Based on the Jim Thompson novel of the same name, The Killer Inside Me is about Lou Ford (Casey Affleck, Gone Baby Gone), who is a deputy sheriff of a West Texas town, but he’s also insane. The film takes place during the 1950′s, and it does a great job conveying this, from wardrobe to cars that were driven, and even the dialogue. Since the film is told from the perspective of Lou Ford, it seems to be a little all over the place. This is something that is not surprising since Ford is nuts.

Chester Coway (Ned Beatty, Rudy) is a contractor who’s son, Elmer (Jay R. Ferguson), falls in love with with a prostitute, Joyce Lakeland (Jessica Alba). Chester wants Joyce to be thrown out of town, and asks Lou to take care of it. Lou falls in love with Joyce, but does he really? We’re not really sure , but that’s the idea. The story is very disjointed due to the fact that it’s told from the mind of a crazy killer. One night Lou gets Joyce and Elmer together and comes up with a plan so they can run off together, but he has other plans the night of the meeting. He brutally murders both of them, but covers it up. Howard Hendricks (Simon Backer, TV’s The Mentalist) comes to town to find out who committed the murders. As the story unravels, so does Ford’s mind. There are more murders along the way and Ford goes further into insanity.

The director, Michael Winterbottom, and the casting director, have put together a fantastic cast. Besides Affleck and Ned Beatty, Elias Koteas plays Joe Rothman, the head of the union that is feuding with Beatty’s Conway. Fantastic character actor, Tom Bower plays Sheriff Bob Maples, Ford’s boss. Kate Hudson is Amy Stanton, Ford’s fiancé. And there is a great cameo by Bill Pullman. The only miscast in the movie is Alba. She just really seems out of place and wasn’t able to hold her own here.

The movie was violent, well acted, beautifully shot, and a bit of a mess. It is very reminiscent of American Psycho where we know how crazy the main character is, but it’s fun to see his journey. It’s not a perfect movie, and may not even be a good movie, but the acting it good enough to warrant a viewing.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Being big Kevin Smith fans, what was your initial reaction when you heard he was doing a movie not written by himself?

Donny: I was skeptical. Part of what excites me about Kevin’s movies is his sense of humor. I’ve heard critics compare his humor to that of an adolescent, and I don’t understand why that’s a problem. I’m quickly getting tired of fans and critics that feel they have to stop enjoying things they did when they were younger in order to justify their own existence.

Jon: Well, yeah I was skeptic too, only because I feel he has a voice and why would he do someone else’s work? But if he could take established characters like Daredevil and Green Arrow and craft interesting stories, who not this film? Oh, right, he didn’t write this. Nervous energy…

Explain your first impressions on the Green Band, then Red Band trailer for Cop Out?

Jon: My first thoughts were “wow, that doesn’t look funny”. I understand it’s sometimes hard to cut a trailer, and also we shouldn’t really judge a film based on the trailer, but Cop Out looked weak, and very un-Kevin Smith. In the Green Band trailer, you have to understand the limits of what they can and cannot show, but jokes fell flat and Kevin Smith’s name wasn’t pushed.

I guess there was a solid reason to pimp the buddy-cop aspect to the film over it being a new Kevin Smith film, since his films don’t open with huge numbers, but again, I was saddend to shrug it off. Now, I remember when Donny raved about the Red Band trailer, I figured the best stuff was in the film, so I didn’t seek it out, and instead, held onto my fleeting anticipation for the comedy.

Donny: I absolutely despised the Green Band trailer. I thought the jokes were flat and the acting seemed forced. The Red Band however, I loved. I got a kick out of seeing Bruce Willis wax with the vulgarity.

What’s your review of Cop Out?

Donny: I thoroughly enjoyed the flick. Being a huge fan of the buddy cop movies that dominated the ’80s box office, I found it refreshing to see someone take a stab at bringing back the old school vibe back instead of focusing on the gritty, MTV-influenced, flash cut heavy flicks today’s generation is used to.

I know that there are a lot of Kevin Smith’s fans that are going to compare this flick to his previous ones, and I don’t want to do that. I’m glad he jumped ship for a bit to try his hand at something new, and I’m also pretty impressed with the outcome. I’m not a fan of Tracy Morgan, but that didn’t stop me from having a great time with this flick. I found the jokes funny, the film felt like it was made in the decade of excess, and I absolutely loved the Beverly Hills Cop-like music.

