Karate Kid 2 is officially moving forward

I have yet to see The Karate Kid remake, but the film was able to gross enough to gain a sequel, and it was announced back in 2010. However, news on the sequel has been scarce since then. But Columbia Pictures has now announced the film is officially underway with Zak Penn brought in to draft a screenplay. Niether Jackie Chan nor Jaden Smith are attached just yet.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo opens a day early

Those who are anticipating David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo are in luck today as Columbia Pictures has announced (via Coming Soon) the film will open a day early on December 20th. With the film opening on Christmas weekend, the studio is hoping to earn as much money as possible by giving the film an extended weekend. This same thing was done for all three of Michael Bay’s Transformers films, and several other films.

Big Man Japan remake in the works

Columbia Pictures announced today (via Coming Soon) they have acquired the rights to remake Hitoshi Matsumoto’s Big Man Japan. The original film was “set in a world where monsters wreak havoc, there’s one man who can protect the citizenry: Big Man Japan, who runs the Department of Monster Prevention. Using electricity, he can grow to be 10 stories tall and fight off the most menacing of monsters. The problem is that he’s not very good at his job and often causes as much damage as he prevents. The people believe he’s a joke and not nearly as good at the job as his father and grandfather were before he took over the family business”. Sounds like a job for Jack Black.

No director has been attached yet.

Another surprise cameo for Zombieland 2?

Cameos in film have always been fun to view, like in Tod Phillip’s The Hangover, but that’s only when they’re a surprise. Probably none of them were as much as fun to watch as the cameo in Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland. While it’s uncertain when a sequel will be coming (here), we could be seeing yet another great cameo.

Blood-Disgusting was tipped off by an inside source, and mentioned that Columbia is looking to plan another cameo to grab the attention of fans. According to the source, the studio is looking for someone iconic like Harrison Ford or Anthony Hopkins. Neither Hopkins or Ford have been confirmed for the sequel, but it’s just an idea of who the studio is looking for. It’s also said the villain will be “comedic roots”, and that Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) going up against a “hunky rival”.

Elba and Whitworth in talks to join Ghost Rider 2

Filming on Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance has already begun, but it looks like the film is also still rounding out its cast. Heat Vision Blog reports that Idris Elba (Thor) and Johnny Whitworth (3:10 to Yuma) are in negotiating to star in the film.

Elba’s character will be “an alcoholic warrior monk tasked with finding Ghost Rider.” Elba was reported to the other day to have a contract for multiple Marvel films (here). However, this won’t be what he was talking about as Columbia Pictures owns the rights to Ghost Rider, not Marvel Studios.

Whitworth will play a criminal who is recruited by the Devil (Ciaran Hinds) to find his mortal son, so he can join bodies on his son’s birthday. Whitworth’s character will then be turned into a demon. The film will see Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) as he is hired to stop the Devil from accomplishing his goal.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will open on February 17, 2012.

Rumor: Aronofsky wanted to direct Preacher

Darren Aronofsky is becoming of the most desired to helm a superhero film. He’s already been rumored to be in talks for Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 and one of the many director’s Nolan has been meeting with to direct The Man of Steel. Now, it looks like Aronofsky is wanted to directed an adaptation of Vertigo comics Preacher.

According to News-a-rama, a source claims that Aronofsky is wanted to direct Preacher for Columbia Pictures.

For those who haven’t read the comics, Preacher centers on a preacher named Jesse Custer, who has been possessed, and destroys his congregation and church. Custer then goes on a mission to find God. Sam Mendes was originally set to direct, but left presumably to helm Bond 23. Production is looking to begin next year, would most certainly interfere with The Man of Steel, should Aronofsky get the job. However, a call was made to the film’s production studios, with no response. So, this should only be taken as rumor right now.

“Exciting” Spider-man news coming

Production on Marc Webb’s Spider-man reboot is scheduled to begin in December, and there’s one problem, no one besides Andrew Garlfield is reportedly attached. There’s already been a few rumors about who’ll be cast in the supporting roles, but nothing official. However, Webb claims that more information will be coming soon.

Of course, he didn’t give anything away, but he told IGN that news will be coming soon. “Right, this is the s**ty answer, but I can’t actually talk about it. But there will be more information forthcoming on that. But I’m so stoked. Really, really exciting stuff!” he said. A shortlist for Peter Parker’s love interest (which will reportedly not be Mary Jane Watson) was revealed (here), with Hilary Duff also rumored for a role in the film (here). The villain has also yet to be revealed, but rumored to be The Lizard. An official title may also be revealed.

The untitled Spider-man reboot will open in July of 2012.

Carl Ellsworth has Goosebumps

R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series is still very popular with its run sixty-two books published, two video-games, and a popular television series. Columbia Pictures acquired the rights for a feature film back in 2008, but has yet to move forward.

