Can the science in the Source Code really work? I don’t know. I’m sure some searching on Google would find some interesting theories on the subject at hand, but there’s also those other people would are going to claim that the science is hokey. Who cares. Any fear of a sophomore slump for Moon‘s director Duncan Jones is put to rest easily. What feels like a mixture of a Quantum Leap episode from a discarded Philip K. Dick story, is mined for the thread of humanity and for that, despite maybe the grumblings of the pretty cast and the ending, Source Code is just plain great science fiction.

Up-and-coming directors like Duncan Jones get unwillingly caught up in fan boy blankets of love, as if they dictate their career paths. Moon was special. Smart, quiet, and intelligent, all of the things Source Code is, but I understand the distraction that the trailer promised: explosions, the cute cast, studio fare. On its basic level, the film is about relationships. Whether it’s with real people, fathers, digital recreations, one’s self, the Source Code is a haunting look back at life.

I’m purposely not talking about the plot, since I personally feel the trailers show you enough already and that’s the journey of exploration that aids the film. The Source Code feels like a think-tank of some people who give a damn about protecting the values of life in America, that were crushingly deleted on September 11th. Ben Ripley’s script isn’t complex, and that’s the beauty. By streamlining the invention of “The Source Code”, which acts a little like the technology in Minority Report, only helps us ease into this “what if?” scenario. From there, it’s all about the characters and choice. Time is always ticking away. Moments are always lost.

It’s a one-trick pony, this symphony of “The Source Code”, with Jake Gyllenhaal repeating eight minutes to find a bomber and to stop a further attack, is a wonderful exercise in what we are as people in an increasingly Wi-Fi culture. The Source Code is all too pleasing, which is just wonderful. It’s not to be missed.

Apple Trailers have release the first trailer to Duncan Jones’ Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jeffrey Wright, Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan. The film is set for release April 15th of next year.

The film marks Jones’ second feature as director, winning acclaim with Moon last year. With the great job Jones did with Moon, I am actually glad to see he’s sticking with the genre. Source Code is set for release next year on April 15th.

Don’t get too hyped up based on my early praise. The film is rather standard, following Bruckheimer’s own Pirates of the Caribbean films closely, and it all whizzes by in predictable fashion. But the first key to enjoying this film is getting by the non-Middle Eastern actors. Once you can buy the fact that you cannot have no-name Iranian actors as leads in a $150 million budgeted film, following a game Jake Gyllenhaal isn’t all that bad. True, this is the 6th Century in Persia (now Iran), but hey, the Persian King rescues a young, English boy who has a noble heart, so let’s roll with that. Once you do, the rest of the film is pound-for-pound pleasing as any other film of its ilk.

Throughout all of the big special effect sequences, the glue to the film is the fine cast Bruckheimer has rounded up, much like his own Pirates franchise, this is a team effort. Gyllenhaal is fine here; well-toned and lively, but he’s far better when he is verbally sparing with the increasing cute Gemma Arterton, as much of their banter is a greatly played. Of course, Sir Ben Kingsley is walking through this, but that doesn’t stop him from even phoning in a solid performance as the baddie. To the film’s delight, is Alfred Molina as the Sheik Amar. He’s hammy and over-the-top, but he gets the tone of the film and is having fun with it all, like the audience. Have I told you about…yes, you have Molina, but tell us again.

Don’t sweat it if you enjoy it all, even if the plot is loosely fitted together with all of that sword-and-sandal hokum. It’s a jazzed up version of those, as only mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer can deliver in the summer months. It’s entertaining, yet somewhat easily dismissible. It’s everything some people love about popcorn movies and everything other people hate about popcorn movies. After you lick your fingers from the greasy popcorn, did you even consider that the film was adapted from a video game?

Stevens (Gyllenhaal) is part of an experimental government program to investigate a terrorist incident who finds himself in the body of an unknown commuter living and reliving a harrowing train bombing until he can find out who is responsible for it.

Farmiga will play a hands-on communications officer controlling Gyllenhaal as he travels through time and space. Monaghan is a woman on the train with whom the man is involved romantically.

The story centers on a soldier (Gyllenhaal) who is sent to investigate a terrorist incident by implanting himself in a random commuter who was involved in order to find out exactly who did it. The script is written by Billy Ray and Ben Ripley, being produced by Mark Gordon under his company along with Philippe Rousselet and Jordan Wynn producing under Vendome Pictures. The feature is slated to be released on a to be announced 2011 release date under Summit Entertainment.