While I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did Smith’s View Askew productions, I did enjoy the flick enough to spend coin on the Blu-ray when it’s released, and I’m thinking about checking it out again in the theatre as well.

Jon: It happens almost every time we do these dual reviews, folks, Donny and I vastly disagree. Being such a huge Kevin Smith fan, one of the few voices in comedy I admire and trust, I cannot believe WB and as well as Smith, would allow for a film where they take away his best attribute: his writing. It’s easy to say that Kevin Smith hasn’t really became a “visual” director, but his directing skills went fine with his writing. It’s all about the dialogue and jokes when it comes to Smith and with Clerks II and Zack and Miri, he’s found some sentimentality amongst the penis and poop jokes. If anything, he’s becoming a better, mature voice in writing, yet Cop Out is like taking the ball out of Adrian Peterson’s hands and making him the punter for the Vikings. Uh, why?

Because screenwriters Robb and Mark Cullen aren’t Kevin Smith.

For football fans, one knows when it’s crunch time, you never take the ball out of your best players hands, and Cop Out does just that, forcing the film to allow Smith handle just directing, a talent that isn’t his M.O. So, the film feels flat, the jokes roll off conventionally, and it’s all in line for Smith’s worst film. Cop Out makes Jersey Girl look like Chasing Amy.

I admire the attempt for that feeling of the long-gone buddy cop films of the 80’s, but if I can finish the joke before they do, then the film isn’t funny. Strangely, since Smith edited the film as well, it sagged a lot towards the end, perhaps from being overly long. A lot of the subplots didn’t have the payoff needed, like the confrontations between Jason Lee and Bruce Willis as stepfather and father, just really went nowhere. Speaking of nowhere, the scenes with Adam Brody and Kevin Pollack were horrible. WB could have saved a few dollars, hired an up-and-coming second unit action director and got the same results.

Now, please, remember I’m a huge Smith fan just as much as Donny, but Cop Out didn’t deliver. Did I expect unrealistic expectations? No, I knew he was attempting something different, but could he have at least gave the script a better once over to make some jokes funnier? I just can’t share Donny’s enthusiasm for Cop Out.

Should he go back to View Askew?

Jon: As Zack and Miri Make a Porno proved, he doesn’t need to go back to that universe yet. Again, Cop Out‘s biggest issue was prevented Smith to do what he does best: write. I fully expect the next Smith film to be better and good, as I won’t jump off his bandwagon with this. Smith is insanely funny, and I’m sure he has a slew of new ideas outside of Jay and Silent Bob ready for us all. But if those fail, like I felt Cop Out failed, I will welcome back those characters in a heartbeat.

Donny: I think he should do whatever makes him happy. I haven’t been disappointed with any of his flicks thus far.

Grade?

Donny’s: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Jon’s: Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

His flicks are the type of films that stick with you for years after the first viewing. Sure, Smith isn’t know for his visual flair, but I’d argue that the dialogue and pitch perfect timing make him a director that knows how to use his strengths to his advantage. With the Kevin Smith 3-Movie Collection we get the chance to see a few of his flicks on blu-ray with some pretty solid extras tagged on for good measure.

Clerks

The Flick:

I remember the first time I saw Clerks, my buddy Charles invited me over to check out this indie flick that he had rented. Somehow or another he had seen the flick on the big screen (Lafayette, La is a small town), and decided that everyone he knew had to see it as soon as possible. He kept telling us that the characters in the movie were exactly like us, but with thick Jersey accents instead of thick Cajun accents. So I decided to head over to his apartment to check out this flick that had clearly affected my friend deeply, also I was broke and figured he’d have beer in the fridge. Once I got to his place, and everyone settled in to watch this movie that was supposedly going to change our lives, I soon realized that Charles was right. These characters were just like us. They spoke like us (mostly), they talked about Star Wars frequently (I still do this), but most of all they spoke to us. To the generation of slackers that had embraced the grunge era, but hadn’t completely given up on 80s metal either. The generation of miscreants that worked dead-end jobs because it was easier than actually deciding to do something.

When the movie was over and the credits rolled, I couldn’t get it out of my head. The next morning I got dressed, called in sick for work, headed out to Home Video, and rented Clerks. I watched it twice back to back, and then at least 4 more times before bringing the tape back to the video store. I couldn’t believe that a black and white movie that I had never heard of was having such an affect on me. I was majoring in English at the time while working a dead-end job, but wasn’t really taking it seriously. So I decided to take a few art classes, and then changed my major to Media (we didn’t have a film school). I did this because for the first time in my life I realized that it was possible to make movies that spoke to people, real people, people that I knew, and that not all movies needed to be grand statements or blow up buildings in order to truly connect with an audience. I was a film fanatic before Clerks, but because of Clerks my life now revolves around film (don’t worry; I etch out a little time for the wife).

