Well, not really, but Megan Fox (Jeniffer’s Body, Transformers) is set to star in Apatow’s next film, a spin-off of Knocked Up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is currently in negotiations to star in Apatow’s next film, which is an untitled spin-off to Knocked Up. Her role is being kept under-wraps for right now. The only other actors attached are Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, who are reprising their roles.

They say it can only happen in the movies. It’s not entirely proven in real life, but in reel life, a geeky wanna-be seems to have just as good as a chance as the hot, young hunk, as we can count numerous examples of the nerds who eventually gets the girl in the end.

Released this past March and coming to Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Paramount Home Video June 22nd, She’s Out of My League is another great example of the geeky guy (here, Jay Baruchel) who gets the beautiful girl (Alice Eve). The tag-line is pretty brilliant for this sex comedy: How can a 10, go for a 5? Killer Film looks back at other sex comedies where the 5 (or sometimes less) got the 10 in She’s Out of My League…or is she?

The most obvious example is in American Pie where hapless goof Jim (Jason Briggs) winds up with Czechoslovakian Nadia (the gorgeous Shannon Elizabeth). Trust us, she’s a 10, yet even with web cams and his overly-curious father, Jim gets the babe by the end of the film. Let’s look at the facts of why Jim is a 5 or less: he’s a virgin that explains a lot of his horny actions like masturbation and missionary pie sex antics, yet he’s impossible when it comes to conversation with women. And let’s not forget about his little strip tease for Nadia. Yep, Jim’s helpless, yet he got the girl. Lucky guy. Lets not forget too, Jim got with band camp loving Michelle (Alyson Hannigan).

Perhaps the most perfect example of this is in Knocked Up. Just look at the tag-line and that poster!

If this guy, (sorry Seth Rogen) got with Katherine Heigl, then by goodness, we all stand a chance. That’s what makes most of the comedy work in this Apatow film. He’s constantly playing with the goofy guy who gets the girl, like in 40 Year Old Virgin. Maybe because Apatow himself was that 5-rated guy growing up, who got the 10 in Leslie Mann, but let’s not hate and instead congratulate. Sadly, I don’t think we at Killer Film would endorse Rogen’s character of Ben and his method of getting with Heigl’s character of Alison by boozing her up, but hey, it worked for him, and he grabbed his chance (at first, like all 5′s, reluctantly) and made it work.

I don’t think we have to say much of the mother of all 5′s-who-get-the-girls in Superbad, do we? Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all should-be-forever-virgins, but they get the babes in Emma Stone and Martha MacIsaac. It’s in! Gotta love these guys undying determination to overcome their 5 status. But outside of these overly determined youngsters, a big king of all 5′s is Benjamin Braddock. Sure, a younger Dustin Hoffman was no “McLovin’” but an intelligent nerd, who not only gets seduced by a mature, hot, older woman (and we all know what that means), he’s also caught up in a love triangle between Mrs. Robinson and Elaine, her daughter! Pimp of the Year in 1967, no doubt, huh? The Graduate is a perfect movie, and not only for his average stature that gets or got the ladies, but it makes it a unique film in this discussion.

We still got DJ Qualls in The New Guy, who gets the perfect 10 in Eliza Dushku, the political-minded nerd Mathew who gets Danielle in The Girl Next Door, Euegen Bell in Miss March who is clearly a 5 or less and his ex-girlfriend is now a Playboy Playmate, Bender, the wild child nobody likes, who gets the popular hot girl in Claire at the end in The Breakfast Club, and many more that all prove one thing: when a 5 gets a 10, it can only happen in the movies.

Thoughts on the 5′s and their 10′s? Got a favorite sex comedy that fits this? Comment below!

Men of a certain age: remember when you went to pick up a girl for a date and you had to meet her parents, the father is always really quiet and is either sharpening his knives or cleaning out his guns? The concerned father routine with the curious glare, you know, that old tale? That’s the Killers, only cranked up with a $70 million budget and starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. Now I’m a little older, so I don’t have to meet the father until like date number 10, but I always found that scenario charming in a tired sort of way, but there’s nothing really charming about Killers. It’s a flat, emotionless, by-the-numbers film, that soon becomes a tedious exercise in will power not to be too mean about what you’re seeing.

