Gangster fans will remember recently in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, “Pretty Boy Floyd” was featured as Channing Tatum played the role. Now, director Wayne Kramer (Running Scared) wants to direct the film where he takes the center stage for Myriad Pictures, based on a script from Kevin Bernhardt. Kramer told THR this about the film he wants to make:

“My approach is to bring 21st century style and energy to Kevin Bernhardt’s meticulously researched screenplay without sacrificing the verisimilitude of the period or over-sensationalizing the characters themselves…At the heart of ‘Pretty Boy Floyd’ is a great love story about an outlaw on the run who can’t stay away from the woman he loves, no matter how destructive the relationship is for both of them — which ultimately leads to his demise.”

Floyd started early in his criminal career, notably in the Kansas City Massacre of June 1933, where four officers were shot and killed, although he denied the allegations. As a fan of the 1930′s WB gangster films, I hope this will rock.

Gangsters make the world go round. It’s certainly been true for cinema, as almost as talkies began, films on gangsters have been piquing movie-goers interest. The key gangster pics from Warner Brothers especially, have left their trademark on the overall history of film, as some of our most beloved actors (Cagney, Bogart, and Robinson) have played gangsters, and do I dare say that the public’s fascination with these crime-loving anti-heroes all began here, a lineage that is still being mined in current slang and hip-hop from these films, because the gangster is the perfect capitalist American. Their thug lifestyle is a perverted, but attractive version of the American Dream.

Michael Mann’s Public Enemies captures a lot of what I like about the 1930s WB gangster films, except for one crucial element: his film isn’t in black and white. Oh, what a delight that would have been, as Mann and his screen writing team rip a page right out of those film’s heydays, with each line of dialogue, with each Tommy gun fight, and with each swaggering step every time John Dillinger walks (Johnny Depp). Instead of going 100% nostalgic, Mann uses some HD cameras, to film the look of his gangster opus. I will admit, it seems jarring at first glance, and will cause a huge topic of discussion, but this approach displays an intimate feel to film, as if it is happening in real time. After awhile, you start to dig the intensity it brings to each scene. Mann is no stranger to using these cameras, as we have seen recently from him in Collateral and Miami Vice. I don’t doubt some people will have trouble with the look, but the real trouble is his use of what sounds like on-set audio. It’s borderline horrible; we sometimes can’t hear an actor as it sounds muffled, gun fights are loud and shrill, and the overall ambiance of a scene is lost. I know most will complain about the look, but it’s used in a neat way, the audio, not so much.

The film is littered with incredible talent in front of the camera; the fore-mentioned Johnny Depp is perfectly cast as Dillinger, the infamous gangster. Dillinger is a slimy bastard, but warm to good folk, and Depp is the perfect actor to be a slimy bastard. The film is about Dillinger’s crime wave of bank robberies, but it’s not a detailed account of his biography. The film is almost more about the use of “G-Men” and the new Crime Bill, that stated cross state robbery is now a felony. Big time stuff that eventually changed crime and laws forever in our country, a country ravage by gangsters, so much so it got the President involved at the time. As much as the film brings up these ideas, they don’t go to deep, sadly, as Mann is too eager to film his expertly staged gun battles.

I’ve heard it’s pretty faithful to the real life story, and while I commend the film for not following the gangster film conventions of the rise and fall of our anti-hero, the film needed more characterization. Outside of Dillinger’s simplicity- “I like baseball, movies, and you. What else do you need to know?”, little is devoted to his crew or even Christian Bale’s character. While the escaping from prison scenes and the constant shootouts are a blast to watch, and again, perfectly choreographed, there’s little to it, making for a borderline hollow film. Mann’s lucky Dillinger is charismatic, thanks to Depp, and there is a built-in appreciation and love for gangsters, because the film could have been a bust. I would be lying if I didn’t get a kick out of seeing fedoras, suits, Tommy guns, back on the silver screen again, with these actors. The rise of Hoover is interesting, and I can’t say it enough, Mann’s staging of the gun play is bar none, top-notch, it’s just that Public Enemies is a really good film, instead of what should have been a superior drama smacked dab in the summer. I hope kids recognize how gangsters were, as they aren’t just a term that is easily thrown around like now days. It’s about class. Mann’s film has class, as does John Dillinger. Despite some flaws, get ready to love gangsters all over again.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: One issue I had when I viewed the film theatrically, was the audio. It felt unfinished and front heavy. Sometimes sound effects would drown out dialogue. Here, on Universal’s disc, the audio is a powerful and intimate experience. While not as surround heavy or as ambient, the track duplicates the theater presentation faithfully, yet I still had issues. The dialogue is low, making them seem like they’re mumbling. I expect many will be turning the volume up. It’s not a fault of Universal, it’s just how Mann had the sound in the movie. The picture quality is even better, since Mann used HD cameras, the look is super sharp and clear. Clarity and details are extremely high. A near flawless presentation.

