TNT is looking at Bird Dog, a new possible series starring Eliza Dushku, for a possible pick up. After Dollhouse got canceled, Dushku is coming back to TV. Begin to drool. Bird Dog is a bit more conventional, compared to her previous TV work in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Tru Calling, and of course, Dollhouse, which all had genre ties.

This series, or pilot for now, focuses on (via CBM) “a mystery fashioned around an unlikely partnership of two cops who happen to be father and daughter. It centers on Gail McGrath (Dushku), who followed in her father’s footsteps in becoming a police officer but had little else in common with him. She left the big city she had grown up in to move to a small Pacific Northwestern town where she was patrolling the streets until her dad, a NYC cop, showed up on her front doorstep to join her as her new partner. Now this father-daughter team, call sign ‘Bird Dog,’ is being put to the test — not only in solving crimes, but with each other.”

I’m down for anything she does, like on my knees awaiting her presence on my TV…in HD.

Luckily, the rowdy fan base’s efforts showed Universal that there was enough market left in the sci-fi western to give us Serenity.

Don’t expect the same sort of effort in resurrecting Dollhouse, fans. In a recent interview, Joss Whedon revealed what really killed off Dollhouse, who was granted a second season under special consideration, only to see it canceled before the end of the approved episode count. “Obviously, decoupaging is too racy for Fox. So, I mean, they couldn’t allow that. It’s just Standards and Practices, they draw the line at this kind of thing.”

Yes. You heard that right. Apparently, Whedonverse and crocheting have had numerous intersecting meetings. Also, the news has been slow this week.

What seemed like one of many April Fool’s Day hoaxes sort of got confirmed the other day in the LA Times: “After some checking, insiders at Marvel Studios say no director has been signed yet but that Whedon was on the short-list and conversations took place. This could be promising, Whedonites.”

It has also been rumored that Louis Leterrier (Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans) was also a front-runner for the job. Don’t forget about Iron Man 2‘s Jon Favreau. Comic book fans, especially Marvel ones, should remember his work on the Astonishing X-Men, so we know he can handle team adventures. Handing a group of actors, mostly all A-list Hollywood ones, shouldn’t be an issue either for the man that worked on television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, all who used an assemble cast.

I expect with Captain America and Thor ready for shooting, The Avengers is next on Marvel’s lips.

“I would say that we would [be working on something new very soon]! I think we’re going to work on a kick-ass feature together that we’ve been thinking about for a few years.”

Maybe Joss’ long in-development Goners? Look, Dollhouse got canceled but it was a pretty decent show, but Eliza is a solid little action actress and anything in Joss’s hands is golden, unless it gets rewritten (Alien Resurrection). Still, I personally would love to see Eliza back on the big screen. A few months back, word was she was looking to do a live-action version of the video game Wet, but nothing since has come to fruition.

Joss Whedon is nearly a god for those who admire his work, whether it would be from Buffy to Firefly all the way down to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. His latest Fox show, Dollhouse, is coming up on it’s final episode much to the dismay of some fans. Luckily for the people at E! Online, they were able to get ahold of the creative guy from these past couple of decades and ask him a few questions pertaining to Glee, Doctor Horrible and what’s next on his plate.:

More Horrible: So what about that long-awaited sequel to Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog? “Sadly, my collaborators don’t have more time on their hands,” Joss teases, with a shrug. “They all have other jobs, which I think is both rude and disgusting.” (He’s kidding.)

“We very much want to do it. We meet, we hammer out stuff, we have songs, we have ideas, we’re really working it, but it’s a slow-moving train. We’re very passionate about it, and Neil’s been great,” says Joss. And as mentioned above, “He’s always checking in before he takes a gig.”

Gleegasm: But what about reports that Joss and NPH could reunite on Glee? As you know, Joss Whedon is set to direct an episode of Fox’s hit musical series later this season, and rumor has it that show producers want Harris to guest star in that very episode. Is that really happening?

“That’s something that’s trying to be worked out, but I haven’t heard whether or not that’s going to take place. I hope so, that’d be great, [but] I don’t know anything about it. I’m just a director on hire for that,” Joss says about his plans for helming an episode of Glee this March. “I’m a huge fan, [so] I’m going to show up and hopefully put the cameras somewhere useful.”

