UK Quad for The Resident

This one flew under the radar, released on Valentine’s Day (how fitting) is the UK Quad poster for Hammer Films The Resident. It features star Hilary Swank, along with co-stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Christopher Lee. The film has a limited release currently and it was premiere on DVD March 29th. It will hit the UK on March 11th, check out the picture below.

Christopher Lee in talks for The Hobbit

At this rate the entire cast of Jackson’s Lord of the Ring’s Trilogy could be returning in The Hobbit. We’ve already heard that Eljiah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins (here), Cate Blanchet as Lady Galadriel (here), Andy Serkis as Gollum (here), Ian McKellen as Gandalf (here), and an offer has been made to Orlando Bloom to reprise his role as Legolas (here). Now, it’s been made official on his website that it “looks certain” Christopher Lee will reprise his role as Saruman.

It’s somewhat surprising that Lee would work with Jackson again after he was upset that Jackson cut him from The Return of the King. Lee went on to boycott the film’s premiere, and his scenes were later added in the Extended Edition of the film. Although, that was seven years ago, and there seems to be no bad-blood between the two. Of course, Saruman never appears in Tolkein’s novel, but if they can make it work to have Frodo inserted, then adding Lee’s character isn’t a stretch. However, some fans are worried that Jackson is trying too hard bridge this film with his trilogy.

Season of the Witch – Review

Nicolas Cage gets knocked down. But he gets up again. You are never going to keep him down. Many would say he has pissed away his career with some of the perfunctory projects he has been sidling himself next to in the recent half of his vocation. Other than a certain Indian filmmaker with an idiosyncratic name, nobody has come close to being used and abused by fans more than the man who once went by the name Nicolas Coppola.

I can roast a bad flick with the best of them, but when thirty-year old losers attack his personal appearance from their laptop in their mommy’s basement, it reeks of buffoons who have no life. To go after his hair extensions or wig, or whatever it is that he places on top of his head is absurd and childish. The man can wipe his ass with one hundred dollar bills the rest of his life, when most citizens are living from paycheck to paycheck. Not everyone looks good with a chrome dome like Bruce Willis and I. Sheesh, what the hell got into me? Time to get off my soapbox and review the flippin’ film already.

Behmen [Nicolas Cage] and Felson [Ron Perlman] are the best of friends as well as a pair of kick-ass 14th-century knights who are assigned the responsibility of transporting a supposed black witch [Claire Foy] to a far away monastery. It is there were a sect of monks will read from the good book and speak a holy incantation that will rid her of her witching ways and shall cleanse the land of the Black Death that is laying waste to humans and leaving them in a pus-ridden and diseased state that eventually leads to their demise.

Along for the journey is a motley crew that includes a devout priest, a headstrong youth, a disgraced itinerant, and a grieving knight who deal with a powerful witch who just might be more than meets the eye. There are a liberal amount of impediments along their travels including a dangling bridge and voracious wolves in a fog filled forest that seems more apropos for a Harry Potter film than a horror-thriller.

Although she is trapped in a steel cage, the enchantress has the power the to use your sorrows against you or simply overpower you with her preternatural strength if you get too close to her. Behmen has a heavy heart from all his crusading battles for the man upstairs, and that has lead to the murder of women and children and anyone who does not believe in the ways of the Lord. Our posse makes it to the abbey and find out there is a more sinister force at hand than they ever realized.

His name is nowhere to be seen on the theatrical poster, nevertheless, Ron Perlman is the star and is a gas as the boozin’, womanizing chum of Nicolas Cage, and has some sprightly one-liners. The prologue shows them in the many epic battles they have been through the years and their camaraderie seen on the battlefield seems genuine, and that pops on screen anytime they are together. Everything is going copacetic until the big reveal at the climax, which sucks the wind out of the entire picture, and on top of that, the CGI effects hop there way through candy land and only cheapen what should have been a not-so guilty pleasure for me.

The best film ever with Season of the Witch in its title still belongs to Tom Atkins and Halloween III. I am not persuading you to run out and see it, but the picture is not as bad as some of the reviews out there imply, and you should give it a go if you are into machismo schlock.

A couple of days ago KF gave you a look at a new still with Christopher Lee for Hammer’s The Resident (here), and the goods keep on coming as the trailer for the film has now been released. The films comes to DVD on March 29th, and with Lee it stars Hilary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

When a young doctor suspects she may not be alone in her new Brooklyn loft, she learns that her landlord has formed a frightening obsession with her.

How exciting was the fact that Let Me In (from last October) was not only a great film, but Hammer Films’ first vampire film in nearly 30 years? Well, let me ask you how exciting then is that horror vet/legend Christopher Lee is back with Hammer Films in The Resident, which will get a DVD debut on March 29th, 2011 from Image Entertainment. Lionsgate spouts out several brand new pictures from the upcoming thriller Season of the Witch. You can check out Nicolas Cage in all of his Nick Cage-like waves of hair, Ron Perlman being as cool as ever and one very detailed looking Christopher Lee.

Nicolas Cage stars as a 14th century crusader who returns with his comrade to a homeland devestated by the Black Plague. A beleaguered church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.

Just in time for my birthday comes to Blu-Ray release of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. This will be the Theatrical Releases, not the Extended versions that eventually came out on DVD. Release date is April 6, 2010.

Hammer Films is making its name known to a new generation with their film “The Resident” starring Hilary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Said to be in the vein of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”, Resident has Swank living in her new New York loft only to discover she may not be living alone when her landlord starts stalking her. “The Resident” also stars Christopher Lee in his anticipated return to the famed production company.

Finally, Some Visuals on Burton’s ‘Wonderland’

March 5, 2010, is probably one of the bigger movie release dates I’m looking forward to. Specifically because that’s the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The “remake” (I wouldn’t call it that… at all), much like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is now based heavily on the book this time. If you’ve not read the book, definitely check it out. But that being said, Alice in Wonderland is a very different book than the Disney adaptation of yore. The cast is the very familiar Burton crew, but joining them this time is Anne Hathaway; In addition, a few other big names also join as notable additions. A complete cast list is on IMDB.com.

USA Today dropped some wicked pictures from the upcoming film today, and they capture all Burton’s signature Dali-esque surrealism. Check them out over there. There’s a few that look absolutely gorgeous.
