For those of you who absolutely adore the Audrey Hepburn 1964 musical My Fair Lady will not like this bit of news. Variety reports that Shakespeare in Love and Proof director John Madden is signing on to helm the Columbia Pictures remake. You can now contemplate whether or not this is something to dread with not just the mere fact that it will be remade but that Keira Knightley has been circling the project like a vulture for awhile to grab the lead role. Then again, the remake could take a step away from the Hepburn feature since it will try to follow the play and novel other than just polishing up the movie.

The film will be produced by Cameron Mackintosh and Duncan Kenworthy with no word on who will be writing up the script.

Last summer, The Telegraph reported that Columbia Pictures and CBS Films entered into an agreement to remake the 1964 Lerner and Lowe musical My Fair Lady. The lovely miss Keira Knightley was also attached to be the successor of Audrey Hepburn’s role, the Cockney-but-loveable Eliza Doolittle. This was confirmed earlier this week.

Knightley has been taking singing lessons ever since the possibility came up, and pre-production started work on getting the permits to shoot on location at the original locations at Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street, and Ascot racecourse.

The movie is being produced by Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh, while Joe Wright is set to direct, and Emma Thompson is writing the script.

It sounds like this is going to be almost a shot-for-shot style remake, which I’m ok with.
