However, it seems that a prequel is in the works, but in comic book form. DC Comics announced today they’ll be expanding the Watchmen universe with a series of prequel novels titled Before Watchmen will be coming this Summer. Obviously, the mere thought of tampering with the universe Alan Moore created is a controversial one amongst fans, but the with the likes of Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo, Amanda Conner, Darwyn Cooke, and many more names makes this sound promising.

However, the main concern that many will probably notice is the Moore’s original novel gave enough backstory on the characters that a prequel seems rather pointless other than money. The biggest question is whether or not a movie will follow?

The Wonder Woman reboot was dumped by NBC, and word is that a live-action series about Raven is planned (here). However, nothing has been heard about that show since.

Well, IGN was able to speak with CW’s new president, Mark Pedowitz about bringing more DC characters to life. “We are looking next year to do superheroes if the right superhero comes to be. Having Warner Bros. as one of our partner companies and them having DC Comics makes it very intriguing to find the right superhero to go there,” he said. That doesn’t say much of anything, but it’s good to know that we could be getting something in the not too distant future.

Today marks the opening of Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, and the film has already been getting blasted by critics (and you can read Jon’s and my take here and here). We’ve all know the big risk the studio is taking with the film, and with a sequel already in the works, many would think there’s nothing to worry about. But with a $300 million budget, and numerous bad reviews, things aren’t looking good. Hopefully, everything works out as WB is apparently basing DC’s film future off Green Lantern.

In an article posted by Varitey, they mention the studio is using Martin Campbell’s film a sort of a test-pilot for the DC’s properties, and that future projects will reside on the film’s failure. “Green Lantern is being used as a test case as WB strives to get more of its comic book characters — which also include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash — into theaters,” they posted. It’s rather safe to assume that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises will be a big success, and the planned reboot (here) will most likely get off the ground. That franchise, along with Superman, has already proven to draw an audience, but what about Justice League (here), Wonder Woman, The Flash, and many other properties? If Green Lantern fails, then we could likley see plans for those films getting scrapped as we just saw with the recent attempt to reboot Wonder Woman on TV. Marvel has already proven to have success with their properties, but this would be the first time we see any property from DC, excluding Batman and Superman.

Of course, the film just opened today, and we really won’t get an idea about the film’s performance until the weekend results are in. Fans of the comic will likely flock to theaters to see Green Lantern on the big screen for the first time, but what about the average moviegoers? “Fanboys are a very vocal minority but represent a very small percentage of the moviegoing population. It’s very hard when you’re creating a film that’s intended for mass audiences. It’s very hard to keep fans happy. Fans will always have issues with what’s being done to the source material. But there’s a much bigger purpose for this property. It’s a good primer for the future and lays the groundwork for the future of the franchise,” WB Marketing Chief Sue Kroll said about pleasing everyone.

Hopefully, the film won’t take as big of a beating at the box-office as the critics have been giving it, and we can look forward to more DC films in the future.

At least for live-action. Luckily, we’re getting a different hero June 17th in The Green Lantern, but with no Wonder Woman TV series (here), what’s next for Warner Bros. and their long-time partner, DC Comics? With murmurs of a Flash film (here), and of course a new Superman film, that highly anticipated third Nolan Batman film, and a possible Green Lantern 2, let’s throw a Hawkman movie into the mix.

At least that’s what BadAssDigest thinks, due to a site called It’s on the Grid, which tracks newly emerging productions. so it looks like writers are being sought out, but can WB make a successful and interesting Hawkman movie?

If Marvel can with Thor, why not?

We’ve already heard that Snyder is possibly looking to cast a middle-aged version of Superman (here), and that Brandon Routh will be given another shot at the role (here). However, the studio may want our next Man of Steel to have some “True Blood”.

According to True Blood.net, Joe Manganiello (True Blood) revealed that he’s possibly speaking with Warner Bros. about starring as Clark Kent/Superman. He later clarified his statements on his Twitter account. “Just to be clear… as of today, I am not “negotiating” to play SuperMan …but keep your fingers crossed and thanks for the wishful thinking!”, he posted. It’s unclear if he meant the rumors all false or if he’s yet to even meet with the studio. It’s very likely that he’s still on the shortlist of actors for the role, but has yet to get an offer.

