There are few examples where openly gay people have continued to enjoy successful entertainment careers – Elton John and Ellen DeGeneres come to mind – but many still fear and are subjected to a backlash. If you read Ted Casablanca’s The Awful Truth, you know Toothy Tile (one of Casablanca’s Blind Vices) and his reasons for remaining in the closet – at least professionally.

Ricky Martin took that leap of faith when he announced recently that he is gay via his Web site. The Puerto-Rican pop star, who is working on his memoirs, says is it was his twin sons who inspired him to be true to who his is, and the writing of his memoirs gave him a platform to express than personal freedom.

“I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am,” he wrote on his Web site.

Let’s face it – few of us were actually shocked by this. As one of my friends (who is, by the way, gay) said, “And in other news, water is wet, and the earth is round.” But it does prove a point. Martin says a main reason he stayed in the closet was because he was told it would hurt his career to come out as gay.

“Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth,” he said in a statement. “Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.”

I say good for him. You shake your bon-bon proudly, Ricky Martin.

Not long after Martin’s announcement, True Blood star and Oscar winner Anna Paquin confessed that she is bisexual. Her admission came during a public service announcement for the True Colors Fund. The theme of the campaign, which features numerous other celebrities, is “Give a Damn.” In it, she says, “I’m Anna Paquin. I’m bisexual, and I gave a damn because one hate crime is committed approximately every hour of every day in this country.” The True Colors Fund, started by Cyndi Lauper, is an organization dedicated to earning equal rights for people who are gay, straight, bisexual or transgendered.

While this announcement is surprising, given her engagement to True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, I think it’s also a good sign for things to come. Hopefully, celebrities will start to feel even more comfortable being who they truly are.

Timur Bekmambetov and Tom Jacobson are both producing the picture with Summit Entertainment and New Regency Enterprises attached for distribution. Thirlby can next be seen co-starring with Anna Paquin in the Kenneth Lonergan feature Margaret, expected to be released sometime this year.

Trick ‘R Treat: skyrocketing to the #1 spot is Michael Dougherty’s directorial debut, a film that might not ever be knocked off its perch at the top. Never has a movie captured the unholy spirit of All Hallow’s Eve so brilliantly. This anthology has its vignettes weaved together in Pulp Fiction fashion. Werewolves, zombies, a badass imp, and a gothic atmosphere that adds up to an enchanting experience.

Halloween: John Carpenter’s seminal slasher still feels fresh after all these years. The Gone With The Wind of the genre still packs a wallop with an incredible score, beautiful cinematography, and a boogeyman who scares just as well in the day as the night.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch: Hated by critics and fans upon its release in 1982. I never understood this – it’s hands down the best sequel of the series, dropping Myers completely, and adding Silver Shamrocks, bugs, snakes, killer robots, and pimp daddy Tom Atkins!

Night of the Demons: man, Kevin S. Tenney sure hit this sucker out of the park. One of the best opening credits in movie history, Steve Johnson’s impeccable make-up work, a hot Asian chick, Linnea Quigley’s butt in the air, and the infamous lipstick scene. Trash classic!

Trick or Treat: Being a 80′s child, I went to school with people like Eddie Weinbauer – guys who were Metal Heads, who were told that they would burn in hell for listening to Iron Maiden and AC/DC. It’s great to see this picked on teen exact revenge with the help of a befallen rock idol.

Honorable mention:

Prolific director Bryan Singer takes a turn towards horror as the producer of this Halloween shocker directed by X2 and Superman Returns screenwriter Mike Dougherty. With four interwoven tales concerning a high-school principal who moonlights as a vicious serial killer, a college-age virgin who’s saving… herself for that special someone, a woman whose hatred of Halloween is only exceeded by her husband’s love of the mischievous holiday, and a callous group of teens who carry out an unforgivably cruel prank, this fall frightener mixes Tarantino-style storytelling with the kind of chills that can only occur on the darkest day of the year. Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, Dylan Baker, and Leslie Bibb all star in a Halloween treat that’s sure to deliver a few nasty tricks.

It is my opinion that reality TV was created to be fun, frivolous entertainment – something to fill the void while the regular serials are on hiatus. But in reality (yes, pun intended), these shows aren’t trivial at all. In fact, what we learn from them can be quite serious. They can provide insight into human interactions (Big Brother). They can provide financial comfort to those who might need it (Survivor). They can lead people to their true loves (The Bachelorette). They can even improve your health (The Biggest Loser).

The seriousness of reality TV certainly was felt this week. The body of former model Jasmine Fiore was discovered stuffed into a suitcase and left in a dumpster in Buena Park, Calif., last week. Her husband, Ryan Jenkins, who was a contestant on VH1’s Megan Wants a Millionaire, was considered a suspect in the murder. He was found dead of an apparent suicide earlier this week at a motel in Hope, British Columbia, Canada.

But that wasn’t his first brush with the law. Jenkins, who also participated in VH1’s I Love Money 3, was charged in June in Clark County, Nev., with a misdemeanor count of “battery constituting domestic violence” for allegedly hitting Fiore in the arm and was set to be tried in December.

