I think one of the things movies do best is to make the unbelievable believable. Even if it’s just for two hours, we’re convinced that things we never thought possible could actually exist. It starts as early as our favorite cartoons; think about the concept of the Toy Story trilogy. But it works. We believe our toys not only talk, but also have a secret life while we’re not watching. As we get older, the same goes for sci-fi adventures and even supernatural/paranormal stories. We come to think that the future in sci-fi films is possible. And there’s a small part of us that wonders if those supernatural/paranormal elements might actually exist.The same could be said for romantic comedies. The whole point of many of them is that the guy and girl who, realistically speaking, shouldn’t be together really do end up together (usually living happily ever after). Sure, they might have to overcome several obstacles, but, in the end, true love prevails. More often than not, it’s a tale of the seemingly unattainable guy (or gal). Think John Hughes’ take on Jake Ryan.

To me, Notting Hill does a fantastic job of making the unbelievable believable. First off, let me be clear. Yes, I recognize the complete cheesiness of it and love it all the more for its blatant chick-flick qualities. Yes, I know it has one of the best/worst lines of movie dialogue ever. And, yes, I know the plotline and outcome are totally implausible in an it-could-happen-but-the-odds-are-infinitesimally-small kind of way. But I found the actions and reactions of Hugh Grant’s William Thacker to be believable.

When Julia Roberts’ Anna Scott walks into William’s bookstore, the two have a hysterically awkward conversation. She buys a book then leaves. William is still a bit awestruck, but he lets it go and continues about his day. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a small handful of celebrities, and my reaction was similar – starstruck for a little while, then it’s a fond memory. When William and Anna literally run into each other later on, he invites her in to his nearby apartment to clean up; again, his reaction is totally plausible to me. That’s what a gentleman would do. Later on, Anna does and says a few things to William that are hurtful. At first, William just keeps coming back for more. That’s a realistic reaction to me; I know I’ve given guys I was interested in more chances that I should. Finally, he reaches a point where he’s had enough and tells her no. Honestly? I think we’ve all been there.

To me, there is something refreshing about characters acting and reacting in a believable way to unbelievable situations. And when it comes to romance, I can always use some extra hope. Even if it comes in the form of a romantic comedy.

Will Julia Roberts be an Evil Queen?

For every that Universal makes for Snow White and The Huntsman, Relativity Media makes in their rival project Brothers Grimm: Snow White. While Charlize Theron has already grabbed the role of the Evil Queen in Universal’s film, Relativity Media has yet to assign an actress to their part. But Vulture now reports that Julia Roberts has begun negotiating for the role in Tarsem Singh’s 3D movie. The director has been wanting to get Roberts for the role for sometime, and it may look as though it will be happening.

Casting update for Snow White and the Huntsman

Universal Pictures and Relativity Media are competing with two projects based on Snow White. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Charlize Theron and Julia Roberts are competing for the same in role, but for different studios. Theron is in negotiations for the role of the Evil Queen in Universal’s Snow White and The Huntsman, with Julia Roberts wanted for the same role, but in Relativity Media’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Originally, Angelina Jolie was wanted for the role, but her busy schedule made it impossible.

Tom Hardy (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) was originally up for the role of The Huntsman (here), but his work on the next Batman film could keep him busy. Michael Fassbender (X-men: First Class, Inglorious Basterds) is now reportedly up for the role.

With the role of the villain now pretty much taken care of, Universal is looking for their actress to portray Snow White. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, The Runaways), Kristen Stewart (Twilight series), and Saoirse Ronan (The City of Ember, The Lovely Bones) were being considered by the studio. However, Universal is now wanting to go with an unknown for the role. The studio is now looking at Riley Keough (The Runaways, Jack & Diane), Felicity Jones (The Tempest, Soulboy), Bella Heathcoat (Neighbors), Alicia Vikander (Beloved). Sources close to production mention that Universal could change their mind about casting an unknown, and could go for big name such as Stewart or Fanning.

Universal will be holding screen-tests within the next few days to determine which actress gets the part. As of right now, production is looking to begin next year for a release in December of 2012.

New images make you Eat Pray Love

Today we get a new set of images, along with the latest poster, for the upcoming novel adaptation entitled Eat Pray Love. The feature, directed by Ryan Murphy, stars Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem, James Franco and Billy Crudup.

While trying to get pregnant, a happily married woman realizes her life needs to go in a different direction, and after a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey.

Eat Pray Love comes out in theaters on August 13th from Plan B Entertainment and Columbia Pictures. Check out all of the new images below from The Movie Insider.:

Riggle climbs on top of Larry Crowne

Well of course not literally, that would be a little odd. However, Rob Riggle is joining up on the cast for the Tom Hanks picture Larry Crowne. The Tom Hanks and Nia Vardalos story centers on a middle-aged man who, after losing his job, decides to reinvent himself by enrolling in college, where he catches the eye of a female professor while bonding with his fellow students (Variety).

Gary Goetzman and Hanks are producing together under the Playtone Productions banner. Riggle is now part of a cast that already includes Hanks, Julia Roberts, Taraji P. Henson and Bryan Cranston. Principal photography is already starting this month in Los Angeles with a 2011 release date from Universal Pictures.

