Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the home release of David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo on March 10th. It seems rather fast the film is already leaving theaters, but considering the film hasn’t lived up to box-office expectations, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Unfortunately, the release will be bare-bones with a only commenter by the Director. However, I expect that we’ll get an extended cut of the film with more features in the future.

But the biggest question was whether or not Fincher would be returning to direct both The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. After all, it was Fincher’s style that was one of the many appealing aspects of the film, and it would be a shame for him not to return.

Well, Sony is wanting to shoot the sequel by the end of this year/beginning of next. However, sources have told The Playlist that Fincher is looking to begin production of his adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea this Fall, or by the end of the year. Obviously that would interfer with Sony’s plan to have The Girl Who Played With Fire in theaters by Christmas 2013. Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are contracted to return for both films, but Fincher isn’t. And there were also some reports that Fincher and Sony clashed over the running time of Dragon Tattoo. And since this film wasn’t a big success, Sony could want to make more demands that could sway Fincher to not return. Hopefully that doesn’t happen, but it’s a good possibility.

It was announced shortly after the movie was greenlit that Reznor and Ross would once again work on the score. This was probably the best idea that Fincher had with this film that had nothing to do with the casting.

As most (or all) know, Reznor is most known for his time as the man behind Nine Inch Nails. His work with the band was haunting, and he brought that with him when he collaborated with Ross on the soundtrack for The Social Network last year. Once again for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Reznor and Ross had that air of haunting and subtlety. Some of the best work with scores are hardly noticeable when watching the movie. Composers like Danny Elfman or John Williams have made a career out of not being noticed during the movie. With two films under their belts, Reznor and Ross have accomplished this. When watching the movie, you end so enthralled you forget about the music. It isn’t booming or annoying. At points during the movie you realize the music and it fits so perfectly with the film.

The original score for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be available to purchase on December 27, but Reznor and Ross made the album available for digital download on a special website. When listening to it before seeing the movie, you can picture a few things here or there based on the trailers and commercials, but after seeing the movie, the score has a whole new feel to it. Since the score is just as long as the movie, at a run time of about 2 hours and 40 minutes, the listener can picture what was happening at the same time in the movie. From the opening track, Reznor and Karen O’s cover of Led Zeppelin The Immigrant Song, through the other 38 (yes, 38) tracks, this is about as perfect a score as one can come across. It’s subtle and haunting. It’s a score you can put on either driving in your car, working, at home or trying to fall asleep. The layout of the score is interesting as well. It starts off with the previously mentioned cover, goes through 37 tracks of score and then ends with another cover tack featuring vocals, Is You Love Strong Enough featuring How To Destroy Angels (which happens to be Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Reznor’s wife). It’s a chilling soung that must be heard to be believed.

There really haven’t been too many memorable original scores this year, but this is one that will be remembered for sure. Is back to back Oscar’s in the future for Reznor and Ross? After listening to this score, there is no doubt that these 2 men are the front runner for that award.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the popular novels by Stieg Larrson have become a phenomenon in more than just his native Sweden. This fact is a reassuring one. Anytime people go out of their way to read books that aren’t about sparkly vampires or watch films that challenge them, I momentarily have hope for the human race. David Fincher’s take on Larrson’s material is like an imperfect blow-job. It’s exciting, and terrifying because teeth can sometimes leave scars.

Of course I have seen all of the Swedish film adaptations, and I absolutely love them. They are raw, gritty, and make the audience work for the payoff. As a viewer you’ve got to spend time with these films. I’m happy to say that Fincher isn’t much for making things easy for his audience either, because his adaptation is both beautifully difficult at times, and sensual, yet calming at others. From the very first second of the title sequence I knew I was going to be pulled into Fincher’s icy wonderland, and by the end of the sequence I was on my knees begging for more.

On the surface Dragon Tattoo is nothing more than an old fashioned who-done-it, but in Fincher’s hands it’s much, much more. The first thing to slap me in the face was the stark, beautiful landscapes used to paint the backdrop for some of the most lush characters in cinematic history. The beautiful soft white of the snow juxtaposed against the muted grays of the urban dwellings create an atmosphere that sticks with you long after leaving the theatre. Also, the music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is aurally arousing. I smell an Oscar. On one level Fincher’s take on the material is better than the Swedish film, and is an absolutely stunning rendition, as close to perfection as I’ve seen in a long time. But there’s something about the Swedish adaptation that grabbed hold of my balls and has never let go. Like Let The Right One In and Let Me In, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has two faithful and powerful chapters that have been acculturated together under the stern guidance of Larrson’s words.

