This was an early turn for actress Nicole Kidman.

After The Others, Quentin Tarantino says, this is my favorite Nicole Kidman performance! The future Academy Award® winner made her movie debut at 16 years old as the pouffy-haired star of this action/comedy about a cache of stolen walkie-talkies, three BMX-riding friends, and the ruthless bank robbers who will pursue them through every graveyard, shopping mall, construction site and waterpark in New South Wales, Australia. It s a high-flying ride to adventure filled with wild stunts, cool BMX outfits, creepy innuendo, cheezy synth music, an obnoxious fat kid, and gobs of fast & furious fun. John Ley (Mad Max), David Argue (Razorback) and Bryan Marshall (The Long Good Friday) co-star with thrilling cinematography from future Oscar® winner John Seale (The English Patient) in this Down Under 80s cult classic from Ozsploitation master Brian Trenchard-Smith, the legendary director of Turkey Shoot, Dead-End Drive In and Stunt Rock!

Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman are getting intimate on the big screen as they sign on to play a married couple in Joel Schumacher’s Trespass. The story, written by Karl Gajdusek and Eli Richbourg, centers on a husband and wife taken hostage by four brutal perpetrators seeking easy cash. Complications ensue amid the unexpected discovery of betrayal and deception (Variety).

The project is under Nu Image/Millennium Films with Danny Dimbort, Irwin Wrinkler and Avi Lerner producing. The script for the upcoming thriller is written by Eli Richbourg and Karl Gajdusek. Filming is scheduled to commence this August in Louisiana.

You all remember Schumacher for his abysmal directorial work in Batman & Robin, but has been gradually trying to make it up with his other films. Those that are argued to be some of the better works he’s done within the past decade include The Number 23 and The Phantom of the Opera. Later on this year he comes out with his new dramatic thriller Twelve, coming out in theaters on July 30th.

The picture has yet to sign on a director for the script penned by Jonathan Abrams. Relativity Media is backing the production and is still on the hunt for a distributor for the upcoming flick.

Kidman would play a relationship analyst who advises couples on their interpersonal dynamics before they marry. But after she meets her latest clients, the doc decides she’d actually be a better match for the groom-to-be, triggering a showdown with his fiancée (Vulture). Kidman can next be seen in a couple of other films this year which include John Cameron Mitchell’s Rabbit Hole and is in the middle of pre-production on the Lasse Hallstrom directed The Danish Girl and the new Adam Sandler comedy Just Go with It.

The romantic comedy originally entitled Pretend Wife stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Dennis Dugan is directing yet another Sandler comedy after helming other pictures like You Don’t Mess with the Zohan and Grown Ups. No word yet on what Kidman will be playing in the feature, but Decker is poised to play Sandler’s love interest with Matthews just playing a random supporting character.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it involves Sandler recruiting Aniston to pose as his soon-to-be-divorced wife and her kids to pretend to be his fake family (Variety). The script is penned by Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps co-writer Allen Loeb and Role Models writer Timothy Dowlin along with Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Heather Parry and Jack Giarraputo are producing with Happy Madison Productions and Columbia Pictures attached to the project. Columbia is expecting to release Just Go With It on February 11th, 2011.

For those of you who look forward to the Oscar race every year, or at least try to know what’s on the radar of most pundits out there, here are the films to keep your eye on in the coming months.

An Education: Winner of the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, An Education is the one of the biggest front runners in this year’s Oscar race, with across the board praise for its female lead Carey Mulligan, and raves for lead actor Peter Sarsgaard, and supporting performance by the under appreciated Alfred Molina. At this point, Carey Mulligan is the biggest front runner in all the races combined with an assured nomination and possible victory.

The Lovely Bones: Peter Jackson‘s highly anticipated return comes in the adaptation of the Alice Sebold novel The Lovely Bones. The film tells the story of a young woman who is brutally raped and murdered and watches from heaven, as her family tries to cope with the loss, and try to solve what or why it happened. One of the biggest front runners in this year’s Oscar race has already been screened a few times, and is slowly loosing steam as reviews come in saying the film is magnificent, but plays more as a thriller, rather than solid drama. Keep a look out for technical nominations, as well as nominations in lead for past Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan of Atonement, and supporting nominations for Rachel Weisz, as with as the big ones for Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay.

Avatar: To put this film, as being highly anticipated would not do the film justice with fans and fanboys, to see what the master filmmaker has conjured up with his first feature length film since 1997′s record breaking phenomenon Titanic. Oscar prognosticators seem to be at odds whether the film will be a Best Picture nominee, with the Academy changing to 10 films, but those who have seen cuts or scenes from the film overwhelmingly believe it can. Expect the film to sweep the technical categories.