“I’m going to try to not stalk anyone. That’s going to be my big ambition,” he jokes. “I practiced on Jamie Bamber, and I didn’t stalk him for eight days on that episode of Dollhouse. I think I can rock it. I think I’ll be OK.”

What’s Next? Glee gig aside, Joss asks that fans please bear with him while he figures out his next move. “I do hope to create something in this calendar year, as well as do jobs for other people, but I haven’t investigated anything besides Glee,” which he explains is a huge passion project for him. “That’ll actually take a chunk of time. It means a lot to me—I really want to get it right. So that’ll eat up the better part of a month, intellectually, so I’m holding out for a Joss Whedon joint.”

Maybe one of these days Whedon can wrangle up the cast again to make the beloved Act IV of Dr. Horrible, but for all we know it could end up being another Evil Dead IV, meaning that it will never get made. The series finale of Dollhouse airs on Fox on Friday, January 29th at 8 PM PST.

With the streak that Joss Whedon has with Fox, it was a dark thought that loomed in our mind the second that Dollhouse first aired, and that was how long is this going to last? Well, Fox finally gave us that answer as they announce that once this current season runs the rest of it’s episodes that the Whedon show will be over with.

“This gives Joss the opportunity to end in a significant way,” the network said in a statement (Variety). This is the part where you question how is this significant. Then again, since Whedon attached his Eliza Dushku starring series with Fox who are better known for prematurely yanking all sorts of shows before they reach their prime.

What do you think? Do you believe that Whedon’s show was wrongfully axed? Or are you part of the group that believes the show was not up to par to begin with? Let us know.

Reviews have been mixed for the game so far, but it would feature Dushku in a leather outfit, so…..sorry, I was drooling there. Here’s what she said:

“This video game Wet I just did, she’s got a working class Lara Croft thing going on, and she’s pretty kick ass. She travels the globe, she’s in Hong Kong and she’s in the UK and she’s a gun for hire and she’s got two samurai swords. She’s pretty vicious. So that’s been something that maybe could turn into a live-action Dushku vehicle.”

Dushku refered to herself in third person? God, I love that girl. I hope Dollhouse gets picked up for a thrid season, but she does have a production company, so she just might carry some weight to get this thing into theaters.

The unfortunate side of business in the land of TV, is that you must find your voice and your audience in a hurry, otherwise, you’re canceled. TV doesn’t allow shows to grow, to find its voice, and importantly, an audience. Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon are no strangers to this ultimatum, with both Tru Calling and Firefly, cut all too soon, before they could accomplish the prerequisites for renewal. Teaming together for Dollhouse, they were facing the same thing, albeit one key difference: it has a voice, but where are the viewers?

Dollhouse is an original, fresh, intelligent sci-fi/action show, and it states that from episode one. I think all of Whedon’s TV series, start off meandering to collect its mythology, its voice, its footing, but Dollhouse, while exploring what it can do in the first few episodes, it finds itself faster than his past shows. I think the so-called “starting off slow” here with Dollhouse helps the later episodes. The first few episodes do feature that “a scenario of the week” feeling, but by the time episodes 4 and 5 hit, these early episodes aid the future ones, since we know what the Dolls do when they are active. It’s background knowledge that helps in creating depth.

Probably one of Dollhouse‘s problems in finding an audience, is that the show is an amalgamation of a variety of ideas, much like the Dolls themselves, that made advertising it so hard. It defiantly has ties in action/adventure, but it’s also a sly sci-fi tale, mixed with a crime drama. Think Alias mixed with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, with sprinkles of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. That’s not right, but you get my vibe I was going for. Personally, this mix, this amalgamation, will only help Dollhouse in separating itself from other shows on TV. Once you catch on, you’ll be hooked.

Eliza Dushku is the series’ lead, and she has never been more gorgeous. Seemingly in every episode, the plot calls for her to be in a variety of skimpy outfits. But more importantly than her sex appeal, her character of Echo is her most complex role yet. Each episode, she gets programed to be someone else, or new. This allows her to stretch her acting skills to the max, but it could be a double edge sword. She could fail or succeed, and Dollhouse hinges on that. Luckily, she succeeds. In between her sessions, Echo is a blank slate, as the Dolls are, when off of assignments. She has to be childlike, a hard experience to represent, but again, she succeeds.