When you get down to it, this is a story about a girl. That girl is Lisbeth Salander, brilliantly play by Rooney Mara. Mara attacked the role differently than Noomi Rapace, who played Lisbeth in the Swedish version of the picture. Mara added a touch of femininity to the part, and in doing so raised the sexy meter more than just a few notches. While, Rapace played the part with a masculine tone. I also have to say that Mara’s beautiful pear shaped ass is a vision of perfection that I haven’t been able to get out of my head since seeing the picture. Yum.

Daniel Craig’s Mikael Blomkvist is the yin to Lisbeth’s yang. He’s the catalyst that brings Lisbeth into a world that will forever change her life. Craig plays the character with an air of refinement. He’s a broken man that loves his whiskey with a side of pussy. He smokes to much, cares more about his work than he should, and loves intensely for short periods of time. An elegantly drawn character executed with style and grace. Enough said.

If the two leads are solid casting choices, then the supporting cast might just be the best ever captured on film. Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger, the man that can’t close the door on the past. Robin Wright, Yoric Van Wageningen, Steven Berkoff, Julian Sands, and Stellan Skarsgård giving the performance of a lifetime as Martin Vanger.

I don’t have many complaints with this version of the story, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t bitch about something. That something is the fact that I felt like Fincher could have pushed the boundaries a little further. It seemed like he was holding back at times, when he should have been balls deep in bodily fluids. Anyway, that’s a small complaint about an amazing picture that is absolutely a killer film.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

We’ve already heard that Sony is pushing to adapt The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, but it’s uknown if Fincher will return. However, Fincher did mention in an interview (via Colider) that he would shoot both films back to back if he returned. “Yes, the second two books are very much one story and it doesn’t seem prudent to me to go to Sweden for a year. Come back for a year. Put out the second one. Go to Sweden for a year. Come back for a year. I don’t think Rooney wants to be doing this four years from now. So I think that would be crazy especially given the sense that it’s really one story that’s kind of bifurcated in the middle,” he said.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is likely to be a big hit for Sony, and they would want to move forward on the sequels quickly. However, Collider also spoke with Screenwriter Steve Zaillian, and has yet to begin writting the sequel. According to Zaillian, it would take him about six months to pen a draft, and that it would probably take them until late-2012 to start production.

While there’s another Goon coming to theaters soon, this is The Goon, based on the popular comic series from Eric Powell. He posted some test footage from the film, which is in an early pre-production phase from director David Fincher. The sad thing is, this is kind of cool, yet the final film might never been completed due to lack of studio help.

Check it out, along with what Powell said on Twitter:

“This is early rough test animation for the David Fincher / Blur Studios / Dark Horse Entertainment produced film THE GOON. Based on the Dark Horse Comic’s series by Eric Powell.

Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti provided the voices for this test.

THIS IS NOT INDICATIVE OF THE FINAL PRODUCT.”

While an official release of the trailer is coming very soon, some lucky guy/girl nabbed a bootleg copy of the trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Be warned: at any time the trailer could be removed, so it isn’t Killer Film’s fault. Do, however, look for the official trailer here when it pops online.

It certainly has its own energy. I love the tag line too, “The Feel Bad Movie of Christmas”. Awesome.

December 21st, 2011 is the planned release date.

However, Deadline Hollywood is hearing that David Fincher (The Social Network) is hearing the studio is having conversations to direct the film. The only problem right now is scheduling. Fincher is directing a remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for Sony, and is expected to return and remake The Girl Who Played With Fire, which is already been written. Sony wants to get this film underway soon, and there’s a very good chance this might not happen.

It’s a fair misinterpretation of David Fincher’s work in calling his Oscar-nominated The Social Network the film of our generation. Why? I know this, because Tyler knows this. I think people have forgot how influential his Chuck Palahniuk adaptation of Fight Club really is. Well, it’s certainly not lost on Fincher or his new musical collaborator Trent Reznor of NIN…well…

In a recent interview, Reznor confirmed that he’s doing a Fight Club: The Musical for Broadway. “It would be the exact opposite of Spider-Man,” Reznor said quickly, referring to the beleaguered Broadway production scored by Bono. “And we’d be writing the music from scratch.” He added that the project is still in the earlier stages of consideration.”

Reznor is going to score Fincher’s upcoming The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. You’re the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world. Indeed. Thoughts?
