Each year, the Emmy awards honor the best on the small screen. But this year, several of the big screen’s finest took home awards.

Martin Scorsese, the legendary film director, took home the Outstanding Directing, Drama Emmy for his work on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

And several film actors and actresses were honored for their television work this past year.

Even before the Primetime Emmys broadcast, Gwyneth Paltrow was honored for her guest starring role on Fox’s Glee.

Melissa McCarthy certainly made audiences laugh at the movies this past year with her role in Bridesmaids, but it was her comedic turn on CBS’ Mike & Molly that earned her the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress, Comedy. (Which, by the way, happed to be one of the funniest presentations of the night. All of the nominees huddled together on stage, much like every beauty pageant you’ve ever seen, waiting for the winner to be announced. When McCarthy’s name was called, she received flowers and a tiara in addition to her Emmy.)

On the more serious side, Peter Dinklage was awarded the Outstanding Supporting Actor, Drama, Emmy for his work on HBO’s Game of Thrones. And it was a welcome surprise when Outstanding Lead Actor, Drama, went to Kyle Chandler for his role on Friday Night Lights. (In fact, there’s talk of a movie based on the series…)

But it was the miniseries or movies categories that showed just how many film actors do television work.

Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress, Miniseries or Movie, and Outstanding Supporting Actor, Miniseries or Movie, respectively, for their work in HBO’s Mildred Pierce. And Maggie Smith was the winner in the Outstanding Supporting Actress, Miniseries or Movie, category for Downton Abbey.

I must admit – I actually enjoyed the show itself. It felt fun and fresh. It moved a steady pace that didn’t feel boring and ended right on time. Jane Lynch did a great job as first-time host.

Ty Burrell’s acceptance speech for his Outstanding Supporting Actor, Comedy, Emmy was funny and touching. And Charlie Sheen’s presentation of Outstanding Actor, Comedy, his old category, may have scored him some points when he said, I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody here from Two and a Half Men. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together, and I know you will continue to make great television.

Oh, and by the way? Kaley Cuoco gets my vote for best dressed.

Now I want to hear your thoughts. What did you think of the small screen’s big night?

He’s currently optioning another TV series titled Anger Management, and is now linked to a high profile movie, Scary Movie 5. Sources are telling Think McFly Think that Sheen has taken Harvey Weinstein up on his offer to return for the fifth installment. If anyone remembers the last film, Sheen’s character apparently died in the beginning of the film, but this series is hardly known for continuity. After all, how many times has Regina Hall died in the films?

The ‘80s were a wonderful time that offered up some of the best movies ever made, and solidified the coming-of-age-teen-comedy as a genre with some box office potential. It’s almost impossible to think about the ‘80s or teen comedies for that matter without thinking about John Hughes. Hughes’ films The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science saturated the American consciousness and forever changed the landscape of the teen movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off capped off John Hughes’ relationship with the genre, but what a way to end a relationship.

The plot is pretty simple. Ferris (Matthew Broderick) decides to play hooky and spend the day having as much fun as possible. He enlists the help of his friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) to help him spring his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) from school. The three of them catch a baseball game, go to a museum, eat at a fancy restaurant, and crash a parade. The whole time the three miscreants are enjoying themselves, their high school principal, Mr. Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) is hot on their heels and hellbent on catching Ferris in the act of truancy. Also, Ferris’s sister is wise to his antics and is doing her very best to alert her parents of his ruse.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is one of the quintessential teen movies. It has characters that experience growth and overcome obstacles. The characters are human and easy to relate to. This is the type of movie that defines a generation, and the amazing thing about John Hughes is that he basically redefined the rules of this genre not once, but four times. Add a killer soundtrack, and a scene steeling cameo by Charlie Sheen and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is an almost perfect movie. My only complaint is that could be a little longer. I would have enjoyed more of Ferris and his friends.

If you grew up in the ‘80s I’m sure this flick is in your collection, but this blu-ray release is worth the price, because it is absolutely a killer film.

The Blu-ray:

Audio/Video: The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack sounds fantastic and the video looks pretty spectacular as well. There is a little grain in some of the scenes, but overall I was impressed with the transfer.

Special Features

Getting the Class Together: Shows John Hughes going through the casting process.

The Making of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: A really cool look at John Hughes and his filmmaking process.

Who is Ferris Bueller?: A look at the character’s origins.

