Plot details are being kept secret, but the film is said to be set in the future on an alien planet. Unfortunately, it won’t be connected to Blomkamp’s previous film, District 9. Media Rights Capital will be financing the film, but a deal has to be made for a studio to distribute the film. MRC will be looking for distributors next year, so expect to hear more casting soon.

Elysium takes place in the future and on an alien planet. Like District 9, this film will feature sociopolitical ideas contained in an action film. Given the premise and the success of District 9, Blomkamp will likely have a higher budget, but probably enough for it to be considered a low-budget film. After the fallout of what happened with Halo and the success he’s saw with District 9, Blomkamp has been against handling a big-budget film. Universal and Media Rights Capital already have a deal to make the film, and is currently looking for a distributor. Although, it shouldn’t be too hard finding a studio.

“Neil wants it and I want it. Neil’s doing another film first. Then I think if everything goes according to plan we’ll do the second film in about two years time. That story can go in so many different ways. There¹s a whole universe. I’m sure a lot of writers say that, but we actually have an entire universe.”

“There’s a million ways you can go. Neil’s actually very interested in prequels as well; he’s said that a few times. We wouldn’t do the traditional Hollywood version of the sequel which would just be 100 aliens fighting humans.”

I have to agree with him on that many don’t want your typical alien invasion sequel. However, I don’t think many fans are keen on the idea of a prequel, as they rarely workout and have many contradictions to the original film. The film is currently rumored to be in pre-production, but there’s no word on when shooting will begin.

“DISTRICT 10 (Production title at least) is now in pre-production with filming to start in the October time frame this year. Shooting locations will be South Africa once again as well as New Zealand. There has been no word on whether it will be shot in S3D or not as of yet. You will be the first to know! Peter Jackson is again producing the sequel with Neill Blomkamp directing.”

District 9 was on my favorite films of last year, and I’m very much anticipating this sequel. I do hope that Blomkamp can bring the same material that made the original so great. I just hope Blomkamp doesn’t turn out to be a “One-hit wonder”.

“We’re going to make a movie when the time is right,” he said. “We own the IP. If we want to make a movie, the scale of all the other stuff that we do changes dramatically. We make tens and tens of millions of dollars on ancillary stuff, toys, apparel, music and publishing. If we do a movie all of that will grow exponentially. We have some numbers if we do a movie, but it changes everything. It also changes our target and age demographic.”

A Halo film came close when District 9 director Neil Blomkamp was attached temporarily, but the project has been dead ever since. I think Halo could be the film that turns the video game adaptations around, creating something the fans will be pleased with while staying true to the source material.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 1-disc DVD ($28.96), 2-disc DVD ($36.95), and 2-disc Blu-ray ($39.95) releases of District 9 for the 22nd December. Extras on the 1-disc DVD will include a director’s commentary, a 3-part documentary (“The Alien Agenda: A Filmmaker’s Log”), and a Koobus Big Gun feature. The 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray releases will include all that, along with additional featurettes (“Metamorphosis: The Transformation of Wikus”, “Innovation: Acting and Improvisation”, “Conception and Design: Creating the World of District 9″, “Alien Generation: Visual Effects”).

Extras on the DVD will include an audio commentary with Writers/Directors Neveldine/Taylor and actors Amber Valletta, Alison Lohman, and Terry Crews, an Inside the Game multi-part making-of documentary, a First Person Shooter: The Evolution of Red featurette, and a never before seen theatrical trailer that was cut for the film by the filmmakers but ultimately deemed too radical for audiences. The Blu-ray release will include all of the above, plus an I-Con Mode interactive feature, and Gamer Cheat Codes (interactive specialized scene-specific audio and video commentary accessible throughout the film). Neil Blomkamp’s work on the short film is what bought the director’s name to the masses, and was at one time considered a front runner to direct a feature film based on the Halo video game.  At this time there is still no director attached to Halo.
