Dear John stops Avatar at 7

The Nicholas Sparks novel adaptation of Dear John got enough women’s attention to go to the theaters and drag their poor boyfriends along in order to warrant it the number one spot of the weekend. This is the first weekend out of the eight weeks that Avatar has been out in theaters that it has not claimed the top spot, which comes as a surprise and a relief for all.

The John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers starring action feature From Paris With Love managed to bring in some of the audience, taking in $8.1 Million. Every other film slides it’s way down the list, not really garnering enough attention to really blast away this weekend unlike Avatar and Dear John. Although, we can talk about the Mel Gibson starring film Edge of Darkness and how it continues to struggle to make back it’s $80 Million dollar budget with a total of $29 Million accumulated already within the two week span of it’s release.

One of the surprises of this weekend’s box office is the constant rise of the Scott Cooper directed feature Crazy Heart. The film jumped up on the chart to take in $3.6 Million, which is great considering that it’s taken in $11.1 Million total with it’s $7 Million dollar budget. So the last time John Travolta appeared on the big screen he co-starred in the flop called Old Dogs. Now Travolta looks to redeem himself co-starring along the blue-eyed Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the action flick called From Paris With Love.

A young embassy worker, Richard Stevens (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), and an FBI special agent, Charlie Wax (John Travolta), cross paths while working on a high-risk mission in Paris.

The Lionsgate film is directed by Pierre Morel and will be coming out in theaters on February 5th. Check out the new trailer from Apple below.:

Love, marks the latest film written from Luc Besson who most recently scripted the hit film Taken starring Liam Neeson, and is being directed by Pierre Morel who also directed Taken.