Precious: Based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire : Already the front runner for a Supporting Actress win, Mo’Nique seems to be on every one’s radar at the moment, since the film’s reception at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where the film went on to win the coveted Grand Jury Prize, along with the Audience Award. The film has been slowly gaining steam towards a Best Picture nomination, as well as, a nom for Gabourey Sidibe as the film’s lead playing an overweight black woman who is pregnant with her second child, and under pressure from her cruel mother (Mo’Nique), while seeking guidance from a social worker (Mariah Carey).

Nine : On the Oscar train since the film’s announcement; Nine marks the return to the musical for Chicago director Rob Marshall in an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name. The film stars a virtual roster of Oscar winners and nominees, with Judy Dench, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and in the singing and dancing lead, Daniel Day Lewis. Early buzz has been mixed, but likely to take a Best Picture nomination, as well as, acting categories going either way for Judy Dench and Marion Cotillard.

Bright Star: Still the only female to every win the best director award at the Cannes film festival, Jane Campion returns with Bright Star, an original screenplay of her own that tells of poet John Keats and his lover Fanny Brawne, played by Abbie Cornish in a star making performance, whose previous work in Candy and Stop-Loss first put the talented actress on the Hollywood map. Though the film’s reception has considerably cooled since it’s Cannes premiere, the film is growing a strong following hoping to muster up some Oscar attention, with its best chances in the lead actress and original screenplay categories.

The Road: Loved by many, and indifferent to others, the film tells the incredibly bleak story of a father and son on their trek to to the coast in a post apocalyptic America. Viggo Mortenson returns in top form as the father protecting his son, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Both actors are looking to earn Oscar nominations for their respective performances, but with Mortenson and the film’s cinematography so far the one’s up ahead.

The Hurt Locker: One of the summer’s breakout films The Hurt Locker has been receiving raves since its premier at the Venice Film Festival last year and has not slowed down since. The Hurt Locker is primed for Oscar gold with enough love for the film to earn its slot in the Oscar top 10 list, as well as, nomination love for Best Director Kathryn Bigelow, and possible nomination for lead actor Jeremy Renner and supporting actor Anthony Mackie.

UP: With Oscar prognosticators still reeling over last year’s omission of Wall*E in the Best Picture category, UP seems to have all the right marks to fit the bill, and give Pixar its coveted Best Picture nomination, a first for an animated film since 1991′s Beauty and the Beast.

Amelia: Beloved director Mira Nair returns with the ambitious biopic of legendary pilot Amelia Earhart played by Oscar winner Hilary Swank in an attempt to get Oscar number 3. Don’t expect Ms. Swank to obtain the win, but a nomination is very likely for the film, along with coveted Best Picture nomination and long shot nominations for Richard Gere and Ewen McGregor, to have the next possible acting nominations outside of the film’s technical nominations.

Invictus: In the most obvious Oscar film out there, the secretive Invictus tells pseudo biopic of famed civil rights activist Nelson Mandela, played by Morgan Freeman and his hosting of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, in hopes to unify his country with Matt Damon, as one of the film’s rugby players. With the film directed by Oscar winner Clint Eastwood and previous Oscar track record look for Invictus to do well at the big show.

A Prophet: France’s official entry into the Best Foreign Film race, as well as hopes to crack the Best Picture race, A Prophet has earned nothing but raves, with many calling the film the best prison film ever made, with comparisons to last year’s Gomorrah.

Up In The Air: Jason Reitman returns again from the Toronto International Film Festival, after his success last year with Juno, with his new dramedy Up In The Air starring a never better George Clooney, in what folks are describing as the best film of the year so far (up till September). It’s a story of a lonely businessman working up to 10 million frequent flyer miles, who falls for a similar woman on the way played by Vera Farmiga. Look for the film to aim toward nominations for lead George Clooney, supporting noms for Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga, as well as luck for Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay.

The Informant! : Based on the book by Kurt Eichenwald, Warner Bros. is looking to gain some serious momentum towards getting the Steven Soderbergh dark comedy nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a Best Actor for Matt Damon as the corporate whistle blower.

A Single Man: After earning raves at this year’s Venice Film Festival and winning the fest’s Golden Lion Award, along with Best Actor Colin Firth, A Single Man is shaping up to be this year’s dark horse. The film tells the story of a gay college professor, who learns his lover has died. It has just been purchased by The Weinstein Company, and we all know how well they do come Oscar time.

Get Low: In the dark dramedy starring Robert DuVall in a performance earning him raves surpassing his work in The Apostle, Get Low tells the folk fairy tale of a man about a 1930′s recluse who goes as far as throwing his funeral party while still alive.

And if the film gets released this year, look for Terrence Malick to score well with his highly secretive film starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in The Tree of Life, but seeing as the man takes around 2 years per film and takes even longer in between, we can never count him in the race until his film is completed. The film’s plot has been keptsecret by the studio, but is known to be a 1950′s period peace telling a multi-generational family story, with information leaked that Malick is indeed working with CGI for the first time including pre-historic dinosaurs.