In his hometown of Calgary, Jenkins was sentenced to 15 months probation in January 2007 on an unspecified assault charge. The AP reports that Alain Hepner, Jenkins’ attorney in that matter, said as part of the judgment the judge also ordered counseling for anger management, domestic violence and sexual addiction. Hepner said there was also a civil restraining order.

The couple reportedly had a “big blowout” in May but since had reconciled. Fiore was 28; Jenkins was 32. VH1 has canceled Megan Wants a Millionaire and I Love Money 3.

True Blood stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer may have found real-life love on the set of fictional Bon Temps, but marriage is indeed coming before the baby carriage for this engaged couple. Rumors that they were expecting spread earlier this week, but her representatives denied reports that Paquin is pregnant.

Actress Heather Locklear hasn’t appeared on reality TV, but she is reportedly in talks to reprise her role as Amanda Woodward on the CW’s reincarnation of Melrose Place. First Kelly Taylor and now Amanda Woodward? If we can get Nelson back to the top of the charts, it’ll be like the early 1990s (and my junior high school days) all over again!

And while I might still occasionally gossip like I did in junior high, this journalist certainly doesn’t want your soul …

Finally at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, the proverbial blue balls of many horror geeks were finally relieved as the time had arrived to unlock this reborn virgin’s chastity belt.  The results of the drawn out wait also did not prove to be neither premature nor disappointing. Like David Silver or Nick Lachey would say, ‘it was well worth the wait.’

Michael Dougherty has definitely outdone himself as he has skillfully crafted the Pulp Fiction of horror anthologies.  Instead of taking the four separate stories and splicing them together with only a ghastly narrator`s introduction as the sole connection to the stories, Trick ‘R Treat is a broken-narrative tale following five different stories that all take place on Halloween night.

From the film`s prompt yet brutal opening sequence with an unknown being viciously killing a Halloween-hating wife, it immediately launches into a fast-paced story dealing with the grisly consequences and comeuppances that occur on this particular Halloween night.  Viewers are introduced to a murderous high school principal (played by Dylan Baker) who is late for a date, the principal`s miserable neighbour, Mr. Kregg (played by the great Brian Cox) who has a secret past, a group of kids all planning an elaborate prank on a socially inept girl, and a group of sexy dressed girls trying to get their virgin friend (played by Anna Paquin) laid by night`s end at a party in the woods.  All of these stories seem completely different from one another, yet just like an episode of Lost, Dougherty uses the same technique to interweave each character and story into each others, proving that this Halloween tale has planned far more surprises for the audience than initially expected.

Trick R Treat is by far the most viscerally effective horror anthology one has seen since Creepshow. Dougherty achieves this by successfully capturing the spirit of Halloween by setting an unsettling mood and tense atmosphere that perfectly aligns with the craftily scored pieces and the beautifully (yet eerily) shot cinematography used and shown throughout the film.  Although one should not give the writer and director all the credit, as a horror film of this calibre could not be as fun and frightening without its strong cast. Every actor (especially Baker and Cox) nailed it out of the park with their performances and Canuck viewers out there will also get a kick out of all the Canadian talent featured in this film, (*the movie was shot in Vancouver) including Dead Like Me’s Britt McKillip and Christine Willes.

Spoiling any of the special and gore effects would be an extreme disservice for future viewers, but let’s just say they far exceeded this reviewer’s expectations.  The effects even resurrected a movie monster’s image last seen shamelessly giving the middle finger onscreen. Finally, a horror film without the blatant CGI effects for a change!

Trick ‘R Treat is a film horror fans have been infatuated with for over two years now, and they will fall in love with it after watching it. (Personally, I fell in love with it after hearing Tony! Toni! Toné!’s “It Feels Good” song booming in the background. ) It is one of the most entertaining and clever horror films that does not deserve to be labelled as “straight to DVD” fare. In fact, the only reason I could think of as to  why the film has been pushed back for so long is the same reason why fans have yet to see a remake for Battle Royale and Who Can Kill A Child?–too much child killing!  Personally, I am glad to see Trick ‘R Treat not being exploited like Scream was. There will thankfully be no CW infused knock offs and hopefully it will turn into a cult film younger horror fans can discover and discuss about for years to come.

Some of this year’s biggest  snubs  are those of Jeremey Piven as the amazing Ari Gold, Katherine Hiegl in Greys Anatomy, no January Jones for her portrayal as Don Drapers wife Betty in Mad Men, as well as my personal injustice with the failed nominations for True Blood and its main actress Anna Paquin.

Though much can be said on the out-of-left-field nominations for the spectacular HBO series Flight of the Choncords and the sublime Big Love as well as the CBS comedy How I Met You Mother, and the first nomination for an animated series as best comedy since The Flintstones with Family Guy.

Sadly though in its final season Battlestar Galactica was once again snubbed in the lead acting categories as well as best drama series though we all can feel a bit of glee as Joss Whedon’s Dr Horrible’s Sing a Long Blog did get its nomination.
