There isn’t a mathematical equation to figure out the odds of a chance encounter. It’s one of those accidental elements in nature. Most people believe their lives are either decided upon based your own Free Will or that God has a plan for us. But what if they’re one in the same? The Adjustment Bureau is based on a Philip K. Dick short story, which might be one of his more underrated exercises in his continuously explored themes of authoritarian governments, perception, theology, and identity. It’s a paranoid sci-fi thriller, that while Blade Runner is the definitive film adaptation of Philip K. Dick, The Adjustment Bureau is a mesmerizing close second.

I pity people who find love in the typical fashions: a set-up, Internet dating sites, a family recommendation. The chance encounter is one of those anomalies in life that are so unexplainable, so rare, it’s worth living a lifetime to have it just once. You stay late at work one day, or pick up a shift begrudgingly, or take a different route home, these little sparks of compulsive decisions could lead you right into that special someone. But what if your decision making went against your life’s plan? How far will you willingly buck the course predetermined to you? The Adjustment Bureau is a riveting expose of the preciousness of Free Will and the notion that humans are meant for something better.

Surprisingly enough, the film is written and directed by George Nolfi, making his debut. We’ve seen other Philip K. Dick adaptations fail to successfully balance his complex themes in an entertaining way for a movie, but Nolfi wisely allows the actors to carry the sci-fi parable. Matt Damon is the perfect everyman. Emily Blunt is a classic beauty. Combined, they’re the stars of a Hollywood long gone. Picture Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest. This is a Hitchcock type of movie.

But it’s the human element that boosts The Adjustment Bureau from a good movie to a great movie. No matter how wild the premise is, this “pulling the curtain back on Oz”, The Adjustment Bureau has a heart that beats a tune we know all so well. It’s the power of love, as Huey Lewis was a wise man. If we are just puppets dancing for a greater puppeteer, how do we willingly accept their knowing what’s best for us? The Adjustment Bureau is a rarity in sci-fi: it avoids spectacle for thought-provoking chance at showing us what it means to be human.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This is being done because the studio has had more success opening their films over the Thanksgiving than any other holiday. “Disney has had incredible success opening films over the Thanksgiving weekend, and thanks to ‘Tangled,’ we have the top three Thanksgiving openers of all time,” Chuck Viane, president of global distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures said.

Fans aren’t the only happy about the news, The Muppets themselves have “all agreed this comedy is a great fit for the holiday 2011 time frame,” Viane said. The film has an all-star cast of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lady Gaga, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis, Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt. Jason Segelk and Nicholas Stoller wrote the script, and is being directed by James Bobin.

Matt Damon’s upcoming thriller film The Adjustment Bureau has just scored itself two new one-sheets, the US version and the UK version. Not only that, but some new behind the scenes photos have been released as well. The film is based upon a short story by Philip K. Dick “Adjustment Team“, written and directed by George Nolfi (writer of The Bourne Ultimatum screenplay). The film along with Damon also stars Emily Brunt, Terrance Stamp, John Slattery and Anthony Mackie. The film is set for a US release on Match 4th of next year.

Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Matt Damon stars in the thriller The Adjustment Bureau as a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern-day New York. On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David Norris (Damon) meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt)-a woman like none he’s ever known. But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart. David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself-the men of The Adjustment Bureau-who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path…or risk everything to defy Fate and be with her. The Adjustment Bureau is written for the screen and directed by George Nolfi (writer of Ocean’s Twelve, co-writer of The Bourne Ultimatum). It is based on a short story by Philip K. Dick (“Total Recall,” “Minority Report” and “Blade Runner”).

The villain has long been speculated by Favreau to be The Mandarin, which has been hinted at in both films. This isn’t the first time Blunt has been rumored to play the villain for a highly anticipated film. Apparently a lot as always as the trailer for Gulliver’s Travels debuts today on Apple Trailers. Jack Black stars as Guillver in the new take on the classic tale directed by Rob Letterman.

Gulliver (Black) is a big-talking mailroom clerk who, after he’s mistakenly assigned a travel piece on the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of very tiny people. At first enslaved by the diminutive and industrious Liliputians, and later declared their hero, Gulliver comes to learn that it’s how big you are on the inside that counts.

The upcoming film has nifty cast that includes Amanda Peet, Catherine Tate, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, T.J. Miller and Bill Connolly. Gulliver’s Travels washes up in theaters everywhere on December 22nd from Twentieth Century Fox.:

Melissa: Love stories are plentiful within the realms of Hollywood, something that we see year after year in comedic and dramatic forms. Not so often does a true love story of sorts emerge into a film, which is handled like somebody gently descending down a staircase on the new GK Films feature, The Young Victoria.

Jon: The entire film is laced with elegance. From mannerisms, to the strict nature of her position, the film really reflects the order of the Royal Family, through routines and expectations. We’ve seen this before, but by having Julian Fellowes handle the script, it brings a real regal quality to it. It’s a costume drama, but the real heart of it is her political maneuvers, as she deals with her own brevity in politics, while battling greedy, opportunistic politicians.

Melissa: The balance within the film of her political dramas and the too-good-to-be-true love story, barely tango right with each other until it’s third act. That goes hand-in-hand with Prince Albert, played by Rupert Friend, jumping right into the background for some time thanks to the imbalanced dominance of the political story line. The direction from Jean-Marc Vallée was fine, but one of the things that was a little overdone was the focus-crazy cinematographer and the cut-happy editor.

