Can a movie about cancer really be funny? That’s the question people have been asking since the marketing campaign for 50/50 started. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, a 27 year old who doesn’t smoke, exorcises and recycles, but gets a rare form of cancer that has grown on his spine. Adam learns this about 5 minutes into the movie, so instead of having the viewer wait around to find out, we learn right away. The rest of the movie is Adam coping with the disease and how those around him react. Adam’s co-worker/friend Kyle (Seth Rogen), who he has known for a long time bring the comic relief. Adam’s girlfriend, Rachel (Bryce Dallas Howard) seems to have a hard time with everything. When Adam first finds out about his cancer, he tells Rachel that if she wants out of the relationship, he understands. He doesn’t want her taking on too much if she can’t handle it. She wants to be there for him, and thus tells him that she’ll stick around.

Adam starts going to a psychiatrist to help him through everything. It wasn’t his own doing, though, as his doctor suggested this. His psychiatrist, Kathrine (Anna Kendrick), is still working on her doctorate ad Adam is her third patient. She tries to help him by doing everything by the book, but Adam just gets more frustrated. Also in Adam’s life are his mother, Diane (Anjelica Huston) and his father, Richard (Serge Houde) who is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. Diane wants to help take care of Adam as well, but he keeps pushing her away. He has an “at arms length” relationship with his mother. He doesn’t like to tell her things (it takes him 2 days to tell her about his cancer) and doesn’t like her helping him out. Kyle is there for his friend, but it’s seen right away that Kyle is using his friend’s sickness to hook up with women. He wants to bring Adam out to bars and clubs and have him tell women he has cancer to get sympathy for him. He doesn’t seem like a great friend, but by the end we see the truth about Kyle. Rachel, who seems great at first, has another side to her.

The marketing for this movie really failed. It made it seem like another Seth Rogen stoner comedy, when in fact it was a drama with elements of comedy within. Joseph Gordon-Levitt gave an amazing performance here and for the whole second half of the movie I was in tears. Seth Rogen played a typical Seth Rogen part, but there’s a good reason for this. The movie was based on the life of Will Reiser, the write, who is friends with Rogen and he was playing himself, while Gordon-Levitt played Reiser. Anjelica Houston was great in her role and both Dallas Howard and Kendrick were fantastic as well. Also, keep a look out for great character actors Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall as cancer patients that Adam meets while going through chemotherapy.

The movie really does something that most movies about cancer seem to forget. Most movies are very cold, while there is a lot of heart here. The directing, from Jonathan Levin (All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, The Wackness), is superb. The scene where Adam first finds out about his cancer was shot so perfectly. The writing is wonderful and the acting is magnificent. Gordon-Levitt caries the movie and proves that he is ready for the big time and that he should be allowed to carry more movies in the future. This is one movie that is a can’t and shouldn’t miss.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis in this new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Will Reiser. 50/50 is the story of a guy’s transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health – drawing its emotional core from Will Reiser’s own experience with cancer and reminding us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

I said some, because it’s known Blake is a tough cop who sides with Commish. Gordon and Batman.

“Yeah, everyone asks me that but I can’t [say],” he says of the constantly quizzing about his character. “The thing is Mr. Nolan is very, very considerate in every aspect of how he tells his stories and I really admire that about him. He’s very measured in exactly when he will reveal the next thing about his stories within the movie and leading up to the movie so I just wait for what he wants his audience to know.”

The film is currently shooting in L.A. for its July 20th, 2012 release.

Yes, folks, the rumor that Robin will appear in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises won’t die.

Nolan has said that Robin would NEVER appear in his films as long as he’s directing, but a new rumor has been posted in the Super Hero Hype forums that put Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Boy Wonder. Accroding to the source, Batman (Christian Bale) will be “retiring” from his duties as the Dark Knight, and that Levitt will don the red and yellow tights as his replacement.

Of course, this should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Nolan has already said many times that he would never use Robin in his films, but the source is claiming the film would only be introducing Robin, and that he’d lead the next film. But we’ve already heard that Nolan’s trilogy ends with The Dark Knight Rises, and that WB is already planning a reboot (here). However, we have heard rumor that Bane would break the Bat in the film (here), but that would be the only clue to making this remotely plausible.

Joe: The Rise of Cobra was entertaining for what it was, the best part about the film (other than Snake Eyes) was Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s role as The Doctor/Cobra Commander. However, we heard not long ago that only three characters will be returning in Jon Chu’s G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes (here), and the Cobra Commander was oddly enough not one of them. While it was a little obvious that Levitt wouldn’t have time to reprise his role while starring in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the Actor confirms in a video interview with Collider he’s not apart of the sequel.

You can check out Levitt’s comments on the sequel at the 3:55 mark.

No word if this means the character will be excluded or just recast, but it seems hard to imagine a G.I. Joe movie without the Cobra Commander. But I guess we’ll find out in August of 2012.

However, Batman On Film has posted something interesting about what characters Levitt could play. The site was hearing that Levitt was either going to be Alberto Falcone OR Black Mask. And since The Holiday Killer has already been dismissed, Black Mask is looking to be the most likely choice. Now, this doesn’t mean he is Black Mask, but BOF has proven reliable in the past. However, history has shown that we should wait for confirmation from WB or Nolan before getting excited.

