As with virtually every film Director James Cameron has made, he pushed technology to another level with Avatar. With the sequels coming up, Cameron will be once again improving technology, but many have wondered just how he will accomplish that. We’ve heard he intends to increase to frame rate of the film last October (here), and now, Cameron has elaborated on that during Cinema Con (via The Hollywood Reporter). “When you author and project a movie at 48 or 60, it becomes a different movie. The 3D shows you a window into reality; the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window. In fact, it is just reality. It is really stunning,” he said.

Cameron notes that he “fully intends” to use this technology for Avatar 2 and 3, and is scheduled to offer a demonstration sometime later today. DreamWorks Animation CEO Katzenberg mentions this will be a “quantum leap” in film-making. Animators usually have to wait days to see their works, but this will allow “be able to see and create their work in real time. I can’t tell you how transformative that will be for our storytelling. … That is an extraordinary and revolutionary change in the process,” Katzenberg said.

They join the voice cast that includes the talents of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Seth Rogen, Dustin Hoffman and James Hong.

The other major release of this weekend is the SNL skit turned feature MacGruber, which is not doing too well for itself given the fact that it’s only accumulated $1.6 Million on Friday. There’s a lot of high guesstimates for Shrek The Final Chapter, ranging from 70 to well over 100 Million for the weekend, but we’ll just have to see about that.

Those of you who’ve already seen Shrek The Final Chapter or MacGruber, what did you think of either one? Also, if you haven’t already, read up on Jon Peters’ review of MacGruber.

With a domestic intake so far of nearly $180 Million, it’s not that much of a surprise that DreamWorks decided to give the okay for this. Continue reading to see what Jeffrey Katzenberg says about the decision (via CS!).:

“2010 is off to a strong start, thanks in large part to the performance of ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ which – having grossed nearly $375 million to date in worldwide box office – has become DreamWorks Animation’s next franchise. We plan to release the sequel theatrically in 2013,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation. “3D continues to have a tremendous impact on the industry at large and we are now looking forward with great anticipation to bringing ‘Shrek Forever After,’ the final chapter in our beloved ‘Shrek’ series and the first in 3D, to audiences across the globe next month.”

How to Train Your Dragon, directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, is still out in theaters and in 3D for all to see. Check your local theater show times if you want to catch another peek of Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and the gang on the big screen while you still can.

The Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois directed picture took in $20 Million, barely flying past the second spot which Kick-Ass remained in with $19.7 Million. With the over-abundance of raves the Matthew Vaugh’s film got, you would have expected a little more bank, but that’s not always the case.

Then we make our way over to the remake sector with the Neil LaBute helmed Death at a Funeral, which definitely took in a nice chunk of change this weekend with $17 Million. Check out the rest of the weekend totals from Box Office Mojo.:

The upcoming Tribeca Film Festival opening feature Shrek Forever After presents to us (via Latino Review) the supposed final poster for the fourth installment in the DreamWorks Animation series. The Mike Mitchell directed animated flick stars the voice talents of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Walt Dohrn, Jon Hamm and Craig Robinson.

A bored and domesticated Shrek pacts with deal-maker Rumpelstiltskin to get back to feeling like a real ogre again, but when he’s duped and sent to a twisted version of Far Far Away — where Rumpelstiltskin is king, ogres are hunted, and he and Fiona have never met — he sets out to restore his world and reclaim his true love.

Shrek Forever After whisks it’s way into theaters on May 21rst. Now go and look at the pun-filled poster below.:

With the recognizable cast and fairly good word-of-mouth, it’s not that much of a surprise that the Twentieth Century Fox film got the top spot. Finishing in a close second is the action-packed Clash of the Titans with $26.8 Million, not too big of a drop for it’s second week considering that Date Night was the only big release of this weekend.

DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon managed to stay strong with $25.3 Million, again not much of a surprise considering it’s the only real animated kids movie out there for families to still flock to. Speaking of family-friendly films, the novel adapted feature Diary of a Wimpy Kid is still holding out a little bit as it takes $4 Million, making it’s grand total domestically of $53.7 Million (in contrast to it’s mere $15 Million dollar budget).

The very positive word of mouth finally paid off for the MGM comedy Hot Tub Time Machine as it’s intake of $5.4 Million, managing to make the Steve Pink directed flick hit the $36 Million mark (which is the same cost as the budget). Check out the rest of the top ten box office below from Box Office Mojo.:

Weekend Box Office (April 9-11)

Date Night ($27.1 M)

Clash of the Titans ($26.8 M)

How to Train Your Dragon ($25.3 M)

Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too? ($11 M)

The Last Song ($10 M)

Alice in Wonderland ($5.6 M)

Hot Tub Time Machine ($5.4 M)

The Bounty Hunter ($4.3 M)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid ($4.1 M)

Letters to God ($1.1 M)

April is stringing it’s way out of the dull winter months to bring us all sorts of mind-numbing action. Speaking of that, the biggest release of this upcoming weekend is the highly anticipated comic book adapted feature Kick-Ass. The other wide release this Friday is Death at a Funeral with limited releases of The Joneses, The City of Your Final Destination, Exit Through the Gift Shop, The Secret in Their Eyes and The Perfect Game.
