This is the case once more as Meet the Haunteds, a story of a white family that moves in to a house haunted by black ghosts that have been there since the 1970s. Steve Carr is set to direct with his Rumpus Entertainment label attached to the picture.

Producing is Carr and Jason Taragan under Rumpus with Scott Mitchell Rosenberg under Platinum Studios. The graphic novel in question that’s already set for adaptation is not even published yet, that will not take place until sometime in 2011. Meet the Haunteds is written by Chris Wichtendahl and illustrated by Billy Penn (Variety).

Carr’s previous directing credits include Next Friday, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Daddy Day Care and Are We Done Yet?.

It’s that time of year again. As a critic, it’s our job to try to accurately critique a film, and throughout the hundreds of films we see, there are going to be some stinkers, if you will. Sad, but true. Now, remember this list is only of the films I have seen, and even though I have seen hundreds of films, there might be some I have missed. There’s also no sense in ranking these films, since they all are pretty awful, so I’ve alphabetized them instead. Here’s my Worst Films of 2009, all of which I hope you avoid.

The Final Destination

Even with the gimmick of 3-D and the return of Final Destination 2‘s director David Ellis, this film was a complete disaster. The plot was barely there, the look of the film felt like a bad SyFy channel movie, and even worse is the script. The script is filled with not only horrible dialogue, generic kills, one dimensional characterization, but depressingly bad stereotypes of African-African characters. They are never once called by their name, only their job title, and a bum character tells the white hero he saved the day. Ouch, and ugly. Truly the final destination for this franchise. (Read the original review here.)

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

I’ll say positive thing about this train wreck: it has the makings of one fine Rifftrack. Horrible CG, goofy dialogue, and a over-the-top performances make this possibly fun idea, into a bad film. Why is there a slew of flashbacks? Drink a shot every time one happens, it’s the G.I. Joe drinking game! Even for nostalgia purposes, it’s a waste. (Read the original review here.)

Halloween II

As much as I like Rob Zombie, his music, his genre love, his Haunted World of Superbeasto and Devil’s Rejects, his take on Halloween is a mess. Even though I felt he had some promise for a no holds barred sequel, Zombie again drops the ball, by making a confusing boring slasher. Michael Myers isn’t scary here; he’s a bum-looking man, an interesting angle, yet Zombie never does much with it. The whole mask story of the first film is wasted, as if Zombie felt the need to get rid of the iconic mask. Ugh. The movie is like a visual stick-in-the-mud. (Read the original review here.)

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

It’s nothing but a product for a quick buck, that’s all this unneeded sequel was. The formula is tired, the 3-D was unimpressive, and it’s humor is generic. I don’t doubt that your kids have scratched up the first two films on DVD, so luckily for them, 20th Century Fox made this. How else do you explain the money it made? (Read the original review here.)

The Limits of Control

I don’t understand Jim Jarmusch, and I didn’t understand this spy film. Great performances are wasted in a confusing slapdash of double-speak and aimlessness. A character moves left to right, sits down, speaks a few syllables and leaves. There’s the movie right there. The only thing more tedious than watching this film, is watching paint dry. (Read the original review here.)

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

A lucky direct-to-DVD film that got a theatrical release, we’re treated to some very generic comedy. tons of fat jokes that wear thin fast, a silly plot, predictable, you’d think Kevin James would be in better vehicles for his “routine”, but maybe not. This film was number one at the box office for two straight weeks, making over a $100 million dollars too. People, I thought we were in a Recession? This film came out nearly 11 months ago, and it’s still lingered in my mind with its awfulness. (Read the original review here.)

Pink Panther 2

Steve Martin is better than this. He’s funnier than this. It’s amazing that he’s so unfunny here, that the supporting cast gets a chuckle or two out of us. Same old, same old. At least the wonderful Emily Mortimer makes sitting through this bearable. Hopefully, this rebooted franchise dies, so poor Peter Sellers can stop rolling in his grave. (Read the original review here.)

Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li

The film got little marketing and for a good reason: it’s just plain horrendous. Weak fighting, a plot as deep as a piece of paper, bad casting choices (Chris Klein as a Special Ops dude? Really?!), and one bargain basement explosion FX that sums it all up. Maybe video games aren’t suppose to be made into movies? Here’s a prime example, if we needed another one. (Read the original review here.)

Transylmania

This is an actual direct-to-DVD shown theatrically. Capitalizing on the Twilight craze, we’re treated to a an incredibly stupid film that tries to be like those Disaster Movie spoofs. Like those, it fails, becuase it’s unfocused and worst of all, it’s not funny. Pass. (Read the original review here.)