Jennifer Kornfeldt (Heigl) has just been dumped, so her parents decide to take her to Nice, France to just get away and cut loose. Spencer Aimes (Kutcher) is a top-secret spy who wants a normal life doing normal, routine tasks. They meet, fall in love, he then wants out of the spy gig, but his employer says “no“. He disobeys, marries Jen, and has a happy little existence as a construction supervisor (how did he get that job?). But soon, as he nears his birthday, something seems off. Maybe it’s because unbeknown to him, there’s a $20 million dollar reward on his head, and everyone he has ever known is out to get him. Oh, and he must save his marriage because Jen can’t handle him as a spy.

If you were a little bored reading that synopsis, I feel you, because it was boring writing it. Killers has a stale, leftovers feel to it, and does little to excite or be original. If it isn’t Jen’s (Heigl) odd relationship with her dad (played by Tom Selleck), where she still seeks permission (what is she? 15 or 30?) for everything, to the messy unresolved plot, to the limp climax of a round table discussion between father and son-in-law, it all proves Killers is an effortless bore. Worse yet, is the charm Heigl has brought to films like Knocked Up or The Ugly Truth is absent and the goodwill Kutcher got from Spread is gone, and combined the two have no on-screen chemistry. I’ll just blame the cliched screenplay that took the True Lies type of idea, and numbed it down for the Twitter generation. It’s like being around some of the richest people in the world and you walked in dressed up for a jog. Oh, the looks and glares they would give you. You would have felt like an inch big. That’s the Killers; a film so into itself, it’s not fun being around with, and I don’t like being sneered at.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

Comedy is a genre that is often misunderstood, and when mixed with drama, comedy can be extremely difficult to stomach. Fortunately, Judd Apatow’s keen ability to mix his comedy with reality makes his transition into the dreaded comedy/drama hybrid a smooth one. Apatow’s first two films, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up are perfect examples of the new generation of comedy that mix slapstick with bit of reality. The characters are easy to relate to, they have problems with girls, are awkward, uncomfortable, and extremely ordinary. Funny People takes this a bit further adding death into the mix.

The flick takes a look at the darker side of comedy, and delves into the secret lives of the comedians that live their lives in front of an audience. Adam Sandler dials in the most impressive performance of his career as the troubled comedian, George Simmons, who finds out he has a disease that could have him pushing daises sooner rather than later.

Most people in George’s predicament would turn to their loved ones for solace, but George doesn’t have any real friends, and he doesn’t really get along with his family either. Faced with early retirement George decides to start doing stand up again, and after an unscheduled performance he meets an up-and-coming comic named Ira (Seth Rogen). Soon after their initial meeting George hires Ira as his assistant and to write jokes for him. It doesn’t take long for Ira to realize that he’s basically being paid to be George’s friend.

Of course there wouldn’t be a story if there wasn’t a woman involved, and in this case it’s the one that got away. Leslie Mann is perfect in this role. She is sincere in her love for George, so sincere in fact that she is willing to risk her comfortable family life for a second shot at personal bliss. Only, George Simmons is a leopard that won’t easily change his spots. He struggles with being a celebrity but he’s addicted to the lifestyle. The thought of not being able put himself first is overwhelming.

The entire cast is beyond amazing here. Everyone, including the cameos are more than solid. The visibly thinner Seth Rogen proves he can do more than act like a geeky stoner, but it’s Adam Sandler that shines here.

I have to say that Apatow has really grown as a director. He takes the characters in this film into territory he has never tread. Sure, the dick jokes are plentiful but used contextually. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Apatow, because if Funny People is any indication, it’s going to be bright.

If you haven’t seen this picture already, do so immediately, because Funny People is most definitely a killer film.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

In the dead of winter, there are only a few things people do to keep themselves busy. This would include lots of indoor sex and lots of movie watching. (Don’t pretend you can’t relate) It is also the time everybody everywhere discusses the nominees of the upcoming Academy Awards. In my opinion, the Academy Awards are very over-hyped. Boring and dull movies for which the snobby “Print” Press rave up to be breath-taking and spectacular are always the front runners, while movies the general public watched and loved are lucky to be recognized at The MTV Movie Awards.

