Nothing has been heard about the film since then, and fans were hoping to just forget about it. However, Shock Til You Drop has learned that Kimberly Peirce in close to signing a deal to direct the film. Sure, fans are likely to be upset with this news, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote the script, is said to be sticking closer to King’s book. No word on casting.

Sources are now telling Cinema Blend that Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is wanted by the studio for the role. There’s been no offer made to Steinfeld, but she can be considered a possibility. The script is still being written, and we won’t know what direction the studio wants to go with the film until then.

However, given the previous choices, Steinfeld would be great in the role. Let’s face it, would anyone really buy Megan Fox as a girl who gets picked on in High School as opposed to the person who is doing the bullying?

To me, both are all wrong. On their worse days, Fox and Lohan look hotter than most of our girlfriends on their best days, but they both don’t look homily enough, like Sissy Spacek in the 1976 Brian De Palma film. Carrie White needs to be non-descriptive, someone who isn’t blossoming like the other girls in terms of style and looks, and Fox is godd*amn smokin’ and Lohan (if she’s off of drugs and beer) looks damn fine too.

Thoughts?

Sources are telling Showbiz Spy that Megan Fox (Transformers, Jennifer’s Body) is putting her name in the hat to play the lead role. “Megan is a huge fan of the original and would love the chance to play the lead,” according to sources. Fox hasn’t had much success outside of starring in the first two Transformers films, and the only horror film she made was Jennifer’s Body, and that failed to bring much of an audience.

However, the actress is apparently trying to star in more serious roles, and could even be re-thinking her career. “Theater really appeals to her. She has nothing lined up yet but she’s open to offers. She hopes to mix theater work with some smaller indie movies and only do big movies if they are right for her,” according to sources. However, if she nails this role, then this could be a break for her. However, this should be taken with a grain of salt for right now.

Well, Stephen King – who’s always been vocal about the films based on his novels – spoke to EW about this Carrie remake.

“I’ve heard rumblings about a Carrie remake, as I have about The Stand and It. Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, not Casablanca, or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book. Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White… hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg.”

Well said.

Apparently the plan is to go all True Grit like the Coen Brothers did in their remake of the John Wayne classic, in where the went back to the original novel to do a strict translation.

Still, do you want to see a new Carrie?

Think back to your last Halloween: Didn’t someone come to the door wearing a hockey mask as Jason? This documentary illustrates how Jason has become a cultural icon, highlighting details of the 12 films in the Friday the 13th series, from the initial film in 1980 through last year’s remake. Like any series with that many films, there are great ones (pour moi, part 1, part 2, and the futuristic Jason X) and ones fans would rather forget (Jason Goes to Hell). But there’s no denying that Jason is big business: the films have taken in over $500,000 million at the box office; moreover, Jason can be found on collection of dolls, lunchboxes, a lame Nintendo game, and of course, hockey masks.

The documentary, narrated by goofball gumba Tom Savini (Grindhouse, Dawn of the Dead), chronicles each film briefly before tackling topics like Jason as a misunderstood anti-hero and the psychological underpinnings of Mrs. Voorhees. You may have forgotten that Jason makes only a brief appearance in the first movie in the final sequence (a surprise ending inspired by the recently-released Carrie) or that Jason sports a potato sack like Merrick’s Elephant Man in Part 2. Many actors from the films return to recount how the Friday the 13th saga has changed their lives: Adrienne King (better known as “Alice” from the first two films) still speaks with Cindy Brady-type lisp and, despite having a real stalker at one point in her life, remains grateful for the letters she continues to receive about how her character helped make women more confident; Kane Hodder, Jason from parts VII through X, brought a new intensity to the Jason character and continues to rage about being passed over for the Freddy vs. Jason; Amy Steel, “Ginny” from Part 2, recounts her ability to invoke the spirit of Mrs. Voorhees and thinks it would be fun to get all of the F13 heroines back for sequel. Sorry to burst your bubble, Amy, but horror fans are not smacking their lips for a review of middle-aged heroines. Neither F13th alums Kevin Bacon or Corey Feldman appear, though TV Psyche‘s James Roday does land a few tasty barbs.

The DVD:

Audio/Video: The picture is in anamorphic and for a documentary everything looks and sounds good.

Extras: The four-hour extra bonus discs is a treasure-trove for F13th aficionados. More interviews that you could shake a machete at, but I liked the sepia-enhanced Crystal Lake Survival Guide with Leave It to Beaver background music and Fan Videos of a depressed Jason are especially worthy of attention. The extras are on disc two. Fans should also check out Donny Broussard’s review here.

