A remake of My Fair Lady has been in the works for awhile, within the realms of pre-production for awhile that could at times speculate the notion of ‘development hell’. While it might not be that far into despair, the film came back into light again as Keira Knightley denied rumors that she would be taking on the role made popular by Audrey Hepburn. “She is believed to have felt that the project was taking too long to get off the ground,” said The Daily Mail, who in fact broke news of this denial.

Now the rumor mill is fluttering about that An Education star Carey Mulligan could be next to take on the role. Production is slated to start up later on this year with Proof director John Madden helming the feature. My Fair Lady is attached with CBS Films and Toledo Productions, all with Columbia Pictures set up for distribution with no set release date.

For those of you who absolutely adore the Audrey Hepburn 1964 musical My Fair Lady will not like this bit of news. Variety reports that Shakespeare in Love and Proof director John Madden is signing on to helm the Columbia Pictures remake. You can now contemplate whether or not this is something to dread with not just the mere fact that it will be remade but that Keira Knightley has been circling the project like a vulture for awhile to grab the lead role. Then again, the remake could take a step away from the Hepburn feature since it will try to follow the play and novel other than just polishing up the movie.

The film will be produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Duncan Kenworthy with no word on who will be writing up the script.
