A ten year old girl is found brutally murdered outside the small blue-collar city of Rochester, New York, and obsessed police detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and DOLLHOUSE) suffers a mental breakdown while trying to solve the crime. But when the child-killings resume two years later, Megans return to the investigation also brings back her own horrific hallucinations. Even if she can prove a double initial connection to the slayings, will she hang onto her sanity long enough to catch a psychopath? Cary Elwes (SAW), Michael Ironside (STARSHIP TROOPERS), Bill Moseley (THE DEVILS REJECTS), Carl Lumbly (ALIAS) and Academy Award® winner Timothy Hutton co-star in this chilling thriller directed by Rob Schmidt and based on the true story of the murders that shocked America.

Before Warner Bros. Animation can get to their adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns (here), they will be adaptating another one of Frank Miller’s novels, Batman: Year One. Heat Vision has now announced the voice cast for the film that will consist of Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Eliza Dushku as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Bryan Cranston as Lieutenant James Gordon, Katee Sackhoff as Gordon’s love interest Detective Sarah Essen, and Alex Rocco as Carmine Falcone. Batman: Year One will be rated PG-13, and will be debuting at Comic-con in July, but won’t be released onto DVD/Blu-ray until this Fall.

Below you can check out the first images from the film:

The story is very similar to Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins as it follows “a young Bruce Wayne is first starting out as a costumed vigilante. He creates an early bond with Lieutenant James Gordon, whose importance in the tale makes it as much as Gordon’s story as Wayne’s”. However, this adaptation is said to stick very close to the original comic. “The source material is surprisingly cinematic; it’s a pretty straight forward literal retelling. Mazzucchelli’s artwork is beautifully composed and we were able to refer to the comic for about 80 percent of the camera setups”, Bruce Timm said.

TNT is looking at Bird Dog, a new possible series starring Eliza Dushku, for a possible pick up. After Dollhouse got canceled, Dushku is coming back to TV. Begin to drool. Bird Dog is a bit more conventional, compared to her previous TV work in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Tru Calling, and of course, Dollhouse, which all had genre ties.

This series, or pilot for now, focuses on (via CBM) “a mystery fashioned around an unlikely partnership of two cops who happen to be father and daughter. It centers on Gail McGrath (Dushku), who followed in her father’s footsteps in becoming a police officer but had little else in common with him. She left the big city she had grown up in to move to a small Pacific Northwestern town where she was patrolling the streets until her dad, a NYC cop, showed up on her front doorstep to join her as her new partner. Now this father-daughter team, call sign ‘Bird Dog,’ is being put to the test — not only in solving crimes, but with each other.”

I’m down for anything she does, like on my knees awaiting her presence on my TV…in HD.

While I understand that they have worked together numerous times before, I find it more of a wish, than anything of credibility. We’ve been surprised before. Check it:

“I don’t want to kill anyone’s fantasy, but I think he’s working with an unbelievable ensemble cast over there,” she says. “I don’t know, it might distract him from his new project. Maybe some others from his usual actors, but I have not made a call to him about being in The Avengers, no.”

“It’s just like a giant pool of awesome characters. I guess, maybe I shouldn’t throw it out there and jinx it, like what happened with Black Widow. Maybe I talked about it too soon! I think Joss and I have a lifelong connection and friendship and affinity with one another and for one another so I say absolutely, I expect to be in Joss’s world and have him in mind down the road.”

Look for it October 12th on a three-disc set. No extras have been announced, though, but they released the cover art of the canceled Eliza Dushku sci-fi series that sadly, despite fan campaigning and Whendon’s devotion, ended prematurely.

“I would say that we would [be working on something new very soon]! I think we’re going to work on a kick-ass feature together that we’ve been thinking about for a few years.”

Maybe Joss’ long in-development Goners? Look, Dollhouse got canceled but it was a pretty decent show, but Eliza is a solid little action actress and anything in Joss’s hands is golden, unless it gets rewritten (Alien Resurrection). Still, I personally would love to see Eliza back on the big screen. A few months back, word was she was looking to do a live-action version of the video game Wet, but nothing since has come to fruition.

I thought it kicked alot of butt, and was a cross between Final Destination and Jumanji.

Synopsis: In the vein of Final Destination, an international group of young surfers come into possession of an ancient artifact, Mamba, an old board game made from the skin and bones of a witch executed during the Spanish Inquisition. At a drunken party one night, they casually decide to play. Its all fun and games until they find out that curses last forever and death is the ultimate undertow.