Manganiello would definitely fit within the age range that Snyder is rumored to be looking for, but most fans are still leaning towards Jon Hamm (Mad Men) for the role. Manganiello isn’t very well-known, but is mostly known for his role on HBO’s hit show, True Blood, as the werewolf Alcide Herveaux. But may be going with an unknown is the best way to go. After all, Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh weren’t before playing Superman, both of whom have formed a huge fan-base since. With production on The Man of Steel scheduled after Snyder finishing Sucker Punch in March, we should know soon who he and the studio is looking for.

It’s risky when adapting comics to the big screen as many of the fans want to see the film stay true to the comics. Many of the previous superhero films have seen a lot backlash from the fanboys for making certain changes to their favorite character, even Christopher Nolan faced some of this with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Director Zack Snyder has already mentioned that his Superman reboot won’t follow any story from the comics (here), and has gotten some fans worried.

According to Digital Spy, that David Goyer’s script is different from previous incarnations, but stay true to the character fans love. “It’s a different story. I won’t say there’s a break from the canon or anything like that, but there is definitely an approach that makes you go, ‘Okay, that’s a way to get at it,”he said. Of course, what fans really are curious about it where the story will be headed, right? Many were worried when news broke that Goyer’s script was being rushed, and turned out to be a mess (here). However, Snyder reassures us that “David is very respectful of the canon and stuff like that. It has its roots in the canon and again, like I say, it has a point of view about who he is,” he said.

Like Christopher Nolan, Snyder is keeping details about the film secret. “I’m being cryptic, I know, but it’s the best I can do,” he said. He has previously stated the film will be somewhat like Nolan’s Batman Begins, and portray Kal-el’s early days as Superman, but now isn’t sure where the story will go. “I think it’s early to say. I don’t know,” he said. Recent news that Snyder is looking to cast a middle-aged Superman (here) would seem to confirm that, but Snyder now claims that “the Internet has no idea what’s going on”. However, with production looking to begin after the release of Sucker Punch next March, we should know more about the film soon.

The Man of Steel is scheduled to open December of 2012.

We’ve heard that Tom Hardy has been cast in the film (here) possibly as the villain, but it’s been questioned about who those actresses that are reportedly meeting with Nolan for a part in the film (here). It’s been assumed those actresses will be meeting for the role of a villainess, and it’s speculated the often rumored Catwoman is the part they’re competing for (here).

However, it may not be a villain. An insider told Batman On Film the two roles could possibly be that of Detective Sarah Essen and Julie Madison. In Batman: Year One, Essen is a detective that starts an affair with Commissioner Gordon. The character could definitely be featured as a member of Gordon’s (Gary Oldman) unit that hunts Batman, but you probably shouldn’t be expecting to see the love story between the two played out in the film. According to the source, that role could be a supporting role.

With Rachel Dawes out of the picture, Nolan could very well bring a new love interest for Bruce Wayne. Catwoman has been known for that role, but one of the reasons Nolan dropped The Riddler was because everyone assumed the character would be most obvious. The same could be done for Catwoman, but Julie Madison has been another character that has been a romantically tied to Bruce Wayne, and was engaged to him during a point in the comics. However, two are only POSSIBLE characters, and could possibly be mentioned to keep fans speculating. However, the actresses in question range from big names to unknowns.

The Dark Knight Rises opens in July of 2012.

No doubt the biggest news today was that Nolan finally revealed the title of his next Batman film (here). With that news Nolan revealed that he wouldn’t be filming, nor post-converting the film in 3D. While many are happy about the news, it’s surprising that’s happening given the popularity of the technique.

Christopher Nolan reveals to Hero Complex that he opted to not use 3D for The Dark Knight Rises because he wants the film to give the same feeling as the previous two. “We want the look and feel of the film to be faithful to what has come before in the first two films,” he said. Nolan feels that 3D would be inconsistent with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, which came out before the 3D craze hit Hollywood. “There’s an intimacy at times [with spatial illusion of the 3-D effect] and we didn’t want to lose scale…. Our ambition for the third movie is to complete a story that has begun. This is not starting over, this not rebooting. We’re finishing something, and keeping a consistency with what’s come before has real value,” he said.