Sure, there are always those cool underdog nominees that surprise you year after year like Terrence Howard for Hustle and Flow, Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean, and Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls. Seeing those actors being nominated was incredible, despite the fact that everybody knew that there wasn’t a chance in hell they were taking the beloved Oscar trophy home. (Eddie Murphy must still be kicking himself for Norbit.)

However, when the Academy announced that Robert Downey Jr. had “earned” a supporting actor nomination for his role as Kirk Lazarus, the pompous Aussie method actor who undergoes surgery that darkens his skin so he can play an African-American sergeant, I was flabbergasted.

While majority of filmgoers were stunned over the ‘snubbing’ of The Dark Knight, (something everybody should have expected anyways) I, on the other hand was wondering what the Academy had been smoking to make such a bizarre nomination choice. The world has seen some amazing changes in the past year. Inaugurating the first visible minority President has definitely promoted and encouraged the idea of ‘racial unity.’ How the Academy members had thought that nominating an actor in ‘blackface’ was appropriate is beyond me.

Even if we hadn’t seen any positive changes in the past year, what had made the Academy think that ANYTHING in Tropic Thunder was worthy of a nomination period?

I know the general public had thought Tropic Thunder was the funniest movie of 2008, but just like how I felt about Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, the inner “print snob” in me felt the film was fairly overhyped. Sorry to say, but Tropic Thunder just did not induce the knee-buckling laughter the trailers and my peers made me think it would. The concept was inventive, but all I kept thinking was, ‘Is this supposed to be funny?’ ‘Am I supposed to be laughing and did this movie require such an outlandish budget?’ There were literally parts in the movie when I was laughing uncomfortably because I had no idea of what to think of what I was witnessing onscreen.

Did the world really think the unexpected extended cameo of a potty-mouthed Tom Cruise dancing to that dreaded “Low” song that annoyingly got stuck in people’s heads after all the needless Step Up 2 television spots was all that funny? It just seemed like something that would have been hilarious in 1998 rather than 2008. Not to mention that the film used curse words so excessively that they were making adverbs out of them and a lot of the offensive jokes were something you would have seen way back in a first season episode of South Park.

Sure, Robert Downey Jr. had some funny lines and that “full-retard” speech was classic, but really, most of Robert Downey Jr.’s lines were clichéd and stereotypical. Most of his lines only worked when he was working alongside the young actor who played the rapper turned actor in the film. In my opinion, if anybody was going to “Forrest Gump” their way to an Oscar nomination, that kid deserved it.

Poor Robert Downey Jr. All these years of working hard and choosing worthy roles, hoping for the chance of being nominated again, and all he had to do was talk about eating collard greens and recite lyrics from the theme song of The Jeffersons to get recognized once again? That just makes NO sense to me.

This is why I do not even like watching the Academy awards anymore due to the fact that it’s all about politics. Is Robert Downey Jr. really getting nominated for his performance? No. He’s getting nominated because he was recognized by the media for being a bankable actor once again. (I refuse to use the word ‘comeback’ because I don’t think Robert Downey Jr. ever had has been status)

Think about all the roles Robert Downey Jr. could have been nominated for if he had just chosen to do them after Iron Man. His portrayal of Harry Lockhart in the much overlooked Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or even his portrayal as Tommy, Holly Hunter’s hilarious and eccentric homosexual brother in Home for the Holidays (my personal favourite) could have been noticed. Sh*t, even his performance in Gothika could have gotten a nomination. (Or at least a Golden Globe nomination…lol)

I think Robert Downey Jr. is an amazing actor and he is long overdue for Oscar nomination, but just like Denzel Washington’s nomination and win for Training Day, he is simply being nominated for being likeable rather than being the ‘best’ supporting actor. This is sad because other actors missed out on being nominated. Poor Leonardo Dicaprio can’t even practice his annual graceful losing face this year because of this.

So what do you guys think? Do you think this is a deserved nomination or do you agree that it was a wrong choice? Either way, let’s cross our fingers for a posthumous win for Heath Ledger! He’s the man who truly deserves this award.
