Up all night and sleep all day seems like the norm living in Las Vegas. I should know being a local for 14 years, but in Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night there’s a whole new explanation – VAMPIRES, and not the romantic, soft spoken, sparkly vampires we are used to seeing today. These are the fast, bad-boy, bloodthirsty vampires reminiscent of the ones portrayed in The Lost Boys. I know what you’re thinking, ANOTHER REMAKE! I said it too, but this one is worth the watch. It’s not a direct remake but a funny/scary modern day spin on the 1985 cult classic.

High-School senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) used to be a geek hanging out with “Evil” Ed Thompson (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and other geeks back in the day until he ditched that world and became one of the cool kids, and started dating the hottest girl in school; Amy (Imogen Potts) while living it up with his flirtatious mom (Toni Collette) in a quiet suburban town in Las Vegas. What can go wrong? Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. The mysterious and seductive, night construction worker immediately wins everyone over except for Ed who is certain Jerry is a vampire and responsible for the disappearance of his friend and is determined to blow his cover. When Charley is finally convinced his only hope may be Vegas show headliner Peter Vincent (David Tennant), an international magician and illusionist who is a cross between Chris Angel and Russell Brand. But is Peter the real deal or just another illusionist playing make-believe? Only time will tell and Jerry is pissed.

I really enjoyed this movie and wish I would’ve seen it in 3D when I had the chance. It is funny and loaded with lots of blood and really good scares. It does not slow down at all, and believe it or not the introduction to the characters and the big reveal is all within the first half hour and then it’s pure mayhem. I really like how they kept true to the Vampire rules that we all know and love; no sunlight, wooden stake, invite only, crosses, etc. I was even happy to see in one scene a backpack filled with the very same weapons that Buffy would’ve carried. If you look close enough there is even a cameo by the original Jerry (Chris Sarandon). What I didn’t like about this film was the CGI, there wasn’t a whole lot of it but I thought the filmmakers could’ve reached a more natural look by hiring an incredible make-up artist. That is all.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

The audio track on the disc is crazy good. It sounded like I was in a movie theater for the flick’s entire runtime, and all I’ve got is a small Sony home theatre system. The video is also pretty amazing, with extreme clarity in the blacks and bursting colors during the daylight scenes.

Special Features

The Official “How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie” Guide: A short feature that has the cast and crew talking about the making of the film. Good, but short at just over eight minutes.

Peter Vincent: Come Swim in My Mind: An odd feature that has Peter Vincent giving the lowdown on his show Fright Night as if it were real. Also, very short at just over two minutes.

Deleted Scenes: A bunch of scenes that were cut out for a reason. Not a great feature, but worth checking out once, and you guessed it, it’s really short.

Squid Man: Extended & Uncut: The short film from the movie in its entirety.

There is also a small Blooper Reel, Music Video, and DVD Copy of the film as well.

The Flick Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Although for some, they would be putting a “yet” after my first sentence, but with the delays in Mark Millar’s comic follow-up for Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall and what director Matthew Vaughn recently said (here), I just don’t see it, especially in X-Men: First Class is the hit many are predicting.

“I want to [do a sequel],” Mintz-Plasse told MTV News as they once again brought up the possibility of a sequel. “We all want to, we just have to find the time. We’re busy people. If there is a sequel, I will be called The Motherf—er, and I will be a villain and kill lots of people.”

Thoughts?

This is a reader’s (he called himself Charley Brewsterrr) review from a test screening that took place in Orange, California.

I can just see it now, studio execs walking into video stores and combing the aisles looking for something to remake without any care in the world. It is a safe gamble to re-imagine something that was successful before because if it doesn’t gel, it is an out because it worked before and they can push blame elsewhere. God forbid someone takes a chance on an original script as opposed to worrying about losing their cushy job. Don’t get me wrong brother, I am not a hater when it comes to redoing a story. From wave one remakes like The Thing and The Fly, to more creative bankrupt outings like Dawn of the Dead and The Ring – all I want is a good movie, and those four titles delivered. Like a singer doing a cover of a song – the second time around can be a nice companion piece, and in some instances, turn out better.

I knew it was a matter of time before my beloved Fright Night was going to be raped by the suits in Hollywood. If Psycho, The Haunting, and Friday the 13th can be retold – why not Fright Night? Bad examples…I know. But that is the point. Some flicks are stuck in a time warp and are magic in a bottle and must be left alone. I am not talking about the Aqua Net, bad clothes, and cheesy music. The film industry has changed for the worst and here is why. Pop culture and media whoring has ruined a lot of the enjoyment of cinema. The hook is to pander to the trendy youngsters by showing them what they are familiar with: television shows (The Real Housewives of New Jersey) and an unfunny douchebag who was in a hit comedy (Superbad). This motion picture was made for parents who drop their daughters off at the mall.

Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) does battle with his next door neighbor who happens to be a vampire. Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell) is his name, and being unscary and looking like a 40-year old version of Robert Pattinson is his game. Students in the small town on the outskirts of Las Vegas go missing and Charley’s best pal – Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) – figures out from watching the news that a vampire is sucking his way through the city of sin. After Ed turns into one of the undead, he visits the throne of master magician and bloodsucking expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant), who I would describe as a cross between Criss Angel and Russell Brand, to assist in destroying Dandridge and saving his girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots) before dawn.

What Fright Night got right in 1985 was everything. For every horror nut who grew up on the film, Charley Brewster was us. He spent his nights watching scary movies to the wee hours of the morning. School was tough and dating was migraine-inducing, but watching various monsters and beasts made everything right with the world. That is what made us happy, and to the day – it still does. The script was an homage to Rear Window and The Boy Who Cried Wolf with a dose of that planet 80′s free spirit. Fright Night 3D, more like unnecessary post-conversion 3D, is in such a hurry that it forgets to tell any kind of story. There is absolute zero character development as the cardboard actors just go through the motion and it’s painful. The neighborhood feels like a leftover set from the The Stepfather, as opposed a real home on a real block. Roddy McDowell was the backbone of the original and played like a father figure to Charley. Now he is just a boozing womanizer who doesn’t come to the rescue and is just an afterthought. Chris Sarandon does make a cameo, but suffers a bite to the jugular from CG-faced Colin Farrell (who is solo, no Billy Cole) and is spared the misery that I couldn’t get away from.

No Tom Holland. No William Ragsdale. No Amanda Bearse. No Roddy McDowell. No Stephen Geoffreys. No Jonathan Stark. No Dorothy Fielding. No Art Evans. No Steve Johnson. No Richard Edlund. No heart. No soul. No thank you. You would be better off getting a Black & Decker enema…for real.

Rating: 0.5 out of 5 stars

Millar spoke with Empire Online, and revealed he wants to make Heath Ledger’s Joker look like a joke. ”My idea for Red Mist was to introduce a supervillain that made Heath Ledger’s Joker look like Cesar Romero’s Joker. He’s basically Charles Manson as a supervillain,” he said. He also intends Red Mist to now be in command of the gangs. “It’s gangs going all over New York filming atrocities on their cell phones and putting them on the internet, trying to outdo each other, all at the behest of Red Mist,” Millar said.

Ever since the release of Super Bad, Plasse has been referred to the character “McLovin”. Millar plans to reinvent that, and give audiences a name to recognize him as. “Chris said to me he hates the fact that people always call him McLovin’. So my aim was to give him a new name for people to call him. And the villain calls himself The Motherf**ker,” he said. While Plasse will be “ the worst of all supervillains”, Millar also intends to continue the of Dave and his role as Kick-Ass. The sequel is also reportedly going to feature a big gang-fight between all the villains and superheroes.

Kick-Ass 2 is tentatively schedule to be released in 2012.

Doctor Who‘s David Tennant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are joining in on the Craig Gillespie remake Fright Night. If your a huge fan of the 1985 Tom Holland film, you know already that Mintz-Plasse is taking on the role of Evil Ed, Charley’s (Anton Yelchin) best friend. Tennant is going to be Peter Vincent, who in the original version is a has-been B-horror movie actor who ends up trying to convince Charley that Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is nothing more than a human.

In the remake, he’s a Las Vegas magician whose show revolves around horror-movie imagery. Vincent claims to be a vampire expert, but when the teen turns to him for assistance, he’s less than helpful. Mintz-Plasse is playing Evil Ed, Yelchin’s friend who feels slighted that Charlie has left his nerdy past behind and thus joins the vampire’s coven (Heat Vision Blog).

That pretty much rounds out the cast at this point, judging from the fact that Toni Collette’s role as Charley’s mother is just the pure love interest to our new version of Jerry Dandrige (Farrell). Anton Yelchin plays the troubled teen who tries to convince everyone that his new neighbor is a vampire. Gillespie is directing the picture from the script written by Marti Noxon. Michael J Gaeta, Alison R. Rosenzweig and Michael De Luca are producing the feature, set to begin filming later this year in Las Vegas.

This is where the brand new red band trailer comes into play for the upcoming comic book adaptation Kick-Ass. The Lionsgate film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Aaron Johnson, Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Mark Strong.

Dave Lizewski is an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan with a few friends and who lives alone with his father. His life is not very difficult and his personal trials not that overwhelming. However, one day he makes the simple decision to become a super-hero even though he has no powers or training.

Kick-Ass comes out in theaters everywhere on April 16th. Check out the new trailer from MySpace below.:
