The Film:

Despite the greatness of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz, this is Edgar Wright’s most hollow film. I’ll get that out of the way now. Those other projects were full of life, much like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but unlike those films, Scott Pilgrim is too introvert for anyone else to love it. For all of the visual quirks, it gets old after a while, and the vapidness of these slackers can’t carry us beyond the blitz of eye candy. It could be Wright’s most accomplished film, evident with the stylized fights, the visual in-jokes to Nintendo games, and the tight editing, but it never fully becomes alive.

I barely have any knowledge about the comic series, although I think the book’s format probably worked better, since they could spread out the story, more than the film’s 110 minute running time. The fights between the Seven Evil Exes, gets old fast and predictable. We are just as smart as the characters, yet, for some reason Scott doesn’t get a clue, long after we already had. The relationship issues and baggage are quite universal, yet after the bludgeoning of noise and visual pop-ups, one doesn’t get the sense these characters have really learned. Beyond that, the sense of imagination is a sight to see. Wright is a talented director, but a smart director, meaning that he knows how to let us in on the jokes. But at times, he evens outsmarts himself, as evident with the climax, a wonderful yet empty calorie blend of eye, ear, and mind candy. No matter how hard the screenplay tries, it’s no deeper than its 8-bit creation.

Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Scott’s sister Stacey (Anna Kendrick) are the film’s most real characters. Ramona is flawed, chaotic, seemingly been through some a life or two. Stacey can see the plastic nature of Scott’s lack-a-daze attitude and wish-washy love affairs. Too bad the film is Scott’s. The lessons on love, relationships, and becoming a grown-up are great, but it’s too much in love with itself for any appeal beyond those kids who wear Yoshi t-shirts. It tries hard to be the alternative kids’ manifesto, but is too introverted for the rest of us to listen. That’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The evolution of the nerd culture has gotten less interesting, as it’s become more and more materialistic recently. Old nerds just don’t get the new nerds.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Universal unleashes the sonic boom with a stellar DTS track. There’s never a silent moment, as the film is as interesting sonically as it is visually, so expect your home theater system to get a hard workout. Loud, deep bass, only puts the exclamation point on a great sounding disc. The picture is great too, maybe a little soft, creating maybe not as of bright looking transfer. The colors and blacks are all sharp and detailed.

Commentaries: You get four tracks to dive into, with a wide-ranging selection of topics. To me, the most interesting was with Edgar Wright and the comic’s writer, Bryan Lee O’Malley. they chat about the origin and the ideas not used from the book into the film, and visa versa. The second track is very technical,w ith Wright again and his DP. As good as it is, the other extras included below make this my least favorite track to listen too. The next two tracks are from the actors, which are light and funny.

U-Control: Universal’s picture-in-picture track offers up plenty of storyboards and O-Malley’s comic panels are offered. It’s neat, but you can view them else where.

Trivia Track: Offering up a gigantic helping of Easter Eggs and info, this is a must-play. It’s a lot more fun with one of the commentaries, since it gives you something else to do while listening.

All extras are in HD (unless noted).

Deleted Scenes: Nearly 30 minutes worth here, with funky titles, that can be see in either a “Play All” feature or individually, with or with-out Wright’s commentary. There’s some good moments here, but for pacing on a film I thought dragged still, they’re all wisely removed. Even more in Alternate Footage and Bits and Pieces (both in SD) that cover lost improv and different angles to scenes.

Documentaries: Totaling near 90 minutes, the making-of Scott Pilgrim is the longest at 50-minutes that is one of the better extras here. It covers every detail imaginable. Really good, even if you’re lukewarm on the film. Music is covered next on the band in the film and the creation of the songs, followed by a brief virtual guitar lesson.

Pre-Production: Covering early storyboards, animatics, and casting tapes, this sucker is 90 minutes as well. In SD, since most of it is from personal cameras. It might be long-winded, but it’s a great look at prepping a film.

Visual Effects: In SD, covering the film’s look with plenty before and after footage.

Blogs covers the massive amount of videos Wright created during the film; Galleries covers the massive amount of PR used for the film, with other goodies; Scott Pilgrim vs. the Censors: The TV Safe Version is a clever, brief take on a TV edit; Music Promos covers just as it suggests; Trailers and through BD-Live, you can watch two totally unrelated movies: Tremors and Pitch Black.

Conclusion: The Blu-ray disc is astounding; a large list of worthwhile extras, all for a movie seemingly too in love with itself for us to love.

Level 1: Were you a fan of Bryan Lee O’ Malley’s comic book?

Donny: I wasn’t a fan of the comic before hearing about the flick, but I did pick it up after hearing that Edgar Wright was directing. I really enjoyed the comic’s characters and the smart writing.

Jon: I barely have any knowledge about the comic series, although I think the book’s format probably worked better, since they could spread out the story, more than the film’s 110 minute running time. More on this later, but I did like the incorporation of the comic’s art panels into the film. Otherwise, I have no clue on this series that indie kids are telling me I’m missing out on.

Level 2: What did you think of the film?

Donny: Unlike Jon, I actually enjoyed the flick. Don’t get me wrong, it’s my least favorite Edgar Wright flick, but I still had a good time at the movies, and in my opinion that’s what is really important. I found the visual style of the flick exciting and new. I liked the fact that Wright never felt the need to establish any reasons for the madness witnessed on the screen. I was impressed by the solid cast, especially Kieran Culkin. Visually Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a spectacle that needs to be seen, but compared to Wright’s previous movies it seemed to fall a little short.

I found some of the evil exes a little stale, but Brandon Routh was the one that stood out from the rest. He’s a funny guy that doesn’t get enough credit for how talented he is. The Nintendo jokes are solid, the characters are interesting, the visual style stands out big-time, but the flick never delivered the goods like I was hoping it would. I enjoyed it enough to not feel cheated, but I’m not sure I’d drop the coin for the flick once it hits Blu-ray and DVD.

Jon: Donny told one thing that was spot on: Brandon Routh. He owned as a super-cool vegan ex, as did the Vegan Police (two wonderful cameos by Thomas Jane of Hung and Clifton Collins, Jr. of The Boondock Saints II). I really can’t discount Chris Evans in his Clint Eastwood-meets-Tony Hawk character. But most of the other exes were really stale, and I think that’s because for a 110 minute film, fighting seven of them gets old. We all knew Scott would defeat them, so there’s little excitement in the how.

Level 3: Music played an important part in this flick. What did you think of the music choices Edgar Wright  made?

Donny: I thought the music fit in perfectly with the tone of the flick. However, it’s not the style of music I’d normally listen to, so it’s not a soundtrack I’m going to be running out to purchase.

Jon: The music was eh to me. I am personally very open to all genres, but after a song or two, it sounded like white noise to my ears. The opening song set the tone for the film (the pre-credit song), but after that, I didn’t get the sense of who this band was or why they defeated the other suckier bands. I tend to feel as if the songs weren’t fully thought out, as was the overall score/soundtrack, which wasn’t too bad if you’re into this thing.

Level 4: Comic books have had a huge influence on cinema lately. Do you see this trend as a good or bad thing?

Jon: It’s booming, and as evidence with Universal’s hand in helping an independent, semi-obscure entity like Scott Pilgrim. The industry is catching onto the wealth of great stories. Do all of them work, no, and people will have favorites over others, but it’s great seeing comic adaptation beyond superheroes. Although, it will always come down to box office draws, something Scott Pilgrim didn’t have, it’ll be interesting to see how much longer studios continue to adapt non-superhero titles or when the genre will bottom out. Hopefully, not too soon.

Donny: I love comics. I love most comic book movies, but I’m not sure all comics need to make it onto the silver screen. Scott Pilgrim is one of those titles that worked well enough, but it wasn’t a title that I thought need to be made into a movie. I still have faith in both movies and comics and I hope the two media continue to work together to bring stellar stories to life.

Final thoughts and grade?

Donny: As eye candy, the film totally works. As Friday night entertainment it works as well. Unfortunately, it’s also pretty forgettable. Sure, it delivers some clever lines, but it never demands the attention that it should have. I say check it out with an open mind, but don’t expect the brilliance of Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead.

Jon: The lessons on love, relationships, and becoming a grown-up are great, but it’s too much in love with itself for any appeal beyond those kids who wear Yoshi t-shirts. It tries hard to be the alternative kids’ manifesto, but is too introverted for the rest of us to listen.

Yesterday it was announced that there were reshoots suddenly going on for the highly anticipated summer movie, which always puts a bit of worry in every fanboy/fangirl’s hearts when they hear that news. However, when the folks at CHUD got around to asking director Edgar Wright about the sudden filming, this is what he had to say.:

“To be honest – I’m excited about it. We have material from Vol 6 that is impossible to resist and so even after a nearly a year of editing – it’s going to be fun to put some icing on the cake. We are not even redoing one full scene, just some bits and bobs and new jokes and beats that I wrote with Bacall & O’Malley. Both Shaun & Hot Fuzz had two and three days respectively of additional shooting. One of those bits was the granny being kicked in the face. I think we can all agree that was a good pickup.”
