2010 is coming to an end, and every year I always compile a list of every 2010 release I have seen and order them according to their ranking. Well, here are the films which made it to the bottom of the barrel for me, films so bad I’d rather crawl through a sewer than watch them again.

Get Him To The Greek

I know there are those out there who liked this film and thought it was funny, well I am not one of them. As a big fan of Forgetting Sarah Marshall I really expected more from this spin-off, being so entertained the first time around by Russell Brand as Aldous Snow. This really fell flat, very few laughs, not enjoyable, certainly a real low point for comedy in 2010.

Robin Hood

I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott and I was pretty excited for this film, going in I did have expectations. What a huge let down, sure it was an origin story, but it just seemed to piss all over everything that had been done with Robin Hood in the past. The main character was not likable, there was no stealing from the rich and giving to the poor (one scene, big whoop) and it was incredibly boring. I struggled to stay awake through most of this film.

Clash Of The Titans

What a turd this turned out to be, it took me four sittings to finally sit through this entire film. Much like Robin Hood, I could not stay awake, there was no interest, terrible acting, a storyline I didn’t care about and well it was boring. This was excruciating to sit through, and thanks for the apology Sam.

A Nightmare On Elm Street

Trailers sure can be deceiving, see the trailer tricked me into thinking this would be good. Instead it was a horrible mess, and pretty much an insult to a franchise I adore. Jackie Earle Haley was fine, despite the Rorschach voice but everything else was terrible. Don’t even get me started on Rooney Mara and her inability to be interesting.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

These films just get worse and worse, from the script to the acting, this is atrocious. I had hopes because David Slade was directing, but again much like New Moon this was uneventful and annoying. The characters seem to get worse, as do the actors playing them. This series sends out bad messages to the audience it is aimed at, I even for a moment thought Jacob was going to force himself on Bella (well more so than he did), and apparently that’s acceptable behaviour. Nope, pass!

Legion

The film which was the worst of the bunch, Legion. I hated everything about this movie, I was so excited to see this and I couldn’t believe the disappointment. There is just about nothing good about this film (aside from Kevin Durand), even the best of actors (Dennis Quaid) were beyond terrible. If I ever have to sit through this again, I’m stabbing my eyes out with a fork. This was easily one of the worst films to come out in the past 10 years.

It seems Sam Worthington has some regrets about the film, and makes sure to put the point across the sequel will be much better. He spoke to MovieFone recently and he had the following to say.

“I just think we can improve on it, I think the first one, we kind of let down some people. And yeah, I totally agree. The only point of doing a sequel is either the audience demands it or you believe you can better the first one. What we’re setting out to do with this one (the writers and the director and myself) is improve. I think I can act fucking better, to be honest … Just take all the notes from people that I have been reading about on the ‘net and give them a movie they fucking want. This one I want to kind of try to satisfy a lot more people. I’ve always said you make movies for an audience, that’s who you make movies for. If the audience is speaking, it’s like the old gladiator thing, they give us the thumbs up/thumbs down, you want to stay alive in that coliseum as long as you can.”

The sequel begins filming in March next year, with Sam reprising his role as Perseus.

Sam Worthington and Gemma Arterton are confirmed to return, but the film was still missing one important thing, a director. The original film’s director, Louis Leterrier, declined to return, and led the studio to search for a replacement.

According to Heat Vision Blog, Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles) has now been confirmed to direct the sequel.

The studio has been negotiation with Liebesman to direct the film since June, but money became a factor and the negative reception of the original film. WB is hoping this time to improve on the first film’s mistakes. The film will be shot in 3-D as opposed to a last minute post-conversion, with Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern), Dan Mazeau, and David Leslie Johnson working on the script. Production is scheduled to begin in January for a release in Spring of 2012.

If I was to say Clash of the Titans was a mythology-light, action-oriented, campy, visual effects extravaganza, would I be talking about the 1981 film or the 3D 2010 film? Cut from the same cloth, both Clash of the Titans are mimicking each other, so much so, that it’s hard to fault this remake for the flaws the 1981 film had. Hopefully, the Gods won’t smite me for saying this, but as much as I love the work and films of Ray Harryhausen, Clash of the Titans was certainly weaker in a lot of areas than his other fantasy films like Jason and the Argonauts or The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, so remaking it wasn’t an issue to me. Instead of clearing away some of the 1981 film’s flaws, they decided to go with the visual effects update, and that’s really all there is to the 2010 film.