Black Mask could definitely fit within Nolan’s universe, and would continue the use of the Mob as seen in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. For those who don’t know the comics, Black Mask was born Roman Sionis, and was born into a wealthy family like Bruce Wayne. However, that’s where the similarities end. Sionis’ parents weren’t loving and caring like Wayne’s parents, and cared more about there social status. Sionis eventually became known as The Black Mask after carving a mask from his parent’s coffin. Before he became Black Mask, Sionis had dealings Wayne, who bought out Sionis’ company. Something Nolan could us in this film, if this turns out to be true that is.

Production is looking to begin soon, and we should know Levitt’s role soon, hopefully. Until then, we can continue speculating.

However, Variety is now reporting that Levitt will portray Alberto Falcone AKA The Holiday Killer in the film. Alberto Falcone is the son of Crime Boss Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins). It’s unknown what role the character will play in The Dark Knight Rises, but we can expect him to return, and re-take the criminal underworld after The Joker destroyed it in The Dark Knight. This also confirms Gary Oldman’s claim about the film being tied to Batman Begins (here).

Update: Sources are telling Entertainment Weekly that Levitt won’t be portraying Alberto Falcone after all. It looks like we can resume speculation, but we now hope that he’ll be portraying Black Mask instead.

Filming on The Dark Knight Rises is set to begin very soon, and we get a confirmed answer that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (here) is in the film, after some speculation (here). But as who?

The source is leaning towards Deadshot, a character that is the antithesis of Batman, in which he uses guns to kill – much like the copycats in The Dark Knight. This is the first that the character has been mentioned, as Levitt’s been rumored to play everyone from Alberto Falcone to The Riddler to the Black Mask.

Also, Juno Temple (Atonement, Greenberg) is cast as a “street smart woman” for the film, aiming for its July 2oth release. Interesting. Thoughts?

Joe: The Rise of Cobra (here), casting can now begin. We’ve already heard that Channing Tatum will likely return as Duke and that Lee Byung-hun will return as Storm Shadow (here). But what about the rest of the cast? Sources are telling The Hollywood Reporter that Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be too busy to reprise is role as Cobra Commander as feared. Levitt’s career has broken out since starring in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, and will also be re-teaming with the director for The Dark Knight Rises (here). However, his character wears a mask throughout the film, and that fact could provide Levitt the opportunity to only do the voice work.

Another actor that’s unlikely to return in Sienna Miller as Baroness, and that she will either be recast or written out of the film for new characters. It’s unknown about Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, or the rest of the cast as of right now. Casting is just now getting underway, so hopefully a deal can be made out for Levitt and Miller to return.

As always, the role for which Levitt is up for is being kept under wraps, but Deadline is saying his character will begin shooting when production kicks-off in May. Although, we’ll likely hear numerous rumors about the character soon.

Ironically, Levitt was rumored to be in talks to join the film as The Riddler last year, but was denied by the actor. However, Nolan has already denied the character would appear in the film.

Christopher Nolan can now focus on Batman 3 now that Inception is out of the way. We’ve heard a bit from the director on who won’t be the villain (Mr. Freeze and The Joker), but that’s it. Of course, this leads to the inevitable Internet casting rumors for the film. And while it’s been speculated by fans it’s The Riddler, the folks at First Showing have “proof” he will be Batman’s next adversary.

A “reliable source” laid eyes on a “casting grid” for Batman 3, which lists The Riddler as the villain. Also, that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who was previously rumored to be in discussions for the role) is listed as “interested” on that list. Casting grids are used by studios to keep production studios updated on the projects. The documents are used for business, and don’t account for Internet speculation.

You should note that the script for Batman 3 has yet to be completed. The Riddler could very well figure into the story, but David Goyer and The Nolan Brothers could change it at the last minute. The rumors that Levitt would portray the villain first showed up in June, but were quickly dismissed. Everyone knows that Nolan likes casting the same actors in his films, so Levitt starring in the film could be very likely. Maybe we’ll hear something official on the film later this week at Comic-Con. Until then, you should take this with a grain of salt.

Batman 3 is scheduled to open on July 20, 2012.

The David Koepp film managed to already get Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star. Koepp and John Kamps co-wrote the script centered on a bike messenger (Gordon-Levitt) who picks up a package at Columbia University and subsequently catches the attention of a dirty cop.

Shannon plays the deceptively affable cop with a violent temper. Chung would play Gordon-Levitt’s ex, a fellow daredevil bike messenger who helps him outwit the cop (THR). No word yet on when filming will start.

Chung has appeared in several films as of recent including Dragonball: Evolution and Sorority Row. She’ll be seen once more in the Adam Sandler starring comedy Grown Ups, set to come out in theaters everywhere this June 25th. You can see Michael Shannon on the big screen in Warner Bros Pictures’ Jonah Hex, in theaters now.

And according to Hollywood Life (via The Playlist), Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in early talks to play Edward Nigma.

This is only a rumor since Jonathan and Christopher Nolan are still writing the script, so nothing is certain just yet. However, it was rumored not too long ago that an actor from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Inception would be making an appearance in Batman 3.

The film is two summers away, so this may just turn out to be one of those “wouldn’t it be cool if….” casting rumors. DC Entertainment is supposedly going to make a big announcement about their upcoming projects at Comic-Con this year. I suspect any official news on Batman 3 will be made then.

Batman 3 will open in July 2012.