With the streak that Joss Whedon has with Fox, it was a dark thought that loomed in our mind the second that Dollhouse first aired, and that was how long is this going to last? Well, Fox finally gave us that answer as they announce that once this current season runs the rest of it’s episodes that the Whedon show will be over with.

“This gives Joss the opportunity to end in a significant way,” the network said in a statement (Variety). This is the part where you question how is this significant. Then again, since Whedon attached his Eliza Dushku starring series with Fox who are better known for prematurely yanking all sorts of shows before they reach their prime.

What do you think? Do you believe that Whedon’s show was wrongfully axed? Or are you part of the group that believes the show was not up to par to begin with? Let us know.

After the very disappointing 1990s for horror, in the early 2000s, horror seemed to be getting back to the much loved roots from the 1970s. Everything was considered a throwback to that time. Some worked, some failed, but if any one of those felt just right, it was Rob Schmidt’s Wrong Turn. Produced by the late great Stan Winston, the aesthetic of the film felt like a unearthed 1970s drive-in film, and even though the film isn’t much more than an inbred kissing cousin to The Hills Have Eyes and Deliverance, it was nonetheless a blast.

The film is just gritty. It starts off with some typical opening murders, and then the credit sequence tells all the back story we need to know about the film’s cannibals. The FX team did such a great job of handling the inbred aspects on the cannibals, so much that prior to the film’s opening, the West Virginian people (and I remember some governor or state representative) were worried that the film would hurt the state’s tourism. Common sense would tell one self that West Virginians aren’t backwood inbred cannibals, but hey, talk about publicity!

Cannibalism is one of the most taboo crimes in human history, but it’s also a great thematic devise. Is there anything more terrifying than inbred cannibals that want to eat you? It’s one of the most primordial deep rooted ideas or urges, and the film really runs with it. It’s the film’s device, and it’s a simple hook, but luckily, we get some solid performances, and decently written characters, along with the gore. Eliza Dushku is delicious, and sorry for that sickening bad pun, but she is. If anything, she’s doing what we all thought Sarah Michelle Gellar would be doing: good films, proving she’s a good actress. Dushku has excelled not only in this, which was at the time, more of a career stepping stone, but look at her in Dollhouse. She’s the poster girl, and it’s her film. She would later re-team with Rob Schmidt for Alphabet Killer (here), so they have a solid relationship and it started here.

Wrong Turn is a bloody romp through the woods. Three-Finger is a crazy villain, a monster that will linger long with you. The film, sadly, didn’t do much at the box office, as Fox chose an early summer date back then in 2003, and it would later be a hit through word-of-mouth and DVD. I remember the screening I attended, where the theater was only packed with about 30 people, but we all sat together. Usually, people will choose to sit away from other people, but this time, we all were scared, so I guess sitting closer to strangers helped with the feeling of terror. I fondly remember after the bonus scene when the credits started, a few women jumped and screamed, quickly leaving the theater. That’s a successful horror film.

**Bonus points for anyone who can find my little write up in Fangoria magazine on Wrong Turn, something I did long before I was a film critic.**

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Sadly, I was pretty underwhelmed by the transfer. It was soft and undefined. Faces have a overly clean look to them, thanks to some digitally removed grain, and this all leaves one dissatisfied with the pic quality. It’s a fine line from if the Blu is better than the DVD. The audio is way better with a solid DTS track. While not the most bombastic track, it’s a nice overall sounding assault.

Commentary: Schmidt is joined with Eliza and (a where is he now) Desmond Harrington. It’s a fun track, that fans of the talent will want to check out for the breezy atmosphere, but don’t expect a thorough step-by-step talk on the film’s production.

All of the extras are ported over from the DVD and are in standard definition.

Making of Wrong Turn: Pure EPK; nothing to it sadly.

Eliza Dushku-Babe in the Woods: Schmidt and Eliza talk about her character, but it’s still fluff.

Fresh Meat-The Wounds of Wrong Turn: This piece has Schmidt talking about the kills and Winston about the how-to’s. Not thorough, but not EPK, either.

Stan Winston featurette: This has Winston talking about his career and his producing role now. It’s a shame that Fox didn’t want to create a new piece, since Stan has since passed, but fans will dig this.

Deleted Scenes and the Trailer round out the extras.

Conclusion: A great throwback horror flick, with great FX and Eliza. The Blu-ray is a bit of a disappointment though, but fans might want to give it a chance.

The Film: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
