Nostalgia is a powerful thing. It can take something mediocre and turn it into something sensational. However, every once in a while nostalgia can take an already sensational movie and elevate it even higher, and that is positively the case with The Muppets.

Gary (Jason Segel) and Walter (Peter Linz) are brothers, only Walter is a little out of place most of the time. You see, he’s a muppet, but he doesn’t realize it. Walter is also The Muppets’ biggest fan. He can’t stop thinking about them. Day and night it’s all that’s on his mind. So, when his brother invites him to tag along with him and his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) on a trip to Los Angeles, Walter gets excited because it’s a chance to visit Muppet Studios. During the trip to the City of Angels, Walter over hears the villainous Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) unveil a plot to destroy Muppet Studios, so he sets fourth on a quest to get The Muppets back together and save the studio.

Jason Segel did a phenomenal job, not only as an actor in the flick, but as co-writer as well. He wrote the script with Forgetting Sara Marshall director, Nicholas Stoller. The two of them were able to take Jim Henson’s characters and revitalize them in such a way that the reunion never once feels forced, and director James Bobin (The Flight of the Conchord) drives the entire film home by balancing fourth wall-breaking characters and situational anarchy.

What really makes The Muppets work is the deep understanding of the franchise history. Segel and Stoller really dive into these characters, and they never downplay their importance. Even the lesser characters get their time to shine. Also, the new muppets are pretty solid additions to an already overflowing pool of strong characters. It is a pleasure to see Kermit, Piggy. and the gang reunite Blues Brothers style, and the music is spectacular. Underneath the many celebrity cameos and amazing puppetry is a story that revitalizes a classic. The Muppets is an unbelievable comeback for the most beloved band of misfits to ever grace the silver screen, and it is absolutely a killer film.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The site has learned that Amy Adams is in running for the lead as Laura, a woman who takes over the orphanage where she was raised to open a home for disabled children. Then her young son begins to play with the same imaginary friend who terrorized her when she was a child. She’s in talks, and has yet to decide, probably since she’s busy reporting on Superman in Man of Steel, but she’s who New Line wants.

Thoughts?

A “secret source” with Warner Bros. is saying that Adams will actually be portraying Lana Lang instead. For those unfamiliar with the comics, Lang was Clark’s love while attending High School in Smallville. Instead, their source is saying that Michelle Monaghan (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Source Code) has been cast as Lois Lane, but hasn’t been allowed to tell anyone yet.

However, this should be taken strictly as a rumor for right now.

“There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder said. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

“It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].”

Say whatever you will about the past Zack Snyder films, this is shaping up to have a great cast. We will find out in 2012.

This is being done because the studio has had more success opening their films over the Thanksgiving than any other holiday. “Disney has had incredible success opening films over the Thanksgiving weekend, and thanks to ‘Tangled,’ we have the top three Thanksgiving openers of all time,” Chuck Viane, president of global distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures said.

Fans aren’t the only happy about the news, The Muppets themselves have “all agreed this comedy is a great fit for the holiday 2011 time frame,” Viane said. The film has an all-star cast of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lady Gaga, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis, Ricky Gervais and Emily Blunt. Jason Segelk and Nicholas Stoller wrote the script, and is being directed by James Bobin.

That’s what Walt Disney Pictures is planning on doing as they start up early development for a sequel to the popular 2007 film Enchanted. Hoping to bring back several of the stars from the cast, which include Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden, Disney is licking their lips with anticipation as they grab Fred Claus and I Am Sam scribe Jessie Nelson to pen the script. Attached to direct is 27 Dresses and The Proposal director Anne Fletcher.

Disney wants to get the picture together for an early 2011 release already, says Variety. Now fixed onto the feature as producers is Barry Sonnenfeld and Barry Josephson who both worked in this particular role in the first film. Walt Disney Pictures has several films revving up for a release, the closest of those being Tim Burton’s creatively visual spin on the classic Lewis Carroll tale Alice in Wonderland.

