Since producer Brett Ratner has been let go following a vulgar interview consisting of anti-gay slur, Eddie Murphy has decided to step down as host of this year’s Oscars.

Murphy commented, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President, Tom Sherak, stated, “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well.”

Murphy and Ratner have previously worked together on Tower Heist.

Why? The move would place the Oscars in front of other key award shows like the SAG and BAFTA. The move might even place the award show ahead of the Golden Globes, which will in turn, drastically reduce the amount of time for awards campaigning and would also effect how the studios time the release of their award-caliber films.

That’s the impression you could get as the category for Best Visual Effects might expand from three to five. Mind you, this is not set in stone at the moment but is something that’s heavily being considered by the Academy. Read on down below to find out why this is suddenly being considered (via Variety).:

Move would help the Oscars’ efforts to bring popular pics into the show, as the tentpoles that dominate the box office charts, like this year’s “Alice in Wonderland” and “Iron Man 2,” typically are vfx-heavy.

Those favoring the change note that even though the vfx teams on a major tentpole can outnumber the cast and crew on the set, there is only one vfx category. At the same time, there are two sound categories, two screenplay categories and four for acting, so the number of names up for vfx honors isn’t out of line with other disciplines.

With so many features dripping with visual effects, do you believe that it would be a good or a bad decision to go and put in more slots for this category?

The Katheryn Bigelow directed war drama The Hurt Locker ran away with the most Oscar gold this evening, including not only the coveted Best Picture category but giving Bigelow her first directorial win. This serves as quite the milestone in Oscar history as Bigelow goes down in history as the first female to ever nab herself the Academy Award for Best Director.

One of the more surprising outcomes of the night goes to James Cameron’s Avatar which got less than what was predicted by a many of us, and surprisingly getting the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Up definitely got it’s recognition, despite losing the Best Picture category, and Crazy Heart got an Oscar more of love than previously anticipated by some.

Enough of the jibber-jabber, here’s the list of all of the winners for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards below. Air out your thoughts and let us know what you think of the winners, whether or not you agree with each one as well.:

Best Picture

The Hurt Locker (Summit Entertainment) – Producers Mark Boal, Katheryn Bigelow, Nicolas Chartier & Greg Sharpio

Best Director

Every year, we as movie fans are treated to a plethora of films that are guaranteed to work better than a bottle of Ambien. Yep, I’m talking about the Oscars.

Every once in a while, the Academy gets it right, but for the most part, they pick flat tearjerkers. Basically, if you’re a filmmaker interested in getting into the Oscar race, all you have to do is pick a subject that is sad, painful or boring. In a world where a film like The Dark Knight doesn’t get thrown into the running because it’s a superhero movie, I’m not sure increasing the number of nominees is going to change a thing.

When it comes to the Best Picture category, I’m never satisfied. This year, because of the added number of nominees, there are some flicks that I’m rooting for. But, sadly, I’m not sure they have a chance.

If you closely look at Oscar history, it’s littered with films centered on characters that have dysfunctional families, are terminally ill, mentally ill, at war, live in a year that has long since passed, have had multiple biographies written about them, were pulled from a script adapted from a novel or perhaps even a character that endured terrible hardships as a child only to spend a good part of his adult life searching for his long-lost love. Basically, Precious (based on the novel Pushby Sapphire) is the perfect Oscar nominee, but what do I know? I’m just a movie fan.

If it were up to me, I’d give the best picture Oscar to Inglourious Basterds or Up in the Air. EvenDistrict 9 would be a refreshing change of pace from the boring cinematic sleepers that usually win.

I’m excited that Jeff Bridges was nominated, and George Clooney was pretty stellar this year too, but how many times do we need to see Meryl Streep up there on the Oscar stage?

The director category is going to be interesting as well. I’d love to see Quentin Tarantino or Jason Reitman walk away with the Oscar.

Jon:

One of the things that was exciting about this year’s Oscars on paper was the expanding on the Best Picture category from five films to 10. What films would now be included that in year’s past would not have had a shot was pretty exciting to me, especially since I saw so many good films that were deserving. Then the nominations came out, making reality a deep fear I had, which was that really mediocre films would get championed.

The Blind Side has to be one of the worst Best Picture nominees in a long time, and while I liked the film, it’s quite an average production. Great story, yes, but pretty much standard studio fare.District 9 is an interesting choice, too. Science-fiction films rarely get such honors like this film has, but the Academy short-sighted itself with that pick over two universally better sci-fi films: Moon andStar Trek. I have been the minority on District 9. I felt it was confused with its handling of the documentary aspects and action film aspects, but those films I’ve mentioned have a more pleasing quality and are more emotionally involved.