Much like all of the Whedon TV series, the series isn’t complete without a solid group of supporting characters, while being perfectly cast. Dollhouse is no different. Journey man Harry Lennix pleases in the show as Echo’s watcher so-to-speak, called a “handler”. He’s smart and stoic, but there’s that humbling father figure presence to him. Tahmoh Penikett as Paul Ballard, a FBI agent on the hunt for this Dollhouse, is spectacular. He unknowingly descends into a rabbit hole, and the twists and turns his character takes, aids the series, as a backbone. Angel fans will rejoice at seeing Amy Acker, the Dollhouse’s resident doctor, with her face scarred from a rogue Active named Alpha. Joss Whedon has an incredible knack for assembling a solid team of actors that, even with the great writing, add depth in subtle ways to their characters. Women are strong and engaging, a Whedon quality, as nobody in TV writes women better than him. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer tackled the stereotypes of the strong woman versus the damsel-in-distress, in a fun angle, in Dollhouse, Whedon tackles the cliches head-on. The nature of the Dolls and their jobs call for some interesting subtext, and Whedon handles it beautifully.

I’ve been purposely vague about what is Dollhouse. I want to keep it that way. Like FBI Agent Ballard, the descent into this bizarre labyrinth works with no knowledge of what everything is. Again, I think this is why an audience hasn’t flocked to it yet. If time is on Dollhouse‘s side, and so far it is, Team Whedon will deliver a great show, as Season One is suggesting. The show subtlety adds some social satire about the nature of perfection and beauty, with great drama and action. It’s deeply rewarding to find a show this unique and fresh. Dollhouse also displays a solid theatrical-like quality to the show, making the scale larger than most TV shows. So where’s the audience? A beautiful lead in Eliza, who is displaying some of her best acting work, a clever and original premise, by Joss freakin’ Whedon. C’mon, discover this show so we can see Echo’s full five year arc.

The Blu Ray:

Audio/Video: As I mentioned earlier, the show feels theatrical, and this has to be one of the best looking, and sounding TV shows I’ve seen on Blu Ray. The slick production feels alive with solid blacks levels, vivid colors, and near no source imperfections. If only other studios handle their TV series like Fox did here. The show sounds amazing. The bass is thicker than I expected, making for some serious thumping, and the directional effects are highly active. You’ll be hard pressed to believe this is a sound design for a TV show. Great job, Fox.

Commentaries: “Ghosts”, “Man on the Street” feature Joss Whedon and Eliza, and are some of the better Whedonverse commentaries I’ve heard. Funny, charming, informative, they are a good listen for fans of the series. “Epitaph One”, an unaired 13th episode gets a track from Jed Whedon, Joss’s bro, and his wife Maurissa Tancharoen, offer some dry wit, and a slightly less engaging track.

Original Unaired Pilot: Echo: Joss Whedon’s pilot failed to impress the studio, making for a new one, which the series eventually started off with, but as a great bonus, we get “Echo”, the intended pilot. It’s pretty different, working on in hindsight as an alternative universe start. This episode is really worth a look.

Epitaph One: The unaired 13th episode is a doozy. I really won’t divulge into anything spoilerish, but it picks up 10 years after episode 12, radically adding foreshadowing and a direction to where the series is going too. It’s one of those one-off episodes Whedon does like in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in Angel, that have strands in the mythology, but are well-crafted single stories. Highly recommended viewing.

Making Dollhouse: In HD, and running 20 minutes, we get some actual good material here. Interviews, table reads, on-set footage, and kind of candid take of the original pilot issues. For those expecting a typical EPK junk, this isn’t that. If only more TV shows had better making-ofs, so again good job Fox.

Deleted Scenes: Short and disposable, these do hold a few interesting bits that tie up loose ends.

Coming Home: This short piece illuminates the team working with Whedon again, as does Finding Echo, that has Eliza and Joss discussing their past collaborations.

Designing the Perfect Dollhouse: Runs 5 minutes, and talks about the set construction.

A Private Engagement: This is short and kind of amusing, featuring interviews with the cast about the aspects of various plot threads and ideas.

Conclusion: Whedon is back on TV, with a fresh, original idea, worth seeking. If you stick with it after episode four, you’ll be hooked-guaranteed.