The

Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

The audio was clear, but it’s nothing special, which is fine because I don’t think anyone is watching this flick for it’s amazing sound. Clerks isn’t the most amazing looking movie, but that’s part of it’s charm. So while it doesn’t look amazing on blu-ray, it still looks better than ever, and that’s a good thing for any fan of the flick.

Special Features

Theatrical Version: This version of the flick features the commentary circa ’95 featuring Smith, Mewes, Mos, and more! This is my favorite cut of the flick and the commentary track is totally worth listening to.

The First Cut: This cut of the flick is the raw and original one that smith first showed the world. It’s fun to watch and while I have seen it more than once I still prefer the theatrical cut. The commentary on here is also equally as good as on the theatrical cut.

Oh, What A Lovely Tea Party: The Making Of Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back: A new feature specific only to the blu-ray, this behind-the-scenes documentary is a lot of fun. I don’t know why it’s on the Clerks disc but I don’t care because it was pretty darn funny.

Introduction By Kevin Smith: A new introduction was recorded specifically for the blu-ray disc and it’s done in typical Smith fashion.

There are a slew of other features on here, but all of them were previously released.

The Flick: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Chasing Amy

The Flick:

I didn’t think that another film could affect me the way that Kevin Smith’s film Clerks did. Clerks showed me that anyone could make a film, even with limited funds, and a cast of unknown actors. Chasing Amy showed me that a filmmaker could make a film with a soul of its own that speaks fan to boys/girls as well as people that know nothing about comic books. Chasing Amy was the first romantic comedy (can I call it that?) that I caught in the theater no less than 5 times, and that’s not counting the numerous times I’ve seen it on DVD.

I think that most comic book fans dream of creating their own comic book. Comics are similar to films because both are visual mediums used to tell a story, only filmmakers seem to get laid a little more often than comic book creators. So the fact that Smith based a whole movie around indie comic creators Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) and Banky Edwards (Jason Lee) was a sign that not only did this director really care about comic books, he cared enough to base an entire movie around two comic book creators. Also, he was able to snag the godfather of comics, Stan Lee to appear in the flick as himself. An unforgettable role for Stan Lee, it allowed him to stretch his acting muscles as apposed to just making a brief cameo as a door man or some other such character. Kevin Smith understands the fan boy culture because he’s a fan himself, a fan that cares deeply about the subject matter he’s writing about. And just when you think you know what’s coming up next, he throws a beautiful love story into the mix, and does it in a way that I personally had never seen done before. His characters talk about the same kinds of things that real people talk about; they have faults, fears, and are always memorable down to the smallest role in the movie. There is no better example of this than in Chasing Amy.

I remember watching the credits roll after my first viewing of the flick. I sat there in the seat trying to take in all that I had just seen. Had I just watched a date movie that I could relate to, that didn’t take the easy way out the way most movies in this genre do? A movie that my girlfriend could enjoy, but had enough stuff in there that only a geek like me would catch? I remember asking myself these questions. The next night I rushed to the theater to get another look at this film, and it played better on the second viewing than it did on the first, so when I was leaving the multiplex and met up with a friend of mine that was going to see it for the first time, I decided to catch it for a third time. Once again, after the credits rolled I was just as excited as I was after the first viewing. In fact, I enjoyed Chasing Amy so much that I caught it at least two more times before it ended its run at the multiplex.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

Like Clerks the audio on this flick isn’t jaw dropping, but it does sound better than it ever has before. Unlike Clerks, Chasing Amy looks quite a bit better on blu-ray than it did on my standard definition DVD. The colors popped off the screen. There are a few spots with a little bit of grain in them, but for the most part the transfer is solid.

Special Features

Commentary: Smith and Mos provide an interesting track that as always is a pleasure to listen to.

Tracing Amy: A documentary that chronicles the making of the flick. Totally worth checking out.

Was It Something I Said: This is a conversation between Kevin and Joey that is really cool. I enjoyed listening to them talk about that time in their lives. Another feature worth watching.

10 Years Later Q&A: The cast gets together and answers questions about the flick. This was one of my favorite features on the disc.

