Old Dogs

The film is predictable from start to finish. Of course, the wild single guys will find it in their hearts to be dads, like their children really want them to be. Of course, the kids will get them into outrageous situations. Of course, none of this is reality. As I was thinking after the film, maybe this isn’t my comedy, meaning my generation’s type of laughs. Having Seth Green in here is probably the best part, but he appeals to that ever so key demographic: 18-35 year olds. Travolta and Williams appeal to the aging Baby Boomers. It’s an odd mix, but the film tries.

Old Dogs is completely harmless, with comedy is fine for anyone. If you seen the bits in the trailer, like the one with them at the zoo, you can get a good idea of the type of humor Old Dogs is going for. If the screenplay didn’t feel like a first draft, and polished some of the things they gloss over, maybe it could have achieved what it thinks it is. Not everyone is going to like it, because it is too broad, very sitcom-like in terms of plot developments and humor, and Robin Williams’ character quickly changes right after the big bad thing he does. Very typical, and standard issue, and plenty tiresome, if you ask me, and you are.

Old Dogs isn’t out to compete with the Judd Apatow’s or the Wes Anderson’s of the comedy world, and those looking for a quickie family fix will be please, even if the events are forgettable, and they are. The film really feels like a safe, calculated movie that was worked over my studio executives looking at the demographic score cards. If they would’ve aimed it more at the older crowd, who enjoy these actors, as well as, the sitcom style of comedy, I would be hard to discredit Old Dogs. It aims to please too many sectors of the demographic, making many 18-35 year olds, wish they just rented The Hangover again.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a lawyer. Not just any lawyer, but an entertainment lawyer. And in truth, the thought of drafting contracts for venues, negotiating with motion picture associations and settling copyright disputes still fascinates me.

Entertainment law is a unique thing. It ranges from immigration issues to bankruptcy declarations and everywhere in between. In essence, it’s all about providing whatever legal services are needed to those in the entertainment industry. And it seems like lately those legal services are constantly needed.

For example, actor John Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, were in the Bahamas last week as he testified in an extortion trial of paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and attorney Pleasant Bridgewater.

This story begins with the death of the couple’s 16-year-old son, Jett, on Jan. 2. Lightbourne, a medic, had Travolta sign a consent form. Travolta originally wanted Jett taken to a U.S. hospital, and that document, which Travolta previously testified that he signed in the heat of the moment, would have cleared Lightbourne of any liability should Jett not have been taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Grand Bahama.

According to the Associated Press, Travolta says the medic threatened to use the document to “imply that the death of my son was intentional and I was culpable in some way.” He claims that Lightbourne sought $25 million or he would sell stories to media implying that Jett’s death Travolta’s fault.

Lightbourne and Bridgewater have pleaded innocent, and the trial should conclude soon.

Another father with the same name, Jon Gosselin, also went to court last week in the name of his children. He sought a cease-and-desist order for network TLC to stop production on the family’s reality TV show, recently renamed Kate Plus Eight. The order demands that the TLC crew vacate the family’s property. TLC says that filming of the show not directly related to the 5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins is ongoing.

Talk show host David Letterman also dealt with his own extortion plot last week. He admitted, on air, to having affairs with female staffers after CBS News producer Joe Halderman allegedly threatened to reveal the secret if he did not receive $2 million. Halderman is now free on $200,000 bond after pleading not guilty to the blackmail scheme.

Also this week, Michael David Barrett appeared in federal court on Saturday after being arrested Friday night. According to the Associated Press, he is accused of taping surreptitious nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews while she was alone in hotel rooms. He faces federal charges of interstate stalking for taking the videos, trying to sell them to celebrity Web site TMZ and posting the videos online, the FBI said.

Now, if we could only have the cast of The Practice on these cases …

Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) is first of all, a decent thriller, but it’s like you’re getting into the car to head somewhere, anywhere, and putting your car on cruise control. It’s a nice day, your windows are rolled down, and nothing but road ahead of you. You just hope you enjoy the scenery, otherwise it is going to be a monotonous ride. That’s Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. You’re either going to enjoy it for what it is, or it’s going to be a ho-hum ride until the credits.Filmed twice prior, this new version features creditable actors, John Travolta and Denzel Washington, but adds Tony Scott, the man who can’t sit his camera still. While not as motion-sickness inducing as previous movies, his hiring will make or break a lot of you from taking this ride. Personally, Tony has never bothered me as much as some critics. They are mostly irritated at the thought of him, and yes, his visual flair is overtly hyper and doesn’t add much to the final product but useless style. Do I think he hurt this film, really I can’t say he did, but he didn’t add to the film either.

The film hinges itself on the conversations between Ryder (Travolta) and Garber (Washington), and it’s these scenes that elevate the experience. Regardless of if Washington is just walking through performances now or if Travolta has “lost it” as an actor, these guys are, without a question, dependable. When playing a villain, Travolta seems to be snood, giggly, and borderline over-acting, but it’s also borderline scene-chewing, and for that, most audiences that take this ride will enjoy it for that fact. Washington hovers as the good guy in the wrong scenario, but at least he isn’t as bland as in American Gangster. Get these two together, and they will sell your film, not based on name recognition alone, but the fact they can verbally spare with one another. This is where the film excels.

Adding to this is some modern touches, like a Wall Street angle that feels on-the-nose, but brings a reality bite to this 2009 version. Ryder and Garber have back stories that play out like a game of chess in the film. The set-up is good, but finishing it out properly felt rushed. Throughout the film, the police hostage negotiator (John Turturro) tells Garber to deflect Ryder attempts at bringing him down to his level, always play your hand, don’t give in. But the climax, he does, weakening a potential strong finish. I guess, to play Devil’s Advocate, I don’t blame Garber. Oddly written, the cops here, NYC’s finest, are blundering goofs, messing up at every crucial moment. For a movie that feels like it could have been a solid drama, the cops’ involvement make it comical, severing the mood.

The pacing is quick, nothing drags, and while one can bitch of the cocaine-induced visual styles of Scott, or the Swordfish riff Travolta plays with Ryder, and maybe everyone one is coasting here, but the ride is decent enough to take once.