Nolan has never been shy about speaking against 3D, and would only do it if Warner Bros. forced him to use the technique (here). That was an issue that many were afraid was going to happen with the film (here). However, given all that Nolan has done with the Batman series, it’s not surprising the studio would let him do his thing. With just about every studio releasing it’s big projects in 3D, Nolan was able to convince WB that his gritty vision of Gotham City didn’t require 3D to enhance the film, but IMAX was the way to go. What’s going to be interesting to see is what this all means for Zack Snyder’s The Man of Steel, which could be released in 3D (here).

Okay, this really shouldn’t be surprising seeing as Nolan has worked with Composer Hans Zimmer on both Batman films and Inception. Nolan has always liked working with the same people on his projects, and it’s the same for Zimmer. However, if you weren’t sure, then he makes it official to Popcorn Biz that he’s composing The Dark Knight Rises.

Nolan has yet to meet with Zimmer about scoring the film, but will be next week to come up with ideas. “He was going to come over next week. We start early. I know he’s puttering around with ideas, and we sort of sneak up on things,”he said. Zimmer has become famous for his work on Nolan’s Inception and Batmanfilms, and recently won the Hollywood Film Composer Award for his work on Inception. Zimmer’s theme for The Joker and Batman has become popular amongst the fans, and they’re hoping hear yet another great theme for whoever is the next Batman villain.

So, with Zimmer returning for the next Batman, it’s speculated that Nolan could tap him to score Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot as well. He doesn’t give whether or nor he’ll score the film, but does offer insight into how he would replace John Williams’ theme for Donner’s Superman film. “It’s a hard one, but I followed one of the most iconic things on ‘Batman’ with Chris as well, and it’s the same thing. You are allowed to reinvent, but you have to try to be as good or at least as iconic and it has to resonate and it has to become a part of the zeitgeist,” he said. With Zimmer already created an amazing score for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, it would be great to see what he could do for Superman’s theme. Given the relationship between the two, it’s very likely he’ll score the film.

Anticipation for Nolan’s next Batman film is at an all-time high. We’ve heard that Tom Hardy has been cast (here), and that he’s currently searching for the female lead (here). Now, Nolan has finally given us the title of his third (and possibly final) Batman film, and a few other details.

Speaking with Hero Complex, Nolan reveals that The Dark Knight Rises will be the official title. While you may be thinking he’s going to reveal the identity of Batman’s next foe, he only eliminates the most rumored/speculated character, The Riddler. “It won’t be the Riddler,” he said. Of course, that still leaves us with the possibility of Catwoman, Talia Al Ghul, Killer Croc, and a few other characters. But at least we can mark one more off the list of potentials.

Nolan does tease us that many of the old characters like Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), Lucious Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Alfred (Michael Caine) will be coming back, but we already guessed that, right? He’ll also be bringing new characters in the film, but doesn’t reveal which ones. “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,” he said. Nolan revealed the reason he didn’t include The Riddler is because everyone assumed he was the most obvious choice. Nolan also denies 3D will be used in filming The Dark Knight Rises, but didn’t give a reason as to why he decided against it. Instead, Nolan will be filming once again in IMAX, but it’s uncertain if the entire film will be shot that way.

Production is looking to begin in April.

While rumors about who will be Batman’s next adversary(s) are plaguing the Internet, it’s been recently questioned where filming would take place. Word of director Christopher Nolan taking the film away from Chicago first appeared in early August (here), and resurfaced from a more reliable source earlier this month (here). However, Think McFly Think now makes it official, Batman 3 will be filming in The Big Easy.

That’s not to say that New Orleans will be the only location, and Chicago will once again be used as Gotham City. It appears New Orleans will only be used for interior shots, with Chicago as exterior. It was first assumed that (and speculated by Mark Miller here) Batman would be heading away from Gotham as he did briefly in The Dark Knight, and has generated yet another rumor that Killer Croc is a possible villain (here). Although, this news seems to squash that idea.