Everything else on the disc has been previously released on other versions of the flick.

The Flick: Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

The Flick:

You can never have to much Jay and Silent Bob. One of the main reasons I love Smith’s work so much is because of these two characters. No matter how colorful their language gets, or how mischievous they get, their hearts are always in the right place. These are bad-boy characters that can connect with both the rebel in all of us as well as the geek. So the fact that these two got their own movie put a huge smile on my face. Also, pretty much every character in View Askew universe is in the flick. How cool is that?

This is a film that plays just as well the after the tenth viewing as it does the first, maybe even better, and that to me is the test. If I can watch a movie multiple times without it getting old the filmmaker has done his/her job right. Another huge contributing factor to the re-watch-ability of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is the fact that Jason Mewes is front and center. It’s hard to not love Mewes, he is comfortable on screen, easy to relate to, and really fucking funny. I can’t wait until Smith decides to put his old pal back into a leading-man position. I’m extremely happy about Smith’s decision to cast Seth Rogen in his comedy Zack and Miri Make A Porno, but at the same time I’d have loved to have seen Mewes in another title role. I think both Mewes and Rogen have that everyman quality that works in their favor, plus both of them have impeccable timing. I guess what I’m trying to say is that in my humble opinion Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is a love letter to the movie geek, and one of the most exciting comedies made by Smith. In todays market of throwaway films Smith’s flicks are a breath of fresh air. So if you haven’t already seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back or any of Smith’s other flicks, then do yourself a favor and check them out ASAP. On the other hand if your a fan of Smith’s work, then hurry up, and watch them all again. Oh, and they say the F-word a lot in this flick, I’m just saying.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video

The audio on this disc is pretty solid. There’s a little more action than in the previous two flicks and it shows in the audio track. The video transfer looks pretty good as well on this disc, it’s not the most amazing blu-ray in my collection, but it sure does look better than on my old copy of the flick. The colors are brighter and scenes like the one where the hotties are jumping through the laser beams look phenomenal.

Special Features

Besides the Commentary Track there isn’t a singe feature worth checking out on this disc. Bare bones folks, WTF?

The Flick: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

Welcome to New Release Tuesday on Killer Film for November 17th! You can order from Amazon by clicking on the cover art, which will help you with any holiday buying you might be starting.

Star Trek

I didn’t buy into this film prior to seeing it, and then when I did, wow we’re we all blown away. Great storytelling, acting, and fits nicely into the Trekverse without disrupting any time lines you liked from the Original Series. A must see! (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy

Bruno

Second by second, the funniest film of the year, even if the story is a carbon copy of Borat. It’s so un-PC and yet, smart about its points, and I laughed so hard, I think I pulled something at the screening. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Rent

Thirst

Vampires are huge right now, thanks to True Blood and Twilight, but don’t let that sway you away from this new film from Oldboy director, Chan-wook Park. Reviews have been mixed, but I’m stoked regardless, because he is always interesting. (Formats: DVD only) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Rent

My Sister’s Keeper

If you’re in the mood to feel glum and cry, here’s a good offering, from the people behind The Notebook. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

Limits of Control

This existential spy film from Jim Jarmusch is a bore from start to finish. Guess you gotta be a Jarmusch fan, but Isaach de Bankole is incredibly good. (Formats: DVD only) Jon says: Avoid Donny says: Buy

Humpday

This little indie comedy gained a lot of attention for being funny, as well as being well-acted and written. We missed it, sadly, but heard good things all around. (Formats: DVD only) Jon says: Rent Donny says: Rent

New to TV

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: It’s a Very Sunny Christmas (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD)

Two of Kevin Smith’s finest films finally get their Blu Ray release on November 17th. The films are being released by Miramax, so no Chasing Amy from Criterion. Interestingly, the long rumored Chasing Amy X, in support of its 10th Anniversary, seems to be nixed, but expect “over 4 hours of exclusive Blu Ray content”. Either way, that’s a huge cause to rejoice.

Also, on the 17th of November is Clerks on Blu Ray, with new material running over 90 minutes. No word if the extras from the great Clerks X 3-disc DVD set will be ported over or not.

But alas, we finally get a new Chasing Amy disc…in high definition no less.

“This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know up front this is not a love story.”