Year One

Harold Ramis should know better. This film could’ve been way funnier, and judging by the recycled jokes that led to some minor chuckles, one should fear a Ghostbusters 3. Michael Cera and Jack Black are game as cave men, but the religious-based setting isn’t a good idea for some generic jabs at the Old Testament. Not because I’m religious or anything, but it’s ground that isn’t ripe for humor. Or maybe Ramis lost it? That’s more likely. (Read the original review here.)

Time flies when you are watching movies-a lot of movies, and 2009 has already reached its halfway point. Here at Killer Film, we try to catch as much of the films being released as possible, and we would like to present our 2009 Mid Year Report. Keep it mind, this is only what we have seen, and we can safely say we wish we’ve seen more, but we do still have the second half of the year to catch up. Without further ado, here’s our take of 2009 so far.

Quick Thoughts on the Year so far…

Donny: While I love horror, drama, documentary, and every other genre of film out there, my favorite by far is comedy. In my opinion there is nothing better than watching good joke unfold on screen, but on the other hand if said joke doesn’t work (Year One) then my beloved genre falls flat on its face. Luckily, this year we’ve had some amazing comedies grace us with their undeniable funny. So far my favorites include; The Hangover, Adventureland, I Love You, Man, and the awesome direct to DVD 18 Year Old Virgin. I’m also looking forward to Funny People and I want to see mega-hottie Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body. Lets hope the rest of the year offers up the good to make this year more than mediocre.

Jon: I think so far, it’s been a decent year as of July 1st. A few select films are really worth seeing, others are okay. I suspect the rest of the year will have great documentaries, as I haven’t seen much so far released this year. I have enjoyed seeing studios taking chances on unique films like Watchmen, Observe and Report, and The Hangover, and that’s refreshing. 3-D films have been big and constantly pushed, a trend we will see more of. For the most part, 2009 started off slow, for me, and is just now picking up. See you all at the end of the year!

Serena: Being a huge horror aficionada, I was disappointed by the initial lackluster horror films slashing their way to the big screen, but I was quite surprised by how exceptionally well done the mainstream horror fare was this year. I also was blown away by some hidden gems like Pontypool, Dead Snow and The Children (my fave film of 2009 so far) that all reminded us why foreign films are owning the horror genre these days. However, most of the big budget anticipated action films of 2009 have all left a bad taste in this reviewer’s mouth. So far 2009’s films are a far cry from last year’s jam-packed list, but I’m looking forward to being entertained by Jake West’s Doghouse, Diablo Cody’s anticipated horror follow-up, Jennifer’s Body and to see how Juno is going to react to being left for dead in a cave in The Descent 2.

Now, to the good stuff….

Best Films

Donny: The Hangover, I Love You, Man, Adventureland , Che

Jon: Pixar’s Up, Goodbye Solo, and Che

Serena: The Children, Pontypool, The Last House on the Left, Drag me to Hell

Worst Films

Donny: Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Bride Wars, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li

Jon: Pink Panther 2, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, and Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li

Welcome to New Release Tuesday for May 19th! It’s a big week for new releases since Memorial Day is almost here, but remember you can click on the cover art to go to Amazon to pick up these discs!

My Bloody Valentine 3-D

The 3-D effects were amazing, the digital sound was superb, so for those reasons I can’t wait to test it out at home. Wonder how it will translate? I dug the film, which has its flaws, but was a fun ride anyway, but Serena Whitney and Donny were lukewarm on it. Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Rent Donny says:Rent

Fanboys

The long awaited comedy is here, after an all-too-brief theatrical run. I doubt if the extras will tackle the two year controversy between the filmmakers and the Weinstein Co., but form the clips and trailers I’ve seen, this looks hilarious! Jon says: Rent Donny says: Buy

Valkyrie

I still don’t know why this film was playing the “find a release date shuffle” because its pretty good. I think there’s elements missing from making this great, but its a solid film for history and thriller fans. Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Paul Blart: Mall Cop

One of 2009′s biggest box office returns is here and I’m still dumbfounded as to why. Maybe it was the recession was just starting and people wanted escapism. I doubt if any of our beloved readers were dumb enough to see it…right? Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Avoid Donny says: Rent

True Blood: Season 1

Filling the void of vampire TV shows, since Buffy and Angel are gone, here’s the mega popular show finally on DVD. I heard really good things about it, so I might have to break down and play catch up. I’m already predicting it to be miles better than Twilight! Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Rent Donny says: Buy

Outlander

Some films just have no luck. Why wasn’t this released a little wider? I mean, Vikings, aliens, what a perfect scenario for a film! I heard good things, but not great things, Donny has seen it and dug it. Adding to my que now. Jon says: Rent Donny says: Buy

New to Blu

Batman (1989)

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition)

The Machinist

Driven to Kill

With the huge ‘concern’ of going green nowadays, it seems Sony has joined the bandwagon because they will begin selling all their DVD’s starting with the May 19th release of the surprise hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop with a new casing to try and reduce their carbon footprint. According to the folks over at Variety: all of Sony’s single-disc standard-definition DVDs will incorporate ultra-light cases that feature 20% less plastic than Sony’s previous single-disc standard DVDs and will be covered with plastic shrink wrap that is 20% lighter. The printed artwork that wraps around boxes will use paper that contains 30% post-consumer waste. Previously, Sony had been using 100% virgin paper.

