Rumor: Summit planning Twilight spin-off

It goes without saying that the Twilight series has been a major investment for Summit Entertainment. The series has brought the studio close to $2 billion so far, and Breaking Dawn is sure to be a hit. However, the series may not be ending, and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner may be heading to the big screen.

What’s Playing informed by an anonymous tipster that Summit Entertainment is looking to continue The Twilight Saga with Stephenie Meyer’s spin-off on Bree Tanner. “It goes without saying Summit want to continue this franchise… Tanner is the one they’re looking at post-Breaking Dawn,” according to the source. Tanner is the character seen briefly in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. She was one of the newborn vampires created by Victoria, who is killed at the end of the book.

Jodelle Ferland portrayed the character in David Slade’s film, but could be re-cast with a bigger name for the spin-off. “It’s too early to talk casting, and everything we’re hearing is just speculation or off a wish list, but I don’t believe they plan on using the original actress, Jodelle Ferland, for the spin-off film. It’s all about numbers and names – you guys know that,” the tipster said. When asked what names that are being mentioned, the source claimed Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) and Elle Fanning, who is the sister of Dakota Fanning. This is only a rumor right now, so take it with a grain of salt.

Twilight Saga to expand beyond the four books and movies?

Stephanie Meyer has originally written four books in the now called Twilight Saga. It seems like the popularity might have caused this short four book series to expand. Look for a new spin-off novella called The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. Meyer on her blog explains the origins of the idea:

“Actually, this has been a surprise to me, too. The reason why it’s a surprise was that I never intended to publish this story as a stand-alone book. I began this story a long time ago—before Twilight was even released. Back then I was just editing Eclipse, and in the thick of my vampire world. I was thinking a lot about the newborns, imagining their side of the story, and one thing led to another. I started writing from Bree’s perspective about those final days, and what it was like to be a newborn.”

The character piqued the interest of David Slade, Eclipse‘s director as he was curious to find out more about the character in Seattle. Jodelle Ferland plays Bree in Eclipse. There’s little info actually on if this novella will get adapted into a film, but with Summit Entertainment making truck loads of cash and the idea of constantly feeding hot properties, we shall soon find out.

Paramount Pictures is finally ready to release Case 39, Christian Alvart’s supernatural thriller that was made before his recent film, Pandorum.

Synopsis: Prompted to rescue ten-year-old Lillith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland) from her parents after allegations of abuse suggest that the child is not safe in her own home, kind-hearted social worker Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger) discovers to her horror that the situation is far deadlier than she ever suspected.