There’s nothing really wrong with that, mind you. Have we gotten away from the fun of the spectacle? We can debate Harryhausen’s films all day on their merits and quality, but the man had one thing in his corner, from film to film, he wowed. Even though, I personally feel that the 1981 version of Clash is flawed, but decent fun, Harryhausen’s work in stop-motion effects were unrivaled, and that’s all the plot served. The visual effects was the film’s star and Harryhausen delivered. In the 2010 version, CG is now the tool and while some scenes are better than others visually, 2010’s Clash is a effects driven film, and when you look at it that way, it’s a flawed, but decent time.

You’ll be amazed by how similar the two versions are, yet there is one key difference: Ray Harryhausen’s creatures, and films even, had magic. His creatures were show-stoppers. Not just because he was the King of Stop-Motion, but his creatures had that little bit extra in their mannerisms, that made them alive and aided that magic. I’m not knocking Louis Leterrier (Incredible Hulk) at all, but these creatures are straight-up cookie cutter CG monsters. We can debate the differences all day long, but the 2010 version is hampered by extremely hamfisted dialogue and a ton of exposition. The exposition is filler, clinging the scenes of spectacle together. Here, Perseus’s (Sam Worthington) journey seems really easy. Whenever in a bind, just listen to Athena as her exposition will clear it all up. I can’t be too down, as all actors involved in both film version had cheesy dialogue to work with, let alone a script that gave them little to do.

You can see it at times, the underlining subtext of the film, where Man is here to control his own destiny, damn the gods. One wishes, if anything this new version added, was a bit more to this idea. Is asking for just a little intellectual stimulation against the visual eye candy, too much to ask sometimes? And the pre-release controversy of WB’s decision to add a post 3D gimmick to the film, does feels tacked on, yet it isn’t that bad. There’s some fun to be had with the 3D, you sticklers, but when it all comes back down to is, 2010’s Clash of the Titans is much like the 1981’s Clash. Big, loud, effects driven film that is nothing more than quickie entertainment, and by Zeus, flaws and all, that’s what Leterrier brought.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: Warner offers up a great HD presentation. The DTS audio just destroys. Loud, active, bass heavy, as if the Gods themselves ordered the eruption from your speakers. The better home theater audio system you have, the better this will be, as it sounds as good as any new film released in HD. The picture is equally as good, almost too clean as some have noted that dreaded DNR had made an appearance. If anything, close up details aren’t as superb as in mid-range, but overall, it’s really good.

All extras in HD.

Maximum Movie Mode: A typical Picture-in-Picture extra WB introduced to many of their high-end titles, but Louis Letterier isn’t present. Instead, we get everyone else as they talk about the making-of. It isn’t the most thorough PiP around, but it’s solid. If you rather just get the goodies separately just watch the Focal Points. They offer some new material, but combined offer a better overview of the film, especially since there’s no commentary.

Sam Worthington: An Action Hero for the Ages: An 8-minute promo for the budding action star, with interviews.

Deleted Scenes: For most of these, we get some deleted Olympian Council. Passable, but watch the deleted ending, it’s really interesting and dark.

BD-Live rounds out the extras.

Conclusion: Light fun on a really good Blu-ray, that probably needed more extras.

The Film: Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Welcome to Killer Film‘s New Release Tuesday for July 27th! Some great titles here and remember you can order via #800000;”>Amazon.com just by clicking on the cover art!