In the end Sony hopes to reduce their carbon emission by 2 million pounds by the end of this year. Whether that is attainable with just a change in DVD and Blu Ray cases we shall see. Either way it is commendable to see a major studio as Sony at least trying to change the system.

Other companies in the past that have tried this new process include Lionsgate and Universal Studios. Last year Universal attempted going green with their DVD and Blu Ray releases in Canada starting with Evan Almighty as well as Lionsgate who last year announced they would release their DVD’s in recyclable materials starting in June of this year.

You can also view the status of all things green here at earth911 along with future news on DVD changes.

Previous DVD’s in the past that have been affected by the process of using recyclable materials include: Children of Men, The Good Shepherd, Alpha Dog, Smokin’ Aces, The Ultimate Matrix Collection, The Fountain and of course the Al Gore Oscar winning An Inconvenient Truth. Most of which were spurred by the the retail giant Wal-mart which mandated all of their DVD’s sold to contain 30% post-consumer recycled content, chlorine-free paper on the casing and inserts.

Jon: Seen it a few times, thought it was okay. I’m personally not a fan of sitcoms, so I won’t be seeing it anytime soon. I know it has fans and I don’t want to irk them off, but it’s that I just don’t care something like this exists.

Donny: Never seen the show. I just recently got into television, but that one flew under my radar.

Why in the hell did you two see this?

Donny: My kid really wanted to check it out. When he saw the trailer he instantly got excited about seeing it, and I get excited when he wants to catch a movie, even a movie as bad as this one.

Jon: I had a free ticket from Best Buy in my hands and I’ll see anything for free. Although, I must admit, I only do this for you, our beloved readers.

How was it?

Jon: Okay, let’s do an experiment. We have to do this in unison by the way. Just repeat after me: “Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Paul Blart: Mall Cop! Paul Blart: Mall Cop!! Paul Blart: MALL COP”!!! I bet by the time you said out loud the sixth Paul Blart: Mall Cop, you smirked. Bravo! You laughed more than I did seeing this. For more fun, repeat “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and use different tones in your voice, it’ll add more creativity than this film and you’ll have a better time too. Hell, add Redbull and say it, and boy, you’ll be tripping over words having a ball.

Actually, you think I’m stupid don’t you? Why, I’m still that Jon that has all of the insights into film and I still love Citizen Kane, but when the credits finally came up after these 87 excruciating minutes, I was so bloody close to turning around and yelling, “What’s wrong with you people? This isn’t comedy! This is barely TV movie quality. I know we’re in a recession, I know you want some stress relief, I know you’re Middle Class, hard-working people, but there’s no way you can convince yourselves that this was funny!” I wanted to ask everyone why, why would they waste $7 on this, then it came to me. They’re not readers of Killer Film and they don’t know any better.

I’m harsh, I got to let up, but this was so epically terrible. Bad guys are really bad because they wear leather, have tattoos everywhere, and have extreme sports skills. Fat people are funny to laugh at because they’re so fat and love food and can’t fit into clothes correctly. Really? Don’t assault our intelligence. If I was a bigger person, I would be so made at Kevin James for how he portrayed overweight people. It’s like being racist to your own kind, it’s so retarded, but you can bet it’ll be number one at the box office. Sad, sad, sad. Go see Hotel for Dogs if family entertainment is what you’re seeking. So, Donny, did you want to see Hotel for Dogs?

Donny: Actually Jon I don’t want to see Hotel for Dogs, but my son does, which means I’ll probably end up catching it sooner or later (hopefully he’ll just Netflix it). Also, I didn’t hate this flick as much as you did. Was it a great movie? Nope. I’m not even sure it was a good movie, but it was better than The Spirit. I know I’m going to catch heat for that comment, but at least I knew going into this one that I was going to be seeing a Nickelodeon quality flick. I knew it was going to be goofy, and I knew it was probably going to blow goats. But it still wasn’t as bad as your making it out to be. If you want to see a truly bad movie, then check out any of Ulli Lommel’s flicks.

I’m not saying that this was an awesome flick, but for parents taking their children to the movies for a little family entertainment it’s not so bad. It is what it is, a flick that follows the same formula that every other family film about following your dreams and living up to your potential does. It doesn’t offer up anything new, but it also didn’t put amazing actors like Samuel L. Jackson into an embarrassing movie trying to pass itself off a good either. It’s a goofy family film and anyone wanting more than that out of this movie is going to be seriously disappointed.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Grade?

Jon: ½ *

Donny: **1/2