Commentary: Mann delivers a great track. It’s a thoughtful look at the characters, both in the film and in real life, more than a how-to making of. History buffs will dig this, more than a film school kid. Highly enjoyable, regardless.

All extras are in HD.

Larger than Life: Adversaries: Running ten minutes, we get a historical look at the Dillinger/Purvis rivalry, with Depp and Bale talking about them too. What’s even cooler, is the newsreel footage shown here.

Michael Mann: Making Public Enemies: Here’s what Mann’s commentary lacked: a well made look at the making of the film. Lots of good information here, with set footage and interviews.

Last of the Legendary Outlaws: This nine minute piece is all about John Dillinger and his gang. Awesome piece.

On Dillinger’s Trail: Real Locations: This featurette explains how using real location where Dillinger was, helped the crew and actors in the film.

Criminal Technology: I really enjoyed this featurette, as it focused on the growth of the FBI and the law enforcement during that time.

Digital Copy and the Trailer round out the extras.

Conclusion: Not quite a masterpiece like Heat, but a solid gangster flick nonetheless. Universal’s Blu-ray is top-notch though.

The Film: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Welcome to Killer Film’s New Release Tuesday for December 8th! Before we look at what is being released today, let us remind you that you can get your ordering on at Amazon by clicking on the cover art.

Public Enemies

I love gangsters. I love Depp. I love Bale. Yet, while this was a pretty good film, all things considered, we were expecting a great picture. Plus, I’m hating Michael Mann’s use of digital film making like he done in Collateral and Miami Vice. The sound design was horrible. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Potter fans rejoice! Here’s your big day! Looks good, but I’ve never been a fan of the series. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

The Cove

The highly-praised documentary will stir strong emotions and tears from everyone who have seen it. (Formats: DVD only) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

World’s Greatest Dad

Okay, Bobcat is one crazy film maker. Case in point: this film. Dark humor doesn’t give it justice, but whatever you call it, it is one of the year’s funniest films. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Julie and Julia

I guess pairing up the uber-cute Amy Adams with film’s best actresses in Meryl Streep, did little to arouse much interest, but reviews were good. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa: Criterion Collection

If you’re a huge fan of his, you’ll probably own most of his work on Criterion’s DVDs, but here’s one mega-set containing everything Criterion owns the rights too. (Formats: DVD only) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

New to Blu

Alphabet Killer

Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon

Cyclops

Leave it to the master at getting a film an Oscar nomination or even yet a win. Harvey Weinstein is already making his preliminary rounds and stating Public Enemies is now the official start of the Oscar campaign regardless of the fact that its barely July and there are but a handful of quality films that have been released thus far. Harvey Weinstein goes on to congratulate Johnny Depp stating: this is the performance where Johnny Depp shows all the range of acting. It’s the leading man as a character actor, it’s the character actor as the leading man, it’s the awareness, the silences, the romantic who becomes enthralled with Billie (played beautifully by Marion Cotillard), but it’s also the flinty, self-aware John Dillinger who knows what good public relations is, who knows what his public persona is, who knows what his characteristic of what he would do and what he wouldn’t do is, and knows whether an action is something “that the people would like.”

Whether or not Weinstein owes other studio heads a favor with his grandstanding it does seem in good sportsmanship and something rarely seen when an opposing studios gives such high kudos to the competition. Weinstein himself before his split form Miramax films had given the studio well over 150 Oscar nominations.

Gangsters make the world go round. It’s certainly been true for cinema, as almost as talkies began, films on gangsters have been piquing movie-goers.

Michael Mann‘s Public Enemies captures a lot of what I like about the 1930s WB gangster films, except for one crucial element: his film isn’t in black and white.

What else do you need to know?”, little is devoted to his crew or even Christian Bale‘s character.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Regardless of anything you do during these warm months; swimming, vacationing, picnicking, you’ll be there in a cold theater for the summer movies. It never fails, year after year, each summer promises big hype, big action, and big laughs. But what to see? There’s a lot of flicks aiming for you and your (important) dollar this summer, everything from cartoons, to 3-D spectacles, to franchise pictures, so let us, Killer Film, in our attempt at infinite wisdom shuffle through each of the four summer months to see what you should and shouldn’t see. To keep it all simple, we’ll state our reasonings on whether you should see it theatrically or not with a brief opinion and a See It or Skip It. Of course, we’ll be seeing everything so check back with our reviews to see if we we’re spot on, but now onto Summer Preview: July.

