The film has gone through several production delayes ever since Darren Aronofsky left the project some time ago. However, Twentieth Century Fox has offically set the film to be released on July 26th, 2012. Many were curious as to why a follow up to X-men Origins: Wolverine was being made after the numerous negative reaction, but luckily, the only competition this film faces is the Dirty Dancing remake.

The Wolverine will see Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine “beginning a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won’t take “no” for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers and Silver Samurai.”.

I bet you never thought you would live to see the day when Hollywood would create Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots the movie did you? Okay, so Shawn Levy’s Real Steel isn’t based upon the property, but that’s how the trailers have made the film look. Well, Real Steel is soo much more than just two robots beating each other to scrap in a boxing ring, its got heart.

The film takes place in the future where robots have replaced humans in the boxing ring. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a former boxer that now works to try and make a living in robot boxing. He finds out he’s got a son Max Kenton (Dakota Goyo) that he doesn’t want. After loosing a match with his latest robot, Charlie and Max head to the junk yard, and find an old robot, Atom. After fixing “him” up, Max and Charlie then find out there’s more to Atom than meets the eye.

So, despite a little wink to the Transformers series, there’s so much more to Real Steel than just shiny robots. In fact, unlike Michael Bay’s Transformers films, this film is filled with emotional moments. When we’re first introduced to Charlie Kenton, he’s desperate to make money off robot boxing, and wants nothing to do with Max. The same can be said for Max as well. However, the two learn to love each other and are brought together by Atom. Of course, this may have been expected from the same guy who madeNight At the Museum not long ago.

While the film’s strength is mainly in its story, the action is another draw. For the most part, the action in Real Steel is rather standard to most boxing films, such as Rocky. However, they’re far from boring. Being a fan of Bay’s Transformers films, I’m no doubtedly interested in seeing two bots slug it out in a boxing ring. But Charlie, Max, and Atom use strategy during their fights, and make it a team effort. Even in a fight that was almost literally described as David vs. Goliath in the film. It doesn’t fall victim to most big problems with VFX films, and doesn’t just make the fights a mess where it’s difficult to tell what’s going on.

Overall, Real Steel does come off as cliched at times, but its heart and soul make it a contender. Its Rocky, but with robots.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Visual

The DTS-HD MA 7.1 lossless soundtrack is simply amazing, and the video quality is great as well.

Special Features

Making of Metal Valley: A cool feature that chronicles the creation of the junk yard of old robots used in the film.

Building the Bots: A look at what goes into creating the bots.

There are also three more features, deleted scenes, bloopers, a DVD copy, and Digital copy of the film in this packed set.

The Film Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Well, Hugh Jackman mentioned to MTV the possibility of doing an R-rated and PG-13 verions of the film. “James Mangold and I talked about [an R-rated version] and we’re like ‘Look, let’s not put it off the table.’ There’s even talk about us doing two versions, as in finding a way to do both while you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans,” he said.

While it would be great to see the violent Wolverine fans love, it likely won’t happen. There have been many times directors have created two versions of a film, but the PG-13 version of the film will be the one to hit theaters. Why? Because it gives the studio more profit. Not to mention the many younger kids that look up to Wolverine (something Jackman mentions in the interview with MTV), and that would mean excluding those fans. And yes, Nolan has shown us with The Dark Knight that a comic book film can be violent and get a PG-13 rating. But if anything, the R-rated version won’t become available until it hits Blu-ray/DVD.

I know, big surprise, right? When it was announced that Christopher McQuarrie’s script would be taking Logan/Wolverine to Japan, everyone assumed it to be the Silver Samurai. Unfortunately, we have no clue as to who could be portraying the character, but wouldn’t it be cool if it turned out be Ken Watanabe (Inception, Batman Begins) portraying the character, but that’s only my hopeful wishes. Hopefully we know more as Comic-con continues.

Filming will begin in October.

Although, many probably already guessed it from the beginning.

You may remember that it was reported that Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class would contain a special cameo by another character (here). Many were guessing that it was Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and it looks like those were correct. The film has been screened, and Dean Piper, columnist for the Sunday Mirror has spoiled that cameo. “Michael Fassbender steals the show. He’s ace. And a very funny cameo from Hugh Jackman”, he posted on his Twitter. This really isn’t that much of a spoiler as we’ve already heard that Wolverine could be featured in the sequel, and we even heard that Jackman was seen on set during production.

The two apparently have a good relationship with each other after working on Real Steel for Dreamworks. It’s unknown if an offer has been made, but it would give Jackman a big film to make while things are getting sorted out on The Wolverine. The film has been without a director since Aronofsky left the project (here), and has yet to sign another director on. Fox is also trying to figure out how to work with Christopher McQuarrie’s script as it’s set in Japan.

However, many fans are worried the studio would try and call up anybody so they could get production moving on schedule. But never fear as Hugh Jackman is saying the studio won’t settle for just anyone. “We’re not going to settle. We’re going to find a director as good as Darren, if not better. Well, as good. Everyone is still pushing forward to getting it done. I can’t be eating too many more chicken breasts,” he said at Cinema Con (via Movieweb). There’s still no word on who’s been tapped to direct the film, and many consider Aronofsky to be an incredible director, and will prove difficult to replace.

Ever since Darren Aronofsky dropped out of directing The Wolverine for Twentieth Century Fox (here), we have yet to know the status of the film. We know the studio is moving forward with the film despite rumors (here). Super Hero Hype was able to interview Hugh Jackman (Logan/Wolverine) Cinema Con, and was able to give us an update on the film. “We need to find another director and once we’ve found that, we’ll be able to know. It’s too early to call on Japan, I’m not sure where they’re at, so now we’re finding another director, but Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we’re moving ahead full steam to find another director,” he said.

The original plan was to shoot in July, and the studio could still be planning on keeping that schedule, but only if they get a director quickly. However, it may be best for the studio not to rush this one. Many were incredibly disappointed with X-men Origins: Wolverine, and we already have Matthew Vaughn’s X-men: First Class coming out this June keep fans satisfied. Also, the film will be set in Japan, and the country is still being trouble by the recent tragic events that took place earlier this month.

The casting call is mostly for Japanese males and female, ages 20-65, who are fluent in both English and Japanese. No word on the names of the characters, but the film will be based off Logan/Wolverine’s time in Japan, so we can likely expect Silver Samurai as the villain. Filming is expected to begin this July in New York and possibly Tokyo, but there’s been no word on that location since the recent disasters in Japan. Although, it could be likely if things improve.

Luckily, he is too, and he talked with LA Times again about the 2012 film.

“I’m really, really pumped about it. I feel like all the planets are finally aligned to make a great movie. We finally have the character and with this mythology — ever since [the 2000 Bryan Singer film] X-Men, when I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics, because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner, ‘Lauren, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this Japanese story, and I think it’s so good. It’s just genius, it’s brilliant.’ And we kind of always talked about it from there on. I sort of even wanted to do that in the third X-Men movie at first, but we thought, no, we really need to establish who he is at first, and we did that [with X-Men Origins: Wolverine], and now this is sort of the cherry on top, to finally do it and have Darren Aronofsky direct it. I love his gung-ho attitude toward it and great vision. Straight off, it’s not a sequel, it’s a stand-alone, and I think we’re going to make one that people will describe as the best of the bunch.”

You all excited for this as Jackman and Aronofsky, or has X-Men Origins: Wolverine still left that sour, and we mean sour taste in your mouth?