Amy Adams gallops as Anna, the control-freak house designer that desperately longs to get engaged. When Jeremy (Adam Scott) leaves for Dublin to go to a conference, he leaves Anna wanting to seal the deal with him. She ends up flying across the Atlantic to propose to him on Leap Day, but instead runs into disastrous adventures as she teams up with the rude Declan (Matthew Goode), uncovering that spontaneity sometimes leads to good things. Leap Year meshes together every other stereotypical romantic comedy formula together to provide a train wreck of a movie recently catapulted into theaters.

The best thing about the film is it’s backdrop, set through the lush lands spread across Ireland. The direction of Shopgirl helmer Anand Tucker is pressed upon one-too-many close ups that almost completely cloaks this film into a better lit episode of a daytime soap opera. The same can go with the performances of the entire cast, so one dimensional that your surprised that even a couple of these characters could exist in real life or more so stand each other.

Adams is normally a delight on screen, but seems to be doing nothing more than collecting a paycheck as she tries to high heel walk her way through the bland role. Once she’s thrust into forming a certain kind of chemistry with co-star Matthew Goode as the possible love interest, the only kind they’re able to make is mud. In typical stereotypical romantic comedy fashion, the real love interest is shoved to the side to make way for the supposed ‘dream guy’ but once the movie’s over with the only kind of men you see that Anna attracts are the jackasses of the world.

Leap Year falls into the category of sloppy and badly put together romantic comedies that should never see the light of day in a theatrical release. Do yourself a favor and instead of watching this film go and watch a recent romantic comedy like 27 Dresses, at least that one is easier to swallow.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

Even though we all are still trying to recover and shed the pounds of the holiday season, it’ll easily be gained back movie-wise with the onslaught of romantic comedies that always seem to come our way during this time of year. The latest film that starts up the trend of this particular genre is Universal Pictures’ Leap Year.

A woman (Adams) who has an elaborate scheme to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day, an Irish tradition which occurs every time the date February 29 rolls around, faces a major setback when bad weather threatens to derail her planned trip to Dublin. With the help of an innkeeper, however, her cross-country odyssey just might result in her getting engaged.

With the January 8th release date just days away, what better way to refresh your memory of the existence of this film than with several new pictures from the film? Check out the pictures from Rope of Silicon and stare at the handsome Matthew Goode (like I am) or the lovely Amy Adams.:

John Hillcoat’s current directorial project The Promised Land had a couple of good things going for it. The first was Hillcoat himself, who’s 2009 film The Road has been garnering quite some attention which made his newest project seem all the more appealing. Then we go onto the cast which included the talents of Ryan Gosling, Shia LaBeouf, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Scarlett Johansson and Paul Dano. This could end up being a good film if done properly, a great novel adaptation of sorts, but instead it’s the complete opposite.

In Hillcoat’s last production diary for The Road he reveals the fate of The Promised Land. Read the snippet below from The Playlist.:

“The joke on set and in the edit suite was that we had to get ["The Road"] out before it became a reality. Ironically, the movie industry itself now faces its own apocalypse. The perfect storm has arrived in Hollywood: a global economic downturn combined with piracy and the increase of downloading on the internet – what happened to the record companies years ago but with much higher stakes. The reactionary first phase has kicked in – few films in development, many films put on hold or shut down.

My own new project – with a much-loved script by Nick Cave and a dream all-star cast – has fallen apart. The finance company that we began The Road with has also fallen apart, having to radically downsize to one remaining staff member. The great divide has begun, with only very low-budget films being made or huge 3-D franchise films – the birth of brand films such as Barbie, Monopoly: The Movie – who knows what’s next, Coca-Cola: The Movie?

I end the year appropriately – gazing into the apocalypse of my own industry.”

Disappointed? Relieved? Do not care? Let us know what you think, we are curious.