The above statement quoted from the Roscoe Lee Browne-like narrator in the opening moments of Marc Webb’s directorial debut tells the audience right away that this is not the typical fluffy romantic comedy that they are expecting or have been accustomed to. In fact, the film should not even be classified as an entry in the sappy sub-genre as it is not a film about romance. It is a film about the consequences of the deluded fantasies one conjures up when romance is simply not there.

This post modern “anti love” story sets viewers up with the classic and archetypal “boy meets girl” scenario. A greeting card writer named Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) becomes instantly smitten with his boss’ assistant named Summer (Zooey Deschanel) after she expresses the same adoration for The Smiths on an awkward elevator ride. Unfortunately, this is enough reasoning for Tom to think he can build a strong relationship with Summer despite the fact that she is quite vocal about keeping their connection very casual. As one could suspect, it doesn’t end well and through non-linear sequences, viewers take a journey with a heart-broken Tom as he reflects on what went wrong in the relationship.

Considering the fact that this summer has disappointed fans with catastrophic comic book spin offs and lacklustre blockbuster sequels, it comes as a pleasant surprise to admit that 500 Days of Summer proves to be the best film to see this season. In this Chasing Amy meets Shopgirl tale, screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber dissect Tom’s realistic trajectory of the breakup so effortlessly that it’s clear to see that their real-life tales of woe brought this film to life. (Jenny Beckman wouldn’t contest to that!) Although, it is through Webb’s innovative and quirky direction that makes this film truly stand out from the crowd. From the film’s hilariously off-putting post coitus musical dance routine featuring Hall and Oates “You Make My Dreams,” to the heart-rendering yet imaginative split screen sequence simultaneously showing Tom’s reality and his larger than life expectations at a chance encounter with his ex, only forebodes many homages of Webb’s directing style for years to come.

However, much praise has to go out to Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel who play the dumb struck lovers. Lesser actors would have made the characters as unlikable as they are written down in the script, but Tom’s unyielding desperation and Summer’s utter lack of empathy both come across as equally endearing traits and it’s because of that why scenes of the two playing the “penis” game are hard to look away from instead of being just cringe-worthy. Finally, Zooey Deschanel’s kooky behaviour serves a purpose in this film and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is finally able to show mainstream audiences unfamiliar with his turns in Mysterious Skin and Brick that he can be a leading man. The chemistry between these two actors is through the roof, which is impressive to convey considering the film is ironically about the lack of chemistry between the characters.

It is clearly evident 500 Days of Summer is a well thought out and unbelievably clever film. Unfortunately its original concept proves to be far too clever for the curious mainstream audience its bound to attract and because of that, the film at times is forced to ironically fall into the conventions of the genre its giving the middle finger to in able to maintain the attention spans of viewers that get some empty sense of enjoyment from watching Kate Hudson/Matthew McConaughey “rom coms.”

Yes, despite the film’s painstakingly real emotions it’s able to evoke, it falls victim to the “glamorized reality” it has created for its audience. Viewers will not be surprised to see two wise-cracking sidekicks, a sarcastic voice of reason, and a devastating twist to the film’s protagonist exaggerated for a full theatrical effect. Even the film’s finale screams of blissful hopefulness only witnessed in romantic comedies. If 500 Days of Summer had focused more of its energy on the bleakness and pain of the breakup rather than pleasing its audience members that require a happy ending, it would have been a perfect dissection of a modern day relationship.

500 Days of Summer proves that not all anti “rom coms” have to reside in the Judd Apatow universe to be truly successful. One doesn’t have to be a pompous film snob or into the Spoon Pixies to understand and enjoy this well made film. If you can recognize the power of “twenties angst” and how it can consume a relationship, then you can definitely appreciate this amusing and bittersweet drama.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

It’s that time of year again….V-Day. For women in relationships, it’s the happiest day of the year. It’s a day where most women don’t have to do much other than gush over the amounts of money their men are spending on them. For men, it’s a dreaded day full of anxiety because of the unnaturally high expectations bestowed upon them. They have to make sure everything is just right and if it’s not, they will never live it down. However, it’s all worth it in the end, because if they get everything right, the night is usually met with an extremely romantic “pay-off.” (In a way, Valentine’s Day is a day of legal prostitution if you ask me.)

Since times are hard right now with the recession, every penny spent on this day for lovers should be spent for both partners’ enjoyment. Going to the movies has always been a costly date and shelling out money for one-dimensional and conventional romantic comedies such as He’s Just Not into You and Confessions of a Shopaholic is not something men will be particularly excited for. (Also, he might still be shell shocked from the experience of having to go watch the Sex and the City two and a half hour epic piece of crap last year.)

