Actor Brad Dourif’s long and storied career seems to be summed up in one movie title: Child’s Play. While the voice of Chucky from the Child’s Play series might be forever ingrained into our consciousness, it was his work as the serial killer in the under-appreciated Exorcist III that interested feature film director Brian Metcalf for casting Dourif in his debut, Fading of the Cries.

Brad Dourif took a few minutes away from his busy schedule to briefly talk with Killer Film about Fading of the Cries, which opens soon, and that persistent Halloween 3D.

Jon: While fans know and love your genre work, I’ve enjoyed seeing you in stuff like Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. Do you ever tire of genre work?

Brad Dourif: Oh, well thank you. No. Work is work, you know. I mean there’s differences in the way you approach things, and every film is an event in a way. There’s different styles that provide new ways of doing things. I like genre stuff.

Jon: When did Fading of the Cries come to you and what got you excited about doing it?

Brad Dourif: Well, it was a couple of years ago actually, and it was just a job really. They were putting together some people at the agency and my schedule was open. The script was neat and there was some real anger in it, some good dialogue, so I did it.

Jon: Director Brian Metcalf was heavy influenced by other fantasy films and your character of Mathias feels like a homage to Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Talk about your approach to Mathias.

Brad Dourif: You know, he’s simpler than Wormtongue. He’s angrier because he lost his wife and he’s looking for revenge. That’s as clear as it is for Mathias, were as Wormtongue was way more complex. Everything is very direct with Mathias. So, I guess, it’s the fighting that was different between the two (laughs).

Jon: How was director Brian Metcalf on his first feature film?

Brad Dourif: He was good. We had to work quickly and I think that was a difficult adjustment for him. We got through it and he got better and better as time went on. He had some ideas on how he was going to do it, and it didn’t work. Everything was smooth sailing, actually considering how difficult it was to film it all.

Jon: Can you explain some of these difficulties? The film is interesting since it’s an indie with over 1000 visual effects…

Brad Dourif: Yeah, well, he decided the best way to do it, was to block it straight through in his head from the beginning. When we were shooting it was apparent that wasn’t going to work that way.

Jon: Did he allow any improvisation or due to the time crunch it just wouldn’t work?

Brad Dourif: No, no. I knew all my lines before coming to the set, and we just shot the script the way it was. Now, we did have some blocking changes and what not, whatever made it work best, like the fighting choreography.

Jon: With films like Lord of the Rings and Priest 3D, does it get any easier working in heavy FX films, or is this just a great opportunity to give a PSA for kids to join the theater?

Brad Dourif: No, potentially, some things are easy and if they are just let them be easy. The longer you work, the more you know. There’s things no matter how easy or difficult, you should work hard on. Visual effects-driven films aren’t always easy.

Jon: Finally, Dimension Films has announced Halloween 3D (here) and you’re credited on IMDb to return as Sheriff Brackett. Any word if this is true or not?

Brad Dourif: No I don’t. They called me a long time ago and that was it. They canceled the version the originally were going to do for Halloween 3 because they just didn’t like its direction. And Zombie isn’t coming back, so I don’t know anything on it.

Fading of the Cries opens July 8th in LA and NYC.

However, Horror Bid is hearing that development on the film may finally be moving forward. In fact, they’re hearing rumor that production could begin later this year. The film will apparently be called Child’s Play, and is said to have Brad Dourif return and voice everybody’s favorite Good Guy Doll. Writer Don Mancini (who wrote the original films) wrote the script (You can check out details here), and is said to lose the comedic elements of the original franchise to be a straight up horror film.

However, this should be taken strictly as a rumor for right now.

Update: Represenatives at MGM are telling Shock Til You Drop the Child’s Play remake is NOT filming later year, and that The Hobbit, Robocop, and Bond 23 are the studio’s top priority at the moment.

Yes, with just about every other horror film, Hollywood is looking to remake Tom Holland’s Child’s Play. The film was supposedly going to happen soon, but news on has been scarce. However, writer Don Mancini opens up to Screen Junkies about what we might see in the film.

The biggest question that Mancini answers is why a remake is being made. “I’m personally open to other things but I think that’s what the studio wants, because this movie (Seed of Chucky) didn’t do very well so I think the feeling is that Chucky’s viability, his future is in the more straightforward horror vein”, he said. Mancini does give some good news that it won’t be remake exactly, but more of a reboot, and lose the comedic approach of the previous two installments. “I think we’ll reboot it in the sense that it will just be more conventionally scary and it will only be Chucky and we won’t have Tiffany and Glen, but it won’t necessarily be a strict remake”, he said.

Mancini has spoke about taking a different approach to how Chucky came to life, and it’s possible those ideas could be added into the film. “It’s one of the things we’re talking about. I can’t say too much about it but one of the things we’re alluding to, it’s one of the things that we’re talking about”, he said. Mancini wants to keep the mythology of Charles Lee Ray, but also bring in a psychological feel into the remake. Mancini also wants this remake to go in a “very disturbing direction” as opposed to the previous two films’ comedic tone. There’s also a possibility the Good Guy dolls will get a redesign, although, only a slightly. Brad Dourif could also return to voice Chucky.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for a great portion of us. The holidays are right around the corner, weather is finally cooling down, and we all are picking out costumes for the 31rst. Halloween is right around the corner, and that means horror movies are seeping out on every other cable movie channel aching to be seen. Forget their lists of typical films, it’s time to check out what films this costumed geek loves to freak out over. Personally I’ve got a soft spot for the horror flicks that came out in the eighties, so let’s center on which ones I completely dig that you should check out:

The Evil Dead (1981)

It’s Sam Raimi in his horror hayday along with budding actor Bruce Campbell. How could you not want to see this and get a taste of the good stuff?

Creepshow (1982)

Five stories told under the creative vision of George A. Romero that includes Leslie Nielsen as a wonderful bad guy? Sold.

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter struts his stuff in this eighties remake and takes full advantage of the special effects that are sadly not used so often today. Don’t worry, that grizzly beard on Kurt Russell is not a special effect.

Fright Night (1985)

Tom Holland in the eighties to me seem to barely do any wrong at all, and this is one of those wonderful right’s. What I consider an attractive Chris Sarandon, vampires, cheesy goodness and some music composed by Brad Fiedel, you bet your ass you should sit down and watch this.

The Fly (1986)

It’s a wonderful story wrapped in great effects with awesome acting. If you haven’t seen this yet, then I don’t know what’s wrong with you.

Child’s Play (1988)

Oh Chris Sarandon, I can’t escape your grasp of awesomeness back in the day. Yes, I still hate the Chucky doll and though it freaks the hell out of me, I still watch it.
