Catharine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood has scored itself a new still, which features star Amanda Seyfried. It is certainly an interesting picture, and the film has my attention. The film is set for release next year on March 11th.

Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie’s older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. As panic grips the town, Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast–one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect…and bait.

Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby back to the big screen. Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby Maguire looking to sign on as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. For the role of Daisy Buchanan, Luhrmann is calling for a wide search with numerous actresses. According to Deadline Hollywood, those names include Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy), Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet), Blake Lively (Green Lantern), Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch), Michelle Williams (Shutter Island), Rebbecca Hall (The Town) and Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2).

Luhrmann is also considering Natalie Portman, who seems to be one of the most wanted actresses after her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Luhrman is hoping to screen-test each actress with Leornardo DiCaprio over the next two weeks. Although, that may be difficult for some of the actresses who are shooting films overseas. No word on when filming is expected to begin, but you can expect to begin sometime next year.

In this day and age, do real life Dear John Letters still exist? With the advent of emails and text messaging, I suppose women who are tired of their absent boyfriends and/or husbands have a far more crueler tools to use. Coined during WWII, the soldiers quickly identified these letters of wives or girlfriends who are tired of waiting for them, as Dear John Letters, these letters sting. I can’t imagine those brave boys would think of worse things than being in a far-away land, only to get notified their seemingly love has found someone new, let alone fighting Hitler, but alas, technology has brought us the Dear John texts and its evil brother, the Dear John Facebook message.

Can you tell I’ve been stung by this all before? Toilets, sex solicitors, and break-up letters. I hate my name.

Regardless, the origins of the Dear John Letters would be appropriate for a film based on this idea, and with dripping sappiness, here’s Dear John, based on the bestselling tearjerker by Nicholas Sparks. Has anyone in the romantic genre carved out a niche as has Nicholas Sparks in this genre? His name has instant positive associative values, the box office loves him, and women swoon over his next novel. But novels are novels, and film is a different medium, as recent Nicholas Sparks books-turned-films have been rather ho-hum. Maybe something is lost in translation, but these films are feeling rather pedestrian and conventional.

Formula is good, but with a solid cast and director in Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat, Cider House Rules), there’s something a bit dispassionate in Dear John. Hallstrom delivers a warm film, filled with great cinematography and glow, but the real culprit of the film is the lead love affair between John (Channing Tatum) and Savannah (Amanda Seyfried). The acting and chemistry is fine, but the script doesn’t allow much more passed superficiality of their romance to really develop this inevitable Dear John Letter. John’s relationships with his father (Richard Jenkins, The Visitor) and Tim (Henry Thomas, E.T.) are far more real and warm, despite the brevity. I know that some elements have been changed from the book to this film, such things happen due to streamlining a coherent film, but I felt for John, as he had to deal with such a flip-flopping Savannah. Ugh, I hate girls like her. If she really did love him, and understand America’s climate for soldiers during 9/11, would she really just fling over for Tim?

Dear John isn’t bad, in fact, I found this adaptation emotional better than the Nicholas Sparks wanna-be, The Time Traveler’s Wife, but a good opportunity was missed. Savannah was just too cold and flaky for the audience to really get behind their long, sweeping love affair. I also felt as if the ending or denouement was a cop-out, hastily written, but looking around the theater, seeing not a dry eye amongst many, what do I know?

The DVD:

Audio/Video: As far as DVDs goes, Sony’s release here is pretty good. Colors are warm, with a lot of daylight scenes, that make everything seems colorful. Transfer is detailed and sharp, as a SD transfer can be. The DD 5.1 track is okay for a drama. Rear speakers get plenty of noises, but everything just feels “there”. Not in a bad way, but in a more flat way. Still, all in all, it’s really decent.

A Conversation with Channing, Amanda and Lasse: A short quick interview with the ones in the title that isn’t too bad, just short. Runs about 6 minutes.

Transforming Charleston: This fifteen minute piece is really good. It focuses on the production design side of things and offers up some neat behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the Production Designer Kara Lindstrom.

Military in Movies: Dear John’s Military Advisors: Capt. Gavin McCulley was the film’s military advisor and he offers up what he liked about the script and what he brought to the characters during the soldier sequences.

The Story of Braeden Reed: The disc’s best extra, focuses not on the film per se, but on the young boy who played Alan. This 25 minute piece talks about his life with autism and is really quite touching. A must see.

Outtakes, some ho-hum Deleted Scenes and a different Alternate Ending that ends a little better than the one used, plus Trailers rounds out the extras.

Conclusion: An okay romantic film, although nowhere near The Notebook’s level is on a great DVD release.

The Film: Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

The DVD: Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The Shakespearean tale of Romeo and Juliet is a love story that women everywhere have embraced throughout the ages. That constant longing for finding that one true love and going after it despite the odds, is something that is a prominent theme in Letters to Juliet. The journey up and down Italy that Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Dear John) leads us through, is predictable, yet charming enough to woo us over.

We’ve seen the story before, second chances at love in different shapes and forms that inspire us to get all warm-hearted. This romantic comedy follows the same formula with Sophie (Seyfried) who travels to Verona, Italy with her fiance (Gael García Bernal) who’s out of the picture a majority of the film due to a constant swing of ignoring his love. Bernal is, unfortunately, the most under-used; immediately shoved to the side as the would-be road block in order to make the budding romance between Sophie and Charlie (Christopher Egan) a lot easier to get to. Seyfried completely plays up the cute and determined young woman with a heart of gold to the core which works the most whenever she’s sharing screen time with Egan. His entertaining portrayal of the stubborn but soft-hearted Charlie passes, along with his striking features, enough to make the women in the audience sigh wishing they were Sophie.

In this case, the main love story between the two isn’t the most engaging but Claire’s (Vanessa Redgrave) quest for her long-lost love Lorenzo (Franco Nero, Django) gives you that flutter in your heart of hope. Redgrave shows off her solid skills in front of the camera and whisks away the audience anytime she appears.

Gary Winick handles the overly mushy chick flick material well enough to translate the heart melting script from the pages to the big screen. Tim Sullivan and Jose Rivera’s script is rather predictable to a fault all the way to a point where it’s easy to figure out all that would happen within the first fifteen minutes of the story. Then again when you have mainly fine performances and a gorgeous back drop of a foreign country completely enveloping you throughout the film, it’s forgivable. Letters to Juliet is the latest notch in a collection of romantic comedies or “chick flicks” that will easily sweep it’s demographic off it’s feet. If you want that warm and fuzzy feeling again from those true love tales you read and watch so much on, this is right up your alley.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