Clash of the Titans

As much as it is enjoyable with its creatures and action, the plot makes it pretty forgettable. As a remake, it’s a fine attempt, and it dominated the box office this year as well. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Batman – Under the Red Hood

DCU/WB Animation is back and while their last few films were decent, they haven’t had a superb film in a year or so (that’s like 3 to 4 movies). Early word has this being really good. It’s dark and violent, featuring some great action and storytelling. I’m looking forward to it. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

Repo Men

Okay, so nobody saw this due to the connection to near plagiarism with Terrance Zdunich’s Repo! A Genetic Opera. If you can get passed that – and it is hard – it’s an okay movie. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Ip Man

Finally, the long-awaited martial arts film that follows the real life Ip Man, who famously taught Bruce Lee comes to America. It’s won numerous awards for Best Film and action at the Chinese version of the Oscars, while having a strong performance by Donnie Yen. Looks amazing!
Fan Boys

That does it for the final week in July, but keep it here for more news and reviews on these discs and more, only on Killer Film!

M. Night Shyamalan needed this. He needed a project based on an established source material to help him cleanse whatever went horribly wrong with his last three films. A sense of direction, something that was missed in his Lady in the Water, The Village, and The Happening, and while we applaud original ideas, those films weren’t executed well. Maybe that’s putting it mildly. With a chance to take his sure directorial hand, because if anything, it’s not his directorial eye that’s bad, it’s his writing, and give a summer CG-action film a shot. The results, however, no matter how proven the anime source material was, is a failed, cold, and heartless film. And M. Night didn’t need that.

The popular, if not, the most popular Nickelodeon show, lasted three seasons, based on each element Aang, the last airbender, must learn to manipulate to save blah blah blah, should have remained a cartoon. One of the damning things about The Last Airbender is how much it tries to put into a condensed hour and forty-five minutes, an act that offers a blitzing crash course into the series’ mythology and characters, rushing things to feel like a introductory course for long-time fans, and a film that has us non-fans either rushing to Wikipedia to find out what’s what or worse, having us not caring. Most will not care. That’s the issue. This dividing line to appease long-time fans and attract new ones, and it all falls flat on the face of its second issue: dialogue. It’s awful and quite laughable. “Do you have a place for me to meditate?” “Yes, we have a special place.”

To me, even in his less than stellar films, M. Night has always taking his time to build story, characters, and atmosphere. Granted, he has dealt in genres films mostly, but in The Last Airbender, he seems oddly distant from the film and story he’s try to tell, and I would love to not blame him, but he’s also credited as the screenwriter. Where, oh, where has the rising star director of Unbreakable gone? M. Night is in quicksand and if this project was to do anything, it was to stabilize his sinking career. I hate to condemn one man for a failure, but it’s his fourth straight, a film so detached from the director to the audience, so messy, so riddled with convolution, all wrapped up in that horrible 3D conversion like Clash of the Titans, that it feels so unneeded. Fans will be irritated by its need to apply simplification to appease the masses. And the masses will be bored stiff by this lifeless entity filled with an orgy of heavy-handed exposition. As a collective, The Last Airbender is a crushing headache.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5 stars

PassmoreLab is a San Diego-based production house, known for converting 2D movies to 3D (ala Clash of the Titans 2010), will be taking the immortal “bad” movie, director Ed Wood’s opus Plan 9 from Outer Space and converting it to 3D. The following is from their press release:

The film, also known as the “worst movie ever made” due to its numerous continuity and production gaffes, has become an iconic sci-fi cult classic due largely to its reputation for being so bad. It was christened “worst movie” back in 1980 by Harry and Michael Medved in their book The Golden Turkey Awards, when they claimed to have found the “holy Grail” of bad movies. Since then, the movie has become very popular.

“Being dubbed ‘worst ever’ was probably the best thing that ever happened to this film,” said Greg Passmore, president of PassmoreLab. “That label started a cult following, where it gained a massive fan base, with me included. It may be known as the ‘worst movie’, but it’s about to get best conversion treatment available. I am delighted to convert the original film into 3D using our proprietary technology.”

As campy as it is, Plan 9 is now widely considered to be legendary B-movie director Ed Wood’s masterpiece, albeit a bad one. Both he and the film gained more notoriety after they became the subject of Tim Burton’s 1994 film Ed Wood with Johnny Depp starring in an angora sweater in the title role.