Now, Risky Business reports that Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia) has been hired to write the film. The books were more family driven horror stories, and Columbia is looking to continue that. Screenwriters Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander were previously attached, with the idea of an original story, and not one based on any of the books. It’s unknown it that’s will still be the plan.

Hillary Duff offered role in Spider-Man reboot?

Now that Andrew Garfield has been cast as Spidey, it’s time to look for the supporting cast members. There was a shortlist revealed featuring a number of relatively unknown actresses, and it looks like one more may be added to that list.

The Globe and Mail interviewed Duff’s husband and he let it slip that the former pop star may have been offered a role in the film.

He didn’t reveal if she would be auditioning for the role Peter Parker’s love interest, and only that “ script marked “Spider-man” sits on the table, with lines for a character simply called “girl” highlighted in yellow.” There’s still no word on which character will be Spider-Man love interest in the film. The film is apparently going to separate itself from Raimi’s trilogy, and not feature Mary Jane Watson as Parker’s love interest in the film.

Venkmen’s love-child the lead in Ghostbusters 3?

It’s hard to determine the status of the long-awaited Ghostbusters 3. Nothing has been heard on the development of the film for a while, but there was a draft written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Now, details on that script seemed to have emerged with development possibly moving forward.

Bloody Disgusting reports that an unnamed source has revealed that Oscar, the son of Dana Barret (Sigourney Weaver) will be the new lead character in the film. It’s also revealed that he will be the love-child of Peter Venkmen (Bill Murray) and Dana Barret. Oscar is also reportedly going to take over Venkmen’s job as one of the new generation of Ghostbusters.

The source also claims that Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz) , Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Harold Ramis (Egon Spangler), and Bill Murray are signed on to reprise their roles. Also, that Rick Marranis and Sigourney Weaver will be making a comeback too. Development on the film is apparently progressing, no word on when production would begin. However, you should take this a grain of salt.

Ghost Rider 2 heading to Romania, in 3D

Development on Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will be starting soon. Nicholas Cage has been confirmed to return as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider with Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank) helming the film. Now, a filming location has been confirmed for the sequel.

According to Hot News, production will be heading to Romania and will be shot in 3-D this fall. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the sequel of Ghost Rider (2007), the action movie inspired from the Marvel comics will be shot starting this Fall in Romania,” Bogdan Moncea, Marketing Manager at Castel Film said. This will be the second big-budget film shot in Romania, but will be the first 3-D film shot in the location.

Details on the plot are unknown as of right now, Cage has said in previous interviews that “you don’t have to have seen the first film” to understand the sequel. Ghost Rider 2 will be picking up a few years after the first film, but it won’t contradict anything that happened in the original. This film will also be set a different tone than the first. While Cage is set to reprise his role, Eva Mendes has been confirmed to not return.

Official Trailer for The Social Network

We’ve seen our first look at David Fincher’s film on the origins of Facebook, The Social Network in a couple of teaser trailers. Now, Yahoo Movies has the first full trailer for the film.

The film will stars Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Andrew Garfield, Joseph Mazzello, and Armie Hammer. Scott Rudin, Kevin Spacey, and Michael De Luca will be producing. The story was written by Aaron Sorkin and will center on the origins of the popular social networking site Facebook.

The Social Network will open on October 1, 2010.

Ghost Rider 2 will take “a different trajectory”

There was a time when it seemed that a Ghost Rider sequel wasn’t going to happen. Columbia Pictures wanted to go into production right away to keep the rights, and Nicholas Cage had to choose whether or not he would return. The actor ultimately chose to return as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider, and the film is already in pre-production. Nothing has been heard on the film since, but Mtv News sat down and talked to Cage about the film.

Cage is “very excited” about working with Crank directors, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. The actor states that he thinks the two “originals, and they know how to make a movie look great, and they know how to use a camera.” The duo apparently have “a very fresh take on the character.” The sequel is set to deviate from the original film, and will be “a different trajectory.” Filming is expected to begin in November.

Nicholas Cage will next be seen in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice opening on July 14, 2010.

No Facebook marketing for The Social Network

Facebook has become a successful and popular way for studios to advertise their upcoming movies. It would seem obvious that a film based upon the founding of the site would be advertised there, right? Apparently not. Facebook is ironically not allowing any advertising for the film.

All Things Digital is reporting the guidelines for advertising on Facebook don’t allow ads that reference the company unless Facebook cooperates. This was the response that Steve Elzer, SVP of Media Relations for Sony (SNE) movie unit Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group gave to a BoomTown query. This could also be a response from the founder of the site, Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who isn’t happy about the way he was portrayed. Elliot Schrage, PR agent for Facebook, confirmed they won’t be taking any money for the film.

The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Rashida Jones, Joseph Mazzello, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, Rooney Mara, Max Minghella, Andrew Garfield. Scott Rudin, Kevin Spacey, and Michael De Luca will be producing. Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay based upon the novel by Ben Mezrich. David Fincher will direct.

The Social Network opens on October 1, 2010.