Why not watch something both of you can enjoy? So here’s a list of movies both men and women can get a kick out of instead of going to watch the numerous clichéd rom coms starring someone from “Must See TV.”

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

This latest effort from Kevin Smith is probably one of the most realistic romantic comedies (aside from the actual porno) I have ever witnessed before in my lifetime and it was really refreshing to see a movie with real dialogue and real characters. It’s not a movie that is riddled with tongue in cheek voiceovers and has characters buying and wearing expensive fashion labels from their freelance writing salary. It’s a modern day When Harry Met Sally and it makes Seth Rogen into a very believable romantic lead despite the constant profane things coming out of his mouth. I’d rather watch a romantic comedy that refers to Amazon.com bought vibrators and period panties over Prada any day.

True Romance

Almost every one of my close guy friends have stated that True Romance is their ultimate favourite romantic movie. Helmed by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, this is an essential guy’s movie that is driven by romance, yet is full of kills and action. I mean, what is more romantic than watching a guy fall in love with a hooker, kill her pimp, steal his coke and then go on the run together “Bonnie and Clyde” style? Well if that doesn’t sell her…tell her Brad Pitt is in it. (Leave out the pothead part though.)

Out of Sight

Out of Sight is one of my favourite movies of all time and I find it very surprising that a lot of people have not seen it yet. I own the VHS, the DVD, the soundtrack and the huge vintage poster that I always get compliments for. (Thanks Jay!) The chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez is so mind-blowing that it’s surprising that George Clooney didn’t become a real-life ex-husband for J.Lo after this. Full of great performances, actors and the most sensual and homaged love scene without nudity in history, it’s a movie destined to be enjoyed by couples.

Shaun of the Dead

The term “rom-zom-com” was helmed after this 2004 now cult classic arrived on the horror scene. It’s a romantic comedy with zombies….need I say more?

The Best Man

This 1999 movie resurrected the career of Morris Chestnut and received great reviews, yet it was hardly seen from the general public. Now that majority of the film’s stars are now budding stars themselves, (Terrence Howard, Harold Perrineau and Taye Diggs) it’s a movie that should be revisited and watched with a significant other. Giving away the “conflict” in the movie would do you a disservice, but all I can say is that this romantic movie was made for men and deals with conflicts and moral dilemmas men go through in relationships. It’s as insightful to men as an episode of Sex and the City is to women.

Chasing Amy

Kevin Smith just knows how to write honest and genuine romance and he nailed it out the park with Chasing Amy. Although, I would not usually recommend to watch this movie on Valentine’s Day because the ending is so depressing and bittersweet, I think it’s a great movie for men to watch to teach them to get over their own insecurities. Girls, the perfect time to show this is if you have just told your man “your number.”

One Fine Day

This is my all time favourite romantic movie and the only reason why it’s not higher on the list is because everything about it says “stereotypical chick flick.” It is however a chick flick that’s entertaining for both genders (especially divorcees) and is a humorous watch. Unlike other gushy rom coms, Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney spend majority of the movie insulting each other and it never gets old. If you must face the “romantic comedy” gun, this film will be quick and painless.

As Good as it Gets

I love this movie. Almost everybody I know loves this movie….and just like Jerry Maguire, I can’t exactly tell you why. If I see it on TV, even if it’s on Peachtree, I have to watch it. Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson deserved both of their Oscars and that line, “You make me want to be a better man” is a line that continues to bring tears to women’s’ eyes and curse words to men’s’ mouths for not being able to think of the line first.

The Mexican

Brad Pitt. Horseface…I mean Julia Roberts. James Gandofini. Murder, intrigue and 20 minutes of actual romance displayed on screen. A perfect romantic comedy for any man.

Friday the 13th (remake)

It may not be a romantic movie per say, but if you’re going to see a movie this Valentine’s Day, this is the one to see. Plus, it’s only fair if you dragged him to see the awful He’s Just Not that into You last week. (Sorry honey!) Plus, horror films are natural aphrodisiacs.

Killerfilm.com readers, I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day. If you’re single, spend it with the friends you love and enjoy those half off martinis and for you couples out there, be creative and original and more importantly..be on a budget! It doesn’t matter if you can’t afford lingerie, chocolates, erotic oils and karma sutra videos. As long as you have each other, redtube.com, and an aerosol can of whipped cream, you will have a great day!

Once again, Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