Riggle is making his mark this summer with appearances in not only the Katherine Heigl/Ashton Kutcher action comedy Killers but also in The Other Guys and the Drew Barrymore starring picture Going the Distance.

Cranston dives into Larry Crowne

Bryan Cranston is in final talks to go and be part of the ever-growing cast for Larry Crowne from Universal and Vendrome Pictures. The dramedy is directed by Tom Hanks which also stars him with Julia Roberts. Not only is he putting on those two hats, but he co-wrote the picture with Nia Vardalos and is producing with Gary Goetzman under his Playtone Productions label.

he story centers on the title character (Hanks), who is downsized from his job and decides to start over by enrolling in college. There he forms some unexpected bonds with fellow students while also catching the eye of a professor (Roberts). Cranston is playing Roberts’ husband, a blogger who spends most of his time looking at porn (THR).

Cranston can be seen in the new season of the hit AMC series Breaking Bad on Sundays at 10 PM/9 PM CST.

Eat, Pray, Love Trailer pops up

The Ryan Murphy co-written/directed drama Eat, Pray, Love comes out of the woodworks with a brand new trailer. Starring Julia Roberts, the story is about a happily married woman trying to get pregnant who realizes her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey.

The rest of the cast includes Javier Bardem, James Franco, Billy Crudup and many more. The script is written by Murphy and Jennifer Salt on the book written by Elizabeth Gilbert. Produced by Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner under Pitt’s Plan B banner, the picture comes out under Columbia Pictures on August 13th. Watch the trailer below.:

Universal gets Larry Crowne

Today Universal Pictures is keeping themselves busy, grabbing the domestic distribution for the Tom Hanks directed film Larry Crowne. Hanks not only directs the picture, but he co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos and is starring alongside Julia Roberts. The story is about a man that’s re-inventing his life (THR) and will be starting up principal photography this April in Los Angeles. Producing the picture is Hanks and Gary Goetzman under Playtone along with Vendome Pictures attached to help with financing.

Hanks can next be heard lending his voice to the upcoming Disney/Pixar Animation Studios picture Toy Story 3 which includes Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and others. He also just recently announced that he will be reprising his role as Robert Langdon in the third installment of the Da Vinci Code series entitled The Lost Symbol.

Hanks keeps Julia with Larry Crowne

Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts team up once again, this time with Hanks behind the camera in the upcoming comedy entitled Larry Crowne. Deadline Hollywood reports that Hanks will play the title character, a man forced to reinvent himself and find a new career as he navigates the second act of his life. After the sequel, Angels & Demons, came out into theaters last summer, a lot of speculation started to arise as to what Tom Hanks would be doing next, and here you have it.

Initial filming will commence in April, with Gary Goetzman producing under Playtone. The last time that Tom Hanks jumped into the director’s chair for a feature length film was for That Thing You Do! which was released all the way back in 1996, so this has come as more of a surprise that he’s doing it once again. Roberts will next be seen in the romantic comedy Valentine’s Day while Hanks will be lending his voice once again to the toy Woody in Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Okay, not really, but New Line Cinemas wants us to forget getting into the Holiday Spirit and jump a couple of months to the Hallmark celebration.

Valentine’s Day centers on several intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine’s Day. The cast includes a multiple amount of people like Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, so on and so forth. Roberts is In the Neighborhood

Julia Robert’s production company Red Om Films is attached to start up a novel adaptation of the soon-to-be published book “In the Neighborhood” by Peter Lovenheim. ”In the Neighborhood” starts with Lovenheim’s realization of a lack of community in his suburban hometown. In an effort to get to know his neighbors better, he asks if he can come to their homes for sleepovers. His goal: to facilitate something more than the feeling of strangers living with strangers in modern suburbia (Variety).

Red Om Films was behind a fair number of projects, the most recent release of theirs being “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl”. Julia Roberts is in the middle of fillming “Eat, Pray, Love” which is a book from author Elizabeth Gilbert based off of her own exploration around the world after a painful divorce. “Eat, Pray, Love” is set to be released sometime around 2010.

Gary Marshall of Pretty Woman and Exit to Eden fame returns to the romantic comedy scheme with Valentine’s Day, a comedy taking the He’s Just Not That Into You vein by casting all the A-list stars its budget can handle, with stars Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Hector Elizondo, Jennifer Biel, Jennifer Garner, Emma Roberts, Ann Hathaway, Topher Grace, Jamie Foxx, Eric Dane, Shirley MacLaine, Queen Latifah, George Lopez, Patrick Dempsey, and Taylor Lautner.

Bardem off Wall Street sequel

After months of speculation over Javier Bardem taking the villain role in Oliver Stone‘s forthcoming sequel to Wall Street entitled Money Never Sleeps, it appears the folks over at Forbes have just found out that the Oscar winner is no longer taking the role in the film. No significant reason given as for the actor’s departure, but he is now co-starring with Julia Roberts in Eat,Pray,Love that is set for a mid 2010 release.

Money Never Sleeps is still starring Shia Labeouf and Michael Douglas reprising his Oscar winning role.