The Film: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The DVD: Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

After being disappointed with Zombie’s latest entry in the Halloween series, it was surprising to see Rob Zombie’s perverse animated feature, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto at my doorstep. Considering the fact that the film has taken over three years to come out, I had my doubts as to how this cartoon was going to win over audiences. However, considering the impressive cast of Zombie regulars ( Sheri Moon Zombie, Geoffrey Lewis, Bill Moseley, Ken Foree) and A-list newbies, (Paul Giamatti and Rosario Dawson) it was a temptation this reviewer had to sink her teeth into. So was this forbidden fruit worth all the hype? Read on to find out!

Synopsis:

El Superbeasto (voiced by comedian Tom Papa) is a washed up has been luchador who is now making his own porn and filming infomercials in his spare time. When the fiendish “supervillain” Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatti) kidnaps potty mouthed and hygenically- deficient stripper Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson) to be his unholy wife, El Superbeasto enlists the help of his sexy sister Suzi X (Sheri Moon Zombie) to rescue his latest sexual conquest before the powers of Hell are unleashed. Animated boobies, Nazi Zombie attacks and hilarity ensues.

The Film:

Move over Trey Parker and Matt Stone! There is a new king of animated vulgarity. At the very beginning of the film in a black and white segment, the host gives a “friendly warning” to the audience that the rest of the film is not for everyone and some may find it “shocking.” The host’s words prove to be a huge understatement, as the next 77 minutes descend into an entertainingly crass and offensive animated feature that explodes into a monstrous riot full of violence, nudity, dirty sexcapades and some bad ass and extremely funny theme songs that surprisingly enough make fun of the events occurring on screen. (All performed by the talented group Hard ‘n Phirm)

Like Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse, Zombie injects references and even characters from his previous onscreen efforts which include “The Devil’s Rejects” crew, The Morris Green show, SS werewolf nazis and even Michael Myers makes an appearance in the film. (And he talks!) Although the film (co-written by Zombie and Tom Papa) probably provides the most random, bizarre and marijuana-induced scenarios and dialogue ever shown and heard in a full-length feature, (let alone an animated one) there is plenty of thought and ingenuity clearly evident in its execution.

The pop culture references also run rampant in this trashy cartoon as filmgoers will be laughing out loud when seeing references to Return to Jafar, Rainbow Brite, The Home Shopping Channel, Faster Pussycat! Kill Kill! and Carrie. However, don’t let the PG references fool you. The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is an “adults only” cartoon. Keep children far away from this one, or you will find yourself explaining what hentai porn is and what all the different sayings for a vagina if you do.

Furthermore, the voice talent in this film is phenomenal! All of Zombie’s regulars do a superb job with their characters. (My favorites include Geoffrey Lewis as the elevator bellhop and Brian Posehn as Murray the horny robot) Despite the fact that Sheri Moon Zombie does re-visit her “Baby” voice from House of 1000 Corpses, it is surprisingly enough far more tolerable to hear in an animated feature. Although, the most outrageous performance comes from Rosario Dawson as Velvet Von Black. Annoying as she came off at times, her character definitely had the best lines in the film. (I’m still chuckling over the “g-string wedgie” part.)

On the downside, the film doesn’t really resolve anything at the end. But considering this film has a threesome involving Medusa, a werewolf and a luchador, it was to be expected that this movie was going to be throw “linear logic” out the window.

The DVD:

Sadly filmgoers, the DVD features are very lacking with this one. All one can expect from this DVD are deleted and alternate scenes that aren’t very memorable. Also, the film comes with trailers for Anchor Bay releases Grace, Not Forgotten and Dead Space: Downfall. I suspect a special edition of this film will be released right around Christmas time. (I learned my lesson after buying 2005’s bare bones copy of Sin City.)

FINAL VERDICT:

Picture Who Framed Roger Rabbit’s Toontown with Tourette’s syndrome and crack and you have got yourself into The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. It is a wildly entertaining and incredibly filthy film that outbeats Heavy Metal as the best adult cartoon feature. El Superbeasto is a dish best served with a hash oil bong hit, good friends and repeat viewings. Guaranteed word of mouth will make this a trashy cult classic!

The Flick: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The DVD: Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Ok, so, I was in Texas a few weeks ago. Due to the lack of internet, (and the difficulty to traditionally post on an iPhone,) the Cinemash updates were overlooked. So, over the course of the past three weeks, I’ve missed two of Mean Magazine’s Cinemashes.

The first is rapper Common and Christopher Mintz-Plasse taking on Training Day. Mintz-Plasse is better known as McLovin from Superbad. Sad, I know, but that’s the only thing I know him from. It’s pretty decent. It’s not awesome, it’s not horrid. Just decent.

The second is Will Arnett and … Xavier… the renegade angel… as classic crazy Carrie. Regardless of how well Arnett performed, [adult swim]‘s Xavier just ruins it for me. I find that Xavier’s fifteen-minute show makes me want to throttle my television and burn the remnants.

The fuel that Cinemash had is all but gone. The Carrie mashup doesn’t mention the next episode, and it is Tuesday, so one can only assume that there may not be another one.
