Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides opens on May 20.

The film sees the return of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), with new comers Penelope Cruze and Ian McShane as Blackbeard. The film continues where the At World’s End left off with Sparrow and Barbossa in search of The Fountain of Youth. The film is loosely based of novel On Stranger Tides.

The film sees the return of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Hector Barbossa (Geoffry Rush), and Joshamee Gibbs (Kevin Mcnally) as they search for the Fountain of Youth. They’re pursued on their journey by Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz). The film takes the name of Tim Power’s novel, but is loosely based off it.

While the full details on the plot for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 have yet to be released, we do know it will involve Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), and Black Beard (Ian McShane) competing for the Fountain of Youth. Nothing has been seen on set that confirms that, but What’s Playing has now revealed the opening sequence for the film:

“Film opens at night. Spanish fisherman spots something in the water. A Shape. He fishes out what he soon discovers is the body of an ancient sailor. The boat’s captain rushes over for a look – – before he can make his assessment, the thought-dead sailor’s eyes open. Sailor grabs Captain’s arm… fade out. The Captain and his aide then arrive at the regal residents of King Ferdinand, with said body, who inform the royal that the not-so-dead sailor claims to have sailed on a vessel belonging to the ship of Ponce de Leon, who died 200 years ago. Ferdinand’s first thought is that the sailor has found the legendary Fountain of Youth. He orders ‘The Spaniard’ to hit the seas in search of it.”

This film is reportedly going will be attempting to re-invent the series after the second and third films received heavy criticisms. Production is currently underway in San Juan, and a teaser is expected to debut in front of Tron: Legacy this December.

“Based on the books by Kathryn Lasky, the film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father’s favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd’s jealousy has terrible consequences–causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians of Ga’Hoole–Soren’s only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.”

Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole will open on September 24, 2010.

Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush will be reprising their roles as Jack Sparrow and Barbarossa as they search for the Fountain of Youth.  Ian McShane has been cast as the notorious Blackbeard. Penelope Cruz has signed on to play Blackbeard’s daughter and Sparrow’s love interest, Angelica. Writer Terry Rossio stated the film will use elements from the novel On Stranger Tides, but will not be based on it. Rob Marshall will be directing the film.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will open in 2D and 3D on May 20, 2011.
