The Film:

Men of a certain age: remember when you went to pick up a girl for a date and you had to meet her parents, the father is always really quiet and is either sharpening his knives or cleaning out his guns? The concerned father routine with the curious glare, you know that old tale? That’s The Killers, only cranked up with a $70 million budget and starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. Now I’m a little older, so I don’t have to meet the father until like date number 10, but I always found that scenario charming in a tired sort of way, but there’s nothing really charming about The Killers. It’s a flat, emotionless, by-the-numbers film, that soon becomes a tedious exercise in will power, challenging you to not leave the theatre.

Jennifer Kornfeldt (Heigl) has just been dumped, so her parents decide to take her to Nice, France to just get away and cut loose. Spencer Aimes (Kutcher) is a top-secret spy who wants a normal life doing normal, routine tasks. They meet, fall in love, he then wants out of the spy gig, but his employer says “no“. He disobeys, marries Jen, and has a happy little existence as a construction supervisor (how did he get that job?). But soon, as he nears his birthday, something seems off. Maybe it’s because unbeknown to him, there’s a $20 million dollar reward on his head, and everyone he has ever known is out to get him. Oh, and he must save his marriage because Jen can’t handle him as a spy.

If you were a little bored reading that synopsis, I feel you, because it was boring writing it. The Killers has a stale, leftovers feel to it, and does little to excite or be original. If it isn’t Jen’s (Heigl) odd relationship with her dad (played by Tom Selleck), where she still seeks permission (what is she? 15 or 30?) for everything, to the messy unresolved plot, to the limp climax of a round table discussion between father and son-in-law, it all proves The Killers is an effortless bore. Worse yet, is the charm Heigl has brought to films like Knocked Up or The Ugly Truth is absent and the goodwill Kutcher got from Spread is gone, and combined the two have no on-screen chemistry. I’ll just blame the cliched screenplay that took the True Lies type of idea, and numbed it down for the Twitter generation. It’s like being around some of the richest people in the world and you walked in dressed up for a jog. Oh, the looks and glares they would give you. You would have felt like an inch big. That’s The Killers; a film so into itself, it’s not fun being with it, and I don’t like being sneered at.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Lionsgate cranks out a swell HD presentation. Contrast, colors, nice blacks, deep details makes the picture near perfect. The DTS audio is a loud track, and only naturally, as it’s an action film, so we get plenty of deep bass, rear speaker activity, and great sound presence.

All extras are in HD.

Killer Chemistry: Behind the Scenes with The Killers Cast/Crew: This is a standard making-of, a little better than a pure EPK, but it has that feel. Chats about the action and working with each other, you know the drill.

Gag Reel that runs a quick minute of typical flubs, Deleted Scenes of no importance, and a couple Alternative Openings, Ending, and Extended Scenes that show not too much, but offers a collective mix of ideas. Uniquely, this disc offers LG-Live enabled apps for your phone and Facebook/Twitter support.

Conclusion: Instantly forgettable and run-of-the-mill action/comedy and a decent HD disc from LGF.

No word yet on who will be directing the picture, but the hunt is on to find a male lead for this chick flick in the making. Producing under Lakeshore is Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi with Steve Golin and Alix Madigan from Anonymous Content. Sidney Kimmel is also part of the producing crowd who additionally co-financed the production.

Principal photography is set for October with no set release date. Heigl is blowing up all sorts of stuff on the big screen alongside Ashton Kutcher in the action comedy Killers, coming out in theaters on June 4th.

The project is under Columbia Pictures as well as Lakeshore Entertainment, with Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg both attached to produce along with Wendy Finerman. There is no director attached to this project at the moment, but the companies are on the hunt for one with Kristen Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz pen the script, adding Liz Brixius onboard to polish up their script.

The world of celebrities is constantly welcoming new members to its’ elite status. There is always a hot young thing creating a buzz. And this week, they’re even younger than usual.

Several celebrities bundled their joy as they announced additions to their respective families.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden welcomed their second child last week. Sparrow James Midnight Madden, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces, made his appearance on Sept. 9.

Sparrow joins the couple’s daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden, who is 20 months old.

And in true celebrity fashion, Richie and Madden took to Twitter to discuss their newest arrival. Madden tweeted, “First day of his life, and my son is already a trending topic on Twitter. That’s right, son, you’re just like your old man. Wait, I’ve never been a trending topic.”

Richie later expressed her gratitude to her fans, tweeting, “What a great day to come back on Twitter. Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I love my family!”

So, what do we think of the name Sparrow? It might be an unusual moniker, but with parents like his, this kid is destined to be cool, savvy?

Grey’s Anatomy star Katherine Heigl and her singer-songwriter husband Josh Kelley added to their family earlier this week as well. The couple adopted a 10-month-old special needs girl from Korea, who arrived stateside Saturday. Their daughter will be named Naleigh, which Heigl explained comes from her mother and sister’s names, Nancy and Leigh.

Of course, Heigl recently got in to the swing of motherhood, throwing a baby shower for Grey’s Anatomy co-star Ellen Pompeo, who announced her pregnancy in April. Chyler Leigh, who playsPompeo’s sister on the show, also gave birth to her third child earlier this summer. And rumors continue to swirl that co-star Eric Dane his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, also are expecting.

There is clearly something in the water at Seattle Grace – that is a lot of McBabies!

Singer (and very recent newlywed) Christina Milian also announced her pregnancy this week. Milian and The-Dream (real name: Terius Hagert Youngdell Nash) wed Sept. 4 at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.

In addition, Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish said last week that they were interested in adopting a 14-month-old Ukrainian toddler named Lev, who John met while doing work for his AIDS foundation. He said, though, that “bureaucratic obstacles” might keep it from happening. And they did. Yuriy Pavlenko, the minister of Family, Youth and Sports in the Ukraine, said that according to Ukrainian law, couples adopting a child must be married, and that country does not recognize gay marriages. In addition, John and Furnish are too old to adopt in the Ukraine, where adoptive parents must be 45 years old or younger.

Oh, and in case you missed it, Tom Brady confirmed this week that wife Gisele Bundchen is pregnant with the couple’s first child, who should arrive in December. Thank you, Tom, for that breaking news.

Things in Hollywood are always hot, but it seems lately that might be due to all the buns in the oven …

The flick is about Abby, a morning show producer played by Katherine Heigl, who for some reason can’t get a man.  She adheres to a list of criteria that she believes the perfect man should have if she is to move forward into a relationship with him.  She’s a control freak that doesn’t understand what it means to throw caution to the wind.

Then her world is turned upside down when her boss decides to hire cock-strong relationship expert Mike (Gerard Butler), the host of a vulgar call in show.  The minute he sets foot into Abby’s life everything changes.  He clues her into to the fact that she really has no idea how to land a guy, even though she’s smoking hot and shouldn’t have trouble in that department.  Meanwhile, as the flick develops the two opposites somehow fall in love, but don’t know how to tell one another.

Both Heigl and Butler dial in strong performances as well as plenty of laughs.  I was extremely surprised by how funny the flick actually is.  I caught myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion, which is not something that usually happens during a romantic comedy.  The film is pretty formulaic but it was a really strong date movie.  My wife and I see a lot of these date movies and usually I don’t enjoy them, but this flick didn’t irritate me at all.

If your looking for a date movie that doesn’t suck I’d definitely recommend The Ugly Truth, it isn’t a bad way to pass two hours.  It wasn’t perfect but it was positively a killer date movie.