“Our studio has a definite indie feel to it – a little alternative and off-center — and we are absolutely drawn to cool and unusual projects,” continued Passmore. “That was a big reason we converted Romero’s Night of the Living Dead last year. And that’s exactly why we are converting Plan 9, because we love cult films, and we take great care with them.”

Plan 9 from Outer Space was written, produced, directed, and edited by Wood and was originally shot in black and white over 50 years ago. It was restored and colorized by Legend Films in 2006 and will now be converted, frame by frame, into full 3D using Passmorelab’s proprietary conversion technology. It is Legend Film’s colorized version that is being used for the conversion, which will take over 6 weeks to complete at a cost far greater than the film’s original $60,000 production budget.

“Converting film demands great attention to detail, especially with a film this old. Rest assured, audiences will be able to enjoy the same film they have always known — complete with the 73 or so production flubs — except now they will see those wires, strings, and wobbly flying saucers in spectacular 3D,” smiles Passmore.

3D conversion is emerging as an incredible opportunity for content owners worldwide, and by employing PassmoreLab’s proprietary technology, it can become a very cost-effective way of re-purposing previously viewed material.

“3D continues to penetrate new distribution channels as an industry, and conversion is a big part of our business. All the great films we love in 2D can now be converted into 3D seamlessly to attract new audiences and find new revenue streams,” said Steve Glum, PassmoreLab’s head of Branding & Distribution. “Plan 9 from Outer Space, Now in 3D! is the original film, the granddaddy of all bad movies, and we think audiences everywhere will have a great time seeing it in 3D.

What do you all think?

Now according to Heat Vision Blog, Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures have hired Dan Mazeau and David Leslie Johnson to pen the script to the upcoming sequel.

Mazeau and Johnson have both worked with Warner Bros. on separate projects. The two will be teaming with Greg Berlanti, who has been on board since the original film’s release. They will be working on the treatment, then the screenplay for the film.

Production is expected to begin soon, before Sam Worthington starts work on Avatar 2. Warner Bros. hopes this move will save time and guarantee a more cohesive story this time. The sequel will be shot in 3-D this time, instead of being converted in post-production. The studio is looking to release the film in spring of 2012.

They’re moving on this one fast, especially since the numbers are in WB’s favor to capitalize off of a hot property ($162 million domestically and $325 million overseas, on a budget of $125 million). Unlike the film we saw this past March, this sequel will be shot in real 3D, no post-production conversion.

Another key reason WB wants to get this film rolling later this year, early 2011, is that star Sam Worthington is committed to shoot Avatar 2 later i 2011. Look for more later, but we can see Liebesman’s action directing chops soon in Battle: Los Angeles.

The story is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace (Deadline).

Not only is Beacham busy at work with writing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but the scribe is attached to put together a script for The Black Hole remake. Legendary Pictures has quite a few films on it’s slate for release, especially for this summer. Inception and Jonah Hex are both under their belt, which can lead for a very fruitful revenue summer at least for one of them.

“Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are moving ahead with a sequel to Clash of the Titans, which the studio would like as early as spring, 2012. But they will make the journey without Louis Leterrier, who will not return for an encore as director.”

Leterrier will still be attached as executive producer, and Sam Worthington is set to return as Perseus. The studio is currently looking for a new director at the moment, but is hoping to begin shooting before Worthington begins Avatar 2. Greg Berlanti will be writing the story.

James Cameron made 3-D popular with his most recent film, Avatar, but even he says that the craze Hollywood has with the format is ridiculous. Now, according to the Daily Express, James Cameron wants there to be a new organization to publicize and protect 3-D films:

“What I’d love to do is put together some kind of a forum with the DGA (Directors Guild of America), let’s say, and maybe the ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) and we’d have to do it in Canada, too. I think some quality standards do need to be discussed. I think the studios and big distribution companies need to be included in that dialogue. Let’s not do stupid stuff that’s going to hurt this burgeoning marketplace.”

Cameron used Warner Bros Pictures’ last minute decision to convert Clash of the Titans as a good example of this. There needs to be some control on this genre if it’s going to stick around. Hollywood wants almost any film to be converted, but not all need to be in this format. To myself so far, Avatar has been the only film that hasn’t made it gimmicky.