Four new Wolverines have been added to next years remake of John Milius‘ 1984 tale of homeland invasion Red Dawn. The cast already includes leads Chris Hemsworth as a returning Iraq War Marine who gets into the thick of the action, Josh Peck as his star athlete little brother, and Adrianne Palicki as the love interest.

Here are the newest members:

Josh Hutcherson will play Robert (originated by C. Thomas Howell) and become the group’s tech geek. You’ll remember Hutcherson from Journey to the Center of the Earth and Bridge to Terabithia.

Isabel Lucas will play Lea Thompson‘s Erica, the head cheerleader and Peck’s character’s girlfriend whom he desperately wants to rescue from an internment camp. Lucas most recently appeared in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Connor Cruise, who recently played the young Will Smith character in Seven Pounds, will play Daryl, the mayor’s son and best friend of Robert. He is also the real-life son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Daryl was originally played by Darren Dalton.

Edwin Hodge will play Danny (Brad Savage‘s role), “the coolest kid in school” and star wide receiver who helps establish the resistance. Hodge has a recurring role on Fox‘s Mental and recently appeared in the film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.

The new script, written by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore, will stay close to the original film. Along with a few casting alterations, the main difference will be that the bad guy invaders are China and Russia instead of the Soviet Union. The film will be directed by Dan Bradley (Quantum of Solace and Bourne Ultimatum).

The actors will spend a few weeks in military training before filming begins next month in Detroit. The film is scheduled for a Sept. 24, 2010 release.

One of the more interesting films to come out this holiday season has got to be Rob Marshall’s adaptation of Nine. The film which is an adaptation of the Broadway musical starring Antonio Banderas now stars a virtual hot bed of Oscar star with Daniel Day Lewis in the lead along with Kate Hudson, Dame Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren. Sadly of the bunch Hudson is the only Oscar loser but that’s neither here nor there. Nine tells the story of a world famous director ( Daniel Day lewis) as he prepares to do his latest film and the women he has to juggle in his life.

Aside from the enormous star power in the film and the fantastic trailer below, is it now worth price of admission alone to see Daniel Day Lewis singing and Sophia Loren’s return to film?

….and yes that was the Black Eyed Peas Fergie in the mix gyrating on the chair.

I think many people will not like Australia. I don’t think it’s the length either, as I felt at near three hours it moved by pretty fast. Director Baz Luhrmann has created a nostalgic film, reminiscent of the huge MGM epics of the ‘30s and ‘40s. As seen in the trailer or even the one-sheet, even the font is reminiscent of something like Gone with the Wind, a film many have compared it to. So, with that in mind, I enjoyed the film. There are a lot of things that some viewers won’t like. The acting, especially from the supporting cast members, is somewhat over-the-top. Nicole Kidman is that way too early on. That will immediately alienate people right there; but in contrast, it’s part of the fun.

The film is epic, grand, and every time Luhrmann has the chance he’ll show you. He pulls the camera back a lot to gives us these wide shots on the open Australian country side. At times the angle is so high, people move about like ants. I was wishing he went all out and shot this film for the IMAX. These scenes are so beautiful and huge, seeing it on such a gigantic screen would’ve been awe-inspiring. Even as such on a standard theatre screen, for these huge shots anyone slightly interested in the film should defiantly go see it in the theatre.

For the women hoping to see a grand epic love story, I think they might be disappointed. Yes, Kidman and Jackman fall in love and have some romantic scenes, but I think this is an epic story of family, not love. The film has three distinctive acts, act one is the set-up and cattle drive, act two is the love affair with Jackman and Kidman, and act three is the WWII era. Being called Australia the film focuses on two bits of history. WWII naturally, as it shows how the country got involved, but it also focuses on what’s called the “Lost Generations”. This bit of history for Australia is a stain on their country, which just got abolished in the early 1970s. Basically, these Aboriginal youths, born from whites and the natives, were sent to a mission island to get the “black breed out of them”. Kidman’s character, Lady Ashley, falls for Nalluh, and the film tracks their relationship through this cattle drive and WWII.

One of the characters I found interesting was Nalluh’s grandfather, King George, a man steeped in mysticism. He periodically pops up here and there, usually in the back ground chanting and watching over everything. Luhrmann stages some really great scenes with him, especially when he breaks free from prison after Japan attacks Australia. He walks calmly, but is shocked by this attack, something his people could never have dreamed of seeing. Buildings are exploding, fires rage, all as he walks and looks around. It’s one of my favorite scenes from the film.

Australia is a grand, epic movie in the spirit of Gone with the Wind and even How the West Was Won in some regards. It’s not for everyone; there’s humor, and the performances are cheeky enough to disinterest a modern audience. I will say it’s not as good as many had predicted. The film tries to give each character a full characterization but fails at that, as I never knew too much about Nalluh’s culture (even though it seems interesting) or Kidman’s character. But it’s a beautiful film. The cattle drive scene and the WWII scene are superb to watch as is the wide shots Luhrmann loves to use. I just wish it was for the IMAX.