(July 1st)

Public Enemies

Jon: I a big fan of gangster films, especially the WB films from the 1930s and ’40s, with Cagney, Bogart, and Robinson. There’s something about this film that has that old time gangster feeling to it. Two of my favorite current actors are in this; Bale and Depp, and Mann is a decent director. It’s nice to see a drama highlighted for a summer date, as high profiled as this is, and the nature of the HD camera vs film Mann has been doing, should bring up some good discussions. See It

Donny: Who doesn’t want to see Depp and Bale together in a gangster flick? This might just be the best movie of the summer, so you can bet your ass I’ll be in the theatre watching Michael Mann’s magnum opus rock the silver screen. See It

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Jon: I might be a snob, but anything outside of Disney, I just have a hard time liking. The first Ice Age was a decent time, the second I skipped, so the only reason I’d see this, is they brought dinosaurs in it-oddly (since Ice Age came after dinos). The 3-D looks alright, but anyone not expecting this to bank should have their head examined. But how many times can Skat be funny? Or now, that female squirrel? Skip It

Donny: You are a snob Jon, but I’m with you when you say this is going to make mad bank at the theatre. I sorta dug the first one. but truthfully I was never a huge fan of this franchise. I’m not looking forward to yet another Ice Age flick, although I know my son is going to drag me into the theatre. So my advice is to do what I wish I could. Skip It

(July 10th)

Bruno

Jon: Borat was a smooth stroke of genius, and not because it was funny, but the interesting take of cultural differences Cohen plays out between American’s feelings towards other cultures is highlighted. I predict Bruno will do the same. I’m really excited for this film. See It

Donny: The man is stupid funny. I can’t wait to see this flick. See It

Blood: The Last Vampire

Jon: This could go either way. Based on a pretty cool anime film of the same name, this could be a camp-filled B-movie or a chore to sit through. I really can’t tell right now. Early word isn’t good, but vamps are huge right now, so it’ll be interesting to see what audience it aiming for: horror, action, Twilight girls? Hmm, tough call but I’ll say See It

Donny: Long before Britney Spears made every man in America feel guilty for thinking a schoolgirl was hot, anime flicks were putting hot nubile virgins with guns into schoolgirl outfits. And this flick is a testament to that statement. A hot young vampire dressed in schoolgirl garb kills vampires. What’s not to like? See It.

(July 17th)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Jon: I will be the happiest man ever when this series gets put to rest. I don’t hate it, in fact, I’ve seen a few, but I cannot get into this franchise at all. Once, I was talking to this girl who wanted to pull a huge Harry Potter marathon one night after I got off of work. I said, right then and there on the phone, I was receiving a violent migraine, so I don’t think it’ll be good to do that. I never talked to her again. That’s my Harry Potter love. Not my thing, but I can understand why people enjoy them. So, for me I’ll Skip It, but for you, See It.

Donny: Don’t bash the Harry Potter sir! Harry rocks, and because I’m a HUGE fan of the books I do enjoy the movies. While the flicks themselves will never trump the books I’m looking forward to seeing the latest adaptation of one of my favorite literary characters. See It

(500) Days of Summer

Jon: Besides loving all things Zooey Deschanel does (anyone listening to She & Him?), this anti-romance if you will, just might be one of the summer’s best for one reason: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This will be his coming out party, as he has been on the verge of doing so for a few years now. Welcome. In my opinion, the theme of the film, the stars, the feelings I get from the trailer, makes this the one summer film to see. See It.

Donny: I’m happy Jon was able to finally profess his admiration for Joseph Gordon Levitt, and for once I agree with him. I really want to see this flick. Zooey is always cute and JGL is always solid in whatever role he takes on. See It

(July 24th)

G-Force

Jon: Disney’s long term love affair with talking animals continues. Looks lame, but hey, are we the audience for this? No. If you aren’t burned out of 3-D family films like Up, Ice Age 3, here’s another one. Skip It

Donny: “Poop in his hand, poop in his hand!” I’m only going to say that my kids will want to check this one out, but I’m gonna recommend that anyone reading this Skip it.

Orphan

Jon: The trailer makes me mad. Why, if you’re adopting a child, pick the freakiest little girl the orphanage has to offer? Unless the trailer isn’t showing the levels of possible depth, this might be as forgettable as horror gets this year. Skip It

Donny: I have no desire to see this flick. I’m totally over creepy kids, so I’m planning to use my position as editor-in-chief of this website to make Jon see this one so that I don’t have to. Skip It

Shrink

Jon: Could be a nice off-beat drama for those who are sick of robots, cartoons, and big comedies. Spacey looks good again. See It.