But what’s new? In the history of the Academy Awards, the Academy has had a long and storied history of choosing odd titles, let alone picking winners that in time were actually that year’s weaker choice. Ordinary People over Raging Bull, anyone? In time, no one will remember Slumdog Millionaire. 2008 will be remembered as the year of The Dark Knight, a film not nominated for Best Picture.

The dual nomination for Pixar’s Up is confusing. Why Best Picture and Best Animated nominations? One or the other, please. I actually preferred Princess and the Frog, Coraline and The Fantastic Mr. Fox over Up, a film I really cherish. I would be really happy to have had The Messenger, Goodbye Solo and (500) Days of Summer replace Up, The Blind Side and District 9 for Best Picture. My winner? Up in the Air.

Outside of my quibbles with that category, I’m really excited to see the battle royale in the Best Director category. James Cameron, Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow, Jason Reitman and Lee Daniels are all deserving of their nominations. I look forward to seeing that play out. But the overall nominations look pretty strict to a few select films, showing that 2009 wasn’t the best of years. As a fan of film, I’ll be watching.

The Times nice enough to publish our thoughts in there magazine, you can reread them here.

He previously was attached to helm a picture about humiliation and the physical deterioration of the aged, but Screen Daily reports that the director pulled out of the project. This apparently is due to the fact that once the director saw a Canadian film revolving around a similiar topic, he decided to completely ditch it.

Now talk is swirling about that The White Ribbon director is taking on a different film altogether that revolves around the internet, said to be shot in different locations around the world. The feature is to be handled under Les Films Du Losange with a script that should be completed later on during this year. The White Ribbon got it’s expected recognition from the Academy this year for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. The two categories the film was nominated for was not only Best Foreign Language Film but also Best Cinematography.

The Academy Awards, love it or hate it, is part of the Hollywood DNA that a lot of people are still highly attracted to for whatever reason it may be. Despite the bad wrap that a lot of disgruntled fans have given it, we still eat it up each year from the announcement of the nominees to the final envelope being opened for that year’s Best Picture.

This year’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards is finally just around the corner. The nominees will be presented by the lovely Anne Hathaway and the president of the Academy Tom Sherak. Be sure to keep your eyes out on ABC at 5:30 A.M. PST and on this particular article here for up-to-date coverage on the nominees. Feel free to leave feedback, predictions of who will win, and even what you think of the Oscars.

However, ABC might have completely screwed things up with the sharp eye of a writer on Vulture who figured out that some of the possible nominees could already have been revealed.

Yes, this works too at the moment. If you go on the ABC News website, you go straight to their search engine and type in “Oscar”. From there a few results will emerge, a couple of those being actual Oscar nominated films/people that we should be finding out about in a few hours rather than now. Among those are supposedly Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Disney’s re-emergence of 2D with The Princess and the Frog and Mo’Nique for her role in Precious.

If this is actually true, then this feels like a case of a little kid who peeked at his presents a few hours before Christmas morning. We already know a little bit of what to expect, but it won’t be as exhilarating hearing about who is nominated because it won’t be the first time we have.

You want to get up early along with myself? I’ll be up plugging away at the Oscar nominees in an article that will emerge within the next couple of hours, so keep your eyes out and come back over here in the morning to find out whether or not this was correct and who else will be part of the nominee list.

This time though it appeals to the Best Visual Effects category, the more technologically appealing sector within the Academy that tends to cater more towards mainstream films that you normally would not see or wish you could see among other nominees in other categories.

There are quite a few films that did not make the cut, some of them include Watchmen, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Coraline, Where the Wild Things Are and Disney’s A Christmas Carol. The Academy Awards takes place on March 7th at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Here’s the list from Reuters.:

Slowly but surely were starting to wind down over to the bigger lists of the Academy Awards, and one of them that always seems to be the most interesting is what gets nominated for Best Visual Effects. Variety along with the Motion Picture Academy reports the fifteen films in the running to possibly get a grab at a nomination. Here’s the list below:

Angels & Demons

Avatar

Coraline

Disney’s A Christmas Carol

District 9

G-Force

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Sherlock Holmes

Star Trek

Terminator: Salvation

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

2012

Watchmen

Where the Wild Things Are

Of the films that were close to making the fifteen were The Lovely Bones, Night At the Museum and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now that the list is winding down to the finalists, which ones do you think should made it and which ones do you think should not be in there at all? The Oscars will be held on March 7th, 2010 and will be hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