The Show: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu Ray: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Welcome back to Killer Film’s New Release Tuesday for July 28th! Before we get started, we free to click on the cover art to order from Amazon!

Fast & Furious

The re-teaming of the original cast proved to work as the film opened in April with a weekend box office intake of $70 million. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I say go rent or buy it to support Killer Film’s friend Mousa Kraish! Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Buy Donny says: Rent

Green Lantern: First Flight

With the casting of Ryan Reynolds for the live action version, I’m sure DC and Warner are going to go crazy with promoting all things Green Lantern. Regardless, DC/WB animated films have been really strong with great stories and animation, and this looks to be no different. Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

Dollhouse: Season 1

I love Eliza Dushku. I love Joss Whedon. While Tru Calling didn’t work out as it should have for Eliza, and the same thing for Firefly for Whedon, luckily for both, Fox aka the killer of potentially great shows have blessed Dollhouse for a second season. Starts off slow but ends great. I can’t wait! Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Buy Donny says: Rent

Dragonball: Evolution

Not atrocious, but it did feel too “insider” for my tastes, like you needed to know Dragonball Z inside and out to enjoy the film. Kids should love it. Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Miss March

I have no clue who the Whitest Kids You Know are or care. Apparently, neither did many others since it came and went. Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Avoid Donny says: Rent

Repulsion: Criterion Collection

The Roman Polanski classic is given a great treatment by Criterion. Awesome! Also on Blu Ray. Jon says: Buy Donny says:Buy

Sita Sings the Blues

Killer Film missed out on this flick, a personal film by a female filmmaker in the tradition of Persepolis. Looked amazing! Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

While a little over a month away, the hugely successful Comic Con has already slowly been leaking news as to who will be in attendance, and what we may expect to see. Of course many of the schedulings are subject to change.

So far what we know is:

All memberships have already been sold out for only the second time in the Con’s history.

Though no official word has come there may be a massive push for James Cameron’s Avatar as well as the man himself making an appearance (and hopefully showcasing the first footage from the film).

Sherlock Holmes and Jonah Hex are set to make an appearance at the Warner Bros. exhibit.

Disney will showcase Jerry Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia which may include the films first trailer.

Richard Kelly‘s followup to his divise Southland Tales, The Box will be showcased along with the films main stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden. MYSPACE

No date given but Zack Snyder will be in attendance to showcase a Blu Ray Live screening of Watchmen.

The upcoming apocalyptic thriller from the guys behind Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow will show 2012 for Sony Pictures.

Peter Jackson will be in attendance to help promote District 9, the alien invasion film he helped produce. NY TIMES

Television shows in attendance for the con: Dollhouse,Mythbusters,Chuck,Fringe,Caprica,Flash Forward, V remake,Eastwick, Past Life, and Human Target ZAP2IT

The complete series of G.I Joe and Transformers will be available for sale at the con. TVONDVD

While this is a RUMOUR a this point but word is that James McTeigue’s Ninja Assasin will have its first screening at the fest.

While Heroes is an annual mainstay at the con since 2006 this year the popular television show will NOT appear. CHICAGO TRIBUNE

THe CW will showcase The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Smallville at this years fest. WPIX

Clive Barker will be in attendance for a screening of A Book Of Blood. EXAMINER

The entire cast of the fantastic series True Blood will be in attendance along with series creator Alan Ball for recap of Season one and to promote the Season 2 which debuted last week. EXAMINER

The first real footage from Kate Beckinsale‘s anticipated horror film Whiteout will showcase during the fest as well. LA TIMES

And last but not least for the ladies out there the cast of New Moon is also scheduled to appear, though main star Robert Pattinson is still debatable as he is currently filming another film at the day of the fest. LA TIMES

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard have officially nabbed the Visitor star Richard Jenkins and are in negotiations to nab Bradley Whitford to star in their upcoming horror film The Cabin In The Woods. The film is currently shrouded in secrecy with no plot details revealed other than the 2 actors having to return to the cabin due to a connection that the two share. Personally I could not be more excited to see this film. It is always refreshing to have adults and not teens in a horror film as the plot and performances are usually more realistic. The film will be Drew Goddard’s first projects since scripting the hit film Cloverfield and Whedon currently has the Fox series Dollhouse awaiting release.
