Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance rides into theaters on February 17th, 2012.

As Johnny Blaze hides out in Eastern Europe, he is called upon to stop the devil, who is trying to take human form.

He said this on their approach to this film: “We basically said, we want to do it, [would] absolutely love to do it, but it’s gotta be 100% different from the first movie, everything, except for Nic. We want the character to look different, feel different, sound different. The backstory of the character’s different, the origin of the story is expanded upon in ways that the first movie didn’t hint at, at all. The location’s different, the whole cast is different; the only thing that’s the same is Nic…It’s pretty much a reboot, only with the same actor, which makes it: a requel. Or a seboot, I can’t decide which one I like better.”

On the podcast he mentioned what the attraction to the project was: “The first attraction was Nic and the second was the character and just how cool it could be. [I wanted to] kinda make the Ghost Rider movie that I wished I had seen before.”

The film is looking at a February 2012 release.

Cage also mentions the “wild” ways Taylor and Neveldine have been shooting the film. “The director’s on rollerblades and hanging from wires with the camera, holding on to the motorcycle,” he said. Those who have seen Crank and Crank 2 know the directors filming style, and we can likely expect nothing short from this film.

Taylor revealed that Cage will have a two roles in the film, but it will not be Zarathos, the film’s villain. Cage will instead be playing both Johnny Blaze AND Ghost Rider. This means that Cage will be performing the stunts as Ghost Rider with the stunt and special effects team. It does sound disappointing to hear he won’t play the villain as well, but it help explain Taylor’s tweet that it will be“a Nic Cage classic.” 

Elba’s character will be “an alcoholic warrior monk tasked with finding Ghost Rider.” Elba was reported to the other day to have a contract for multiple Marvel films (here). However, this won’t be what he was talking about as Columbia Pictures owns the rights to Ghost Rider, not Marvel Studios.

Whitworth will play a criminal who is recruited by the Devil (Ciaran Hinds) to find  his mortal son, so he can join bodies on his son’s birthday. Whitworth’s character will then be turned into a demon. The film will see Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage) as he is hired to stop the Devil from accomplishing his goal.

According to Hot News, production will be heading to Romania and will be shot in 3-D this fall. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the sequel of Ghost Rider (2007), the action movie inspired from the Marvel comics will be shot starting this Fall in Romania,” Bogdan Moncea, Marketing Manager at Castel Film said. This will be the second big-budget film shot in Romania, but will be the first 3-D film shot in the location.

Details on the plot are unknown as of right now, Cage has said in previous interviews that “you don’t have to have seen the first film” to understand the sequel. Ghost Rider 2 will be picking up a few years after the first film, but it won’t contradict anything that happened in the original. This film will also be set a different tone than the first. While Cage is set to reprise his role, Eva Mendes has been confirmed to not return.

Cage is “very excited” about working with Crank directors, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. The actor states that he thinks the two “originals, and they know how to make a movie look great, and they know how to use a camera.” The duo apparently have “a very fresh take on the character.” The sequel is set to deviate from the original film, and will be “a different trajectory.” Filming is expected to begin in November.

Nicholas Cage will next be seen in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice opening on July 14, 2010.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

At this point your excitement for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance either skyrocketed or just completely went down the toilet. Regardless, it looks like Columbia Pictures wants this Marvel property to jump into principal photography this fall. No word on what exactly the story will be about, but David Goyer did pen the script if that makes you feel any better about this production.

Ghost Rider centered on theis stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze (Cage), who, in order to save the life of his mentor, agreed to give his soul to Satan. Instead, his soul bonded with the entity called Zarathos. When utilizing Zarathos’ powers Blaze’s flesh is consumed by hellfire, causing his head to become a flaming skull. He rides a fiery motorcycle and wields trademark blasts of hellfire from his skeletal hands. The 2007 movie starred Cage and Eva Mendes, directed by Mark Steven Johnson and ended up accumulating a hefty $228 Million overall.

At least we’ll get Nicolas Cage in all of his wig-wearing like glory. The roles the actor has been choosing as of late have been a lot more entertaining/intriguing, mainly noting Kick-Ass and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. The question is whether or not this combination will prove to be good once the final cut is made.

Cage will be sharing the screen with Jay Baruchel in the latest Walt Disney Pictures film The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, poised to appear in theaters everywhere on July 14th.

The Film Stage got to talk to the masterminds behind the two action packed feature and coughed it out of them the possibility of there being a Crank 3. Here’s more on what Brian Taylor, one of the directors, spewed out to them.:

It could, they’ve approached us for it and we wanna make another movie or two before that. We just don’t wanna run right into that. We’ve already got a story for Crank 3.

(laughs) No I can’t say what it is, but at some point when the money is there, when everyone wants to do it, and when Jason [Statham] has got a whole in his schedule. We definitely don’t want to do it next, we want to make another movie or two first. I think they’ll be a Crank 3 someday and I think it’ll be 3D.

There’s a good chance you’ll see it, but probably not for a year or so.