Production is looking to begin next April for release in July of 2012.

We’ve heard that filming would begin next April (here), and Tom Hardy (Inception) was recently cast in an unspecified (possibly the villain) role for the film (here). Now, Warner Bros. and Nolan are looking for the female lead in Batman 3.

An insider tells Moviehole that Nolan and the studio a ”revolving door will be in operation for the better part of this week”, and have been meeting with actresses for the female lead. It’s unknown which actresses Nolan has met with, but he’s apparently looking for actresses in their late-20s to early-30s. The actresses have only accepted the offer to meet with the director, and are unaware of what role they’re competing for. However, they should know when they speak with Nolan.

The big question is, who will they portray? Among the many rumors for the film’s villain, only a couple of them have been a villainess. Two characters that have been rumored were Catwoman (here) and Talia al Ghul (here). What’s interesting is that Marion Cotillard (Inception) was rumored (here) to have turned down both roles in the film. And with Rachel Dawes out of the picture, Wayne/Batman could see either one as his next love. Another character fans (myself included) have expressed interest in seeing is Harley Quinn, but including that character may not be a good idea or possibility since Nolan won’t be re-casting The Joker ( here). But for all we know, it may just be for a love interest and not a villain.

Batman 3 will open in July of 2012.

Now that we know that Zack Snyder will be directing the Superman reboot (here), and what direction it will headed (here), it’s time to get our new Superman. Fans have already mentioned names like Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Tom Welling (Smallville), and Brandon Routh. Snyder has mentioned before that Routh “isn’t likely” to return, but that has all changed.

In an article of the British newspaper, News of the World (via Comic Book Movies), they mention that fans have talked Snyder into considering Routh as Superman. “Superman director Zack Snyder may recast Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel after being impressed by fans,” they said. After Singer’s Superman Returns failed to bring in as much as the studio wanted, they were going to go with a new cast. However, Snyder reveals that Routh will be CONSIDERED for the part after an online fan campaign. “I know! “I didn’t realise there would be such a groundswell”, Snyder said.

Routh was already rumored (here) to get a screen-test, but it was thought since Snyder came on board, that was out of the question. One thing fans can get behind is that Routh was wonderful as Clark Kent/Superman, but may be casting someone else would be the way to go. The Nolans and Goyer have reportedly come up with a new take on the character, which is different compared to Donner’s version. Also, casting Routh may feel like it’s a sequel to Singer’s film, and not a reboot. However, this only means that he’s got a chance at the part. Production is set to begin after Snyder is finished with Sucker Punch in March, so we should know who’s donning the tights soon.

The Man of Steel is scheduled to open in December of 2012.

Development on The Flash has been moving along rather nice and quick over the past few months. Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Michael Green were attached to pen the script for both The Flash and Green Lantern 2 back in June, and things have been looking good so far. So good that we can expect to see a completed script for both films just in time for the holidays.

An inside source tells Deadline Hollywood that a draft for The Flash is to be handed in sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas. There’s no word on the who’s directing, but it most likely won’t be Berlanti sitting in the chair. Berlanti just came off of Life As We Know It, but doesn’t want to get into a big-budget film just yet. “He won’t want to direct it because he kinda wants to do something in between size-wise first before attempting something that large,” according to the source. However, that could all change “if Warner Bros does like the script and wants him to direct it… But that’s a lot of ifs,” the source claimed.

As for Green Lantern 2, Guggenheim, Berlanti, and Green are working on that as well, and can expect it around Christmas. ”Also, the three of them are working on the treatment for the sequel to the Green Lantern at the same time. All of which will be in by Christmas,” the source says. It seemed odd that WB would be getting ahead of themselves by working on a Green Lantern sequel, but word on Martin Campbell’s film is that it’s “jaw-dropping.” There’s no idea on where the story for either film will go, but Berlanti recently mentioned he wants to make the tone of The Flash somewhere between Green Lantern and The Dark Knight (here). Geoff Johns recently announced that two films will be released a year (here), so you can possibly expect both in 2013.
