been denying Megatron’s return left and right, as well as throwing out false information just to throw off bloggers and other news hungry people.  But today, one of the films writers Robert Orci announced today at these forums :

“Megatron Returns!”   ”Keep it Quiet !”

No real shocker here, as many did speculate that the Decepticon would return for the sequel, but it’s always good to have this confirmed ahead of time!

The film is once again being directed by Michael Bay and written again by Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci.
