This second trailer is very American

Well, that’s only if you include George Clooney to be a totally patriotic gun-welding American in Anton Corbijn’s new film The American. Not only do we get a very quick second trailer of the thriller (via Latino Review), but we get an awesome new poster to check out too.

Alone among assassins, Jack (Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry (Bruce Altman) that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

Anton Corbijn returns back behind the camera once more in the George Clooney starring film The American. The Focus Features thriller also includes the talents of Bruce Altman, Thelka Reuten, Violante Placido and Paolo Bonacelli. In Anton Corbijn’s latest blog entry for the ongoing production of The American, the popular music video director gives us a brief update on how filming is going so far. Along with that, we get a couple of brand new set pictures, along with one of a very bundled up George Clooney. To give you a better viewpoint of what exactly this thriller is about, keep on reading.

Hawaii is apparently a popular place to film a movie at the moment. Not only is it the main filming location for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but it’s also the location for the upcoming Alexander Payne feature called The Descendants. The film stars George Clooney as a “besieged and wryly introspective attorney” who “wrestles with the decision of whether to keep his swath of valuable inherited land or sell it to a real estate developer.” But more important is Matt’s (Clooney) wife, who is in an irreversible coma, and the fact that Matt has just discovered that she was having an affair with real-estate broker Brian, which leads “him to travel with his two daughters—precocious 10-year-old Scottie and fresh from rehab 17-year-old Alex—from Oahu to Kauai to confront Brian (/Film).

George Clooney can still be seen in the recently released Jason Reitman film Up in the Air and just wrapped up production for the Anton Corbijn directed feature The American. Payne is also attached to produce and direct the upcoming novel adaptation of Fork in the Road.

It’s the fall season, and as expected just like it’s been for the past few years, we get an overload of George Clooney. Well, instead of sitting you through a two or so hour long film, we bring you the first image (from Film School Rejects) of him starring in Anton Corbijn’s The American. The novel this film is based off of is written by Martin Booth and stars Clooney as an assassin who hides out in Italy in order to finish one last assignment. While in hiding, he gets a bit too comfortable and could be putting himself in harm’s way. The thriller comes out sometime in 2010.
