Weitz is in the middle of negotiations to helm The Gardener with Eric Eason penning the script. The picture is about a hard-working immigrant who lives in Los Angeles and his efforts to protect his son (Variety). No word yet on who else will jump on board for this picture, but more information will surely come within the coming months.

“There was little question last week that the second chapter of Stephenie Meyers’ supernatural romance drama The Twilight Saga: New Moon with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson would open big, but after setting a new midnight record on Thursday and a new single day record on Friday with $72.7 million, it has left even the most jaded critic of the franchise flabbergasted at how well the movie performed. In its first three days, New Moon grossed an estimated $140.7 million, the third biggest opening weekend domestically of all time with a per-site average of just under $35,000 per venue, the fourth largest per-theater average for a wide release. The movie also surpassed the previous November opening record for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by a wide margin. Essentially, it grossed almost exactly twice the opening weekend gross of the first Twilight exactly a year ago. The first installment went on to gross roughly $190 million, but with so much clear frontloading to Friday, it’s difficult to tell how well the sequel will hold up compared to the original movie. With Thanksgiving and the holidays coming up, it should be able to at least get to $300 million in its theatrical run, which once again puts it up against the “Harry Potter” franchise, the sixth installment which is currently the #2 movie of the year with $301.8 million. On top of that, the Chris Weitz-directed epic took in $118.1 million internationally in 25 markets for a total global take in just three days of $258.8 million.”

Responding to the fans of THE TWILIGHT SAGA, Summit Entertainment announced today that it will re-release TWILIGHT, the first film in the franchise, at select theatres nationwide on November 19th, a day before the highly anticipated release of the movie’s sequel, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON. Despite the first film already being on DVD, fans across the nation have been calling out to see the film once again on the big screen and the studio is honoring their request.

Summit is working with exhibitors to screen TWILIGHT one night only with screenings in the evening just before THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON arrives in theatres. Select theatres will offer tickets at a reduced price.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON directed by Chris Weitz and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will be released November 20, 2009. In the film, the romance between mortal and vampire soars to a new level as Bella Swan (Stewart) delves deeper into the mysteries of the supernatural world she yearns to become part of—only to find herself in greater peril than ever before. Following Edward Cullen’s (Pattinson) departure from Forks, Washington, Bella discovers his image comes to her whenever she puts herself in jeopardy. In time Bella’s frozen heart is gradually thawed by her budding relationship with Jacob Black (Lautner) who has a supernatural secret of his own.

“Twilight Saga: New Moon” is howling right into theaters very soon, and that means that tickets for the midnight screenings are already on sale. If you have not purchased your ticket, you can go right here on Fandango and grab them while you still can.

Today though brings us The Vampire’s Assistant, that was originally titled Cirque Du Freak, but was changed to further emphasize the fact that vampires appear in the film. Freak so far seems to be a lot of fun, and a bit refreshing in comparison to a lot of what’s out in the market currently.

The film opens in theaters October 23rd and is directed by Paul Weitz (brother to New Moon‘s director Chris Weitz), whose previous credits include About A Boy and In Good Company.

The Vampire’s Assistant contains Salma Hayek as the bearded lady, John C. Reilly as the lead vampire, Patrick Fugit as the snake boy, Willem Dafoe as another vampire and Ken Wattanabe.

Some of the highlights: Johnny Depp appeared with Tim Burton to talk about Alice in Wonderland. Peter Jackson spoke about The Hobbit. James Cameron screened 25 minutes of footage from Avatar. Robert Downey Jr. doubled his pleasure by talking about two upcoming films: Sherlock Holmes and Iron Man 2, Clips were shown from Heath Ledger’s last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. And, of course, stars from some of our favorite TV shows (Lost, Big Bang Theory, Dexter) stopped by to discuss the upcoming seasons.

But what drew the biggest crowd was the New Moon press conference and panel. Twilight fans camped outside for more than 24 hours to get a chance to be in the room as stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson, along with director Chris Weitz, answered questions and introduced clips. Or should I say, answered some questions. Summit, the studio behind the Twilight films, told reporters before the press conference that there were to be no questions regarding the actors’ personal lives. One reporter did slip one in, though, asking Stewart about her off-screen chemistry with Pattinson. Her reaction: “Are you kidding me?” Maybe it’s a good thing Lautner was sitting between the two of them. I mean, we wouldn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea, now would we?

Two new clips were shown, and Weitz talked about the song selections for the soundtrack. Unfortunately, Pattinson won’t be in this one. But my fingers are still crossed for an achingly beautiful and romantic track on the Remember Me soundtrack. So, for those of you who made it into Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center – are your ears still ringing from all the squealing?

Speaking of the Twilight cast, news broke this week that Nikki Reed is dating Paris Latsis, ex-fiancé of that other Paris. The couple reportedly met six months ago, and their families have met. Apparently she likes men with a European flair. Here’s hoping it works out for her.

And there were rumors that Jon Gosselin went from soon-to-be-ex-wife Kate to Star reporter Kate Major. Gosselin denies the claims, and Major has since left her job. Wonder what Hailey Glassman has to say about that?

To the general public, these two events would seem totally unrelated. LeAnn Rimes and her husband, Dean Sheremet, have separated. So have Eddie Cibrian and his wife, Brandi Glanville. But true gossip gurus know that there were big rumors of Cibrian and Rimes having an affair while filming a movie for Lifetime. Maybe it was more than acting …

Entertainment Weekly just broke the news that assumes that Chris Weitz the director of the second film (New Moon), may not be enjoying himself already so early into pre-production.  That being said, it will be interesting to see what those rabid Twilight fans will think of this news.

Chris Weitz whose acting credits includes the fantastic Chuck and Buck, has previously directed such films as About a Boy and last years underrated The Golden Compass. Weitz is a previous Oscar nominee for his screenplay of the Nick Hornby adaptation About A Boy.

Hey guys,

There’s been a lot of worry and speculation on the boards lately, and I want to let you know what’s going on.

First of all, like you, I’m sad that Catherine is not continuing on with us for New Moon. I’m going to miss her, not just as a brilliant director, but also as a friend. She has such a distinct, authentic voice that did amazing things for Twilight. I’m looking forward to every movie she does in the future.

And she didn’t leave us empty handed. We still get the benefits of her amazing casting and the beautiful visual world she created. This foundation puts us in a good place for New Moon.

Summit Films is moving forward with a new director for New Moon. They’ve asked Chris Weitz, director of American Pie, About a Boy, and The Golden Compass, to join us, and I am very pleased to announce that he’s agreed to be a part of our Twilight world. I’ve had the chance to talk to Chris, and I can tell you that he is excited by the story and eager to keep the movie as close to the book as possible. He is also very aware of you, the fans, and wants to keep you all extremely happy. (Torches and pitchforks are not going to be necessary.)

I’m excited to work with Chris and I think he brings a lot to the table, not the least of which for me is that he wrote the screenplay for and directed one of my favorite movies of all time, About a Boy. I’m really looking forward to seeing his vision for New Moon.