The relationship between Victoria (Emily Blunt) and Albert (Rupert Friend) felt like a shaky landing. It’s rough, and a bit unsuspecting at first, but once it started to get into the groove of it and settled down it flowed fine and became quite natural. Production design and costumes were wonderful, bringing out the most attractive material aspects of the Victorian era out for us all to see.

Jon: I’ll disagree here. The direction is really good, and I have no complaints about the editing. I felt the love story did feel short-changed, but that’s to do with the script, as it tries, and fails to balance the love story, amongst her rise into the role of being a Queen. The third act is the film’s most problematic area, that for sure. I felt director Jean-Marc Vallée crafted a superb, gorgeous looking film. The jest of it is Victoria’s blossoming, long-last love affair with Prince Albert, but it’s the least interesting aspect. Much like Elizabeth, the film is at its best amongst the beautiful costumes and political dialogue.

Melissa: Even though the film is not entirely historically accurate, for attention grabbing reasons, the story still is pretty solid. The whole notion of love at first sight always seems so alien, something that is unobtainable and can only be reached through means of fairy tales, but as the story plays out, it grinds in the sweet reminder that the love they had for each other is real. The sturdy script, enjoyable cast, and sufficient direction bring together one of the more intriguing period pieces within the past decade.

Jon: The Young Victoria is Emily Blunt’s show, and she’s really good. I’ve always enjoyed here, especially in Sunshine Cleaning, but her mannerisms and restraint here, showcase a mature performance, yet one that is warming to follow. Melissa is right. The Young Victoria is one of the more intriguing period films in a while, certainly miles better than Fellowes own Vanity Fair and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Even in an age, where we see the Royal Family as nothing more than a facade to a dying system, produced by Sarah, the Duchess of York, we see love and admire Kings and Queens.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Sony Pictures offers up a superb looking film. Warm colors, sharp details, the production really benefits in HD. The DTS track is quite nice as well, as it never over powers with the music over the dialogue. We’re fully engaged into the story, thanks to this warm, sensual track.

Deleted Scenes: Here’s a huge offering of excised material, offering up some nice moments.

Making of The Young Victoria: Here’s a quick EPK look at the film.

Lavish History: A Look at the Costumes and Locations: I found this piece to be really good. Sarah Powell’s costume work gets a great look, especially since she won an Oscar for it.

The Real Queen Victoria: Short and sweet, we get a brief look at the real Queen Victoria. Yes, we wish this was longer, but it serves its purpose well.

BD-Live MovieIQ is offered and is a decent inclusion. Two featurettes on specific aspects of the production and Trailers finish out the extras.

For further information, re-read Melissa’s interview here with cast and crew of The Young Victoria.

Conclusion: A solid drama with some third act issues, but nonetheless, a solid watch. Sony’s Blu-ray is great.

The Film: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Emily Blunt recently declined a role in Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America, but why? Well, Batman-on-film is reports that an insider says she is set to play Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3:

This dude (who’s pretty damned tuned into the Hollywood grapevine) speculates that one of the reasons Ms. Blunt turned down the role is because she may have her eye set on playing Selina Kyle in BATMAN 3…if Chris Nolan uses the character, of course.

This is just a rumor as of right now. There’s no word if Christopher Nolan will include Catwoman in the film or Selina Kyle for that matter. I don’t like the idea of including Catwoman in the next film. Since I want to see characters that haven’t been used before, I don’t want to see Batman with another love interest. I could definitely see her in the role if its turns out to be true.

Not only is there two more additions to the list to play Steve Rogers/Captain America, but now there’s also a few women that have been tested to be Peggy Carter, the girlfriend and American agent who served with the French Resistance during World War II. Those that Deadline New York are reporting to have already tried out for the role include Keira Knightley, Emily Blunt and Alice Eve from She’s Out of My League.

Then we dive right back into the rumor mill as the list keeps on changing for Steve Rogers/Captain America. Now G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Dear John star Channing Tatum is being considered for the role along with Crash and Stop-Loss actor Ryan Phillippe. The Marvel Enterprises property is still slated to come out on July 22nd, 2011 prior to the inevitable completion of The Avengers film.

February 12th is just around the corner, and this reporter could not be more psyched with the inevitable release of Joe Johnston’s remade version of The Wolfman. Cinema Blend and Universal Pictures release a brand new featurette centering on the whole lore of the wolf man along with showcasing a little bit of the movie monster history that’s under this studio’s belt.

Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

The seemingly never-ending barrage of posters for the February release of Joe Johnston’s directed feature The Wolfman is finally coming to a close. I’ll admit, even though it’s nearly not as completely bad ass as this picture, it still wins the prize for a lot of us as Most Likely To Appear On A DVD/Blu-Ray Cover (and yes I know I’ve said that before). We get a detailed look on the prettiest set of serious faces ever with stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving.

This film is promising enough to be the one to break February out of the dead month, or will at least give a majority of the men (and some women) their sanity back as they sneak away from many screenings of Valentine’s Day, yes they’re released the same weekend, to go and watch this film. The Wolfman will spew out under Universal Pictures in theaters everywhere on February 12th. Go and check it out below from the folks at IMP Awards.:

Anyone else find it funny that the website finally came online on a full moon?

Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman, is lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father, Talbot sets out to find his brother… and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself. Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline has come to investigate.

On the site you can check out a huge gallery of pictures, trailers, features and cool downloads. The film stars Benicio Del Toro along with Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving. The Wolfman is directed by Joe Johnston and claws away into theaters everywhere on February 12th, 2010. Is it February 12th yet?