The World According to Ben Stein: The actor that was made famous because of this flick talks about his experience and career.

Vintage Ferris Bueller: I enjoyed this feature that shows Broderick and Ruck on set and other vintage footage.

Of course there is a Digital Copy and a DVD Copy of the flick included in this set, but that’s about the only difference from the last release. So if you already own the previous release you might not want to pick up this one.

The Flick: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Blu-ray: Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

He’s been pitching to make Major League 3 with the original cast, but one problem is that Willie Mays Hays (Wesley Snipes) is behind bars. However, Sheen spoke with Radar Online, and revealed that Tony Todd (Final Destination, The Candyman) is set to replace Snipes. “My good buddy Tony Todd will be the new Willie Mays Hayes in Major League 3,” he said. Other than Sheen, this new film will see the return of Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen and Dennis Haysbert, but no word on when things will start moving.

The first film had Mike Tyson, but somehow that fit in nicely with the events of that film. Personally, why have him ruin your sure-fire hit sequel, which opens May 26th?

Same with the original film’s writer/director, David S. Ward who has written a spec script for a real Major League 3.

The proposed film will reunite all of the first film’s cast, including Sheen, Tom Berenger, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes, who Ward claims he hasn’t talked too yet. But Ward confirmed to Moviehole that Sheen is “exited” for the film.

The “Wild Thing” could return, keep that in mind as this is tentative, but the Cleveland Indians could use him, as their fans only know. One would assume, if this happens, it would be in between seasons of Two and a Half Men for Sheen to be involved.

What do you all think?

It’s not uncommon to hear the finest actors and actresses in Hollywood referred to as “royalty.” These kings and queens (or princes and princesses, in their supporting roles) reign over the celebrity world, sitting atop their box office thrones, ruling their kingdom and amassing a fortune in ticket and merchandising sales. They walk the red carpet, adorned in their own version of crown jewels, acknowledging their public with a prim wave.

For a handful select members of this clan, the term actually fits. Some Hollywood “royalty” have been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II – Sir Sean Connery, Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Ian McKellan, to name a few. Two more names recently joined that list. You may now address them as Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Peter Jackson.

Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, as well as other roles, was knighted as part of a group honored by Queen Elizabeth II. The ceremonies also included a knighthood for theater and film director Nicholas Hytner.

In a separate ceremony in New Zealand, director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, The Lovely Bones) was honored with a knighthood in his native country. But don’t worry. The queen is their head of state, and the knighthood has her approval. He’s currently in New Zealand working on the two-movie prequel The Hobbit, also based on a book by J.R.R. Tolkien, with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro.

Charlie Sheen might be considered Hollywood royalty – he and his father, Martin Sheen, and brother, Emilio Estevez, have all enjoyed success as actors – but he exhibited less than proper behavior over the holidays.

According to reports, Sheen was arrested on Christmas Day in Aspen, Col., where he was vacationing with his wife, Brooke. An arrest affidavit quoted Brooke as saying her husband pinned her on a bed and held a knife to her throat, threatening to kill her. Charlie told police the couple slapped each other and that he snapped two pairs of her eyeglasses in front of her, but he denied threatening her with a knife. He faces charges of felony menacing, domestic violence, second-degree assault and criminal mischief and is free on $8,500 bond. A hearing is scheduled for Feb. 8 in Aspen.

Social services conducted several interviews concerning the couples’ 10-month-old twins, Bob and Max, but have decided to let them remain with their mother in Aspen.

But apparently, love really does conquer all. Despite this incident, the two claim to still love each other and want to continue their marriage. Charlie Sheen’s attorney, Richard Cummins, confirmed his client wants to reconcile and filed a court motion last Wednesday asking a judge to dismiss a restraining order that prevents the couple from having contact.

I can hear the strains of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by your Man” in the background, but good for her for speaking up for what she wants.

Seems every few months there are talks of an upcoming Wall Street remake on the horizon. Luckily, for each sequel talk director Oliver Stone is always in talks to take on the directing reigns for the film, with Michael Douglas taking on his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko once again. Sadly, though it appears for some reason the powers that be are also considering taking on Transformers star Shia LaBeouf as the main lead in the film akin to Charlie Sheen in the original.

We shall see if the sequel is actually green lit and begins pre-production, though as Wall Street just like Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood has been notoriously in the back burner for quite some time.
