As far as kid’s shows go iCarly is pretty darn good. My kids and I are huge Drake & Josh fans, so when that show’s Miranda Cosgrove got her own show we parked ourselves in front of the boob-tube to check it out. Needless to say we all became instant fans of the show. Since the first season (read my review of season one here) iCarly, the show has only gotten better, so when Season 2, Volume 1 showed up in the mail box I was pretty stoked. I yelled out to my kids to tell them that I had the new iCarly set and that we’d be parking in front of the tube with some snacks to watch it.

Our excitement wasn’t premature, because iCarly: Season 2, Volume 1 was even better than the first season. I don’t get to watch the show during it’s regular airing so watching it on DVD is always a treat, and my kids, even though they see it on television they enjoyed watching the episodes again.

As always Jerry Trainor steals almost every scene he’s in, and Jennette McCurdy is stellar as Sam. I’m not putting down the rest of the cast, because Miranda Cosgrove is wonderful at the titular character and Nathan Kress is just as perfect as the nerdy Freddie Benson. In fact for a children’s show the cast is pretty impressive, turning in solid performances episode after episode.

While I enjoyed the entire set there were some standouts. iOwe You has Sam working a job she hates in order to pay back money she owes Carly and Freddie. iKiss was my by far my favorite episode of the bunch. When Sam tells the world that Freddie has never kissed a girl during iCarly she is forced to admit one of her own faults.

I watch a lot of movies, and loads and loads of television. So it’s refreshing to be able to enjoy a show with my children. iCarly is not only an intelligent children’s comedy, it’s an intelligent children’s comedy that doesn’t close the door on the adult demographic. If, like me your a parent that enjoys watching the tube with your children, then I’d recommend watching iCarly, because it is positively a killer film.

The DVDs

Audio/Video

The audio on the disc is pretty good, nothing awesome but still decent. The video is pretty crisp with really nice color, although interlacing is visible a few times. Overall I was happy with the quality of this presentation.

Special Features

The Making of “iGo to Japan”: Gives fans of the show a look at what it was like to make the iGo to Japan episode. It was a little short, but it was still fun.

Behind-the-Scenes: These short features didn’t hold the interest of my children. While I enjoyed them my kids weren’t captivated by these features.

The Show: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

The DVD: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I love television. As long as I can remember I’ve always loved watching my favorite shows on the boob tube, and now that I have kids of my own I enjoy watching their favorites with them. Also, since I have a boy and a girl it’s difficult to find content that they both enjoy, but iCarly is a show that they both agree on. So needless to say, as soon as the iCarly Season 1 Volume 2 disc appeared in the mail box my kids were ready to watch it, and because they usually can’t watch many of the films I review, I was pretty stoked about popping it into the DVD player.

From the very first episode on the disc to the very last there was once constant. My children don’t move, talk, or argue with one another while watching the DVD. It puts them into some sort of iCarly trance. They are captivated by the events that unfold in front of them. Speaking of events, let me provide a rundown of the show’s basic premise for those of you that my not have seen it. Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove) and her two best friends Freddie (Nathan Kress) and Sam (Jennette CcCurdy) host a web show called iCarly. They also spend a lot of time getting themselves into strange predicaments. Also, Carly’s brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor) is usually around to help guide the three tweens into the right direction.

The chemistry between Carly and Sam is undeniable, and Freddie’s nerdy persona only serves to enhance that chemistry. Carly is the show’s lead and obviously the role model for parents to feel comfortable with as well. While Sam is sort of an antihero who’s always getting into trouble and doesn’t do her homework. Balance all of this out with Freddie’s good boy charm and Spencer’s surprising moral sensibilities, and what you come up with is a strong children’s television show. My favorite episodes were. iPromote Tech-Foots, iFence, and iHave a Love Sick Teacher. Overall I was surprised by how watchable this show is. If your a parent looking for something that you can watch with your children, then look no further than iCarly because it is a killer series.

The Disc

Behind-the-Scenes Extras: A cool behind the scenes feature that shows off the talent these kids have. I enjoyed this feature and my kids loved it as well.

Behind the Slime with the Cast of iCarly: I didn’t love this feature, but my kids really dug it.

Special Bonus: Pilot Episode of True jackson VP: I didn’t particularly enjoy this pilot, but my son really enjoyed it. Maybe after a few episodes I might be able to get into it, but either way this is a pretty cool feature.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