Donny: I’m really looking forward to this flick. I haven’t seen Spacey look this good since Consenting Adults or Usual Suspects. See It

(July 31st)

Funny People

Jon: Apatow’s name has been on almost ever successful comedy in the last few years, but here is his only third film. To tell you the truth, I’m not a big fan of 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up, but what has me excited for this is the apparent balance between comedy and drama the trailer promises. Early word is Oscar nominations. Adam Sandler looks like he’s in fine form, a rare sight. I’m hoping he’s more Punch-Drunk Love than Zohan. Everything is lining up for this to be a special picture. See It

Donny: This is my most anticipated flick of the summer. I am counting the days until I get to see this picture, so ignore everything Jon said about not liking 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up (who in their right mind doesn’t like those flicks?) and make sure your in the theatre to see this one (stand in line if you have to). See It

Thirst

Jon: This will be playing in a few select cities on this date, but for those of you in those cities (I’m seeing only NYC actually), See It. Chan-wook Park is a great director, and not just for Oldboy. He’s carved a special international niche for himself, as a director that is crafty, smart, and reliable. His segment in Three…Extremes was about an extra seeking vengeance against a director, but the early scenes we’re on a set of a vampire film, which is what this film is about: vampires. While there might be vampire fatigue coming, I’m very interested in his approach.

Donny: I’m interested in this flick, but not as much as Jon is. I’ll let him check it out and recommend that you See it.

Aliens in the Attic

Jon: I rarely outright dismiss a film based on a trailer, but I want my 2 minutes back. Skip It.

Donny: I rarely outright agree with Jon on a film based on its trailer but I also want my 2 minutes back. Skip It

While there are considerable spoilers in the review the reader does go on to say: Micheal Mann has found his perfect blend of drama and action in this picture. As well as he combined his style of handy cam, and set shots. All and all, it was his best film yet. Johnny Depp gets more and more outstanding as an actor every film he makes. Christian Bale, is as he always is… fairly dull. (sorry for any Bale fans out there, I know, Bale was the bomb in Batman yo!… but still) There are tons of cameo’s from stars that you’ll recognize but can’t think of their names off the top of your heads.

I would be surprised if this film doesn’t make it’s run as a might contender for the best picture of the year in 2009. I would give it a 10/10

Head on over here to Joblo for the full review.

2009 is shaping up to be a HUGE year for movies. With the box office running the gamut of films ranging from horror, 3-D, and family films, to big event films from James Cameron and Zack Snyder.

Here are some of the biggest films to look out for in the coming year:

Avatar: James Cameron is set to revolutionize the movie going experience this December, with his epic sci-fi tale being shot in 3-D, and infused with live action characters. Not much is known as to the actual plot as Cameron is keeping the film tightly under wraps, but he’s sure to blow movie goers minds.

Lovely Bones: Peter Jackson returns to theatres with his adaptation of the best selling novel by Alice Sebhold. The film tells the story of a murdered child who watches her over her family from heaven, and who struggles with her decision to let her family heal or seek vengeance.

Watchmen: Zack Snyder’s highly anticipated adaptation of Alan Moore’s seminal graphic Novel which stands as one of Time magazine’s 100 best novels from 1923-present. Anticipation could not be higher for this film though it’s release is still in question due to a court decision to withhold the films release from Warner Bros.

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen: Michael Bay created a fun action packed spectacle with the first Transformers film last summer, and is set to return the favor again this year with it’s sequel. It reunites all the original cast members plus a few new transformers thrown into the mix. Look for the first trailer for this film to air during the superbowl.

Bruno: Sasha Baron Cohen returns to theatres this summer with his original creation of Bruno, a gay fashionista who fancies himself the voice of Austrian youth. The film is scheduled for release May 15th. Look for this film to enrage and elicit laughter the same way his last creation did…

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Hugh Jackman returns to the screen with his now classic portrayal of the fan favorite, Wolverine character from the X-Men universe. This time the film will lose it’s McG direction as it enlists the help of director Gavin Hood from Tsotsi fame. Fellow mutants along for the ride include Gambit, Deadpool, Sabretooth and many others.

Funny People: Judd Apatow’s latest comedy focuses on the stand up comedy world with Adam Sandler, and cast regulars Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann. Production did start this past October with Sandler and Rogen attending various comedy clubs rehearsing and filming material for the film.

Drag Me to Hell: Sam Raimi’s long awaited return to horror has Justin Long and Alison Lohman in the cast. About an ambitious loan officer who denies a loan to an elderly woman who then places a curse on her and transforms her life into a living hell which she must get out of before it becomes too late.

Shutter Island: Director Martin Scorcese’s follow up to his oscar winning hit film The Departed returns him to familiar ground. Reuniting him with Leonardo Dicaprio, and bringing in Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow among others, to bring the tale of Dennis Lahanes now classic novel to the screen.

Public Enemies: Michael Manns latest film reteams him with Christian Bale and Johnny Depp to tell the tale of a depression era government trying to overtake mobsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Pretty Boy Floyd.
